January
1. Sunday Temp 18. Cold but sun bright. Went up for milk & paper and home. Got ready and went up to Aunt Emma’s for a turkey New Year’s dinner and a big dinner. Verena & Jimmy were there. Home at 2:45. At 6:00, Sis and Samps came for a few minutes. At 6:45 Jesses came for a little while. They left but Harry’s 3 came. Lloyd’s took Betty Alice back to “Morris” hospital after 2 weeks at home.
2. A very nice day... Wind cold. I went over to Rev. Moore’s a few minutes, got milk & paper and home. Sis and Samps was here. They left and Bill and Lizzie came at 12:20 and left at 1:30. We went over to Jesse’s for our first meal with them. Sis & Samps & Fern & Kay were there. Ennis went to Rev. Moore’s funeral and burial. We came home at 3:30 & watched football games on TV in Rose Bowl. Tired at bedtime.
3. Temp 28 & cloudy. I went up town and wrote insurance policies & up to store. Samps helping Jesse. Home at 11:30 and cleaned up house and put things away. Warmer a lot in the afternoon.
4. A nice day. Went up town for paper & milk. Dad went for the first time in two weeks. Quinzetta fell and hurt her back. At 5:30 Dad and I went up to Harry’s for a few minutes. At 6:30, all of the grandchildren came to see Dad on his birthday. I served custard pie, ice cream, cola and coffee. All gone at 9:30. QDs last to leave.
5. A very nice day. Cold tho. Went up town for milk & mail. Dr. Vermillion told me that Scott & Mary Rogers home burned last night. Harry Wiley went over to visit them and saw the house was on fire when they got in sight. Lost nearly everything. Harrys came over a while and told us all about the fire.
6. A fine day. I went to Princeton for chicken feed and home at 12:30 - left at 10:30. I went down in pines for kindling. Dad came down too. Nice & warm. Got in nice load of kindling.
7. Up early and snowing. Cold – snowed some all day. Went up town for milk and paper and up to store a few minutes. Quinzetta came over a while. Granville Pennington in hospital - heart attack and in OX tent. I gave dad a bath at 8:30. High winds all.
8. Sunday Cold. Temp 10 above & snowed a little all day. Went up for milk & paper & home. Jesse & Mitzi came to get Quincy’s sausage mill. We laid down and slept a while. Nobody came. High winds all day. Temp not above 26 all day. Temp 17 at bedtime.
9. Temp 12 above. Snowing early. Up at 6:00. House warm. I kept fire going all night. Went up town for milk & paper. I had tooth filled & cleaned and wrote one policy. Dr. Vermillion was called to Tom Beckett’s. Tom had a stroke. Dr. didn’t think that he would live until he could get him to hospital in Bluefield. He is in an oxygen tent. Boob and Eula took Mrs. Kessinger to hospital in Princeton last night. Snowing a little all day. At 6:30, temp 19.
10. Tom Beckett is still living. Temp 14. Cold and snowing a little all day. Hasn’t stopped since last Saturday morning. Went up for milk & home. Walt St. Clair buried at Elgood today. Mrs. Hobbs very sick. Harrys came over at 2:00 and stayed till 3:30. Aunt Mollie Martin died at 6:00 in Princeton.
11. Snowing still this morning. Not much but about 2 inches of snow on the ground. Went up town for milk & paper. Tom Beckett no better. Mrs. Chester Hobbs died suddenly last night at 9:00 before Dr. Vermillion could get there. 6:30 Harrys came over and left at 9:00. Snowing still - Temp 29 at 9:00.
12. Snowing this morning. Temp 26. Called operator and she said that Tom Beckett died at 5:00 this morning - never regained consciousness. Mollie Martin buried today. Aunt Nannie Hypes buried today - died Tuesday. Samps & Sis came over before they went home from store & school. Left at 7:00. Snowing.
13. Temp 26. Snowing yet just a little. Went up town for milk and mail. Drove up to Harry’s a few minutes at 12:00 and Mrs. Coburn was giving Eula a permanent. Paul Cooper died suddenly from a heart attack in his apartment in Princeton. He is a brother of our telephone operator & Jesse & QD worked and rode with him to Celanese. Temp 20 at bedtime.
