Verlie's Diary

Peace Corps established. The Berlin Wall constructed, IBM introduced ball typewriter. First disposable diaper. Unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba.

January


1. 5:15 got up. Temp 28 and snowing some. Sis called and said that she fell over at Jessie’s last night in yard and sore all over. At 3:30 I went down to Ethel’s. Left at 5:30 and went down to Quinzetta’s. Got home at 8:30. Cloudy but not much snow. Temp stayed below 33 all day.


2. Up at 7:20. Temp 20. Frosty but clear. Quinzetta called. Mrs. Lilly called and Dr. Lilly got on the line & we chatted awhile. I watched the Parade of Roses in California starting at 11:30 till 12:40. Then watched the football games the rest of the afternoon. At 5:00 Ennis and Fern came for sisses glue to fix her tooth broken off her partial. At 5:45 Sis called again for me to come down and stay with her till Samps gets back from Dewey’s, his brother, at 9:30. High School basketball game alumni. I did not go. Temp 26 and still clear.


3. Up at 6:45. Temp 20 and snowing. Dressed at 9:00 and went down to office and got old ck book for Dr. Vermillion. Got Dr. Lilly’s mail and went down to Dr. Lilly’s a while & he & I went down to see Dr. Vermillion. Just pouring snow. Back and helped at the store at noon and home. Made off statements for Dr. Nuge. Called MaryLee about her house this morning. At 9:00 Jean Conner came and paid rent till Feb. 1st. Mrs. Foster called for a chat at 6:00. Still snowing at 6:15. Temp 24. Larry Jones came at 8:15 to pay up insurance of Arthur Jones. Snowing and wind high.


4. Up at 7:50. Temp 20. Cloudy and snowing some today. Ate & at 10:20 Pat Twohig came and left at 11:45- Business visit. At 8:30 MaryLee called and told me to call power co., gas co. and mayor to see if renter had changed meter. Made out statements for Dr. Nuge. At 3:30 AE Power man came to see me about MaryLee and Uncle Hade’s house and read meter. About 4:00 I went over to see Mrs. Casto a while. Mr. Casto came in from school and told me that he had bought a new car – a DeSota. Took me and Mrs. Casto to Lerona for a ride in his new car. Home at 5:40 and ate and made off more statements for Dr. Nuge. Clear. Temp 30 at 6:30. Mountain Motel opened. First over night was a New Yorker.


5. Up early. Temp 26 and clear. Ate, dressed and went down to Dr. Vermillion’s and gave him $11.00 paid to me by Larry Jones on Jan 3rd to me at my home. At 8:15 I went back to store and helped during noon hour and home. Mrs. Butcher called for me to come to a Stanley Party at 10:30 Tuesday morning and for me to bring Mrs. Casto with me. At 3:30 Gas man read gas meter at Uncle Hade’s house. Temp went up to near 40 today. I made off more statements for Dr. Vermillion. At 7:30 Ethel came and left at 9:00. Then I listened to WVU basketball game. WVa won.


6. Up at 8:15. Clear, temp 34. Ate, dressed and at 10:25 Mrs. Casto and I went down to Mrs. Butcher’s to a Stanley Party. About 17 present. Home at 11:50. Warming up a lot. Ate dinner and read paper and worked on statements. Ennis called at 1:30. Mrs. Casto called saying that they were going away for the week at 4:30. Put things away and almost forgot basketball game at Athens Hi. Played Northfork-Elkhorn. They beat us bad. I helped at store at ½ time.


7. Up at 8:15. Clear. Temp 40. Dressed and went downtown, made deposit at the bank and back to the store. At 1:00, I went up to see Mrs. Withers a while. We sat in the car and talked about 1 hour. On to Princeton for a while and home. At 4:15 watched football and baked cornbread for supper. At 5:45 Ethel called for me to go to Princeton with her. We shopped and got home about 8:00. She left at 10:00. I open the door for her to leave and there on my porch was my big jug taken away on Halloween night.


8. Sunday Temp 26. Snow flurries. Ethel ate dinner with me. Snowing hard at 5:30. Temp 24. 


9. Up at 8:15. Temp 16 and snowing just a little. At 9:30, Mrs. Calfee called for me to come over and help her with Mr. Calfee. We bathed and dressed him. I came to store & helped at noon. Home at 1:00. Cleared up with sun out but still cold. I made off statements for Dr. Nuge. Dr. Lilly called me last saying that Dr. V had a bad night Saturday night. At 4:00 I went down to Dr. Vermillion’s. He seemed pretty good. 4 have paid up their accounts while I was there. Home at 5:20 ate supper and watched news. At 8:00 I went over to Mrs. Casto’s till 9:30. Temp 18 at 10:15.


10. Up early. Temp 18. Clear. Ate and put out a washing. Dressed and went down and helped out at store during noon hour. Home at 1:15 and made off some more statements for Dr. Vermillion. At 4:00 I went down to Dr. Lilly’s a while and home at 5:30. Ate supper and at 6:30 went down to Hi gym to see basketball game – Athens beat Spanishburg. Helped at store at ½ time and after the game. Home at 9:45. A fine day. Warmer a lot. To bed at 12:15.


11. Up at 7:15. Ate and ironed up all of my clothes. Finished at 10:00. Dressed and went downtown to help at store during noon hour. Home at 1:15 and made off statements again today. Sun out and nice – no wind. Temp up to 49. At 6:15 I went up to Harry’s a while. Lizzie & Bill were there. Came home at 7:40. Made out more statements. Mrs. Rogers call and we had a nice visit over the phone.


12. Up at 8:00. Clear and temp 34. Has a bad night. Could not go to sleep until after 1:00 AM. Dressed and went down to see Dr. Vermillion. Back to store at 11:45 to help during the noon hour. Home and went to the bank first to have interest added for 1 year on savings account. Went over for rent on Uncle Hade’s house & checked inside. At 5:00 ate supper and at 5:30 went down to Dr. Lilly’s to get information on tax report. Got home at 9:00. Had a nice visit and lots of fun. Temp went up to 52 at 3PM. Clear and warm all day, no wind.


13. Up at 8:10. Clear. Temp 42. Ate and dressed. Wrote MaryLee and I went down to store to help out at noon hour. Home at 1:25. Shelled out my seed beans & picked up limbs out of yard. Swept porch & walk. Just messed around the rest of the day.


14. Up at 7:00. Temp 40. Dressed and went to Princeton to Harry Finkleman’s office. He filled out my income tax blanks. Shopped & home by 12:30. Made out check to Internal Revenue for $49.65 and went down and mailed it. On down to Sis’s and home at 3:00 and watched ballgame. At 5:00 Sis called for me to go out to eat hamburgers and French fries. We went to new drive in on Bluefield Road. Raining and we came back to Princeton and parked and watched traffic go by. Home at 7:50. Raining some when I went to bed at 11:15.


15. Sunday Up at 7:00. Cloudy. Temp 40. Raining. Ate, read paper & started dinner. Sis & Samps came at 12:40. Uncle Hade and MaryLee came and I nearly had dinner ready. We ate and just as we finished, Elva Pettrey came to rent Uncle’s house. Later they called back and said they would see us in the morning. Later they came and looked at the house and will pay 6 mos. In advance. Uncle and MaryLee left at 4:00 and Sis and Samps left at 5:00. I cleaned up kitchen and went over to Casto’s a while. Home at 8:45. Temp 38.


16. Up at 7:00. Ate. Temp 33. Raining some. Read paper. Elva Pettrey came and said that they would take Uncle’s house. Ethel and I went to Princeton to auction sale at Princeton Transfer Company of household furniture. At 1:20 we went up to courthouse to see lawyer about Frazier estate. Snowing a little. We went to Pearisburg to see Aunt Emma. East River Mountain covered with snow and at Pearisburg.  We left at5:30 and got home at 6:30. Ate supper and then Allen Wiley came in to see about building me a kitchen cabinet for over the sink. Ethel left at 8:00. Temperature 28 at 9:00. Town started checking speed through school zone with radar. Has fined several on the first day.


17. Up at 7:15. Temp 26. Ice covered roads - cars were just crawling along. Dressed and went down to Dr. Lilly’s and down to see Dr. Vermillion. Back to store and helped out at noon. Back home by 1:30. Sally Oxley & Debbie came and left at 3:10. Boys Phillips came in early this morning to pay his bill to Dr. Vermillion and had a receipt & I squared up his account. He paid me $1.00 on his Dad’s account in full. At 7:20 Ennis, Fern and Kay stopped for me to go to Princeton to basketball game. Athens Hi played Princeton. Score 65-48 in favor of Princeton. Home at 10:00. Clear & cool. Temp 28.


18. Up at 7:45. Mrs. Lilly got me out of bed asking me to come down at 1:00 to help Dr. Lilly get report to make out his tax report. I went to store at 11:45 and helped during noon hour. At 1:00 I went to Dr. Lilly’s and worked there until 4:00. I went down to Dr. Vermillion’s a few minutes to check on his dentures as Dr. Lilly was going down to relieve his sore spots. Home at 5:00. Ate supper and made off statements for him. Clear all day but cool. Called Sis and talked a while.


19. Temp 26. Mrs. Lilly got me out of bed. She called. Snowing pretty hard all morning. Dressed and worked some on Dr. Lilly’s report. At 11:30, I went down to store to help during noon hour. Just pouring snow all afternoon – 3 or 4 inches – roads are bad. QD about 1 jour late and Sis also late. At 9:30 I went over to Uncle Hade’s house and turned up gas. It’s getting colder fast – may go down to 15 tonight. Talked to Sis and Dr. Lilly & Mrs. Vermillion. Washed my hair at 7:00. Stopped snowing at 8:00.


20. Up at 7:30. Temp 10 above. Snowing just a little all morning. Sis did not go to school today. Why? Roads are bad. At 10:45 the big day in Washington – swearing in President of the United States. Started over at 1:15 6 inches of snow in Washington. Here in Athens it is snowing hard and sun is shining. At 1:30, finished up Dr. Vermillion’s statements. I watched parade in Washington till 5:00. Temp 20 there. Crowds freezing. Wind high. Athens- Welch basketball game cancelled due to bad roads. No one came.


21. Up at 7:45. Ate. Snowing Temp 10 above. Never got above 12 all day. Cleaned kitchen floor and steps. Defrosted refrigerator and stayed home all day. Took snow off of porch, steps and car. Started car and let it run a while. Checked Uncle Hade’s house. Temp at 6:00 is 5 above. Snowed all day and snowing at 11:00 when I went to bed.


22. Sunday 4 below this morning at 8:00. Clear and sun out. Temp at 1:30 12 above- that was as high as it got all day. No one came till 9:30. MaryLee and Elmer came as bad as the roads were. Left at 11:40. Temp 10 at 11:50.


23. Up at 7:00. Temp 18. Went up during night snowing hard. Jessie came at 8:00 for penicillin for Samps - sick - cold in head. Sis went out to school today. Jessie worked today. Just pouring the snow all morning. Put on snow pants and went out and swept snow off of car and it took off on first try. I went downtown to post office and got my check from Affiliated fund. $ 15.12. I talked to Dr. Lilly in bank for a while and went up to store and helped out during noon hour along with Ennis. Home at 1:00. At 3:30, Pat Twohig came to see me. I am cashing in my life insurance policy. Stopped snowing at 1:30. I cleared off kitchen sink & waxed top. Ate supper and called to see how Samps is feeling & Dr. Vermillion.


24. Up at 8:00. Temp 22. Paid paperboy this morning for Feb. $1.75. Sun out. Nice. Ate. Dressed and called Mrs. Lilly to see if Dr. Donzie wanted to go down to Dr. Vermillion’s with me. Mrs. Lilly said that he shoveled snow yesterday & had a lot of pain in his chest & arm. I went down to Dr. and he was about the same. Came back to store and helped at store. Mitzi and Mimi are sick and vomiting. Jessie was home with them. Samps at store. Home at 1:10 and watched TV. Used sweeper and cleaned some. Ate supper and called Sis & Garnet called. Mrs. Foster called and temp 5 above at 7:30. Going to be below zero so weatherman said. No wind much.


25. Temp -8 this morning at 4:50.  15 below at Dr. Vermillion’s and 20 below at James Oxley’s. No wind & clear. Sun out all day. Did not melt much. I dressed and went out & started my car. On the first try even if it is cold. I went over to Uncle Hade’s. Hot water spigot would not run. Cold one did. Went down to store to help at noon. Jessie sick and both kids. Home at 1:20 and watched TV a while & started cleaning my room. At 6:00 President Kennedy had his first news conference and first one ever to be carried on TV. At 8:30 MaryLee and Elmer came. We went over to her house. Hot & cold water frozen. They left at 11:10. Cold. Temp 7 above.


26. Up at 7:15. Temp 10. Cloudy & snowing. Ate dressed and went downtown at 11:00. Got letter from affiliated fund for 122 shares. Sent out check for it - $1,001.62. Back to store and helped out at noon and back home by 1:10. Checked Uncle’s house Hot and cold spigots at sink still froze. Pouring the snow. At 2:15, Jessie and Lodema came. I gave Jessie Dad’s old work Pants, suit and coat – brown one- and handkerchiefs. Gone at 3:05. Just pouring snow at 5:00. I called fern to see if we were playing Welch tonight in basketball. She said it was called off. Makes 2 times cancelled due to weather. Elva Pettrey called and said that they would not take the house – bought Dewey Turner’s. At 10:00, Channel 7 – debate listen. Went over at Casto’s at 7:00 and home at 9:40. Not snowing now – first time all day. Temp 20. Windy.


27. Lacy Alvis called me at 6:45 and got me out of bed.  He wanted Sis but could but get her so he called me. Temp 7 above. Ate. Dressed and went to office and got Dr. V 1959 income report and took down to him. Stopped at bank and had bonds cashed $1000.00 2-$50. $1413.96 deposited in bank on checking account. Interest $588.96. Helped at store in afternoon. Jessie’s job at liquor store is over tomorrow so I won’t be helping at the store any more. Home at 1:15. Baked a custard pie. Stewart Turner, deputy assessor, came and assessed me. Temp 9 at 6:00 snowed some early this morning. Checked Uncle’s house at 5:30. Cold water spigot ran but hot one still froze.


28. Up at 7:30. Temp 6 below. Clear and sun out. No wind. Dressed and went down for groceries and home at 12:00. Jessie’s last day at liquor store. 4 years democrats took over. Ran sweeper & checked Uncle’s house. Hot water thawed out. Samps will work 4 days a week at store from now on. Temp 7 at bedtime.


29. Sunday Up at 7:20. Temp 6 above. Ate Started dinner. Mrs. Lilly called and also Sis. Sun out bright.  At 1:45, Uncle Hade, MaryLee and Elmer came. We ate, washed dishes and talked a while. Went over to the house. Everything is okay. They left at 4:15. I finished cleaning up kitchen. Tired. A nice day. Ann Calfee called for me to come over in the morning to help her bathe and change bed of her father.


30. Up at 7:15. Forgot to look at Temperature. Clear & sun out. Ate & dressed and went over to Mrs. Calfee’s to help her bathe Mr. Calfee & change his bed. He is real sick I think. Back to store a minute, got mail & home. I got letter from life insurance. Heard President John Kennedy talk to the nation at 12:30. At 2:30 started my washing in between programs on TV.


31. Temp 20. Went up during the night. Clear and sun shining. Ate, dressed and went over to Calfee’s to help bathe and change bed. Gladys Wiley was there ironing for Mrs. Calfee. Back to PO and mailed out my life insurance policy to be cashed in. May invest in something else that will bring in cash. Helped at store at noon. Home at 1:15. Sprinkled clothes and watched TV till 4:00. Went over to see Virginia White a few minutes. She has been in bed for about 10 days. Ulcer- Dr. says. Joe and Midge came. I left & went over to see Dr. Vermillion a while and home at 5:30. Ate supper and ironed some. Listened to West Virginia basketball game. Played in Bluefield. West Virginia won. Watched Jack Paar special at 10:00 tonight. It was a good show. Temp hit 40 today. Melted snow a lot.


February


1. Temp 29. Clear, sun out. Mrs. Calfee called for me not to come today. Ate and finished ironing, dressed and went down to Dr. Lilly’s. He was uptown and Mrs. Lilly had company. I came back to store and helped at noon. Samps off from work today and again on Saturday from now on. Home and Allen Wiley cane and put up my kitchen cabinet over sink. Blaine Jennings coming tomorrow to varnish it. I went to High School gym to basketball game. Welch Hi 59 vs. Athens 61. A fine game. We almost lost. Cloudy at 10:30. May snow before morning. Burnt trash at 5:00. Was a nice day. Temp hit 40. Melting a lot.


2. Groundhog Day. Temp 24 & snowing. At 10:30 Blaine Jennings came and put a coat of shellac on my cabinets. Finished at 11:45. Ate dinner and at 1:15, Blaine came back and put a second coat on kitchen cabinet. Looks real good. They say that sun came out about 2:45 for about 2 minutes. I did not see the sun. After supper at 7:00 I went over to Casto’s home. At 9:00 we watched Hong Kong show for 1 hour. Very good. Home at 10:05 and to bed at 11:05.


3. Up at 7:30. Temp 10 and just pouring the snow. Ate & dressed & went downtown for mail & milk at Mrs. Jennings. Back to store and helped at noon. Jessie went and got a load of feed for his cattle and sheep. Home and watched TV & put dishes in new cabinet & cleaned other cabinet & dishes. Ate supper & went to store to get milk that I forgot at noon. Stopped snowing. I got my dividend check from AE Power Co. At 7:00 Mrs.  8:00. I went over to Mrs. Casto’s and we had a picture show & I got home at 10:00. Snowing just a little. Troy Conner came and paid his rent for February this afternoon.


4. Temp 20. Cloudy. Up at 7:30 and ate, dressed and called Dr. Lilly. We went down to see Dr. Vermillion and he seems to be feeling better. Jessie Wiley & Helen paid me for the insurance on farm house. Back to store. Lodema gave me 1 doz. eggs. Home and baked Jessie a custard pie. Listened to WVa and NC basketball game. Cloudy all day but no snow. Temp 22 at 3:15. Jessie’s came at 6:05 to get his custard pie. No one else came. To bed at 11:00.


5. Sunday   Up at 8:30. Temp 10. Snowed just a little – real fine snow – then cleared off. Temp rising and melting a lot today. Ate dinner and at 2:30 Ennis and Kay came for a while. Left at 3:00. No one came. Helen Caperton called me and we talked for 20 minutes. No one else came.


6. Up at 7:30. Cloudy some. Temp 25. I worked in basement. At 10:30, Dr. Lilly called and said that he had a cold and for me to bring him some brown tablets. I did and went back to store and helped at noon. Home and worked in basement again – just cleaning it up some. Mrs. Jessie Mullens left $2.00 with Lodema for Dr. Vermillion. I left receipt with Lodema for her. Melted a lot today. Temp 36 at one time. At 8:30, Mrs. Vermillion called for me to listen to WVa Tech & Concord. A basketball game over WLOH. Concord got beat. Tied at halftime 40-40.


7. Cloudy. Temp 28. Up at 7:00 and ate. Went to basement and cleaned till 10:00. Mrs. Lilly called for me to bring mail & come down. Dr. Donzie is feeling better but not getting out today. Took car to garage – no brakes left- it is to be fixed. Worked at store at noon. At 12:15 sleeting rain. Paid Uncle Hade’s water bill. Got letter from MaryLee yesterday with cash in it. Got car at 1:00 – good brakes - $9.71. Home. Sleeting hard. Cleaned in basement for a while. Sleet turning to snow and a heavy snow coming down from 3:30 on to this time 7:00. Ethel called me at 9:45- she has lost her marbles – I think she went out to a Farm Women’s meeting. Still snowing and sleeting.


8. Up at 7:00. Temp 25 & snowing. Ate. Dr. Lilly called and Sis called. She could not get out because of drifts. Schools open with about 6 in. of snow & sleet. Jessie came for me at 10:40. I went down and helped them at noon. Samps don’t work anymore on Wednesdays & Saturdays. At 12:50 Jessie brought me home and I watched President Kennedy’s press conference. A boy came to see about Uncle’s house. He wanted it furnished – a college student. So he moved on. At 2:30 I took snow off of steps & walk and went over to Uncle’s house and turned down gas. Everything is okay.  I went over to Casto’s at 7:10 and home at 8:30. Snowing real fine as I went over and none as I came back. Temp 28 at 10:00.


9. Up at 7:15. Temp 26. Cloudy & misting a little fine snow. I dressed and Jessie came for me at 10:45 to help at store. My check came for $620.37 – dividend on cashing in my life insurance policy. I will add enough cash for another block of Affiliated Fund Stock. Helped at store at noon and home by 12:45. I watched TV and washed my good sweater Sewer man came to see me from Princeton and said that a lady had called him to come and fix a cesspool and it was me. I did not call them. Snowing fine as meal most of afternoon.


10. Up at 7:30. Temp 25 and clear. Ate. Cleaned up, dressed and read paper. Jessie came at 11:15 and I went down and helped at the store at noon. Home and cleaned snow off of back porch and watched TV till 2:30. I went out and got car out of deep freeze. Took all of snow off of it. First time since Tuesday I had cranked it. Ate supper and went to gym to basketball game. Athens Hi beat Herndon Hi by 10 points. Best game so far I think. Home by 9:30. To bed at 11:#0. No one came.


11. Up at 7:30 & ate. Cloudy. Temp 27. Mrs. Vermillion called for me to bring croup med. From office. Buddy Bradley came up and gave me a check for $565.50 for Ins. Co. in full. Went down to Dr. Vermillion’s and ate dinner with them. Home by 2:30. Dr. feeling very good. Only weighs 136 he says. I went to Princeton at 3:45 and shopped around and home at 5:30. Fred Rogers called. We talked & Elva for 50 minutes. Cleo Noble called and we talked 1 hour and 40 minutes.


12. Sunday Up at 8:00. Temp 36. Melting fast. Sun out. Nice. Dressed, read paper and ate dinner at 1:00 PM. At 2:30 temp 49. Partly cloudy. Really melted snow today. Watched basketball game. No one came today. Sis called at 8:30. Cloudy.


13. Temp 34. Partly cloudy. Temp rising. Up at 7:15. Ate, dressed and at 10:30 went down to office and got a roll of adhesive tape and took down to Dr. Vermillion. Back to store and helped out at noon hour and home at 1:15. At 2:30 I went to basement and put dirt in containers that you plant in ground. Put tomatoes (yellow) seed in and pepper seed. Got them going. At 6:15 I went down to QD’s – all gone. Back and stopped at Alice Lee’s a few minutes. Home at 8:15. Delbert called me from Roy Beckett’s filling station. He and Mary Lee past by and saw a car in front and thought that I had company. So they came up at 8:30 and left at 11:15. I got to bed at 12:30.


14. Up at 8:15. Clear. Temp 40. Ate. Fred Ball came to see about his account with Dr. Vermillion and said that he was shocked at the amount $194.50. I took him down to the office and showed him the ledger. Got mail and helped at the store. J. Dyer Calfee died yesterday at 1:30. Saw it in the paper. Planted some more seeds today. Golden peppers and 2 cups of cucumbers. Dressed and at 4:30 went over to Calfee’s for a while. Back to see Aunt Emma a while and on to QD’s. He was in bed so didn’t get to see him. Home at 6:30. Temp went to 53 today. Ethel called at 9:30 saying she had won 5000 TV stamps. Man called her from Princeton.


15. Up at 8:10. Sun out but partly cloudy. Ate and burned trash out of basement and back porch. Dressed and went down to help out at store at noon and back home at 1:15. At 1:35 Glen White came to see me about his account with Dr. Nuge. We went down to Dr.’s and checked about account and he paid Dr. Nuge $10.oo. Raining. Came home at 3:00. Watched TV until 4:30. Ate supper. Ethel & Shelby Jean stopped by at 6:30. I painted Shelby’s throat. It was sore.


16. Up at 7. Clear. Sun out early. I took my 3 bu apples under porch and sorted out the good ones and carried away the rotten ones. Dressed and went down town and helped out at store during noon hour and home at 1:10. Jesse took Ennis and Kay to see Dr. Meador. Kay was the patient. Nothing wrong. I painted my leaf broom and a few other things in the basement. A fine day. Warm and sunny. At 6:30 I went to Hi gym to see the last basketball game of this season. Athens Hi beat Greenbrier Hi AA team.


17. Up at 7:15. Ate. Temp 36. Partly cloudy. Dressed and went down town at 11:30. Helped at store at noon. Home at 1:30. Heard that water would be off Saturday and Sunday- dirty water the reason. I got plenty of water before it was gone. At 4:30 raining and at 6:00 just a little. At 7:15 Sis and Samps came. At 9:00 Jesse came and all gone at 10:00. Raining. Samps brought me 2 gallons of water.


18. Up at 8:15. Cloudy. Water still gone. Fred Rogers called to see what was wrong as he had no water. Failed to tell him. Talked to Mrs. Lilly and later Dr. Lilly called and said that my furnace would be okay, Ate dinner and watched basketball game. I varnished my yard broom with a second coat and one coat on my lawn chair. Sis called at 5:00. I had a huckleberry pie in stove and I made 1 cup of jelly. At 5:50 I went down to Sissy’s and ate supper with them. Home at 8:30. I am sure Mary Lee had been here.


19. Sunday      Up at 7:30. Temp 52. Sun out. Dressed and got a large bucket and went over for rich dirt. Home at 11:00. Ate dinner and at 12:30 read paper & watched basketball game. At 3:45 Ethel called that she was sick. Cold. Temp 100. Sore throat. I got my medicine together and went down and painted her throat. I gave her 2 pen. Tablets. I ate supper with them. Home at 6:30. Real nice day. No rain but looked like it for a while. No one came.


20. Up at 7:00. Temp 32. Partly cloudy. Dressed ant 10:30 went down to Dr. Vermillion’s for medicine for Chancy Hall. Dr. seems better to me. Helped at store at noon. Home at 1:15. Watched programs on TV till 2:30. Went to basement & cleaned Grandma’s cane varnish off of it – looks much better. Ate at 5:00. All air planes in New York and Washington on strike. Oh boy, they are in a mess here and abroad. Raining today. My tomatoes are up and cucumbers are coming. Planted them last Tuesday.


21. Temp 33. Cloudy. Up at 8:00. Ate. Cleaned up house. Mopped kitchen. Dresses and went downtown and helped at the store at noon and home at 1:15. Watched program at 1:30. Went to basement and messed around some. Jesse’s family came at 6:45 and left at 7:50. Dr. Lilly called and said that he visited Dr. Nuge about 1 ½ hours this afternoon. All aircraft & planes on strike. 10000 passengers stranded in New York alone.


22. Up at 7:40. Cloudy. Temp 36. Ate. Raining at 8:30. Straightened up around the house... Dressed and went down to the store to help during noon hour. Samps don’t work on Wednesdays anymore. Home and watched TV for a while and cleaned some. I went to Princeton with Ethel and Shelby Jean shopping. Raining. Home at 8:00. Hi School tournament in Princeton. Athens High beat Montcalm by 7 points. To bed by 11:45.


23. Up at 7:00. Temp 52. Cloudy & raining some. Ate and read paper and dressed and went downtown and helped out at store at noon. Got letter & ck from Fred Ball and took them down to Dr. Vermillion’s home at 2:00. Geo Brammer drove up just as I was going up on porch. I went out to the car and talked to him a while. Then watched TV till 4 and baked a pound cake for Uncle Hade’s birthday dinner Sunday at Quinzetta’s. They are coming up if weather is ok.


24. Up at 7:00. Ate. Temp 52. Clear. Sun out. Iced my cake. I cleaned up yard of eaves and limbs from trees. Dressed and went down and helped at store at noon. Home and cleaned the striped grass away from fence on Uncle Hade’s driveway. Got tomato stakes and set up by my fence. Put out 1 bu. Of potatoes & onions I got down at store. Ate supper and Mrs. Rogers called and we talked 45 minutes. Then at 8:00, I went down to Quinzetta’s to Mimi’s party. Hot dogs. QD & Ennis & Jesse & Lodema there. Girls went to hop sock dance. Home at 10:00. Washed my hair and watched TV till 11:30.


25. Up at 8:15. Ate. Temp 56 & raining. At 9:45, Sis called. They were going to Princeton to have Finkleman fill out their income tax blank. We went on to Bluefield VA. Just pouring rain. College Avenue in Bluefield was covered with water. I never saw anything like it. Back at Jelayne’s and ate dinner. I bought a platter for $1.00 at Jelayne’s. Stopped in Princeton. Snowing & wind up. Got home at 3:30. We must have had lots of rain as my basement has water in the coal room and canning room. Went over to Uncle Hade’s house and turned up the gas. Just pouring the snow. Went to bed at 11:00.


26. Sunday Up at 8:00.Partly cloudy. Ate. Sun out. Temp 24. Warmed up during the night. Dressed and at 11:00, Uncle Hade and MaryLee & Delmer came at 12:30. We went down to Sissie’s for Uncle Hade’s Birthday Dinner. What a dinner we had. Back here at 4:30 and they left at 5:30. I laid down ad slept till 7:10. Went over to Casto’s a while. They were gone Saturday while the wind and snow storm was on. Garnet Gautier came at 8:00 and left at 9:30.


27. Up early at 6:50. Ate. Sun out. Temp 54. Went over to Uncle Hade’s house and cut down gas. Dressed and went down to Mrs. Lilly’s at 10:30. Helped serve 14 Dental Ladies dinner at 12:00. Home at 2:00. Fred Coburn and James Neely was here and had cut down one locust tree and took the other one down and piled limbs and took out 2 limbs of apple tree in the yard. Paid him $5.00. I took the limbs & piled them & cleaned up yard and raked down from trees. Called Sis and Ethel. At 7:20 I went down to Dr. Lilly’s & home by 9:00. Agnes Jones called and asked me about Larry’s wreck up at McCullocks.


28. Temp 50. Up at 7:40. Raining some. Cloudy all day. Went down to store and helped during noon hour. Got mail and home by 1:15. Watched programs. Gathered up clothes and washed after 4:00. Drained and washed out hot water tank. Was it dirty. Oh boy. Ate supper at 6:00.At 7:15 I went over and sat with Mrs. Casto for a while and home at 9. Listened and watched one hour program on John F Kennedy 40 days as president. Temp 40 at 9:00. Clear and may snow before morning.


March


1. Up at 7:00. Cloudy and raining just a little. Ate, dressed & took down my clothes. They were dry and flushed out my hot water tank again this morning. Went down to see Dr. Vermillion awhile. At 10:30 back to store to help out at noon. Home and watched Kennedy’s press conference. Sprinkled my clothes to iron later this evening. Still cloudy & misting rain. Temp 42. At 6:45 went down to Ethel’s awhile. Misting rain as I came home at 8:40. May snow.


2. Up at 8:00.  Snowed just a little during the night. Temp 34 when I got up. Worked in can room awhile. At 11:45 I went down to store and helped out at noon. Home at 1:15 and watched TV programs until 2:30. Went back to can room and put screen in window that I had brought from the office. Fits very good.  Ate supper and at 6:15 went down to QD’s. Home at 8:15 Clear. Was a nice day. Still snow in drifts.


3. Up at 7:30. Ate. Temp 38. Sun out and warming up a lot. Went out and dug my carrots and fixed ground to plant my peas. In the morning. Dressed and went down to office and gave Fred Ball credit for his account. Helped at store & home at 1:10. Cleaned my carrots and put in the refrigerator. Went out and cut weeds in garden and thorns. Took dirt away from my walk in back yard. Ate supper and worked outside some more. At 7”30 WVa basketball played William & Mary. WVa lost. Cut heat off early this morning and have not had it back on.


4. Up at 7:00. Temp 52, partly cloudy. Ate and planted one row of peas. Carl McManaway


Came and paid $4.00 he owed Dr. Vermillion. I dressed and Quinzetta and I went to Princeton. Got home at 2:00 and left at 10 AM. I planted another row of peas. At 3:00 this afternoon it rained some. Temp got up to 69. Heat still cut off. At 4:30 I went down to Dr. Lilly’s. He gave me checks to pay bills while they are gone to Florida for 1 month. They will leave early Monday morning. Went on down to Sissie’s and ate supper with them. Home at 7:30. John Pettrey died yesterday suddenly.


5. Sunday   Up at 9:25. Ate. Temp 62 and partly cloudy, Cleaned Pete’s cage up and took a bath and dressed. Ate dinner at 1:50. Went down to see Charlie Martin a few minutes, He has been in hospital for 7 days with blood clots in his legs. On to Graham Chapel to funeral of John Pettrey. Church full. Saw so many people. Home at 4:00. Dr. & Mrs. Lilly had stopped by and left a note. At 5:15 I went down to Dr. Lilly’s awhile. Dr. Scott’s family was there, Vergie D & Ora Peters. Got home at 6:45. Temp went up to 70 today.


6. Up at 7:00. Ate. Sun out. Temp 58. Went out and picked up limbs in yard. Mrs. Casto came over. Dressed to down to Dr. Vermillion’s. Paid him $4.00 that Carl McManaway had gave me. He is doing fine. Back to store and helped at noon. Home and it went to raining and wind. Dr. & Mrs. Lily left this morning going to Florida for a month with Mabel and Lloyd Lineberry.


7. Up at 7:25. Temp 54. Partly cloudy, then sun came out. My furnace has been cut off since last Friday morning. Dressed and went down to store and helped during noon hour. Home at 1:-00. Nice and warm today. Temp went up to 68 or 69. I called Dr. Richard to stop by as he comes home as I have a letter for him. Ate supper and Dr. Richard stopped in at 8:30 and left at 10:45. Rod Thorn WVU & came home – sick - paper says.


8. Up at 8:00. Cloudy but warm. Temp went up to 60. A nice day. Dressed and went down to store and helped. Home and at 3:50 I went over to visit with Mrs. Foster awhile and home. At 5:15 windy ate supper. Sis called and at 7:15 I went over to Casto’s awhile. Coy gave me a few seeds of summer poinsettia. Wind high and raining at 8:15 when I came home. Boy wind high – blew on till I fell to sleep at 11:00.


9. Temp 20. Got up at 5:00 and turned the heat on. Up at 6:50. Snowing – ground covered- and pouring snow. Finished letter to Dr. & Mrs. Lilly. Dressed and went down to mail letter and help at the store at noon. Home & it snowed all day and windy. At 5:45 Dr. Dick Lilly came for mail and left at 6:30. Ate and sowed summer poinsettia seed that Mr. Casto had given me. Temp 20-26 all day. Went over and turned up heat in Uncle’s house and watched Jack Paar show. Ed Sullivan is in a fight with Jack. His show was a good one. Will wait for the outcome of it. Temp 20 at bedtime. Windy and snowing at 1:00AM.


10. Up at 7:15. Windy & Snowing. Temp 19. Cleared off and melting some. At 10:00 Mrs. Vermillion called for me to get their milk & mail & bring it to them. I left a 10:30 and then back to store to help during noon hour. Home at 1:00. Watched TV and went out and sowed my lettuce bed. I already had it ready & transplanted one tomato plant. Only one cucumber came up – will try again. Ate supper at 5:30 & watched TV till 11:00 and went to bed. Sis called at 8:45. Stars shining bright with some wind.


11. Temp 30. Sun out bright and melting some snow. Up at 7:15, ate and cleaned bird cage. At 11:00 dressed and went down to Mrs. Jennings for a quart of milk. Got mail and had a card from Dr. Lilly in Jacksonville Florida – fine. Home and at 12:20 and ate. Baked a custard pie & Sis called for me to come down and eat supper with them. Mr. John Bailey brought me 10 bales of straw. I took 2 slices of custard pie down to Samps and Sis. Good supper and home at 8:00. A fine day. Windy. Temp went up to 58.


12. Sunday   Up at 7:15. Temp 52. Sun out. Ate & at 10:00 went down and got Dr. Lilly’s mail. Took it down to Dick but he was not at home. Came home and walked out through the cemetery and back as Mae Martin came to town. Ate dinner and watched basketball game. A good one. At 4:45 went down to Fred Rogers and he was not home. At 5:15 Dr. Dick came and we ate custard pie. He left at 6:00. No one else came till Janice Terry came to Uncle Hade’s house. I showed it to her and her husband.


13. Up at 7:15. Cloudy. Ate. Sis called for me to go down to Dr. Vermillion’s for cold medicine for Samps. She did not go to school today. Back to store and helped at noon. Nice and warm today. At 2:30, I moved 10 bales to the garden and stacked it up out of yard. Repoled 11 tomato plants. My summer poinsettias Mr. Casto gave me are up nicely. Planted them Thursday morning – 5 days. Ate supper and went to see how Samps is = better and sitting up. Jesse came. Home at 9:10. Floyd Patterson won the fight over Johansson.  Jack Paar and Ed Sullivan debate at 11:50. Sullivan failed to show up and Jack really let go full blast against Ed. Raining hard at 10:3


14. Up at 7:30. Temp 52 and sprinkling rain some. I turned on heat. Ate and dressed & went down to Dr. Vermillion’s. Took his check that Mrs. Otis Wiley sent to me for $5.00. Back to store and helped at noon. Samps too sick to work. Lodema gave me 2 dozen of her own eggs. Home at 1:15 and watched my programs. Slept from 4-4:30. Dr. Dick stopped by for a while. At 5:15 Janice and Jack Terry came to look over Uncle Hade’s house again. Eula, Harry and Vickie came. Jack & Janice came & said that they would take the house if they would underpin it and put storm windows on windows. At 7:20, I went over and sat with Mrs. Casto till 9:30. Yesterday at 1:00 down at the college, a student and his wife was found gassed from their cook stove – nearly dead.


15. Up at 7:15. Ate. Partly cloudy & windy. Wrote MaryLee a letter. Dressed and went down and mailed it about house. Helped at the store at noon. Home at 1:15 & watched my programs. Took up trash and straw out of yard. At 2:30, temp went up to 60. Sun out and a fine day. I went down to Quinzetta’s at 5:30. Ennis and Fern came later. Jesse’s all came. Samps is better. Home at 9:00. Raining. Temp 42 and no wind. The college man is still unconscious from being gassed. His wife is better.


16. Temp 38 & clear. Rained during the night they say a lot. Mrs. Cinna Wagner Lilly died suddenly in Florida. Home at noon and watched TV & worked in basement awhile. At 4:30 I went down for a quart of milk & down to QD’s for a while. At 6:00 I ate and washed my hair. No one came. Talked to Dick at 9:50 PM Went to bed and could not sleep. Up at 11:00…to bed at 11:30…up at 12:10…watched TV until 1:00.


17. Temp 20. Ice cold & clear. Ate and dressed and went over town at 11:30. Helped at store at noon and home at 1:00. Mrs. Estelline McManaway died yesterday. At 2:30 I baked Jesse a custard pie. At 6:45 Sis & Samps came and at 7:30 Jesse, Lodema and Mimi came. I made coffee and they all ate the custard pie. At 4:30 I went down to see Dr. Vermillion and home at 5:30. Raining at 10:00 tonight. Temp 30. To bed at 11:30.


18. Up at 7:45. Ate. Cloudy. Temp 24. Sleeting and raining & freezing ice all over everything. I baked a custard pie at 11:30. Went downtown for mail. Got a letter from MaryLee and she said that she had a cold and sick so she would not be up tomorrow. Watched basketball. Dick stopped in at 2:30. At 5:00 I went down to Quinzetta’s for supper. Home at 7:45. Temp 30. Got card from Dr. Lilly. No fight tonight. Went to bed at 11:15.


19. Sunday. Up at 9:00. Temp 36. Partly cloudy & misting rain. Later went down got mail & took Dick’s down and put it on the back porch. He was still in bed. Stopped at Alice Lee’s as I came home. Harry came down and looked Uncle Hade’s house over. Ethel called for me to come down and eat dinner with her and Aunt Emma. I did and home at 2:30.Mrs. Cinna Wagner Lilly buried today in Athens cemetery. Watched basketball. Virgie Oxley called for Dr. Lilly’s address in Florida. Called Fred Rogers and talked for a while.


20. Up at 7:30. Partly cloudy. Ate and cleaned up house. Dressed. A lady came & wants to rent Uncle Hade’s house. I showed it to her. At 11:00, Uncle Hade & Ellis Crawford came. Raymond Sigmon came to check on his bill with Dr. Vermillion. All gone by 11:30. I went down got mail and worked at the store at noon. Home at 1:00. I watched my programs and at 4:00 I baked a lb. cake. Raining just a little. Mr. Casto brought me a package of frozen strawberries. At 9:40, Dick stopped by to get the mail. Cloudy. Seeded some more pepper plants.


21. Up at 7:15. Raining. Ate. Temp 33. Later sleeting, freezing rain and temp dropped to 30.Icicles all over trees two or three inches long. Mrs. Vermillion called for me to bring their milk and mail down. Margaret is in the hospital in Beckley – a slight operation this morning. Back to store & helped at noon. Home and started dinner at 5:30 for Sissie’s birthday today. They came at 5:00 and we ate. Later QD’s family came & Jesse’s all came. I served ice cream, cake, custard pie, coffee and peanuts. All gone by 9:45. Still raining but no ice. Temp up to 34. A nice visit with all of the family here – first time in over a year.


22. Up early. Raining some. At 8:30 Mrs. Vermillion called for me to come at once. Dr. was bad. I dressed and hurried down there. Dr. was suffering much pain in arms and chest. I got ready and gave him a hypo and it was 1 hr. and 15 min before he began to ease down. At 11:00 I came home and went back down to store to help. At 1:00 I went back down to see how Dr. was feeling. Home at 1:40 and watched TV. I went down in the basement and washed my dirty clothes. Ate supper and Jean Conner came and paid the rent. I dressed and went down to see Dr. Nuge at 6:30 and home at 8:00. He is feeling better and was sitting up in his chair. Watched TV till 11:30 and went to bed. I got a letter today from Mrs. Lilly in Florida.


23. Up at 7:00. Temp 30. Ate. Cloudy and sprinkling rain. I dressed and went downtown and got Mrs. Vermillion’s milk and mail & went down to see how Dr. is feeling. At 11:30, Came back to store and helped at noon and home. I sprinkled my clothes down to iron and later watched my programs. I ironed starting at 4:00. At 5:00, Sis called saying that they were going out for hamburgers. I went with them to Jylanies out on the Bluefield Road. Back to Basil Shumate’s for dessert & hamburger for Sis. Bud came in the restaurant and after we finished, he showed us his motel. Boy, it is nice. I went over to Mrs. Casto’s awhile.


24. Up at 7:25. Temp 31. Raining mixed with snow. Sis stopped and borrowed my coral beads. Cloudy and drizzling most all day & cool. I helped at store at noon, home and watched TV. Cleaned house.


25. Temp 34. Partly cloudy. Up at 7:00, ate, dressed and went down to the bank at 8:30 to make a deposit for Dick. At 9:00, Sis and Samps came and we went to Princeton looking around and back to the Mountain Lion Restaurant to eat dinner and home at 1:20. Put out my rhubarb plants (2 of them). A man and woman came and talked to me about Uncle’s house. At 4:30 Dr. Dick stopped in. I ran the w=sweeper and cleaned up some. Jesse’s stopped going to Princeton.  I went with them and home by 8:15. Cut off furnace last Saturday night.