14. Temp 18. Snowing just a little. Cleared up and sun out most all day. Went up town for milk, paper and mail. Got a card from MaryLee. . Melted a little today. Temps in 30’s. Tom Beckett’s funeral & burial this afternoon. Fogg & Lynch had services, also Masons. Tonight temp back to 20 above. This has been our worse winter in a long time.
15. Sunday Temp 5 above this morning. Clear & cloudy. Went up for milk & paper and up to Uncle Doc’s a few minutes and home. Jesse & Mitzi were here when I got home. Ate dinner and laid down and slept a while. This evening Harry’s came over for a while and left at 8:10.
16. Temp 16. Snowing again this morning - fine as meal. Went up town and filled out Social Security tax blanks and it is just pouring snow-hardest of any that we have had. Home and ate dinner. I went back and wrote insurance policies up for fear that the snow will get too deep to get out. Stopped snowing at 3:30. Most snow that we have had all winter. My kidneys bad. Dr. gave me penicillin to take.
17. Snowing early this morning. Temp 14 above. Cloudy all day. Went up for milk & paper and home. Cleared up late in afternoon. Cecil E Holdren died tonight in Princeton Hospital from a coronary thrombosis - Heart (attack).
18. Temp 14. Cloudy early but cleared up and was the nicest day that we have had for weeks. Temp went up to 40 by 2:00. Went up town at 10:00 and wrote up all of the ins. policies for the rest of the month. We did not go to the gym to see Athens High play Princeton Hi Princeton won 75-65. We listened on the radio. At 8:00, Temp 28. Dad feeling too bad to go.
19. Temp 28. Has sleeted and rained from 4:00 on and everything is covered with ice. Dangerous. Snowing, sleeting and raining all at the same time. Got out without a slip. Cecil Holdren buried at Elgood today. Sis & Samps came over for a while. Florence Grim and Ann Casey came over at 6:00 selling cards.
20. Snowing today - a real fine snow. Temp 16. Went up town for milk & paper & mail. This evening Harry & Eula came and stayed for fight.
21. Temp 15 above. Snowed again today - fine as sugar. Temp never got above 30 in the last 21 days. Went up town this morning at 10:30 and wrote up endorsement on insurance. Temp 20 at bedtime.
22. Sunday Temp 15 above zero. Clear today - first day for 10 days. Went up for milk & paper. Stopped to see Aunt Emma a few minutes. She is sick. Jesse & Mitzi came over at 11:30 for a while. Gave Jesse a coffee cup and saucer. Nobody came during afternoon. Temp went up to 40 today. Melted a lot. At 7:00 Uncle Hade and MaryLee & Jim came and left at 9:30. Served them applesauce cake, coffee and pickles.
23. Temp 17. Up early. Just pouring snow and on to late afternoon. Went up town for milk & paper, home and got dinner. At 2:00, about 2 inches of snow. Ethel took Aunt Emma to hospital today - very sick.
24. Temp 15. Cloudy early. Snowed a little. Cleared up by 11:00 melting some. Went to Princeton for chicken mash & coffee & get Dad’s prescription filled. Home by 2:30. Samps & Sis came over for cow feed I got for them at Farm Bureau. Dr. V sent Rev. Tom Peters to hospital - stroke slight.
25. Temp 16. Cloudy and just pouring snow at 10:30. I went up for milk & mail & paper. Snowing late this evening. Pocahontas High beat Athens High 70-66. We have only won 1 game. Harrys came.
26. Cloudy this morning. Temp 15. Snowing a real fine snow. I went up town for milk & paper & met Harry & Eula coming over. They stayed for dinner and left at 3:15. QD came to look for hay for his 2 cows.
27. Temp 9 above. Mostly cloudy all day. Snowed a little. Bernice Parker’s father died today.
28. Temp 14. Cold again. Cloudy. Jennings came and got hay for QD today. Went up town for milk & paper. Jason Shumate fell and broke his leg. Dr. sent him to hospital. Sleeting and raining at 1:10. Samps & Sis came and got hay. Jesses all came around 8:00 and left at 9:00. Raining at 9:30.