26. Sunday Up early. Temp 45. Ate, dressed and read the paper. Went down & got mail for Dr. Dick. Took it down and left it on the porch. On over to Jesse’s. He cut off lamb’s tails and set out 4 chestnut trees. Home at 12:45. Ate dinner at 2:30. Ethel called for me to go to the Vermillion cemetery & back to Athens cemetery. Nice day and home at 4:00. Watched TV and no one came.


27. Up at 7:15 and ate. Temp 54. Clear and sunny. Dressed, read paper and at 10:00 went down to see Dr. Vermillion a few minutes. At the post office, they told me that Garnet Gautier fell yesterday down on river and broke her hip. Mrs. John Dobbins died this morning & Mr. Rufus Butler died last night. I helped out at store and home at 1:15, At 2:00 I went down in lot and picked up a bushel basket of paper & junk and some thistles. Watched TV from 3 to 4. Went back and cut some weeds & Johnson grass in garden. Ate and at 5:20 went down to Quinzetta’s to set out three rose bushes. But they were to be put in water for 25 hours. Home at 8:00. Temp went up to 71 today.


28. Up at 6:40. I baked a custard pie early. I called Dick to come and have supper with me. Made slaw and put on a roast. Dressed and went downtown for mail & milk. I helped at store at noon. Home at 12:30. Set table and watched TV & got everything ready for supper at 5:30. Raining at 3:00. Leaned back porch and washed lawn chairs. Dick came at 5:30; we ate and talked until 7:00. He went to Princeton at 7:10. Ethel called for me to come down. Aunt Emma real sick. I rushed down. Temp 105.01 at 8:00. The ambulance came and took her to Bluefield Sanitarium. I got home at 8:40.


29. Up early. Ate. Cool & clear. At 9:00 I called Ethel to see how Aunt Emma is – no better. Mrs. Vermillion called for me to get milk and mail for them. Helped at the store at noon. Home and dressed Bluefield Sanitarium to see Aunt Emma – no better. Ethel was going to come home with me to get her car but she could not. I got home at 5:15. I saw Garnet Gautier and she was suffering. Dr. Raub set her hip yesterday. Ate supper and Margaret White called at 8:30 from Pearisburg abut Aunt Emma. Fred Rogers called at (:30 stating that Dr. and Mrs. Lilly would be in around 12:00.  Had a time getting Dick and at 10:45 I got him.  At 11:15 Ethel called and said that she had just gotten a nurse for Aunt Emma.


30. Up at 8:00. Cool. Temp 40. Ate & dressed and called Dr. Lilly. I took down his tomatoes and mail and took Mrs. V. her mail and milk – 2 gal. Back to store and helped at noon. Home and went out and cleaned straw back of one row. So if possible, I will plant potatoes tomorrow. I brought Mrs. Casto’s Bobby over to keep until they get home on Monday from New Jersey. Planted Mrs. Vermillion’s tomato seed – beefsteak. She gave me watermelon seeds. Ethel called at 11:15 saying that Aunt Emma is no better. Dee is coming in today.


31. Good Friday. Raining when I got up and was a messy day. Dressed and went downtown at 12:00, got milk and groceries. Home and just fooled around. Elvie Pettrey called wanting Uncle Hade’s house. Woody brought some folks up last night also. Jack Terry went to Tralee to see MaryLee this morning. He came for the keys at 3:30. They are taking over the house. Perry Martin’s house lumber was put on lot today. At 7:00 went down to Ethel’s to chat awhile with Dee and Helen. They think that Aunt Emma is some better. Eva stayed with her tonight. No nurse.


April


1. Up at 7:30. Temp 32. Snowing, Raining and wind high. Ate and dressed. Went down to see Mrs. Vermillion awhile. Got Dr. Lilly’s mail and stopped there and back to the store. Had a flat and got home at 1:00. Ethel stopped a minute and will call me if I am to go to Bluefield to stay with Aunt Emma tonight. At 4:00, Sis and Samps came for a while. I left at 5:00 to go to Bluefield to stay with Aunt Emma at hospital. Aunt Emma got worse at 10:45 and continued all night.


2. Easter Sunday. At 7:15 I called Ethel that Aunt Emma had a bad night and for her to come over. She got there at 8:30. I came home at 9:45 and slept some. Windy. My bird bath was froze hard. Temp 30 in Bluefield a lot lower here. No one came. I just wandered around. Something ate up 1 of my tomato plants, 3 poinsettia plants and 1 other plant that I don’t know what it is. I set trap in under the window sill. Cold tonight. Temp 30 at 9:30.


3. Caught a mouse in window this morning. Up at 7:30. Temp 30. Ground is covered with snow and still snowing. Men starting Perry Martin’s house today. I went out there a few minutes. Dressed and went down to store to help out during the noon hour. Just pouring snow and home at 1:00. Jack Terry came this morning to Uncle Hade’s house and was there until 4:00.Took in paint. Temp stayed around 38 all day. Pat Twohig came and brought my affiliated fund stock. I washed windows in front door and one in dining room. Cold and snowed some all day.


4. Temp 30. Snowed during night and still at 9:00. Ate and dressed and took Mrs. Casto’s bird, Bobby, back to her. They came in last night. I went down to see Ethel and back to store and helped at noon and home at 1:20. Dr. Toothman came for Red Cross and I gave $1.00 and looked on book and on January 21st I gave $1.00. I washed windows and started in sand the flower that Mr. Casto gave me last Thursday. Ate supper at 5:30. Dressed and went down to see Dr. Uriah & Dr. and Mrs. Lilly came. I got home at 9:15. Temp 30 at 9:15.


5. Temp 30 at 7:00. Partly cloudy. Sun came out. Men started framework on house. I washed back glass in storm door. Dressed and went down and got med. For Dr. Vermillion & took mail down. Back to store at 11:30 and helped at store. Home at 1:20. Sis and Samps came while I was eating supper to get his 2 planks that he had here. Raining. Ethel blew for me to go to Bluefield to see Aunt Emma in hospital. I also visited Garnet Gautier & George Coburn. Home at 9:45. We stopped at JeLayne’s and ate a hot dog. Snowing some.


6. Temp 30. Clear and cold. Up at 7:00. Ate and cleaned some. Went downtown and paid my water bill. I helped at store at noon. Home at 1:15. I watched 1:30 TV show. Washed window in living room & transplanted poinsettia plants – 6 of them. At 6:30, Eula & Vickie came, Harry later came. Left at 8:15. Mrs. Rogers called and we talked about 30 minutes. Cold. Temp in the 30’s. Clear, partly but windy today.


7. Up early and cleaned my house. Dressed and went downtown & helped out at store at noon. Home at 1:15 and watched TV until time to bake a custard pie for Jesse. Took it down to the store at 5:40. Went on down to see QD. He had not come in from school when I left at 7:15. I went over and loafed with Mrs. Casto till 9:30. Home, watched TV and went to bed.


8. Up at 7:00. A nice day. Went out and planted 2 rows of potatoes. Sun out. Nice and warm. At 11:00 Sis and I went to Bluefield. I shopped for a dress but too fat to wear a 18 or 20 so I did not get any. We ate dinner in Va. Got home at 4:00. Samps took an early bus from Princeton to go to see his daughter, Ruth, in Roanoke. I went down to Dr. Lilly’s at 7:00. Got home at 10:00. Watched the fight. To bed at 11:30. Clear.


9. Sunday   Up at 7:00. I am starting on a diet today to lose 10 pounds. Ground covered with snow. I went back to bed. Got up at 9:00. Sis called and was ready to go down and she called back saying that Samps was in Princeton so she had to go and get him. I stayed home. Temp in 30’s. No sun at this writing – 1:15. Windy all day. Watched basketball game on TV and slept some. A bad day. Chilly. Temp in 40’s all day. Aaron Pettrey died today – Dee Shepherd’s father.


10. Up at 7:00. Raining & sleeting some. Windy. Glen White came in and paid me $5.00 for Dr. Vermillion. I dressed and took it down to Dr. and back to store to help at noon. Home at 1:15. Aaron G. Pettrey died yesterday – Dad’s first cousin. I cleaned kitchen floor – ½ of it- and waxed it. Went up to Harry’s and back home. Dressed. Harry and Eula came and we went to Princeton to Aaron Pettrey’s home. Saw so many people and we got home at 10:00. Snowing when we got to Princeton and when we came home. Temp 33.


11. Up at 7:00. Ate. I am on a diet now to lose about 10 pounds since Sunday. 155 weighed. I cleaned rest of kitchen floor and waxed it. At 11:00, I dressed and heard a chicken squawk and out at the garden gate, a black dog had one of Dr. Toothman’s white hens down. The men working on Perry’s house said that 2 dogs had killed 3 or 4 and sure enough, they had, when I checked on it. I had a flat and could not get downtown in time to help at noon. Same tire that Roy Beckett fixed for me on April 1st. Straightened up the kitchen and painted the radiator in kitchen.  Finished at 9:00. Ethel called and said that she brought Aunt Emma home at 4:30. A fine sunny day Temp went up to 54.


12. Up at 8:00 Temp 34. Snowed at 7:00. Raining, Windy all day. Dressed and went down & helped at store at noon. Home at 1:20. Watched TV & just messed around till 4:00. Went down to see Aunt Emma a while and on down to Quinzetta’s. Home at 7:30. Raining hard. Watched Adolph Eichmann’s trial on TV till 11:00. Nobody came.  (First trial ever to be televised. CKM)


13. Up at 7:00. Snowing. Temp 30. Raining also. Dressed and went down and helped at store at noon. Jesse gone. Home at 1:15. Lost 3 pounds since Sunday. Shelby Jean called for me to come down and paint her throat at Ethel’s. Aunt Emma seems better. Home at 4:00. Snowing some all day. Temp never got above 33 all day - Is 30 now at 8:30.


14. Up at 7:00. Temp up to 40. Sun out – looks like a nice day. Dressed and went down to see Dr. Nuge and back by Dr. Lilly’s. He was uptown and I saw him when I stopped for mail, He seemed to be feeling very good. I stopped at store and helped during noon hour. Home and ran sweeper and scrubbed front porch. I got 14 plants from Mr. Casto – put out 10 and took 4 down to Sis. I got beauty bush sprouts and weeping willow limbs for Mr. Casto. I wanted some. Home at 7:30. No one came. Put out my cabbage plants. Hope they do okay. Temp went up to 64 today. So nice and warm. No wind.


15. Up at 7:00. Temp 44. Clear. A fine morning. Ate and went out and set out 2 beauty bushes and 2 rhubarb plants to replace the 2 I ordered – no good. Jesse came for me to go to below Spanishburg to sale of Wyatt’s Mill. We went and sale did not start until 2:00 Came home at 11:30. I went down for mail, stopped by the store a minute and home. Went over to Mrs. Casto’s a few minutes and home. Fixed dirt and sowed my zinnias & large red scarlet seed. And just messed around. After supper I washed my hair. No one came.


16. Sunday. Up at 8:00. Ate, dressed and read the Paper. Windy and cloudy, a mean day. Rained some and snowed too. Dr. Toothman came and brought me a cake that Mrs. Toothman had sent me. Watched baseball game. No one came all day.


17. Up early. Cloudy and wind high. Temp 34. Ate, washed and hung sheets, bedspread and rugs out on line till the wind got so bad that I had to bring them in. Dr. Lilly called. I dressed and went downtown and helped at store and mailed check to Gas Company and Telephone Company. Home at 1:00. Sprinkled clothes. Watched TV and ironed all of my clothes. At 5:00 started snowing hard and temp is 34. Ground covered with snow at 9:30 and wind high too. Watched commensuration at 9:30 tonight. A new report on Castro at 9:30. No one came.


18. Up early. Ground covered with snow. Temp 30. No wind. Dressed and went downtown to pay my taxes – second half – and helped at store at noon. Still snowing at 10:45. Home at 1:10. I got everything ready to bake a custard pie for Dr. Vermillion. I did not pay taxes as sheriff was not in. Snowing at 3:00 a little. Temp stayed at 34 all day. Cloudy. No sun. I ate supper after doing pie. At 7:00 I went down to Ethel’s to see Aunt Emma. She is better. Eva is there helping out. Ethel is back in the store. Home at 9:15. Misting rain. Temp 32.


19. Up early 8:00. Ate. Snowed just a little. Temp 32. Dressed and took Dr. Vermillion a custard pie. Margaret had to have a piece right there. Hattie French was there. Back to store to help at noon. Home at 1:00. Reset tomato plants that Mrs. Vermillion gave me seed. Looked garden over. Ate supper at 5:00 and went down to Quinzetta’s at 7:30. Sun came out some during day but still cool.


20. Up at 7:15. A big frost. Cool but clear. Mowed ½ of yard, in & dressed. Took medicine down to Dr. Vermillion. He said that he was not feeling good. Saw Dr. Lilly at bank. He told me that Frank Wyant was found in his home at Hinton dead. He had shot himself. Didn’t know when he did it. I helped at the store at noon and home. I mowed rest of yard and put out my golden weeping willow sprouts that Sis gave me. Sprouted good.


21. Up early. Ate. Raining some. Dressed and went downtown and helped at the store at noon and home. Reset poinsettia plants and Mrs. Vermillion’s tomato plants. Watched TV. At 2:30 I went down to Alice Lee’s and took 2 dresses for her to alter and she was over at Garnet’s. I went over there. Garnet came home Monday and is doing fine. Pouring rain at 3:30. After supper I went over to Mrs. Casto’s at 7:30. Mr. Casto gone to Jackson Mills and we chatted till 10:00. Baked Aunt Emma a custard pie at 4:00.


22. Up at 7:30. Ate and cleaned up house. Warmer a lot. Gene and Tracy came to hook Perry Martin up for water and sewer. Finally found sewer from station. Dr. Withers stopped at 9:30 for me to come up for a visit at 3:30 Monday afternoon. Dressed and went downtown for mail and gro. and home. Ate a bite. Sis called and we went to Princeton at 3:00 and got home at 6:00. I went on down with her and we put out 4 roses she got in Princeton. I ate supper and baked her a custard pie. Home at 9:00. To bed at 11:00.


23. Sunday Up at 9:00. Ate & Mrs. Lilly called saying that Mrs.Vira Lilly died last night. I went out through cemetery.  At 10:40 went to Ethel’s and took Aunt Emma her pie. Raining when I came home. Sis & Samps stopped when they came in from church for me to come down and have dinner with them. I did and a fine dinner and we just played around. I got home at 5:00. At 7:00 Eva Shrader came and left at 9:00. Ethel came for her. Warmer a lot.


24. Up at 7:15. Temp 62. Clear. Ate & set plants out in yard in sun. Dressed and went down for mail & helped at store. Home at 1:00. Dressed and went over to Memorial Funeral Home in Princeton to see Aunt Vira Lilly. Saw her nephews and nieces. Dr. and Mrs. Lilly came while I was there & Lelia Caldwell’s sister from Beckley was there. Home at 3:10. Dressed and went up to Dr. and Mrs. Withers at 3:30. Had a nice visit with them. So many pretty flowers in bloom. Home at 6:00. Ate supper. Fern & Ennis came. Fern brought me a souvenir from her trip to Washington. She left last Wednesday night and back Saturday night – her graduating class. I went down at 7:00 to see Dr. Vermillion awhile. Mrs. Anderson came over to play Canasta with them. I came home at 8:00. Temp went up to 76 today.


25. Up at 7:00. Ate. Windy. Sun out but partly cloudy. Went out in garden with mower and mowed up far side of garden and puled some Johnson grass. Dressed and went down to Alice Lee’s, she checked my dresses. I went over to see Garnet awhile, then to see Charlie Martin and on to help at store at noon. Home at 1:00. Went to basement and fixed holes in 2 gourds to put out for birds to build in. Dressed and went out to cemetery burial of Mrs. Vira Lilly. I cut thistle and moved the creeping moss to front yard by fence. Ate supper and went over to Mrs. Casto’s a while. Home. Raining at bedtime and wind high.


26. Up at 7:00. Temp 56 & dropping. Cloudy. Sis called and said that Mimi is sick and Lodema cannot come to the store today. Ennis just called and asked me to go to Dr. V. and get med. for Mimi. Helped at store at noon. Home. At 2:30 I went down to Alice Lee’s & got one of my dresses she altered for me – the one that MaryLee gave me. Home at 3:30. Temp went up to 62 and windy. I ate supper and at 7:00 I took 4 sack material down to Ethel’s for Eva to make me a skirt and a pajama top while she is here. Home at 8:30. Watched TV and checked my bank account off. $70.00 I cannot find. To bed at 12:30. Cool, turned heat on.


27. Temp 46. Cloudy and windy. Paper boy failed to bring me a paper. I called him and still no paper. Went downtown and took my bank statement & Guy found my mistake in addition at once – my mistake. Helped at store. Lodema is home with Mimi - still sick. Home at 1:00. Watched TV and cleaned up my shoe box. Put winter shoes away. I ate supper at 5:30. Sun out and a little cold all day. At 7:30 I went down to see Dr. Lilly’s a while and home at 9:30. Jesse brought me a lot of eggs. Luther Martin died today.  Hypes man shot himself. Snowed, sleeted, rained, sun shone and wind high all day.


28. Up early. Snowing when I got up. Temp 33. Cloudy, windy & cold. Ate and dressed and went downtown & got mail and 2 dresses that I ordered from Sears & Roebuck. Got gro. home and baked Jesse a custard pie. Mowing on yard and 2 boys came and finished the rest for me for 50 cents. Mr. Casto brought me a big bowl of vegetable soup. Watched baseball game. At 4:30 I went to store and took Jesse his custard pie. He ate it all by 6:00. Went down to QD’s and checked on Mimi and home and ate supper. Sis called and I went down there for a piece of her custard pie that she baked as good as mine. Jesse’s all came and we had more pie and coffee. Windy all day & chilly. Dave Garraway’s wife died from an overdose of sleeping pills. Found dead during the night.

30. Sunday Up at 8:00. Ate. Cloudy. Temp 46. Bathed and dressed. Cleaned up house and watered plants. Put some on back porch for a while. Wind up. Ate dinner. Watched TV – baseball. Went over and chatted with Mrs. Casto a while and home. At 5:00 ate supper. Dr. Lilly called and I went down to Ethel’s a while. Home at8:50. Cloudy. Temp 48 at 9:30.

1. Up at 7:00. Temp 50. Raining just a little. Ate. At 8:00, Dr. Lilly called saying that John Peters had died last night – Ora Peters brother. They came for her yesterday morning. I went out and cut twine on baled straw & scattered it out some. In & dressed & went down to help at store during noon hour. Sun came out nice & warm. Home at 1:15 & messed around. I washed windows in dining room & on outside. Raining.


2. Up at 6:10 to see our government put a man in space but it was called off due to bad weather. Ate and dressed. Went down to see Dr. Vermillion at 10:45 and got a slip to see Dr. Shanklin. Went to store and helped during noon. Home at 1:15. Dorsey Martin came for me to go out and see Charlie. We gave him 20 drops of digitalis and he got quiet and went to sleep. Home and warmer a lot. I went out to cemetery for burial of Luther Martin – Zinnie’s brother. Went down to Quinzetta’s to get curlers so Ennis can do my hair tomorrow. Visited with Mrs. Casto until 9:40.


3. Up at 7:20. Ate and went out in garden. Put out plant Sis gave me – red hot poker- last night. Ennis called for me to come down and she would fix my hair. I helped at store at noon. Went to Ennis’s and got home at 3:45. Watered all of my plants & put dryer on my hair and it dried quickly. Cancer fund raisers stopped in for a donation. Troy Conner came and paid his rent. I ate and went down to QD’s for Ennis to take out rollers & comb my hair, Looks very good. We mowed lower part of their yard. I got home at 7:45. Dr. Gatherum came out in my garden this morning. Can’t see how I can raise anything without plowing.


4. Up at 7:15. Frost this morning. Ate and went out in garden. Jesse and Samps brought up Jesse’s plow & tried it out in my garden a little. Went also by the side of my house where I will put out my flowers. Dressed and went to the store and helped. Got a sweater and some shoes at Ethel’s sale. Bone’s store going out of business. Took Lodema home. Got some dirt and home. I set out 2 tomato plants, 1 cucumber with cucumbers on it, 1 cantaloupe hill & sowed 2 rows of peas. Tired. Raining a good shower from 4o’clock on till 6:00.


5. Up at 7:00. Ate. Watched TV today Cornell Shepherd was put into a cone & was shot out into space – 290 miles- and they got him back safe and sound. Dressed and went down to help at the store. Home at 1:00. Rev. Dorsey died suddenly at his home in Speedway. Watched another news report on putting a man into space. Raining today. Another new cast at 4:00. President Kennedy & more on Shepherd. At 6:10 Samps & Sis came and left at 8:00. Temp 46 at 10:00 when I went to bed. I called Dr. Shanklin for an appointment – will be on Wednesday May 10th at 2 PM.


6. Up at 6:50. Ate & read paper. Sun out nicely. Sis came at 9:00 and we went to Princeton shopping. Home at 11:50. Sis has a bad headache. I uncovered my plants in the garden and mopped the front porch & ran sweeper. Temp 72. Watched baseball. At 3:30, I went down for gro. & mail. We did not go to Lashmeet for supper as Sis had a terrible headache all day. I went down at 6:15 and got supper. She was suffering a lot. Home at 9:00. A fine day. Warmer so far.


7. Up at 9:00. Partly cloudy. Temp 68. Warmer a lot. I watered my plants. Dressed and went over to Mr. Casto’s to check on flowers for Mrs. Lilly. He gave me one lettuce, radishes & 2 large pepper plants. I put them out in garden. Raining hard while I was there. I cooked a chicken for dinner and at 2:30 went down to see Sis. She still has some headache and was in bed. She got up and we walked around in the yard and sat on the porch. Temp 74. Home at 4:30. At 6:00 I went down to Dr. Lilly’s and home at 8:30.


8. Up early and went out and put out 2 more tomato plants & 1 cantaloupe. Watched Alan Shepherd arrive in Washington to get his medal from President Kennedy, It was nice. Dressed and went down to help at store at noon. Home at 1:00. At 2:30 I started mowing the yard and trimming. I worked until 5:30. Put out 4 poinsettia plants by side of gas meter this morning. Ate supper. At 6:00 I went out and mowed some more. In and got news between 6:30 and 7:00. Went back out and mowed some more till dark. Then I washed my hair & rolled it up. Aunt Emma called and we talked a long time. She went to Princeton with Ethel – her first trip out since she got sick.


9. Up at 6:45. Nice morning. Warm all night. Left window open at my head and slept under a sheet only. At 8:00 Jesse came and plowed my furrows where I am planting. Finished at 9:30 and I planted 3 rows of corn, 2 rows of beans, radishes, beets, carrots, 1 row cucumbers, by 11:05. I came in and took a bath & dressed and went down and helped at store. Paid the water bill. Home at 1:00. Mowed the rest of the yard that I did not finish yesterday.


10. Up at 8:00. Ate. Read paper. Temp 50 at 9:50. Mr. Tuggle from the gas company came to see me saying that they had made a mistake in my gas bill last month. We had a round. I dressed and left for Bluefield to see Dr. Shanklin at 2:00. Shopped around for a while. Before I went to the clinic. Dr. Shanklin said not too much trouble. Will send away a test and write to me in a few days. Raining at 1:00. I got home at 4:20. Sis called at 5:00. At 7:15 Jesse’s all came and left at 8:30. Raining. Temp at 9:00- 50. Raining from the east. Gene Pennington came in to see about Uncle Hade’s house for Mary & Violet Martin. Too late, it is rented.


11. Up at 6:45. Raining. Temp 50 and rising some. At 8:15, Mrs. Lily called and Dr. Lilly talked some also. They wanted to know what Dr. Shanklin had said. At 9:30, ate and read paper. Feeling fine. Dressed and went down and helped at noon at store. Kenner Alvis died yesterday in Memorial Hospital – 80 years old. Raining hard at 1:00. Home and cleaned dining room & waxed it. Finished at 9:30. Mrs. Rogers called and Sis called twice. I put out 1 pepper plant and several summer poinsettias today.


12. Up at 7:00. Ate. Raining some early. Temp 52. Finished up dining room – all but one window. Dressed and went downtown at 11:30 to help at store at noon. Stopped to see Charlie Martin a few minutes... Home and just cleaned up around all afternoon. Covered my plants as it is getting colder. Ate supper and, at 7:30, I went down to Ethel’s to see Aunt Emma awhile. Home at 9:30. Kenner Alvis funeral and burial today.


13. Sun out. Temp 62. At 1:30 this morning, Mrs. Vermillion called me to come quick. Dr. was in much pain. I dressed and went and gave him a hypo and 2 codeine tablets. Stayed until 5:00. Came home and slept till 9:00. Up. Temp 62 and sun bright. Ate breakfast & dressed and called Dr. Lilly to tell him about Dr. Nuge and I went down at 10:45. Back to store, got groceries and home. Sis called for me to come down and eat dinner. I did and we played croquet. Home at 4:00. Cleaned porch furniture and scrubbed porch and took hose and washed off walks and concrete outside of gate. Ennis & Kay came a few minutes and then went on over to Janice’s and Jack’s at Uncle’s house. I rested on porch.


14. Sunday Mother’s Day. Up at 7:00. Ate. A fine day. Dressed, read paper and went over to Mrs. Casto’s a while. Home at 12:25. Sis and Samps stopped and we went up to restaurant for dinner on me. Home and sat on porch till 3:00 when they left. I went out to cemetery to burial of Copen man – married Arch Craighead’s girl. Went over to farm. No one there. Blake & Frances White came while I was there. I went over to Jesse’s and they were gone. On over to Aunt Pearl and Uncle Rass’s home. At 7:00 I ate and went down to see Dr. Vermillion at 7:30. Home at 9:15.A fine day. Warm. Temp 66 at 9:15.


15. Up at 6:10. Ate. Washed and hung out my clothes. They dried nicely by the time I went down town. I brought them in and helped at the store at noon. Home at 1:00. At 1:40 Ethel called and I went with her and Aunt Emma to Bluefield to hospital for exam. Just poured rain while we were in clinic. Got home at 6:30. Ate and put out 2 rose bushes and have 2 more to put out. Just pouring rain, lighting and thundering at 11:00.


16. Up early. Ate and ironed till 10:30. Alice Lee called. I went down there and she cut off my dress. On down to store to help and stopped & saw Charlie Martin a few minutes. Home at 1:00.Finished ironing from 2:00 to 3:00. Cool today but sun out. Eula J. Martin in hospital. Perry Martin said that Fred Rogers was taken to the hospital in ambulance early this morning. Samps and Sis came and mowed my yard. It was really heavy. Cold. Temp 48. I went over to Mrs. Casto’s a while after all left. I covered my plants at 9:00.


17. Up at 7:00. Ate. Called Mrs. Rogers about Fred. Mrs. Lilly called and Mrs. Vermillion called. She said that there was frost at her house. I started on a compost pile from all of the grass I took off of yard. Dressed and went down to help at store at noon. Home at 1:20. I worked in garden, trimmed grass around yard & tool house. Put fertilizer around cabbage plants & dirt & straw. Put out 2 rose bushes. Jimmy Gore called at 8:00 to see what I knew about Mr. Rogers as Mrs. Rogers had not come home. Mrs. Lilly at 8:30. Jimmy called me again saying Mrs. Rogers had come in and Mr. Rogers was better. Talked to Mrs. Vermillion at 9:15. Ora Peters called about Mr. Rogers. Cold. Temp 5.


18. Mrs. Vermillion called at 7:30 to come. Dr. having a heart attack. I dressed and went down and gave him a shot. Dr. Lilly came down and Fred Cooper came. Dr. suffered until around 10:00. Helped at store at noon and went back down to Dr. Vermillion’s Home at 1:15. Worked some in garden.


19. Up early. Ate and went out to garden to work. Covered up back between corn. At 10 to 10:00, I took a pain in my chest. Came to house and it got worse. Took a pain pill and called Ennis to tell Jesse I would not be able to help at store unless this pain got better. I asked her to call me back in a few minutes. Jesse came in a hurry and he knew that I was sick and called the ambulance & Dr. Hale to be ready and I was off to the hospital in 30 minutes. Dr. and Mrs. Lilly came & Mr. Casto, Gene Pennington & several others before I got gone. Arrived at the hospital and was in oxygen tent in 5 minutes & meds going in blood vein…Hypo and was soon at ease. Ennis went with me. Sis came from school- Samps had called her. Heart attack – blood clot.


20. Very sick. No visitors. Was taken out of oxygen tent this morning. Sis and Samps brought me a potted plant. At midnight I was put back into oxygen tent – too many visitors.


21. Out of oxygen tent at 7:00 this morning – some better. Fern, Kay and Ennis came to see me. Samps and Sis came. Dr. Scott & Beth sent me a potted plant. So nice.

5. Up and ready to come home by ambulance at 11:00. Just pouring rain. Stopped at home then later decided to go down to Quinzetta’s for 2 weeks. So in afternoon I went. Mr. Casto came over and Janice Terry came a few minutes. Settled down at Sis. Put bed in den so I could watch TV.

25. At 3:00 Samps and Sis took me and Dr. Lilly to see Ira Mason Smith about law on fence. Ennis and Wanda came to see me.


26. Up early, packed up and Sis brought me home. Raining. She defrosted refrigerator for me. Went home at 2:30. Mr. Casto came over - My first guest after I got home – with a bowl of strawberries. Sis left. I gave her $50 for taking care of me while I was there – 3 weeks. Sis and Samps came and left at 8:30. I stayed by myself tonight.


27. Up at 7:30. Ate breakfast, made bed and washed dishes. Mitzi came with sugar and mail. Sis came at 11:00 and made me a strawberry pie. Home at 2:00. Sis went to Princeton and home & they came back and picked my peas for me. Samps pulled and cut weeds in garden & cut around yard. Sis took some pie over to Mrs. Casto.


28. Cool. Partly cloudy. Rested most of the morning. Dr. Toothman left me 1 quart of milk and guinea eggs. Ate dinner. QD, Ennis and Kay came awhile. Mrs. Toothman came and left sweet peas. I was on back porch and she left. Mrs. Casto came over and brought back the plate. Later Mrs. Craighead came & Barbara – 8:00 and left at 9:15.


29. Up at 7:30. Did not sleep good. Warmer and sun out. At 10:30 Fred and Elva came & left & came back and brought me a bowl of strawberries. Later Mr. Casto brought me 1 qt. strawberries. Ate dinner. Sis came up about 1:30 and left at 4:00. At 5:05 Mrs. Toothman stopped and brought me frozen sherbet. At 6:15 Garnet Gautier came and left. I was rolling my hair at 8:00, Dr. & Mrs. Lilly came and they left at 9:00 I finished my hair and Fern & Kay came. Mrs. Foster called. I have not rested much today. Warmest day that we have had so far.


30. Up early. Ate and dressed Sis took me over to see Dr. Hale at 10:15. He checked me over and said that I was doing fine. Blood pressure 140. Said that I could drive my car some. We went downtown and shopped awhile. Home at 3:00 and watched TV till 4:00 & Sis went home. They came up later and mowed my yard & Sis and I made 2 strawberry pies. Troy Conner came over and said that he would try to see about fixing my fence at our farm. Sis and Samps went home at 8:30. Samps brought down my reclining chair for me and put it on my porch.


July


1. Up at 8:00. Ate. Dressed and sat on porch till Sis and Samps came at 12:30 and we went to Johnny’s Auction Sale up on Princeton Road. We bought several novelty ashtrays. I went on down home with them and ate supper. Mrs. Lilly called for us to come up – she had a gift for Sis. We went at 7:00 and got home at 9:00.  Thundered and lightning some. Rained some. Samps watered my garden flowers while we were at Mrs. Lilly’s.


2. Sunday Up early. Clear and windy. Ate & dressed & went out on porch and lay down & read paper & slept some. Then went over to Mrs. Casto’s for the first time since I got sick - May 19, 61.Home and ate dinner. Mr. Casto brought me over a strawberry short cake covered in ice cream. At 2:30, Jesse’s family, QD’s & Fern, Sis, Samps and I went over to Glen Alvis’s cabin on beyond Greenbrier in Monroe County for a picnic. Got home at 8:30. Eula and Aileen Jennings came and left at 9:30. Dee & Eva came while I was gone this afternoon.


3. Up at 7:30. Ate. Cool & windy, cloudy, sprinkling rain some. Ennis called. Mitzi called & Sis – 2 calls. I called Ethel. Am resting all morning – tired from yesterday. Raining some at 12:30. Paper boy came and I paid him 80 cents. Sis came at 2:00. At 2:35 Ethel, Walter. Jean, Gary, Connie & Sally came. All gone by 3:30. Sis and I went down to store about 30 minutes. Home and I walked out in the garden and watered some of my flowers. I capped 1 qt. strawberries that Mrs. Rogers brought last night. Kennedy slapped the Taft-Hartley law on striking ship workers. Sis and Samps came up and we picked peas, radishes and lettuce. They left at 9:30.


4. Up at 7:30. Cold. & windy. Ate. Cleaned up dishes, bathed and dressed & read paper. Lots of traffic going by. Ennis called for me to come down and sit in the yard with them. Sis called and said that she had a headache. At 1:30 I called for QD to come up for me. At 2:00 Fern came and I went down to QD’s and spent the afternoon and ate supper with them. Home at 6:30. Sat on porch – or rather laid & slept till Jesse came at 8:00 for me to go for a ride with them. We drove over on Bluefield road and got a milkshake. Back home at 9:00. Watched TV for a while and to bed.


5. Up at 7:00. Raining just a little. Ate & cleaned up dishes. Sis called for me to come down and spend the day with them. Samps came for me at 9:30. After lunch Samps picked 3 qts. raspberries – maybe more. We made 2 pts. Preserves and saved Dr. Vermillion 2 qts. Then Samps picked sour cherries & Sis seeded them and made 2 pts. Preserves. We ate supper and Sis dressed and we went down to see Dr. Nuge. Home at 7:00. At 7:30, Troy and Jean Conner paid rent and told me that Charlie Lane brought wire down and fixed the fence where his cattle were getting in and said not to rush the building of the fence – that he was not ready yet.


6. Up at 7:00. Had a bad night. Disturbed about Charlie Lane’s talk about the line fence. Now he wants 6. to put off building line fence till fall. I did not go to sleep till near to four o’clock this morning. At 2:45 I took ½ glass of whiskey. Could not go to Bluefield to have glasses changed. I was too weak. I laid around on couch all day. At 3:30, I got apples and cooked them & 1 head of cabbage out of the garden. Got card from Doc & Lulu. They are in Arkansas for Doc’s arthritis. No one came today. I set out petunia plants here by the side of the house.


7. Up at 7:30. Cold & windy. Ate, dressed and got ready to go to Princeton to see Dr. Hale. We took Ethel up to hospital to have her leg operated on for varicose veins at 9:00. Sis and I went down to Farm Bureau and bought 20 rods of fencing, 1 roll of barbed wire and staples to build our fence over at the farm. Samps came up at 12:30 for me to go down for Dr. Jennings to bring my wire down and take it to the farm for me. Raining hard at 1:30 – nearly 1 inch. At 5:30 Sis & Samps mowed my yard & Samps took weeds out of my flowers here by the side of the house. Jean and Troy brought me a gallon of raspberries. They left at 10:00. Rescue stopped for a donation from Princeton. T will send check to Willis Reece.


8. Up at 7:00. Ate and washed dishes and dressed. Took Mrs. Casto a quart of raspberries and loafed a while. Dr. Lilly drove up and we talked awhile on street. Ethel called and she got home this morning from hospital. Ate dinner and laid down on the porch awhile.


Mr. Casto brought me a lot of shelled peas & loafed a while. 4:45 Sis came and we took Dr. Vermillion down 3 qts. raspberries. Hattie and Janice were there. Back to store, got groceries and home at 5:50.At 7:00, QD, Kay & Ennis came and later Sis and Samps came- all gone at 9:00.  Mrs. Toothman sent me guinea eggs, 1 qt. milk and flowers. Cold all day.


9. Sunday Up early and dressed. At 10:00 I got in car and drove down to Ethel’s. The first time that I have driven since May 18 – since I got sick. She was gone. Drove on down to Fred & Elva’s and they kept me for dinner. A nice visit with them. Home at 1:30. Laid down and rested till Ethel came at 2:30. She left at 4:00 and soon thereafter Ray and Mae Cheatwood & Luther and Lottie White came and left at 5:30. We had a nice visit. Ate supper and watered my flowers by the side of the house. At 7:30, Jesse, Lodema & Mimi came, When Mitzi got back from church picnic we picked her up down at Webb’s and we drove over to Princeton looking for watermelons. Home at 9:10.


10. Up at 6:45. Cold. Temp 42. Ate, dressed and watched TV till noon. I drove down to hospital and got a letter from ESS and Florence. I mailed a letter to Doc and Lulu in Arkansas. I went on down to Sissie’s and home at 2:30. Watched TV till 4:00. At 5:45 Sis and Samps came and we drove over to farm Troy and Jean were gone. We looked around. Troy has old wire down and some of the posts in and fence row cleaned out. Home and looked around garden. Picked my first cucumber tonight. We were sitting on porch & Dr. Withers came. Stopped a while and said that they were down to visit on July 4th and I was down at QD’s. Dr. Lilly is putting stone on cemetery road today.


11. Up at 6:15. Temp 50 at 6:15. Ate & dressed. Sis came at 8:00. We went to Bluefield to get her new glasses. Shopped around for a while. Ate hamburger and French fries at Ferrell’s. Home at 12:50. Partly cloudy. Laid down and rested awhile. Dr. Lilly came at 1:50 brought me some raspberries. Aunt Pearl called from Allen’s and we talked a while. Rested and watched All Star game and went to sleep. Up at 4:30. Called Kay to come up and help me water my flowers, tomatoes & cucumber. At 6:00, Eva and Louis White came and left at 8:00. I watched TV for a while. Cloudy. Hazelwood boy came – said that he would come in the morning and fix my garden up for me.


12. Up at 7:05. Raining. Temp 58. Ate. Cleaned up dishes, made bed, dressed and read paper. Rained most all day. Rested all morning. Ate dinner at 1:30. Sis and Samps came later. Ethel came for tomato plants. All gone at 4:15. I slept some and went out & put out some scarlet sage plants by side of house & petunia plants & in garden. QD & Kay came up at 6:00 for lettuce and I gave them a cabbage head. I went over to see Jack & Janice at 7:00 a while. House looks fine. At 8:35 Troy, Jean, & girl came to talk about fence & Charlie Lane. He doesn’t want to put his part of fence in now.


13. Up at 6:00. Ate. Dressed and called Sis to go over to the farm with me at 8:00 to see how fence was coming along. Charlie Lane did not come. I got home at 10 to 10:00. Eugene Hazelwood was here to clean garden of weeds where I did not get it planted and cover it with straw & hay. Had Crews to check & fix my brakes for me. I had none. At 4:00 Kay came up and cleaned off the front porch & ran the sweeper and cleaned the bathroom floor & hall & steps downstairs. We drove up to the custard stand for hamburger and French fries and took Kay home and back. Ethel came up from Eastern Star supper and loafed a while.  She brought me boiled ham and salad for dinner. 


14. Up at 6:30. Ate. Raining some. Temp 66. Warmest night last night that we have had. Ethel came at 10:00 and took me to see Dr. Hale. Blood pressure 144 and said to come back in two weeks. We got home at 11:15. Bud Shumate sat on porch and we talked a while. I ate and went down to see Dr. Vermillion a while and we ordered Miltrate that Dr. Hale wanted me to take – 150 tablets. At 110:20 I drove to Sissie’s a while and to store and home and rested a while. Took Meador Bird home at 4:30. Back home rested some more, Sis and Samps came and mowed my yard. And we sprayed tomatoes and went over to Mr. Casto’s and looked over their flowers & garden. Mr. Casto gave me 4 stalks of rhubarb. We went up to custard stand and ate a custard. Home and Mrs. Lilly called and said that Dr. Lilly fell this morning and was paining in his back tonight. Troy Conner said that I need 4 more rods of wire. Raining at 9:00.


15. Up at 7:15. Chilly. Raining just a little. Windy. Dressed and went down to see Dr. Lilly a while. Stopped at store a few minutes & home. Rested most of the afternoon. Mrs. Lida Caperton called. At 1:45 paperboy came and collected 80 cents. Watched baseball game-too cold to rest on porch. Windy. No one came.


16. Sunday Up at 7:00. Some warmer. Ate, dressed and read paper. Got dinner for the first time since I got sick. Fried chicken, made potatoes, salad and gravy. Ate and, at 1:00, watched baseball awhile & rested the rest of the afternoon on porch. Ennis came and we talked awhile. Fern stopped by a minute. A storm came and just poured rain & high wind. Sis and Samps came at 5:30 and ate with me. Left at 9:45. Mae Owens Perdue was buried this afternoon in Athens Cemetery.


17. Up at 6:30. Ate, read paper and went and took my car over to Crews to check brakes – no brake. Went out in my garden and straightened up the corn that wind blew down. Got some cockscomb and set it out beside the house. Dressed. Ora Peters called and we talked awhile. Went down for Sis & we went to Princeton at 11:45 for fence wire. I need more for line fence at farm. $25.00 for 20 rods more. Home and we went down to Sissie’s and she kept me for supper. Raining soon after Samps came. After supper, they went with me over to farm and we left wire. Troy and Jean gone. Back to store & it just poured rain while we were there. Home at 6:15. At 7:00 I went over to Mrs. Casto’s awhile and rested some.


18 Up at 7:00. Partly cloudy. Ate & read paper. Yesterday Mrs. Helen Mahood – Beth Lilly’s mother- was hit with a car in Princeton – broken hip. Just laid around all day. At 3:50 Sis and Samps came and took me home with them for supper and over to Jesse’s awhile. Home at 8:10. Rained a little bit early this morning. Talked to Mrs. Lilly this morning. I took plaster tools over to the farm. Troy’s all gone. Back to pay Doc Jennings. He will take grass for the mowing & hay baling wire. Down to Ethel’s awhile and home at 8:00.


19 Up, ate, and raining hard. Charleston had a flash flood with 250-400 houses demolished 7 12 deaths 7 several missing. Watched TV – Channel 3 of the flood. Went down to see Dr. Vermillion at 2:00. Back and stopped at Ethel’s a minute. Left my watch with Hense and he will take it to plant for a man to fix it. Picked a mess of green beans out of my garden today. My first.


20. Up at 7:15. Another man, Grissom, was shot up in space and landed in the Atlantic Ocean. Man okay, but they lost the cone. Sank to the bottom of the ocean – another first. Raining here early this morning. Mr. and Mrs. Casto left on a trip. He brought over a plant to bloom tonight about 10:00. Ethel came up at 6:00 and left at 7:30 and said that she would be back when the plant bloomed. At 8:15, Janice Terry came over to see plant- it is opening up. Called Ethel and she came. Called Ennis and she came and Wanda and kids. Jack Terry came over and it opened nicely by 8:45. 


21. Up, ate, got clothes together and called Kay. She came and helped me wash. Finished at 10:30. Tired. Mitzi came and brought me a letter from Affiliated Fund – check for $29.64 for 3 months. Brought in clothes at 12:00. Laid around rest of afternoon. At 4:00, Sis and Samps came and mowed yard. We got hamburgers & French fries and ate in back yard. They left at 6:30. Mrs. Craghead came over a few minutes. QD & Ennis came. A storm came up and they went straight home and after rain stopped they came back. I washed my hair and Ennis rolled it for me. They left at 10:30. Mamie Appling died in Mullens – cancer. I gave QD several dishes.


22. Up early – 8:15. Ate, read paper, dressed and, at 10:30, went down to Dr. Lilly’s awhile. Doc & Mary and kids were there. Back to bank and got check cashed. On up to store for groceries and home. Laid on the porch till 3:30. Eula Wiley came about 2:00. Harry came later. They left and I went down to Dr. Vermillion’s for my med. Ethel came at 5:30. I hemmed her dress and she left at 8:15. Rained while she was here. Sis and Samps went to Roanoke this morning and did not tell me.


23. Sunday. Up at 7:00. Ate and cleaned up dishes and made up bed. Dressed and read paper. Thundered and lightning & rain. At 12:30, ate and got ready and went to the cemetery with Mrs. Craghead in their car to Mamie Appling’s burial. Back to house and it just poured rain. Sis and Samps came. Ennis and QD came. All gone by 6:45. At 7:45 Jesse came for a while. I gave him a little red pitcher of Mother’s.


24. Up at 6:30. Cloudy and cool. Ate, dressed and ironed awhile. Rested awhile and so on till finished. At 12:40, ate and rested on porch till 1:30. Watched TV till 2:30 then laid on porch till 3:00. Watched TV till 4:00. Dressed and went down to Jesse’s store and loafed till 5:05. Came home and ate supper. At 7:00 Ethel came and left at 8:15. I have one ripe tomato – yellow. Raining about 9:00. Thundering and lightning.


25. Up at 7:15. Ate, dressed, read paper and took car over to Crews to check tire that has a crack in it. Gene and Tracy hooked up sewer to Perry’s this morning. Loafed on front porch all afternoon. Boy, what a storm at 4:30. Rain just poured and thunder and lightning and hard wind with it. At 5:30, Samps and Sis came up. At 6:45, Dr. Withers came for a while. Sis and Samps left at 8:00. I heard President Kennedy give a talk on Berlin. We are in danger of war.


 26. Up at 6:30. Partly cloudy & windy. Ate and went out and pulled some weeds in flowers along the side of the house. Called Kay to come and help me. Mr. Casto came over & talked awhile. Kay came and we got all of the weeds out and got some straw & covered flower bed. At 12:00 we went up to restaurant and got hot dogs and French fries & Pepsi. Came back and ate on the porch. Rested most of the afternoon. Pulled my ripe tomato this afternoon. Laid and rested and ate supper. At 7:15, Jesse came and we went over on the Bluefield Road and got a milkshake and out on the Oakvale Road and sown Hall’s Ridge Road and home by 8:30. No rain today. He-Man’s Party over at Mercer Healing Springs this afternoon. Dr. Nuge went.


27. Had a bad night. Could not go to sleep till near 2:00AM. Got up at 12:15 and was up till after one. Dressed and loafed around – did nothing. At 2:30 went down for mail. Got card from Lulu and Doc at Hot Springs in Arkansas. Home at 3:00 after stopping at store a few minutes. Watched TV till 4:00. Laid on porch till 5:30. Went over to Casto’s a few minutes. At 6:00, Jesse’s came and took me over home with them and then we drove to Princeton, got a custard and drove back home at 8:30. Rolled my hair. Cool all day. No rain today. I must go see Dr. Hale in the morning.


28. Up at 6:30. Ate, read paper, dressed. I went down and got Sis & we went over to see Dr. Hale. Blood pressure 140 and said that I was doing fine. I am to go back in one month – four weeks. Got groceries and came home at 12:20. Ate up at Shumate’s restaurant. Stayed at Quinzetta’s until 3:30 and came home. Rested the rest of the evening. Jesse’s came and we drove over to Princeton, got a custard and home.


29. Up early. Ate. Samps went to Roanoke today. Oiled lawn mower. Called for Fern & Kay to come help me with mowing my yard trimmed and fertilized & covered with hay. Finished at 11:15. Ate dinner and went down to see Dr. Nuge a few minutes. Home at 2:00. Watched ballgame and rested rest of evening until 6:00. I called Sis and we ate supper up at restaurant. Home at 8:00. Rested on porch. No rain today. Charlie Oxley’s wife got toes cut off with lawn mower.


30. Sunday Up at 6:45. Ate, dressed and cooked beans, read paper. Called Sis and Samps did not come home from Roanoke last night. Ate dinner and rested on porch. Fred and Elva came for a while. Dr. Lilly called said that they would be up after they went down and visited Dr. Nuge a while. Mrs. Lilly not feeling well. Left at 7:00. Sid called and said that Samps got back. Rained a little (sprinkled). No one came.


31. Woke up at 4:50 AM and it was pouring the rain. Nearly one inch. Up at 7:15. Ate, read paper, and worked crossword puzzle. Dressed and, at 10:30, went down to Mrs. Lilly’s a while. At 9:30Mrs. Vermillion & Fan Shumate stopped and told me that Dr. Nuge fell off of steps to porch. I went down and got 2 phenobarbital tablets. Mrs. Vermillion gave him ½ gram instead of 1 ½ grams. Home at 12:30. Ate dinner & watched baseball. All Stars Game got rained out – score 1 to 1 tied. Rested on porch till 6:00. Went out in garden and tied up my tomatoes. Got 1 ripe yellow tomato, pulled some weeds. Went across and talked to Mrs. Craghead a while. Sis called and said that they were going on a trip and wants me to go with them next week. Paid paper boy 80 cents – up through July 29th.


August


1. Up early. Ate and dressed, read paper and rested on porch till noon. Ate and rested till 1:30. Watched TV until 4:00. Dressed and went downtown for mail. Got statement from Associated Hospital for my 17 days in hospital from coronary - $455.00. Boy! At 5:30, I dusted corn silks to keep worms out. Mr. Casto came over for my ladder for a few days. Rained some around 3:45. I went down to Sis’s at 7:15. Mr. Thompson helped Samps rob bees – lots of honey.


2. Up at 7:45. Ate. Sis called at 9:15 for me to come down. I went at 10:00. Just loafed around and watched TV & walked around and looked at flowers. Ate dinner & watched TV. At 3:00, just pouring rain, lots of wind, thunder and lightning. Home at 4:00. No one came. I called Ethel and talked a while. Raining again at 9:00. Windy.


3. Up at 7:00. Chilly all day. Ate & dressed. Wrote MaryLee and Doc & Lulu & Spec Oxley today & mailed them. Watched TV till 10:25 and went downtown to bank and paid my water bill & cashed my AEP check- $5.63. Home at 11:15. I watched TV till 12:00 then ate dinner and rested on the porch till 1:30. Watched TV and I went to sleep & rested till 3:00 on porch. Watched TV till 4:00. Then went out and checked over garden and came in and rested on porch. At 7:15, Ennis came. Eunice Oxley called me. Later Ethel came at 8:00 and left at 9:00. Sis called. Another jet plane was hijacked in El Paso Texas with 73 passengers aboard. FBI finally got man & 17 year old son wanting to go to Cuba.


4. Up at 6:45. Ate. Cold & foggy. Dressed and went down to Dr. Vermillion at 10:30. Home at 12:00. Took car over to Crews to fix my tire – right front. He had to put on a new tire and tube -$23.50. Called Fern to come and mow my yard and she came at 2:00. We cleared grass and trash in front of walk. Finished at 5:00. Ate supper. Rested on porch. Jesse’s came at 7:30 and left at 9:15. We had soft drinks. Jesse told me that next Thursday Lodema would be operated on for their new baby. Watched football game –All Star- till 12:30.


5. Up at 7:45. Cool. Ate & cleaned up. Dressed and laid on porch till 11:45. Went down for mail and on down to Ethel’s a while. Raining as I came home at 12:00. Rested on the porch till 1:30. Bill & Maxine & Vickie came at 3:00. Watched baseball game. Samps, Quinzetta and Mimi came in their new jeep. Got it this morning. We went for a ride. Ennis called for me to come down a while. QD fell down their basement steps last night at 11:00. Home at 8:20. Mrs. Lilly called for me to eat dinner with them tomorrow. Ethel came at 8:40 and left at 9:30.


6. Sunday. Did not sleep good last night. Up at 7:45. Ate. Took a bath at 9:30. Fred and Elva came for me to go down and have dinner with them but I am going to Dr. Lilly’s for dinner at 12:45. We ate at 1:15. Dr. Scott and Beth came. I came home at 2:50. Jesse’s came for me to go down on Bluestone Lake for a picnic. Sis and Samps went. We had a nice time. Home at 7:15. Was resting on porch and Alice Lee came and left at 10:00. No rain. Nice and warm.


7. Up early. Ate, dressed and rested on porch all day. No rain – first Monday since I got home from the hospital – June 5th - and 3 or 4 days each week. Bank starting new addition to bank – 1 story. Have taken down the 3 maples that Dr. Lilly and Bud Kessinger put out. Ennis, Fern & Kay came up for a little while. Lights went out at 10:10 and did not come back on till around 1:30 AM.


8. Up at 7:00. Did not sleep good last night. Dressed & went down to see Dr. Vermillion. Carl Martin and Charles Hopkins had a wreck on Princeton Road at Melrose School and tore down light pole – was why lights went off last night. Stopped at store a few minutes and home. Rested on porch rest of afternoon. Rained some this evening. Mr. and Mrs. Casto took me for a ride in his new Lincoln down to Pipestem, out True Road to Mrs. Mise’s and got blackberries, on down Tallery Mountain and back on new road. Got home at 8:10 – we left at 6:30. Nice ride.


9. Up at 6:30. Ate and rested most all day till around 2:30 when Sis and Samps stopped by. At 2:40, I went down to Sissie’s. Rained some around 5:30. Ate supper at Quinzetta’s and we drove over to Jesse’s a while. At 6:45 Jesse took Lodema to hospital to have baby in the morning. Samps & Sis came up and left at 9:00. Lillyan Lilly called me and said that Dr. not feeling so good.


10. Up at 6:30. Ate, dressed and waited till 10:30 and Sis had not called about Lodema. I called her – a baby girl- 5lb 10 ½ oz. I went down to QD’s at 12:00. Home at 1:25 and watched TV. At 2:45, Jesse and Sis stopped by and said that Lodema was doing ok but suffering a lot. Jesse will go back after 4:30. Stopped when he got in at 8:30 for a minute.


11. Up at 7:00. Ate & dressed. Cleaned up some. Called Fern to come and mow yard. She and Mitzi came at 11:00. Mitzi trimmed around fence, mopped my kitchen, down steps from hall upstairs. We got hot dogs & drinks for dinner. Mitzi swept off front porch & I mopped it then rested rest of afternoon. Jesse and Sis stopped for me to go with them to see Lodema at 1:30. I did not go, tired, and rested. They stopped as they came back and said that she was suffering a lot, No one else came. Raining. I picked a mess of beans, 3 yellow tomatoes and cooked apples and canned 1 pint.


12. Up early. Ate, dressed and ran sweeper over floors. Got really tired. At 11:00 I went down to get mail and stopped at the store. Ennis called over to hospital. Lodema is real sick & Jesse went right on over there. Raining. Sis came up to help at store. Got letter from MaryLee and card from Ethel. Home and rested most of the afternoon. Lillyan and Mary Ann came to see me at 2:15. I gave them 2 vases and 2 flower vases Dr. and Mrs. Lilly had given me long ago. I paid paperboy 80 cents today down at the store. Mrs. Hartman stopped to see me a few minutes. Jesse, Mimi & Sis & Samps stopped for me to drive over to hospital with them. Lodema better. I did not go up to see her. Home at 8:20. At 8:45 MaryLee and Delmer came and left at 11:00. Went to bed.


13. Sunday. Up at 7:00. Ate and put on beans and chicken. Jesse & kids came at 12:00 for dinner with me. Sis and Samps stopped. Sis finished getting dinner for me. We ate and were on the porch when Dick and Mrs. Lilly stopped. They took Dr. Lilly to the hospital – very sick. Jesse and Mitzi went over to see Lodema at 1:45. Sis and Samps went home at 3:30.  Mrs. Toothman came and Mr. T. came for her. Jesse stopped back by and said that Lodema was better. At 6:30 Jesse stopped and I went over to see Lodema and Dr. Lilly. Lodema sat up 1 hour late this evening. Dr. Lilly is pretty sick I think. Home at 8:20. Called Mrs. V., Fred R. and Fred Cooper.


14. Up at 6:45. Temp 52. Ate, Dressed and went down to Mrs. Lilly’s a few minutes to see how Dr. Lilly is but they have not heard. I went on down to Dr. Nuge’s a while. Guy Oxley and Doc Oxley came in to see Dr. Nuge. I went back to store a few minutes and home. Ate dinner and Sis and Mitzi went over to see Lodema. Mimi stayed with me. She was real good. Were Lillyan called and said that Dr. was feeling real bad – chest pains – and they were trying to get a special nurse for him. Donzie, Jr. came up tonight to see him so said Fred Rogers. He called me and had been over to see him and said that he was feeling better. Doc and Lulu came to see me. Sis and I are going to Princeton in the morning for Dr. Richard to fix our teeth. Cold all day. Glady called and said that Aunt Emma is in the hospital in Bluefield – kidney trouble.


15. Temp 52. Clear. Up at 6:45. Ate and read paper. Dr. Lilly not doing so good. He was put in an oxygen tent and has nurses around the clock starting last night. I went down to P.O. and got mail. Home at 11:45. At 12:00, Sis came and we went over to have Dr. Richard work on our teeth. Sis had a cleaning job – no cavities – I had 3 “Sif” put in my 2 front teeth. (This may refer to silver fillings. CKM) We went on up to hospital to see Dr. Lilly, Lodema and the baby. Dr. Lilly real sick I think. Home and I went down to tell Dr. Nuge about him. Fred Cooper came over. Home and gave Mr. Casto my geraniums on back porch. He put them in a new planter he built. Keith Thompson called about Dr. Lilly. At 8:30 Mrs. Lilly and Lillyan stopped and said that Dr. Lilly had a good nap & ate some supper and was feeling better.


16. Cool again this morning. Clear, look like fall. Ate, dressed and went down to Dr. Lilly’s and paid bills by ck. and wrote 2 personal letters for him. Home at 11:30. Clarice Bibbee was here. I got a letter from MaryLee. Dr. Lilly better early this morning. Ate dinner and rested & slept this afternoon. At 6:30, Mrs. Casto came over for a while. Fred and Elvie came in. They had been over to see Dr. Lilly at 7:00. Said that he was worse – had taken him out of oxygen tent & discharged nurses T 3:00. At 6:00 Dr. Scott called and said that Dr. is in bad shape. Mrs. Lilly went and they had put him back in the tent and had special nurses back on duty. Dick stopped at 9:30 and said that they had moved him to 3rd floor in my room - #30- and he was some better. Oh me.


17. Up at &:15. Ate & washed out slip and 2 dresses. Tired when I got done. Dressed, read paper & went downtown for mail. Got letter from Mrs. Withers to come up Saturday at our regular coffee hour. Home at 12:45. Ate and at 1:30 Jesse came for me to go with him to get Lodema and baby & bring her home. I went up to 3rd floor to see Dr. Lilly and he was feeling very good. We waited till 4:00 and Dr. Todd did not come to dress Lodema’s side & take stitches out. So we came home. I rested on porch awhile. Jesse went at 6:30 for Lodema to bring her and the baby home. Went over to Mrs. Casto’s a few minutes. Telephone ringing and I came home. Alice Lee came later. Carl & Lillyan stopped and said that Dr. doing very good. Took him out of tent but put him back pretty soon. All gone at 9:00. Thundering and lightning. Noah White was buried today in Athens Cemetery.


18. Cold this morning. Up at 7:00. Ate, dressed and went down to Quinzetta’s. Her back is hurting her. Home at 12:10, ate and laid around the rest of the day. Dr. Lilly had a bad round at noon today. Had corn out of my garden for supper – it was good. Lillyan stopped at 8:45 and said that Dr. was not doing too good.


19. Temp 56. Up at 6:45. Fern came with QD’s power mower and mowed my yard for me. At 12:00 I went downtown and took a cabbage to weigh it at store – 10 lbs. 3 ozs. – A whopper. Home and dressed & Sis came at 2:30. At 3:15 we went up to Dr. and Mrs. Withers. Had a nice visit – refreshments were cake, pie & coffee. Later we strolled over their flower garden. Had ice cream and home at 6:00. At 7:00 I went down to Vermillion’s a few minutes and home. At 9:00, Mrs. Lilly and Doc stopped to report on Dr. Lilly.


20. Sunday. Up at 7:00. Cool & cloudy. Ate, dressed. Helen Caperton called to find out how Dr. Lilly was. Read paper and took Mrs. Casto some corn and a squash. Home and rested on porch till I froze out. Came in and watched baseball & went to sleep. Helen Caperton came for a few minutes. Raining at 4:00. Ennis called at 5:30. They had been over to Jesse’s to see baby. Temp 60. Lillyan called after they got home and said that Dr. was real sick today. Called Phyllis to come home from Iowa.


21. Up early. Col & cloudy most all day. Ate, dressed & went downtown at 12:00. Home, ate and dressed. Fern and Kay took me over to see Dr. Lilly – he was very sick. At 9:00 this morning I went down to Dr. Lilly to see about some insurance premiums – it was an accident only policy. We will write ck. later. Dr. was very weak and I only stayed a few minutes. Stopped in to see Mrs. Bud Shumate who was there for an operation in the morning. When we got back, Fern took me down to see Dr. Nuge a few minutes and home. Several called during the day to ask about Dr. Lilly. I sprayed my tomatoes. It was hard on me but I did it. Mrs. Lilly stopped at 9:00 and said that Dr. Lilly was some better. Phyllis, Ken and Libby came in this afternoon. Ethel came home. Dee called her about Aunt Emma.


22. Up early. Ate, called Whitey Beckett to check my car and put on a sticker. I went down and he had to put on a tailpipe-$9.35. Home at 9:30 I called Fern & Kay to come and wash and wax my car. They came at 1:00 and did a good job. Ethel went to Pearisburg to be with Aunt Emma. Drs. say 1 kidney gone and the other one is in bad condition. Raining. James Martin, Boob’s brother, was found dead in bed this morning – stroke. Dr. Uriah went over to see Dr. Lilly this afternoon. Margaret and Mrs. Vermillion went along and Margaret called me when they got home. Dr. and Mrs. Bibbee came to see me at 8:30. Ethel came and said that Aunt Emma no better. At 10:00 Lillyan stopped and said that Drs. told Mrs. Lilly that they had done all that they could for Dr. that could be done. Only a matter of time.


23. Up at 6:45. Ate, Cool. Lillyan called and said that Dr. had a fair night and for me to come down. I went to see Eula J. Martin & Boob – they were gone. I went on down to dry cleaners to talk about rent owed to Dr. Lilly. Gave Lillyan the report on the rent, sent Gary Cooper a receipt and on down to see Sis. Her back Is some better. I ate dinner with them. At 2:00, I went down to see Dr. Vermillion awhile and home at 3:00. Watched programs & visited Mrs. Casto a few minutes. Home and QD and Ennis came at 6:30. Later Fred and Elva came and left at 8:30 and QD’s at 9:15. Mrs. Lilly, Ken and Phyllis & Libby stopped by at 9:30 and said that Dr. is about the same. I called Mrs. Vermillion & Fred Rogers and told them. I did not rest till after midnight.


24. Up at 7:30. Rained during the night – a lot. Ate, read paper and called Lillyan. She said that Dr. had a good night and ate some breakfast. Cleared up some and I washed. I took it slow and easy and hung clothes outside. Rested till 4:45. Defrosted refrigerator. It took me until 6:30. Tired – worst job that I have done. Raining at 5:30 and again at 8:30. Mrs. Lilly & Lillyan stopped and said Dr. Lilly was feeling some better tonight. Ray Cheatwood called about Dr. Lilly.


25. Up at 7:30. Raining. Ate & read paper. Dressed and drove my car over to Princeton to see Dr. Hale and he was out of town. I went up and sat with Dr. Lilly till Dr. Scott came at 11:30. Dr. not so good. He didn’t have anything to say much. Home at 12:35. Rested till 2:00. Then I went down to see Dr. Vermillion and gave him a report on Dr. Donzie. Home at 3:00. Watched TV till 4:00 and then rested on porch. Raining hard. Ate supper and at 6:30 QD, Ennis and Kay came. Charlotte Scott called about Dr. Lilly. And Helen Caperton. Mrs. Lilly stopped at 8:40 and said that Dr. might be a little bit better if any – nothing to say, just laying there with his eyes closed.


26. Up at 7:00. Ate. Lillyan called and said that Dr. had a good night and was some better. I ironed all of my clothes up and dressed and went down for mail & gro. Home at 12:00. Ate & rested on the porch till 1:30. Watched ballgame till3:30. I went down to see Sis awhile and she is better. We went up to restaurant for supper and on over to Jesse’s awhile – baby asleep. Raining. Home at 7:00. Rested on porch. Mrs. Lilly stopped at 8:50 and said that Dr. is feeling better she thought. At least, she was more cheerful. I paid the paper boy 80 cents and Princeton Times- 3 days- 15 cents.


27. Sunday. Up at 7:00. Ate. Foggy & cool. Clear. Sun out. At 9:30 I dressed and went down to Ethel’s to see Aunt Emma a few minutes. Ethel went to church. Home at 10:45. Read paper and Sis and Samps stopped for me to come down and have dinner with them. Home at 5:00. Mabel called Mrs. Vermillion and Frances Scyphers about Dr. Lilly. They say he is worse. Called Ann at house and he is. At 5:30 Lillyan and Carl stopped and said that Dr. is real bad and may not last till morning. I called Fred, Addie & Frances & Pearl. Dr. Bibbee called QD to come and see about me. Later Ken & Phyllis came and said that Dr. some better and Lillyan called and said the Mrs. Lilly came home and Dr. was better. I washed my hair and Ennis set it.


28. I had a bad night. Could not sleep till after 2:00. I finally got up and saw a man up at Shumate’s filling station and took a toddy and went back to bed. Up at 7:15. At 8:00, I talked to Lillyan and aid that Dr. no better. At 11:00 Helen Caperton called and at 12:30 I called down to house and Lillyan said that Scott had called for them to come on over as things look bad. I ate and went down to see Dr. Nuge a few minutes and home at 3:00. Watched TV till four and ate. Fern came and mowed the yard, Ennis, Fern and Kay sat with me for a while. At 8:45 Mrs. Lilly, Ken and Phyllis stopped and said they thought that Dr. was some better. I made calls to all standing by to get my news bulletin.


29.Up at 7:10. Ate and read paper & called Lillyan & she said that Dr. had a very good night and asked for a boiled egg for breakfast. Just rested all day. Lillyan stopped in and said that Dr. better maybe.


30. I have to go to Princeton to have Dick work on my teeth. Up at 6:00. Ate, dressed and left for Princeton at 7:35. Dr. Richard filled 1 tooth and cleaned them. I went up and saw Dr. Hale. He said I was doing fine. I got 3 boxes of candy & took to the nurses on the third floor at hospital. I saw Dr. Lilly for a few minutes. He is not so good – out of tent, asleep and did not know that I was there. Ann left today. Home at 12:30. I went down to tell Mrs. Lilly dr. was better and sleeping and on down to see Dr. Vermillion. Home at 1:30 and rested rest of afternoon. Sis and Samps came up and picked 2 rows of beans. Mrs. Lilly stopped and said that Dr. was feeling better.


31. Up early. Ate and read paper. Rained some. Helped at store. Lillyan and Carl left today. Cooked beans. Mrs. Lilly stopped Dr. not so good. Rained some.

1. Dr. not so well. Mrs. Lilly stopped going to Princeton at 9:30. I read paper and went down and helped at the store. Lodema was there with the baby. Home at 1:00. Rested rest of afternoon. At 4:30 I went down to Dr. Lilly’s and wrote a check & letter to S.R. Duke & sent to the Internal Revenue for Dr. Home at 6:30. At 7:30, Charlotte and Levi Scott came. Left at 8:40. At 9:25, Mrs. Lilly stopped and said that Dr. is weak and talked some. To bed at 11:00. Paid paper boy – Princeton Times – 35 cents.


2. Up at 7:30. Ate. Cleaned up porch and went down to see Aunt Emma. Dee came while I was there. Home at 11:30. Dr. Lilly had a very good night & feeling ok this morning. Ate dinner and watched baseball game. At 4:30 Sis and Samps & Ennis came and brought my mattress home and got Sissy’s. Rested on porch till 9:00, Mrs. Lilly and Doc stopped and said that Dr. had a very good day and night. Ray Cheatwood Jr. wife had a wreck up on the Princeton Road.


3. Sunday Up at 7:30. Ate and dressed and just read papers and laid around all day, Called Charlie Lane and he said that my fence was no good. Boy I got mad. Watched baseball games and slept. Cool. Temp 83. After supper I walked down to Mrs. Toothman’s a few minutes & home. Mrs. Lilly called and said that Dr. was better some. Several called about Dr. Lilly. Casto’s got home at 10:00.


4. Up at 7:00. Ate, Read papers. Rained at 10:30. I went down to Dr. Vermillion’s and ordered 300 miltrate tablets and on down to Quinzetta’s. Got a surprise – she had a birthday dinner for me at 4:00. QD, Ennis and Kay came down at 3:30. I came back and stopped and saw Doc Jennings. He had a wreck on his tractor – it turned over on him over at Frank Parker’s Saturday afternoon. Blue leg and in bad shape. Home at 7:45 and went over to Mrs. Casto’s for a few minutes. Mrs. Lilly did not go over to see Dr. Lilly tonight. He seems some better maybe. The first night that she has n=missed since he went to hospital.


5. Up early. Did not sleep till after 2AM – just could not go to sleep. I got up and took some whiskey and went back to bed. Partly cloudy. Dr. Lilly better. Ennis called and I went to Princeton and on up to see Dr. Lilly (Fern & I) a minute and home. At 10:45 I went down and helped at the store. Lodema was there. Home at 1:00. I went to basement & washed my clothes. Took it easy, hung them outside but at 5:10 I had to bring them in- raining. Sis and Samps came. They got their doghouse, fence and dog. No one came. 


6. Up at 6:50. Ate and sprinkled clothes & took bedspread out and put it on line to finish drying. At 10:00, Fern came and mowed my yard. I did not go downtown today. Ate dinner at 1:00. Started ironing- rested awhile – then ironed---then rested. At 4:00 I went out on porch & Virginia and Libby White came for 1 hour. Mrs. Lilly stopped and said that Dr. was still doing fine and out of tent for meals. At 5:00 I went back & finished ironing. Ate supper and at 6:30 Ethel came and got some tomatoes – left at 7:15. I went over to Mrs. Casto’s a few minutes. Helen and Lida Caperton came and we talked for a while. They left and I watched TV. No rain today.


7. Up at 7:00. Ate, read paper and cleaned birdbath and put in new water. At 10:30 Jesse came for me to come down and help during noon. Lodema did not come over yesterday or today. They had it tough yesterday, just Samps, Jesse and Mitzi. I did not go down. Home at 12:45 and rested & read news on porch till 1:30. I watched TV. Mrs. Lilly called and said Dr. Is doing fine and for me to come down and pay bills for him. Got corn and boiled it for supper and took Mrs. Casto over some. At 5:45 I took bottles down to Mrs. Toothman’s and visited a while. Home and rested on porch till 8:00. No one came. Watered flowers. Clear and warm all day. I gave Jesse this morning some tomatoes – yellow and red.


8. Up early, Ate, read papers and dressed and watched TV till 11:00. I went downtown to help in store at noon. Home at 1:00. Rested and watched my programs. I went down to Dr. Lilly’s at 10:00 & picked cantaloupes for Mrs. Lilly & fixed up some of Dr.’s business for him. Ran sweeper & cleaned some. Jesse took Lodema to Dr. – not doing so good. No one came today. No rain today.


9. Up at 7:00. Ate and read paper. Dressed and at 11:45 went down to P.O., got mail and back to store. Home at 2:00. I went and got Sis and we went over to see Lodema. She is real sick. Dr. says for her to stay in bed. Home at 3:00. Watched baseball game & rested on porch. Dressed and went up to restaurant for supper. Samps went to Roanoke to see Ruth. Watched Miss America Contest and Miss NC was crowned, Paid paperboy at store. Walters boy mowed my yard today. No rain.


10. Sunday. Up at 8:15. Ate and called Sis at 9:15. I went down and we went over to see Aunt Pearl & Uncle Rass awhile and on over to Jesse’s. Lodema had a bad night and was better this morning. We brought Aunt Pearl home to Sis’s and showed her around and took her back home. I came home and took a nap. A boy drowned in New River at Crump’s Bottom. Rescue Squad from Princeton, Seaver ambulance and Giles Co. Squad came to help find him. No rain.


11. Up at 7:00. Ate, read paper and dressed and went out to see Arthur Martin, He was sitting on the porch – first time in 7 weeks to be out of bed. On down to see Aunt Emma & Ethel a while. Back to store and helped at noon. Lodema feeling some better. Home at 1:00. Rested on porch till 1:30. Watched programs and went to sleep. At 2:00 Ora Peters came and let at 3:00. I watched TV till 4:00. I went to garden and got some corn for supper. Took Mrs. Casto a few ears of corn. Home and picked her a mess of beans & 3 tomatoes- Mrs. Vermillion’s kind. Read Sunset News & Princeton Times – both put on my porch at 5:00. At 5:30 I ate supper. Later Mae Martin came for a few minutes. No one else came. Dr. Lilly not so well today – weak. No rain. Hurricane Carla hit Texas & Louisiana today – lots of damage.


12. Up at 7:00. Ate & dressed and at 9:30 went down to Mrs. Lilly’s to take care of some business for Dr. Lilly. I went on down to see Dr. Nuge a few minutes. Dr. Lilly not too good today. At 5:00 this morning he had some pain in his chest. Back to store and helped at noon. Home at 1:00. Just rested all afternoon... Hot. 85. No breeze today. Mrs. Lilly stopped at 8:40 and said that Dr. may be a little better tonight – very sick all day.


13. Up at 6:50. Ate and went out and picked beans and tomatoes. I watered my flowers and washed off car. Dressed and ready to go down & help at the store at noon. Dr. Lilly seems to be better today. Home at 1:00. Watched TV & rested most of the afternoon. Hot, oh boy, 86!


14. Up early. Dr. Lilly had a lot of pain early this morning. Very bad. Dr. Frank spent the night in the hospital, he was so bad. Helped at the store at noon. Lodema was over to help. A good rain at 5:45 – a hard one. QD stopped to get Ennis over at Janice’s and we talked a while. I went to see Mrs. Withers a few minutes and took her some tomatoes & peppers. Home at 5:15. She was glad to see me. Garnet Gautier came up after the big rain tonight and left at 9:00. Mrs. Lilly stopped by and said that Dr. was some better.


15. Up at 7:00. Ate and dressed, read papers. I went down and paid up Dr. Lilly’s bills and went down to see Dr. Vermillion a while. I went back to store and helped at noon. Lodema was there. Oh, what a crowd of kids dancing and having a time. Home at 1:00. Picked rest of ripe tomatoes and at 4:30 took them down to store for Lodema to can – she wanted them. Home and ate supper. Ethel came and I painted her throat and gave her some tomatoes and peppers. She left at 7:30. No one else came. Cold today. Temp 50 at 8:30.


16. Up at 5:45. Turned on my furnace. Temp 36. A frost on roof of filling station – white. I went back to bed and got up at 7:30. Ate, dressed & went down to Dr. Vermillion’s for my medicine that he ordered for me – 300 tablets. Home at 12:30. Dr. Lilly better. I watched ballgame till 5:00. They found Rev. Keaton and he had been missing since Aug. 11. Dr. Lilly much better, Mrs. Lilly says. No one came tonight. Temp 48 at 9:30.


17. Sunday. Up at 5:30. Turned up heat. Temp was 40. Went back to bed and up at 8:20. Ate, read paper, dressed and went out to the farm – no one there- I went down to see if Charlie had started on his part of the fence. He had not. Troy came and we talked a while. Home, ate dinner And watched TV – football game. Cold all day. No one came -only Beulah Crawford. I called about Dr. Lilly. Mrs. Lilly said he is better – out of tent for several hours and most of the night. Talked to Mrs. Vermillion and Fred Rogers. Temp 50 at 8:00.


18. Up early, ate and went out in garden & walked around awhile. I cut some weeds & cut up corn till 10:30. Came in and dressed and went downtown and helped at   noon. Home at 1:00. At 1:30 Mrs. Casto brought me over some corn and lima beans. I dressed and went over to see Dr. Lilly. He had set up in chair for 30 minutes and had just gotten in bed. Had a nice visit with him. He was fine. Home and went down to tell Dr. Vermillion about him. Home at 5:00. I called Fred Rogers, Charlotte Scott & Harry Crawford. Paid the paperboy 70 cents for Princeton Times thru last Friday- 15th of Sept. Dr. Vermillion gave me some cold serum. I gave him his shot also.


19. Up at 8:00. Raining some. Temp 56. Ate, read paper. At 10:55 Ethel came for me to paint her throat. She had coughed all night and thought it would help. Mrs. Lily said that at 11:00 the nurse called for her to come - Dr. asked her to. He had another spell, Scott was also called. Mrs. Lilly got back at 12:00 or 1:00. He is better this morning. I went to store and helped at 12:00. I was late because Ethel stayed till 12:00. Home at 1:15. Watched TV. Took spots out of my raincoat. Dr. Lilly fine this afternoon.


20. Up at 8:00. Ate and cut down flowers out in the garden till 10:00. In and watched TV till10:30. Dressed and went down to store to help at noon. A very nice day. I watched TV at 1:30 till 2:30 and went out and picked a pan of tomatoes and cut some more weeds. Boys came at 6:30 and mowed my yard. No one came.


21. Up at 8:00. Ate and raked up grass from yard. Came in at 10:00, dressed and watched TV till 11:15. I went down to store to help at noon. Home at 1:00 and read the paper till 1:30. I watched TV till 2:30. I went out and forked out some of my potatoes. Came in and rested from 3:00 till 4:00. I went back and finished digging potatoes. I got a wheelbarrow full. Came in and got supper & ate at 5:30. At 6:00 Mrs. Lilly called and said that Dr. Lilly had gotten out of bed at 12:00 midnight last night while the nurse was getting a bite to eat. He walked around and out of the door and called for her. He was not so good today – weak and lifeless. I went down to Dr. Nuge at 7:00 a few minutes.


22. Up at 7:00. Ate, read paper and dressed. At 11:15 I went down to help at store at noon. Home at 1:00. Watched my programs and at 4:00 went out and got my potatoes up in a basket and on back porch. Rested awhile on the front porch. Ate super and called Mrs. Lilly. She said Dr. had another mild attack at 11:00 this morning. At 6:30 I went down to Quinzetta’s to party for Samps – his birthday. Jesses, QD & Ennis came. Had 3 kinds of pie, ice cream, cake and coffee. Had a nice time. Home at 9:30.


23. Up at 8:15. Ate. A fine day. Read paper, dressed and went down to the P.O. and stopped at the store a few minutes. Home, ate and went to the college to see football game at 2:00. West Virginia Tech – we won 14 to 0. Home at 4:45. A large crowd was there – 3500. Sis called at 5:00 and we drove out to Ferrell’s for supper and stopped in Princeton on the way back. Home at 8:00. Mrs. Lilly stopped at 8:15.


24. Sunday. Up at 8:30. Ate. Picked a mess of beans and was stringing them when Sis called for me to get cold medicine from Dr. Nuge & bring down to Samps. I did and didn’t get home till 3:30. Doc Lilly stopped and said the Dr. Lilly was not too well. Doc and Lula Meador stopped awhile. All gone by 5:00.


25. Up early. Ate. Samps still sick and not able to come to store. I washed underwear, blouse and 3 bedspreads and went to store to help. Lodema was there to help. Home at 1:15. Brought in all clothes but bedspreads. Watched TV till 2:00.I went to basement, emptied washer and mopped floor. Watched TV from 3 till 4 then brought in spreads and folded them. After supper I took bottles down to Mrs. Toothman. Home then during lightning. At 7:10, Garnet came and left at 8:45. Rained hard from 7:30to 8:15. Mary Web paid me $15 for Ins. Co. at Jesse’s store.


26. Temp 52. Chilly and partly cloudy. Ate, read paper and went out in garden and cut down flowers and weeds along the yard fence till 10:00. Bathed and dressed to go to the store to help. Home and worked getting weeds and flowers cut down out in upper part of my garden.


27. Up early. Temp 48. Clear & cool. I went out in garden and worked cutting down corn and pulling weeds. Dressed and went down to see Dr. Vermillion – he was asleep. I paid Mrs. Vermillion $15.00 that Clinton Webb paid me on ins. Helped at store. Home and worked on weeds again. Mrs. Casto brought me over a can of homemade soup that she had made for supper. Bluefield paper boy came and I paid him $1.20 through Sept. 30.


28. Up early. Cool – 48- & clear. Some folks say that we had frost this morning. Ate and dressed, read paper. I went down to Dr. Lilly’s and fixed up some business for Dr. Lilly. He is better today. Back to store and helped at noon. Home at 12:55. Cleaned porch and watched TV from 1:30 till 2:30. Worked in garden till 3:00. Came in, laid down and rested and watched my programs till 4:00. Went back to garden and cut some more weeds till 5:00.  In and ate supper and went down to the Toothman’s and invited them to have dinner with me at the Mountain Lion Restaurant. Home. Chilly tonight. No one came. Washed my hair.


29. Up early. Worked some in garden. In & dressed and read papers and went to Princeton to see Dr. Hale for a check -up. I was doing fine. Blood pressure 148 OK. I went up to see Dr. Donzie and he was asleep. Home and helped at store at noon. Home and rested till 2:30 & went out to the garden and mowed grass down my side of Perry’s fence. I got in my sunflowers and took seeds out of some of the heads. Cool and dry. Dr. Lilly still OK. Sam Holdren operated on in Bluefield – ½ of intestines taken out and were not cancerous, they say.


30. Up early. Ate, dressed, and went down to bank for some cash as Sis and I are going to Bluefield shopping around. Cool early. Hot in Bluefield. We got home at 4:00 and rested on porch. Ethel came for a while. Glen White stopped and paid me $10 on his account with Dr. Vermillion. At 6:30, I took it down to Dr. & visited with him till 7:45. Home. Cool. No one came. Feeling fine.


October


1. Sunday. Up at 7:20. Ate. Temp 52. Cooked a pot of green beans – last mess. Dressed. At 12:10, Dr. and Mrs. Toothman and I went up to restaurant for dinner. They were my guests. A nice dinner. Luther, Lottie, Bill & Lizzie and another woman came in for dinner. Home at 1:30 and watched football game till 4:00. I took a bowl of beans and went down to Sissie’s for supper – a turkey supper. Home at 7:30. A fine day. No rain. Temp 73.


2. Up at 7:00. Ate & went out in garden & worked untied my tomatoes from stakes. Took up my stakes and out of the garden. At 9:30, Margaret Baxter came and visited for a while. I came in, rested a while and dressed and went down to store to help during noon. Back home and rested till 2:30. Went out to the garden and cut more weeds and picked up some apples and cooked them. Dr. Lilly still doing fine. No one came.


3. Up at 7:40. Raining. Dr. Nuge had some pain last night in his chest. Miss Anderson was there – not too bad. Ate and read paper. Boyd Phillips came in and paid his fire ins. - $30. I dressed and took it down to Dr. Nuge. Just pouring rain all day. I helped at store and home at 1:10. I watched TV and took a nap. At 4:30, I went down in basement and washed 1 par of my curtains and hung them here in the living room over the radiator and ironed them. Put them up and they look very good, Fried me a big steak for supper. Ate and put my car under Perry’s shed out of rain. Went over to see Mrs. Casto for a few minutes. Mrs. Lilly said that they let 2 nurses go today. Dr. is on his own from 3 PM till 7AM.


4. Up early. Ate. A frost this morning. Washed and ironed another pair of curtains. Dressed and went downtown at 11:30 to get some Clorox to do my curtains. Watched World Series – First game - NY Yankees 2, Cincinnati 0. I went to sleep and missed the last 3 innings. At 4:00, I went down in basement and washed 1 more pair of curtains & put them up. Cool all day. After supper I took bottles down to Toothman’s & home & brought in my peppers and tomatoes. It is cold and will frost. Dr. Lilly is fine.


5. Up at 5:30. Temp 30. Frost. Cold. Turned up heat and went back to bed and got up at 8:20. Read paper and Pat Twohig came in a few minutes. Dressed and went down to the store to help at noon. Home at 12:45. Watched World Series. Cincinnati won over Yankees 6-2. Got a card from MaryLee. She is in Wisconsin visiting Rueben and Betty. Dr. Lilly doing very well.


6. Up at 7:30. Ate, read paper. A fine day. Mr. Casto brought me over a beautiful bunch of fall flowers – a mixture. I took Mae Martin over a flower pot of marigolds for her party tonight – a shower – that Maude Martin is giving for her. I helped at store at noon and home & just laid around, I didn’t do a darn thing. Slept some and went over to Mae’s to the shower. Rather late but I could not be a crowd long. Jesse paid me $20on plow at store today.


7. Up at 8:00. A fine day. Cleaned house and front porch. Dressed and was going to the College to see football game (Fairmont 19, Concord 6) but at 1:00 Mrs. Karnes, Dr. Lilly’s nurse called saying that Dr. Lilly wanted me to come over to see him, I took Mrs. Lilly at 1:35 we went to see Dr. He was fine and talked up a storm. They had taken him for a stroll in wheelchair out and down the street. I got home at 4:00. I went down to tell Dr. Uriah about Dr. Lilly. Stopped at store and took Samps home and ate supper. Home at 8:30.


8. Sunday. Up at 8:30. Ate, dressed and read paper. At 10:30, went down to see Aunt Emma and Ethel & Eva a while. Home at 11:30 and ate dinner. Watched baseball – World Series - (Yanks 7-0 Cincinnati). No one came. My birdbath top was turned over & 2 bird tails were broken off. Don’t see how it was done early this morning, so I guess it was done sometime yesterday or last night.


9. Up at 7:00. Ate, read paper and dressed. I went down to Mrs. Lilly and paid the water bill & looked up her tax tickets. We will pay them tomorrow. Helped at store and home. Went out on back porch and birds had got nearly all of my sweet seed corn. I saw a small boy behind Perry’s house and he seemed scared. He tried to get over fence into my garden. I hollered and he ran like a squirrel. In a few minutes 2 sheriff cars came out cemetery road and he ran with the cop after him. Shot 3 times to scare him and finally caught him. He was a boy from the training school and had stolen bicycles and gun and shells from up at Fred Cheatwood’s.


10. A fine day. Up at 8:30. Read the paper & went downtown for mail &helped at store. Got my letter from county court to help in election as commissioner. Home and worked in garden a while. Samps went home at 1:00. Said that he was sick.


11. Up early – 7:00. Ate and went to the basement and washed clothes. Put them on line. I did not go down to help at store. I thought Samps was there but he was not able to come out. I worked in garden a while and watched programs. I went down to see Samps at 6:00 and they were not there. Home and they stopped and I went to Princeton with them to see Dr. Hale. Samps saw him and I went up to see Dr. Lilly a few minutes. Home and Jesse came to see about Samps.


12. Up at 7:00. Ate. Read paper & ironed up all of my clothes. Glen and Carl Martin mowed off my lot below the garden. I helped at store at noon & home & dressed. I went with Dr. Nuge and Margaret to see Dr. Lilly. He was tickled pink to see Dr. Nuge. Home and went down to see Ethel. She was sick from a shot. I went on down to see Samps at 6:30. Stopped to see Sam Holdren. He is home and feeling fine & out driving car. Went down to college and home at 7:30.


13. Up at 7:00. Ate, read the paper, dressed and went down and got Samps and took him over to see Dr. Hale. Dr. put him in hospital & before he got in bed, Dr. Holroyd and nurse was there to take EKG. I went downtown and got him a PJ set and took it back to him. Home at 11:45. Helped at store and home. Worked some and watched my TV shows. I watched for Sis. She had bus duty and was late. I finally got her stopped and told her Samps was in hospital. I went home with her and at 6:30, we went to Princeton. I spent the night with her. Visited with Dr. Lilly a while. He is fine. Lillyan and Carl came today.


14. We got up at 7:00. I came home. Raining. I stopped at Alice Lee’s and got Sis’s coat and took it to her. Home at 1:00. Watched ball game and slept a lot. I went with Sis to see Samps at 6:30. She ate supper with me – fried chicken, mashed potatoes, slaw and hot biscuits. Samps better, Mary Ann and Gene came to see Dr. Lilly. Snowed on us over and back. First snow today.


15. Sunday. Temp 30. Ice. Up down at Sis’s. Temp low. Home at 9:00. Turned on heat. Laid down and slept all morning and part of afternoon. Cold and cloudy. I went to Princeton to see Samps with Sis at 6:30’ Samps is better. Dr. Lilly is fine. Home at 8:30. I stayed at home. Sis stayed alone.


16. Up at 7:00. Ate, read paper & dressed. I went down to Mrs. Lilly’s and paid bills. On down to see Dr. Uriah a while. Back to store and helped at noon. Home at 12:45. Watched TV programs and worked in garden from 2 till 3. Watched my programs and went to sleep for 40 minutes. I went back to garden and pulled weeds, took up leaves at garden gate. Called Sis and Samps answered. I went down and had supper with them. Jesse’s all came. I got home at 9:30. Cool & clear. May frost. A fine day – not too cold.


17. Up at 7:00. Turned on heat and warmed house up. A big frost. Clear. A fine day. Warm. Ate breakfast & cleaned out refrigerator on back porch & took tools to basement & washed window and put up plastic curtain. Dressed and went down to help at store at noon and home at 1:10. Meredith Via stopped and said that the girls wanted me to call drug store. I did and Eula said for me to come down at 2:30 for a visit and refreshments for Mrs. Jennings – 80th birthday today. Had a nice time and home at 4:00. Cleaned, mopped and scrubbed back porch. Hope to get it painted if I get time. Ate supper and burned trash. Tried to burn the brush pile but it wouldn’t burn. Called Mrs. Lilly and she says that Dr. will be home tomorrow. Bought hospital bed today. I called Mrs. V., Fred R. and Levi Scott.


18. Up at 8:00. Ate, cleaned up kitchen. Mrs. Lilly called for me to take her to Princeton to hospital. Dr. Lilly coming home today. We stopped at Leggetts a minute and home at 11:15. Dr. Lilly came home by ambulance at 11:45. I helped at store, home and rested a while. At 3:00 I went down to Dr. Lilly’s and stayed until Dick came in. Nurse Karnes left at 3:30. Home and ate and went down to Quinzetta’s and back to stay with Mrs. Lilly until Dick came in from Princeton. Dr. slept most of the time. Home at 8:30. A fine day.


19. Up at 7:00. Ate & cleaned up house. Swept front porch and went downtown and got 1 quart of porch paint from Eula. Helped at store, mopped part of the kitchen and painted the back steps. Ennis and Fern came over a few minutes. At 3:15 I went down to see Dr. Lilly and home at 5:00. He is fine and had a good night. Raining some and, after the wind laid, a beautiful rainbow in the east. I went back down to Dr. Lilly’s at 7:00. Dick is going out for a while. Temp 34 and snowing in Bluefield at 11:10 news. 60 tonight at 6:00. 31 in Buefield at 11:00 with ½ inch of snow.


20. At 6:30 Gene Conner was knocking on my door and said that a big limb had fallen on light wire out of upper maple. Lights went off at 3:50 this morning – about 6-8, maybe 10 inches of snow. Trees all over town are broken all over town. Dr. Lilly’s are a sight to see. Temp 34 all day. I did not go downtown today. Jesse came and said that they would get along ok at store. Rained some & sleeted in afternoon around 5:00.


21. Up at 7:00. Snow nearly all gone. Temp 41. Warmed up during night. Raining a little in early morning. Car hard to start. Stopped in and saw Perry & Mae a few minutes. On down to see Dr. Lilly. Thomas paid me $56.00 for Dr. Lilly this morning. Dr. is fine. His yard is covered with limbs from snowstorm. On down to see Dr. Vermillion a few minutes and back to the store and got groceries and home. Sis called for me to bring Alice Lee down to hem and take up her dresses. At pie, cake and coffee and home at 4:00. Watched football. At 7:40, Ethel came for a while and left at 8:30. Cloudy all day. Temp 46. Nurse Karnes left Dr. Lilly’s today.


22. Sunday. Up at 8:00. Sun out. Ate, cleaned up, dressed and went over to farm. Upper maple broke all over from snowstorm Thursday night.one big limb on light wire. Home at 11:00. Read paper and watched football game. No one called or came all afternoon. A fine day warming up a lot.


23. Up at 7:00. A big frost. Ate & went out and took up all of my leaves around car & some in yard close to fence & worked in garden. Took out tomato vines, bean vines and other junk. I mowed part of back yard after I got leaves up. At 12:00 I went down and shocked up some hay. I did not go down to the store. I was out all day just messing around and getting things done up for winter. A nice warm day. Ennis came over and got a bag of nice tomatoes – still good in the garden. I brought in peppers and tomatoes, nice ones. I called and went down to see Dr. Lilly at 6:15. He was fine and home by 8:30.


24. Up at 7:00. A big frost. Ate and went and painted porch and steps of back porch. I did not go downtown to help at store as I was too busy. I cleaned out basement windows on Perry’s side and painted all woodwork. Finished at 6:00. I have to do yet to paint the handrail down back steps. Mrs. Fred Rogers went out hunting alone and shot and killed a gray fox – so Mae Martin told me.


25. Up early. Ate. A fine morning. Went out and shocked some hay... In and dressed and went down to the store and helped during noon hour. Home and watched my programs. I went out and shocked hay till 3:00. In and watched program till 4:00. I went out and took leaves out of driveway from fence. Fern and Linda Perry came a few minutes. Put leaves out in pen. In and fixed supper, ate and took milk bottles down to Dr. Toothman. Home at 6:30 and watched TV. No one came. Raining at 6:30. Colder.


26. Up at 6:00. Turned on heat & went back to bed till 7:00. Temp 34. Windy all day. Mrs. Lilly called for me to come down at 1:00 and stay with Dr. while she and Dick went to Bluefield shopping. Helped at store and went down to Dr. Lilly’s. Harry Crawford & Mrs. Crawford came and stayed about 45 minutes. Dick & Mrs. Lilly came in at 3:15. Home at 3:45. Cold. Dr. Lilly is fine. Still windy. No one came. Cole. Temp 30 at bedtime.


27. Up at 7:00. Big frost. Temp 26. Clear and sun out. Read paper and started moving furniture out of living room. Cleaned and waxed part of it. At 10:30 Roy and Margaret Meador from Hinton stopped in a few minutes on way to Bluefield shopping. I dressed and went down to help at store at noon. Home at 1:00. I finished cleaning floor and waxed it and dusted rugs. I changed everything to a new place. Ate supper and dressed. I went over to Crews station for car. He put in anti-freeze and 5 gallons of gas - $7.00. No one came. No one called. Cold again tonight.


28. Concord Homecoming game today. A frost this morning. Up at 7:00. Ate, read paper burnt trash. I swept leaves off of front porch & steps and walk. Mrs. Vermillion called. Later Mrs. Lilly called for me to come down and watch parade with them I did and it was a nice parade. Home at 12:00. Ate and dressed and went down to football game – Concord 26 vs. Shepherd State 7. A big crowd. I went in at press box and sat with Dr. and Margaret – did not have to climb the hill. Very nice day – not too cold. Not much wind. Home at 5:00. Called Ethel at 6:00 and Sis later. Temp 52 at 6:30. At 9:00 Mrs. Rogers called. I was walking and could not lay down. They came and stayed with me until 10:30


29. Sunday up at 8:00. Ate. Warmer. Sun out. Dressed and read paper. Swept porch & steps and walk. Leaves are really coming down. No one came. Rested. Sis called at 2:45 for me to go to Dr. Nuge and get 200 penicillin and 100 green tablets. I did and got home at 8:00. Ate supper with them. Samps has a cold. No one came today. Temp 74 today and hot. A fine day.


30. Up at 7:15. Ate, dressed and went to Princeton Farm Bureau and picked up $11.98. Sold my stock. On up to dime store. Got a gift for shower for Mae Dobbins. Home and picked up Dr. Withers at Oakvale Road and brought him to Basil Shumate’s. Dr. Scott came at 11:15 and left at 11:40. I went down and helped at the store and home at 12:50. I went out and took up leaves till 1:30. In and watched TV. Out at 2:00 and worked taking up leaves till 3:000. In for 1 hour and watched programs and went to sleep. Out at 4:00 and took up leaves around shrubs in front yard and in back. Wind high and sprinkling rain some. Mr. Casto called for me to come over and look at the new shrubs he got yesterday and put out tonight. I planted my potato onions today. Temp 72 today.


31. Up early. Painted window sill in small room and on outside and took in all chairs & jugs on front porch. Dressed and went down to see Aunt Emma and Ethel a while. Back to store and helps at noon. Home and tied up my 4 shrubs in front yard. I wrapped binder wire around them and got leaves in front and back yard. Watched my TV programs. Ate supper and dressed and gave out candy to kids – about 30 of them. At 7:00 I went down to the Halloween Party – a good crowd there. Glen Martin was taken in by police. Sis and Samps came up for it. Sprinkled rain some. Home at 8:45. Temp 62 at 6:00.


November


1. Up at 7:00. Ate. Cloudy and misting rain. Read paper. Mrs. Lilly called to see how I was feeling. I dressed & went down at 10:30 to see Dr. Lilly. He is doing very good. I helped at store at noon. Home at 1:15. Glen Martin, Harry & Bill Hazelwood were taken to jail last night by cop. Someone threw a rock through town hall window last night and it went through the windshield of the fire truck. At 4:00 I went down to Dr. Vermillion’s a while and on down to Sis’s. Home. Stopped on my way back at Ethel’s with cough syrup. Home at 8:30. Cool but cloudy all day & rained a little off and on.


2. Up early and ate. I went out and took up some of my leaves and in a 10:00. Dressed and took some books over for Perry Martin to read. Mae told me that Adam had a fight with cop yesterday afternoon in city hall while they were trying Glen. He was taken to jail by Martin cop and when I came back to car, Ennis, Jesse and Samps were all hunting for me. They had called Mrs. Vermillion, Mrs. Lilly and Ethel. They were scared pink. I helped at store and home at 1:15. Watched programs & went out at 2:00. Took up more leaves till 3:00. Watched programs. I went out and mowed grass where I had took up leaves. QD stopped a few minutes at 4:15. Ate and I went out and worked some more. Tom Oxley paid me balance of $3.00 for Dr. Lilly. Temp 74 today. I got AE Power Co. today – dividend.


3. Up at 6:40. Ate, read paper. Cloudy and windy but warm. Temp 70 at 10:00. Sun out. Nice day. Took up more leaves. Dressed and at 11:00 went down to Dr. Lilly’s and gave him the $3 that Tom Oxley paid to me yesterday - squared up his bill. Back to store and helped at noon. Home at 1:00. Jesse paid me $20.00 on the plow. Worked in yard most of afternoon. I took out flowers & weeds and leaves alongside of Uncle Hade’s fence. At 5:00 Ennis called for me to come down later. Garnet called and said that she was coming up at 7:30. At 10:00 Judy and Joe came. All gone at 11:00. Warm tonight and was to have gotten cold & rain, maybe snow.


4. Up at 7:00. Raining some. Ate and ironed 3 blouses and cleaned up house. Sun out warm. Temp 70. Dressed and went down for mail Saw Margaret B. I went on down to see Dr. Nuge. Got outline of new insurance. Home at 1:10. Went down to college to football game. Hampton-Sydney. Concord won 34 to 7. Home at 4:10. Went over to Perry’s a few minutes. Home and Ennis called. I went down there. Sis and Samps were there. Home at 8:50. Raining some. Temp 62. Cold wave not here yet. Mr. Bud Shumate got home yesterday.


5. Sunday. Up at 8:00. Ate. Temp 58. Partly cloudy but temp going up. Read paper and just messed around. Watched football game at 2:00. Temp 72. Sun out. So nice. At 4:10 Sis and Samps came and brought my ladder back. Left at 5:45 Gene Conner came and paid me rent.


6. Up at 7:15. Cloudy. Temp 52. Read paper and dressed and went down to see Dr. Lilly a few minutes and back to store & helped at noon. Lodema took baby to Bluefield for Dr. Gatherum to examine the lump on baby’s head, but Dr. was in operation room. SHE has to go back tomorrow afternoon at 3:00. I watched my TV programs and rested. Raining. At 9:00 I went over to Mrs. Casto’s to see the night flower come out. Home and to bed at 10:15 after I took a bath.


7. Up at 4:05. Ate breakfast Temp 44. Raining a little and foggy. Dressed and went down to High School building at 5:45 to work the election. $500,000.00 bond issue. Maude Martin, Harry Crawford, Keith Thompson, Frank Parker and myself worked in the election. 123 for the bond issue and 42 against. Fine day. Cleared up but cold. Mitzi brought me a sandwich and drink at 12:30. At 3:00 a cup of coffee. Home at 7:50. All finished up. Not too tired. Home and rested and watched TV.


8. Up at 7:20. Temp 30 and cloudy. Snowed a few sprinkles early. Dressed and Mrs. Lilly called and I went down to see Dr. Lilly. He feels very good. I went on down to see Dr. Nuge a while and back to the store to help at noon. Home at 1:10. Sun out. Rested all afternoon. Slept some and missed some of my programs. Colder and windy all afternoon. $500,000.00 bond issue carried by a large majority, At 6:00 snowing some. Temp 30. Stopped snowing at 11:30.


9. No more snow during the night. Up at 6:40. Temp 20. Windy and cold all day. I washed up my clothes and hung them in the basement to dry. At 11:45 I went to store to help at noon. Home at 1:00. Put sheets out on the line to finish drying. Cold. Temp 34. Larry Jones came in and paid me on ins. - $15.00, I will wash my hair tonight – and did.


10. Up early. Ate & ironed all of my clothes. Mrs. Lilly called for me to come down at 1:45 to stay with Dr. Lilly till she went over to Princeton shopping. Ethel stopped in to see Dr. Lilly and also Fred Rogers. I went down to Dr. Vermillion’s at 5:30 and paid Mrs. Vermillion $15.00 paid me by Arthur Jones on ins. Home at 6:15. May Dobbins shower is at 7:30. Ate supper and dressed and went down to Community Building to Mae’s shower 37 present- nice party and so many presents. Home at 9:50. Not too cold and clear. I feel fine.


11. A fine day. Warm. Up at 8:20. Clear and warmer. Cleaned up my house. Ran sweeper and carried flowers down to basement. Read paper and dressed. At 1:00 I went down to Dr. Lilly’s a while and reported on party last night. On down to Quinzetta’s. Ate late dinner with them. I weighed – 150 lbs. Home at 5:00. Stopped by Ethel’s and they were gone. Stopped at store and on home. Cleaned out flowers and leaves alongside of house and put them in garden. Finished at 6:00. Cloudy late in the evening.


12. Sunday. Up at 8:00. Ate. Dressed and read paper. Put on a pot of beans. At 11:10 I went down to see Bud Shumate. He was rational but weak. Home. Sun out & nice and warm. Watched ballgame. Ennis and Kay came up for a while and left at 3:00. At 4:15 I went over to Mrs. Casto’s. Mr. Casto finished his patio and it looks fine. Home at 5:20. Ate supper and no one else came all day. I called Mrs. Vermillion and wished her a Happy Birthday. At 9:15 Fred Rogers called.


13. Up at 7:00. Partly cloudy. Warmer/e and went out in garden and cut down Chrysanthemums and locus sprouts & messed around. In at 10:00, dressed and went down to the store at 11:30 to help. Home and put putty in basement windows & watched my TV programs. At 3:45, Pat Twohig stopped in a few minutes. I went out again and worked a while. I took my step ladder and twine and wrapped my tall shrub in front yard clear to the top and tied it good so snow won’t ruin it - if we have a big one. In, ate supper and watched TV. Talked to Sis for a while. Sprinkled rain some.


14. Up at 7:00. Ate. Raining. Temp 56. Read paper & dressed and at 11:30 went down to store and helped at noon. I did not do anything today. I just rested on couch. Ate supper at 5:00. At 5:45 I went down to see Dr. Lilly a while and paid his bills. Home at 8:15. Cloudy but warm. Temp 58. Wes Martin’s two girls, Lessie and Goldie, had a wreck down near Welch. Lessie has a leg broken in 2 places- nearly tore off – both in Welch hospital.


15. Up at 8:00. Ate. Read paper & dresses and watched TV till 11:30. Cloudy. Temp 56. I went down to store at noon. Home at 1:15. Watched my programs and at 2:30, I went out in garden and took out trash, tomato vines & flower stems. I watched TV till 4:00 and went back to garden and cut weeds and down under hill & took up the rest of the trash & stacked it. Brought up some hay. Samps cut and put it on garden till 5:00. In, ate and rested a while. I went down to Dr. Toothman’s for my milk. It has been a nice day. Sun out some. Temp 60.


16. Up at 7:30. Raining some. Dressed and went down to see Dr. Vermillion. He was laying down – don’t feel so good – got a bottle of phenobarbital. Back to store and helped at noon. Home and I rested. Watched TV programs. Ethel came at 3:00 and left at 3:45- took my green dress to patch. Cool today.


17. Up at 8:00. Ate. Cleaned up house. At 9:30 Mrs. Lilly called and said Dr. is sick. Dr. Frank had been there and gave him a shot. She wanted me to come down and stay a while and I did. Helped at store at noon and went back at 1:00. Dr. worse – lots of pain in chest. Fred Rogers stopped a few minutes, At 3:00, Mrs. Lilly called Dr. Scott about what to do. At 3:30 an ambulance came for him and took him to hospital. Mrs. Lilly called at 6:00 and said that pain was angina pain – muscle pain in heart. Several called me about him. Home at 4:00. I had to go down and tell Dr. Nuge. Got home at 5:00.


18. Up at 8:00. Ate and read paper. Temp 34. Clear, sun out all day. I stayed in and did not go out till late in afternoon. Mrs. Lilly said that Dr. did not have a good night. Watched football game then went down to Ethel’s a while. Back to store and home. No one came. Watched TV till 9:30. Went to bed. A circle is around the moon and no stars inside,


19. Sunday. Up at 7:40. Ground covered with snow. Temp 28. Snowing and sleeting on and off all day. At 12:00 Samps and Sis stopped and we went up to restaurant for dinner and on down to their house. Ennis and Fern came- Fern had on her new coat. Ate supper and Samps brought me home at 6:00. Mrs. Lilly called and said that Dr. seems a little better late in afternoon. Still having pain and ate a little dinner. Went to bed at 11:00. Snowing just a little.


20. Up at 7:00. Ate. Temp 26. Cloudy & windy. Read paper and dressed and went down to see Dr. Vermillion. He had a bad night. Slept about 1 hour. Got Sis 1.00 phenobarbital. Helped at store. Home at 1:00. Watched my programs and rested. At 2:00 I went over and sat with Mrs. Casto till 3:00, home and watched my programs till 4:00. Got supper. Lemuel Southern came in to see about his ins he owes $45.00. I called Bo and then called back and told them about it. Watched TV and went to bed. Mrs. Lilly called and said that Dr. was some better she thought. I called Ray, Fred, Mrs. V., Mrs. Scott, Harry Crawford and Mrs. Bradley.


21. Up early 7:15. Temp 26. Partly cloudy. Ate and read paper, bathed and dressed. Went down to Mrs. Lilly’s and wrote Murphy Insurance about Dr. Lilly’s auto ins. and sent policy back to cancel for now. Helped at store and Mrs. Lilly and I left at 1:00 and went over to see Dr. and stayed till 5:00. Left Dick and Scott with him. Very weak and confused some. Dr. Klingensmith came in to see him a few minutes. Home at 5:30 and ate supper. I called Mrs. Vermillion and Fred Rogers. I laid down and rested.


22. Temp 20. A big frost. Up at 7:30. Ate, read paper and dressed. At 10:30 I went out to see Arthur Martin. He is very sick. Bud Shumate was taken back to hospital yesterday afternoon. On down to store and helped at noon. Home at 1:10. Watched my programs all afternoon till 4:00. I went over to see Perry. He is sick today. Mr. and Mrs. Casto left at 4:00 for the holidays. The Terrys left also. I took bottles down to Mrs. Toothman and a fruit cake. Cloudy. Called Mrs. Lilly called and said Dr. was better today – may sit up some tomorrow. Washed my hair tonight.


23. Up at 7:00 Raining. Ate, read paper & watched Macy’s parade in New York till 12:00. Sis and Samps came at 11:30 and, at 12:30, we went up to restaurant for a turkey dinner. QDs and Jesses would not join us. Pouring rain. We drove over to Princeton Hospital to see Dr. Lilly. He was fine and Mr. Bud Shumate. He is very sick... Home at 2:45. Watched TV – ballgame – and from 3 to 4 – my programs. Slept some too. Still raining at 7:00.


24. Up early. Big frost. Ate, dressed and went down to Mrs. Lilly’s a few minutes and home. At 10:10 Sis and I went to Bluefield hunting a defroster for her jeep. We looked everywhere. We ate dinner at the 5 & 10 store. Got home at 3:30. No defroster could we find. I was tired and so was Sis. At 4:10 I went down to Dr. Nuge and paid him for my insurance on town house. Lillyan and Carl came in to see him. I left and came home and rested. The Castos came in.


25. Up early. A big frost. Ate, dressed And Sis came. We went to Hinton in jeep. Samps took her car in to have it tuned up. We found or Samps did 2 defrosters like she wanted for jeep at Roy’s store. She got both of them... Home and ate dinner at Shumate’s restaurant. Then I went down to see Dr. Lilly. He came home from hospital. Dick 7 I went down to Dr. V. to check his plates – loose and he cannot eat on them. I took the ham that Jesse gave me down to Sis’s and put it in her deep freeze. Back and stopped at Aunt Emma’s a while. Home. At 6:30 Helen Caperton came and left at 9:15.


26. Sunday. Up at 8:00. Partly cloudy and warm. Ate. Cleaned up and dressed and went down to Dr. Lilly’s a few minutes. Back and stopped at Bud Shumate’s a few minutes. He was fine. Home at 12:00. Ate and watched football game. No one called today. Watched Car 54 tonight – Hugh Downs was on it.


27. Up at 7:20. Raining. Temp 50. Ate, read paper, dressed and watched TV till 11:30. Went down and helped at store at noon. Home and rested all afternoon. No one came today. At 7:00 I went over and visited Mrs. Casto till 9:00. Mr. Casto at school.


28. Up at 7:20. Temp 26. Clear all day – windy tho. I dressed and went down and helped at store and home at 1:10. I watched my programs at 1:30. At 2:30, I went to basement and washed 1 dress & starched it. I watched my programs from 3 to 4. I went to basement and washed my brown gabardine dress and hung it in the basement to ry. Ennis called and talked a while. No one came today.


29. Temp 16 above. No wind. A monkey was sent around the world – 2 trips today from Cape Canaveral in Florida. I dressed and went down to Dr. Lilly’s at 10:40. Paid auto ins. and power bill. Back to store and helped at store at noon. Temp 32 and clear. The monkey was recovered ok near Bermuda.


30. Up at 7:20. Temp 20. Clear and no wind. Dressed and watched TV till 11:30. Went down to store and helped. Home, rested till 2:00. I went down to Dr. Lilly’s. Dick and I went down & took an impression for Dr. Nuge to tighten his upper denture and back to Dr. Lilly’s. I ran up a model and waited for it to set & trimmed it. Home and ate supper at 5:30. At 6:30 Garnet Gautier called and came up at 7:00. We visited until 10:50 when Judy came for her. I went to bed at 12:00. A fine day – warming up a lot.


December


1. Up at 7:20. Ate. Sun up. Warmer. Dressed and watched programs till 11:00. Went down to Lemuel Southern’s and Exie paid me$7.50 on their insurance. I went to the store and helped at noon. Home at 1:00. Watched programs till 2:00. I went out and painted two basement sills and facing and plank on top of fence at driveway & the railing down steps at back porch. At 3:00 I watched my programs. Then went down to Dr. Nuge’s. I got his plate from the lab and put it in and he said that it felt all right. Back to Dr. Lilly’s and paid him $10.00 from Willard Waters. He paid it to Jesse. Dr. Frank Holroyd came and I left at 6:30. I went to high school gym. We beat both games – junior high and high school teams. A large crowd there. Warmer a lot. A fine day.


2. Up at 9:20. Temp 42 & raining just a little. I washed out 2 sweaters & slip & pantys. Cleaned paint brush. Did not sleep good last night. Watched football game till 4:30. I went down for mail and to store. Sis and Samps and I came up to restaurant at 5:15 for supper and home. Foggy a sight and drizzling some. Watched TV, talked to Ethel a while and went to bed at 11:15. Temp 42.


3. Sunday. Up at 8:00. Temp in 60’s today. Ate. Mrs. Lilly called and said that Dr. Lilly wanted a report on Dr. Nuge. Dressed and went down to Dr. Nuge and he is doing fine with his dentures. I went to Dr. Lilly’s and gave him the report on Dr. Nuge/ Home at 11:50. Dressed again and Sis and Samps came at 12:30 and we ate dinner at Shumate’s restaurant & drove to Uncle Hade’s. They were gone and we drove on over to Pineville and home at 5:00. At 6:00 I went down to Fred Rogers. They made me eat supper with them. Fred, David and Carol. I got home at 9:00. It had been a fine day and so warm. Sun and warm all day.


4. Up at 7:20. Ate. Cloudy some. I took leaves from under porch and around trees. At 11:00 I dressed and went down to store and helped at noon. Home and washed windows on outside in kitchen, my bedroom and front porch. Watched my programs till 4:00. Got supper – hamburgers and field onions. Mimi called at 4:40 for me to go to Princeton with Samps, Sis and her to see Christmas parade at 6:00. Boy what a crowd. Princeton full of cars and people. We parked at De Hart’s filling station. Saw it fine. Home at 7:10. Clear at 8:00. Lots of stars. May get bad. Temp 54.


5. Up at 7:20. Ate. Temp 46. Cloudy. My paper was blown around behind house and under blue spruce. I called the paper boy before I found it and he brought me another one. Dressed, read paper and watched TV until 11:30. I went down for mail and got a card from MaryLee. Helped at store and home at 1:20. Watched programs and dusted and cleaned furniture in living room. At 4:00, I went over to Perry’s a few minutes. Home and burnt trash. Ate supper. I took bottles down to Toothman’s and home. At 6:00, I dressed and went down to High School gym to see ball game. Athens Hi 59 vs. Spanishburg Hi 47. It was a close game till the last quarter. Temp 29 at 9:00.


6. Up early. Ate and washed and hung clothes outside. Windy. Everything dried nicely. Dressed and helped at the store at noon. Home at 1:10. Brought in clothes and sprinkled the, down. Watched my programs. At 4:00 I went down to see Dr. Lilly a while. He was fine. Home at 5:10. Ate supper. At 5:45 I went down to Dr. Toothman’s for milk and Mrs. Toothman gave me 2 eggs, home at 7:00. Watched TV and rested. Cool and windy. Temp 38 at 7:00.


7. Up at 8:00. Ate and ironed up all of my wash. Dressed, read paper and at 11:45 went down to store and helped at noon. Jesse gone to market and oh boy we had a mess at the store. Billie Fain helped us. Home at 1:15. A man stopped and said that he would trim my trees in the morning for $15.00. I told him to come on and do it. Watched my programs. Mrs. Jones and Glen Martin operated Perry’s filling station today. At 4:00 I went down to see Dr. Nuge awhile and home at 5:15. Ate and dressed and went to the gym to see Hi School and alumni play basketball. Alumni won. Cold.


8. Up at 7:20. Temp 18 & clear. Ate. At 8:30 men came and trimmed my 3 maple trees for me. I dressed and helped at store at noon. Went to bank and transferred things out of my lock box to a new one. Fern came at 1:30 and we took all of the limbs out of the yard and piled them below garden to burn – finished by 3:30. Temp 32 all day. Ethel came at 2:40 and left at near 5:00.


9. Sleet against my window woke me up. At 7:30 and it was pouring. Temp 25. Samps went to Roanoke with Glen and the Parkers. I stayed at home all day. Car covered with ice. Sleeting and freezing rain all day. Talked to Sis, Mrs. Vermillion and Fred Rogers. Road machines went down taking up the sleet and ice on road. A real bad day. I went over to Mrs. Casto a few minutes at 10:45 this morning.


10. Sunday. Up at 9:00. Cloudy & warmer. Temp 43. All of the ice is nearly gone.  Bathed, dressed and read paper. Raining around 11:30. At 2:00, I was watching football game and Sis called for me to come down.  Could not get my car started so Samps came and got me. We got supper and ate at 4:30 – a good supper – and washed dishes. At 6:00 Samps brought me home. At 7:00 Fred Rogers called to see if I was okay.


11. Up at 8:00. Ate. Foggy with temp 0f 42. Dressed and read paper. At 10:00 Mrs. Lilly called to check on me and I will go down at 2:00 and stay with Dr. while she goes to her Flower Garden Club. Jesse came at 10:15 and started my car. I will go down at 11:00 to help at the store. Lodema is home with baby who is sick with a cold. Home at 1:10 and watched my programs till 1:50. Went down to Dr. Lilly’s. Raining. Preacher and his wife from Princeton came by to see Dr. Lilly and stayed about 20-30 minutes. Mrs. Lilly got home at 4:30. I came home soon thereafter. Raining pretty hard. I filled up my gas tank at Perry’s station. Gas – 26.2. A war on gas here with all 4 stations. At 8:15, Fern brought me part of a loaf of bread. She forgot to tell Jesse to bring it. Temp 42. Wind from east. Got 3 Christmas cards today.


12. Up at 7:30. Ate. Cloudy. Temp 52. Raining some. Read paper and dressed and went downtown – stopped to see Mr. Bud a few minutes. On down to store. Lodema is home with baby. Helped at store and home at 1:00. Watched programs till four.  Aunt Emma called for me to come down. Ethel wanted me to see the candles that she had made. They were beautiful. I ate supper with them. Aunt Emma feeling fine. Home at 6:15. Got news and weather – said that temp would drop fast tonight – in the 20’s- and maybe snow. At 7:00 I went over and visited Mrs. Casto awhile Had Glen Martin put brake fluid in my car - $2.00.


13. Up at 8:00. Temp 17. Cold & clear. Ate and read paper, dressed and watched TV till 11:00. Went down to help at store at noon. Lodema still home with baby – sick with a cold. Home at 1:00 and watched TV till 4:00. Sun out all day but cold – stayed 22 all day and at noon snowed just a little. Mrs. Lilly called to see how I was and said that Dr. is sleepy and weak. I went down to see Dr. V. at 4:15 and home at 5:30. Temp 19 at 6:45.


14.Temp 17. Up at 8:00. Clear. Ate and read paper. Dressed and went down to help at store at noon. Lodema has not been there all week. Home at 1:00 and watched my programs till 4:00 & slept some. I dressed and went down to see Dr. Lilly a while. He was fine and home at 5:30. Warmer some- temp going up. Ate supper, saw news and washed my hair. At 7:30, temp 34.


15. Up at 7:50. Temp 26 and clear. Ate, cleaned up house and read paper. Dressed and went down for mail & helped at store. Lodema was there with the baby – still has a cold. Home at 1:00. Dressed and at 2:00 drove over to Princeton and loafed around a while. I couldn’t take it. I go in car and came home by 4:00. Read the Princeton Times paper, got supper, ate, and loafed around. Had oil changed in my car. Glen Martin did it for me - $1.44. Clear all day & warmer. Temp 34 at 6:00.


16. Up at 8:00. Ate. Raining just a little bit. New bank opens for business today. Temp 30 at 8:30. Dressed and at 10:30 I took Dr. Uriah a box of candy for his birthday. He is 81 today. Houston Via was there. Back and stopped to see Dr. Lilly a few minutes. He and Dr. Uriah are going up to the bank at 2:00. Neither has seen it since remodeling started. They moved in yesterday and opened for business this morning. Looks so nice. I baked a custard pie. Mrs. Lilly called and said that Dr. Lilly could not go. He was so weak from dressing. Raining and freezing right on trees at 4:30 - temp 28. At 9:00, temp 38 – gone up.


17. Sunday. Up at 8:00. Temp 50. Ate breakfast. Put on beans and made slaw. Called Sis to come in as they come from church. Sis came at 12:00 – she did not go to church- and Samps stopped at 12:20. I had dinner ready – chicken and custard pie – a surprise for them. Sis stayed and Samps went home to keep the fire going. They ate supper with me. Sis & I went over to Casto’s a few minutes. He was decorating his front door – real pretty. Sis and Samps left at 7:15. Raining a little. Temp 56 today. At 9:30, pouring rain.


18. Up at 7:45. Ate. Foggy and misting a little. Dresses, read paper and at 10:30 I went down to Dr. Lilly’s to help with business. Helped at store at noon. At 1:00 I took Lodema and baby down to see Dr. Nuge. He was in bed asleep and no one else around, so we left. Home at 1:00. Watched my programs and mopped front porch. Went down for Lodema and she was gone at 3:30 to Princeton with the baby. I went down to Dr. Lilly’s and we wrote checks. At 5:00 I went down to see Dr. Nuge a while. Home at 5:40. Clear, sun shone some today. Temp went up to 58. Very nice today. This morning I took the pole cat over the hill that Glen Martin had shot for me Saturday morning in backyard. Bud Shumate is back in hospital – pretty sick.


19. Up at 7:40. Ate. Temp 45. Partly cloudy. Read paper and dressed. Went down to get mail. Gave P.O. employees a box of candy. Helped at store at noon. At 12:40 went down to stay with Dr. Lilly till Mrs. Lilly and Dick got in at 10 to 5. She went shopping. Dr. was fine. Took a good nap. I started his car for him. It is ok. Home at 5:10. Ate and got ready and went to Athens High gym to basketball games at 6:30. Welch High 52, Athens High 54. Oh, what a game. We were never ahead until the last 1 ½ minutes of the game. The sun shone some today,


20. Up at 7:40. Temp 30 and snowing. Some wind. Ate and read paper and dressed. Ennis called and we talked for a while. At 10:30 went downtown to help at programs. Snowing some along all day. At 4:00 I went down to see Dr. Vermillion. Home at 5:15. Cold. Temp 38.


21. Up at 8:00. Ate, read the paper and cleaned up the house. Dressed and watched programs till 12:00. Went downtown for mail and gro. Home and baked a custard pie. Watched programs till 4:00. Went down to Quinzetta’s for my ham that Jesse gave to me and stayed for supper. Home at 6:00. Put light in window for Christmas. Took Sissy’s lights over to Mr. Casto – outside ones. I went to Princeton with Mr. and Mrs. Casto to see Christmas lights... They were beautiful. Home at 10:00. Temp 26 and clear.


22. Up at 7:00. Ate and read paper. A big frost. Put my ham on to bake. Wrapped it in foil as Mrs. Lilly told me to do. It cooked from 8:10 to 12:30. Tasted it and it was good. Mr. Rogers called and he had visited Dr. Nuge and Donzie this morning, also Mrs. Rogers. Clear and temp rising. Went down to sit with Dr. Lilly while Mrs. Lilly and the Bibbees go shopping. I got home at 5:15. Put my ham out on the back porch to cool off. Ate supper. Dr. Lilly gave me $25.00 for Christmas – was shocked and surprised. A fine day, not too cold. Sun shone all day.


23. Up at 8:00. Temp 33. Pouring snow. Ground covered. Sis called at 9:00 and said that she was going to Princeton in the jeep. I went with her and got some shopping done. Home at 12:00. Mimi called at 1:00 and said that Sis, Samps and her were going to Princeton and for me to be ready. Stopped snowing around 11:00 and the sun came out. We got back from Princeton at 4:45. We ate and had some of the ham that I had baked. It was good. Ennis called for Samps and Sis to come down. They went. Snowing again. Temp 32. I stayed home. Dr. Withers came with presents, candy and pudding. Dr. John Shumate married Carrie white yesterday – Mrs. Vermillion told me.


24. Sunday. Up at 8:00. Temp 18 and snowing some. Read paper. Gave the paper boy a box of candy. Took a bath and dressed. Mrs. Fred Rogers called and said that Fred would come at 5:00 to go down and eat supper with them. Ate dinner and rested a lot. Dressed at 4:00. Fred came for me. Fred David, Carrol and Mr.  & Mrs. EB McNeer also came for supper. Home at 6:40. Sis and Samps came and brought me Christmas presents. We went down to QDs. Home at 10:30. Snowing. A high wind all day.


25. Temp 14. No wind. Snowing a little all day. Up at 8:00. At 9:30 I called Mrs. Vermillion and she said that Dr. was real sick. They took him over to Margaret’s last night for supper and he got sick over there. Sis and Samps came up here for dinner as the restaurant was closed – we were to eat dinner there. At 11:00 Sis & Samps took me down to Dr. Nuge. He is very sick I think. Back and stopped to report to Dr. Lilly. Home and stayed in the rest of the day. We ate dinner and at 2:30 Sis and Samps went home. Samps feels bad. I rested rest of day. Called again about Dr. Nuge – maybe some better Mrs. Vermillion said. Talked to Fred Rogers a while. Talked to Mrs. Casto. Snowing. Temp never got above 22 all day. A white Christmas.


26. Up at 7:00. Ate. Temp 14. Clear and still. Called Mrs. Vermillion and she said that Dr. had a fair night. Had eaten a few bites of oatmeal but still in bed. Dr. Lillys are all ok. I dressed and at 12:30 went out and got snow off of car and it started first time I tried it – first time since Friday I had been in car. Went down to Ethel’s and took her Christmas presents and Emma and went on down to see Dr. Vermillion. He is real sick. Dr. Hale came to see him. Ad I left at 2:30 ambulance came and got Dr. and took him to hospital in Princeton. He has pneumonia and pleurisy. Very sick, Dr. Hale said. Sis and I took Christmas presents up to Dr. and Mrs. Withers. She was too sick to see us. Home. Sis got her band ring that Mr. Casto had made for her. After supper I took Perry & Mae Martin a box of candy. No one else came. It was a fine day. I gave Mrs. Casto an apron and some ham slices (3).


27. Up at 8:20. After a bad night. Up at 12:30 and took toddy of whiskey so I could sleep. Read paper and dressed. Raining at 12:00. Temp 38 at 1:00. Mae Martin came in and gave me a beautiful apron. I was ready to go down to Dr. Lilly’s. I took her downtown. I helped take care of Dr. Lilly’s bills and wrote S.R. Lerke his last payment. I came home near 5. Ate. Snowing some and temp dropping. At 5:45 Harry and Eula and Vickie came for a while. Aunt Emma called and Ethel left for Portsmouth today. Margaret called and said Dr. was some better. They have nurses around the clock with him. Snowing hard – ground is covered at 7:00. Samps is better. Listened to WVa U & Utah State basketball game. Started at 12:00 midnight. WVa U lost by 2 points.


28. Up and have a 3-4 inch snow and snowing. Temp 17. My telephone went out at 10:30. I called nurse at hospital, and she said that Dr. Nuge was about the same. Sis called me for some penicillin for Samps – cold worse. She came for it at 12:45. Ate and at 2:00 went to basement and put out my washing. Hung the clothes in the basement. Temp only got up to 22 all day. I was not out of the house except on back porch to feed the birds. Talked to Mrs. Rogers, Lydia Caperton, Henry Crawford, and Cleo Noble on the phone. Kept me busy answering it. Snowing hard at 10:00. I listened to basketball game in California. WVa U and Purdue. Tournament. Ray Cheatwood, Boob and Meredith Via were there. Flew by plane Thursday to California.


29. Up at 7:50. Temp 4 above zero. And snowing. Brought up clothes – all dry. Sprinkled them to iron and watched TV & read paper till 12:00. Ate and ironed till 1:30. Watched programs then ironed some more. At 3:00 rested and watched programs till 4:00. From These Roots was their last show and My Five Daughters will take their spot at 3:30 Tuesday. Snowed and flurried all day. Temp did not get above 12 above all day. Garnet Gautier called and said that there was a wreck on Princeton curve at Withers’ – 1 dead and 5 injured. Head on collision – icy roads. Mrs. Casto called. Talked to Mrs. Lilly and she said that Dr. Vermillion is some better. Dick had stopped to see him.


30. Up at 8:20. Temp0 above and snowing, Boy it is cold. Margaret called and said that Dr. was better and had a good night. Ate and cut up some of the ham to put in deep freeze…Cleaned and ran sweeper. Sis came and brought mail. Got a letter from MaryLee. Samps still sick. Watched football games – 2 of them. Sun out and a very nice day. I have not been out of the house since Wednesday. Car covered with snow. Ate. At 6:10, Jesses came for a few minutes – maybe 15 minutes, no longer. Mrs. Vermillion says Dr. seems some better.


31. Sunday. Up at 8:30. Temp 18. Cloudy, snowing a little. Ate, bathed and read paper. Dressed and rested all day. Watched football game. Talked to Sis and Samps is still sick. Dr. Hale was leaving town so Sis could not get Samps in to see him. Jesse stopped in for $200.00 to buy cattle. At 6:45 Uncle Hade, MaryLee and Delmer came. Snowing some. They brought me a pink sweater and a pair of hose. Left at 9:30. Still snowing. Mrs. Vermillion called and said Dr. was blue and she was not too pleased.