29. Sunday Temp 32. Raining and slick. I went for paper & milk. A bad day. Thundered during the night. Nobody came today. Temp up and melting.
30. Temp 48 this morning - raining hard. Went up for milk & paper and up to the office for a few minutes and home. Temp dropping. QD & Ennis came over for a few minutes. Got a bushel of potatoes. I gave him a high stem dish and coffee cup and saucer, a cream pitcher, 1 pink bowl & 1 square dish. Temp at 8:15 26 above - snowing a little.
31. Temp 20. Cloudy early but I washed. Cold. Clothes froze. I cleaned out the chicken house. Went up town for milk & paper. Home. I ironed all of my clothes.
February
1. Cloudy today & cold. Went up town for milk & paper. & home. I took Lodema & kids to Princeton shopping. We went up to hospital. I saw Aunt Emma a few minutes. Jimmy was taking her to Verena’s. Ethel in bed with flu. Mrs. Lilly came home from Princeton with us. Home at 4:00. Harry and Eula came this evening. Sleeting, just pouring, for 2 or 3 hours.
2. Cold and raining a lot. Temp 28. Sleet nearly all gone. Went up town and wrote insurance and home. I cleaned the sweeper and mopped & dusted.
3. Cold & cloudy and raining today. Temp 36. Went up town and home. I cleaned and waxed floors in kitchen. Harry came over a few minutes at 6:30. Fred and Mrs. Rogers came over. Walked in from Broadway. Jesses all came. Jesse fixed noise in refrigerator. I gave them some old dishes.
4. Temp 26. Raining during the night. Ice froze on everything. At 10:20 Florence Grim called that she and Alice Lee would be over to spend the day. So I went up town for milk & got them and Garnet and brought them over for dinner. Harry came just when we got ready to eat but he wouldn’t eat with us. Ann & Judy came at 3:00 - fire is out at home - so I took them home. George Wright won $1,000,000 on TV program tonight. Raining.
5. Sunday Raining early but cleared up and temp went up to 50 before the day was over. I went over for milk & paper. We went over to see Ethel. She is better. On down to see Sis a few minutes. Dad’s first time out of the house since Jan.4th - his birthday. I took him up town and home. Harrys came over a while.
6. Raining when we got up & rained some all day. Went up town early and stopped at Sally’s to see Betty Alice. Came home to stay. Worked on road today - Ditches and all around. Just pouring rain at 8:30.
7. Raining some today.
8. I washed today. Some wind. Very nice today. I went over for milk & paper.
9. A very nice day. Went up town for milk, mail and paper. Ennis and I went down to Mae Dove’s a few minutes. We went to gym to see Bluefield Hi & Athens Hi. 75-71 in overtime period. Tore Dad up so bad, we won’t go back.
10. Cloudy & cool. Dad didn’t rest good last night - nervous & weak. I went up town for mail & paper. Drove up to Harry’s a minute. Feeling bad. Laid down on bed all afternoon. Dad not feeling too good.
11. I went to Princeton for chicken feed & coffee - home by 11:40. I baked a cake this pm. We don’t feel good. Nobody came.
12. Spitting snow this morning. Dad is sick. I went to Dr. Vermillion for med. Everybody is sick - belly ache and fainting. We laid in bed all day till Harrys came at 4:15. They left at 6:10. Uncle Hade and MaryLee came at 6:50 and left at 9:10. I got supper for them. We enjoyed having them.
13. Up and 3-4 inches of snow and still snowing. I went up and wrote insurance & cleaned up office. Home and not feeling too good. Laid down on bed most of afternoon. Dad still feels bad. Samps and Sis came over a few minutes.
14. Up and so sick-me-Verlie. Dad sick too. I finally got breakfast over but had to lay down a time or two to vomit. Dad called Dr. Vermillion at 1:30. He came and gave me some med. It helped but boy, I am sick. Jesse came out a few minutes at/near 3:00. Missed going to town today - too sick to go. Fred Rogers called.
15. Cloudy. I am better some. I went up town for mail & milk-2 quarts - and home. I hit the bed. Barty Wyatt in hospital - pneumonia. QD’s family came over to see us a while. Fred Rogers called about us.
16. A very nice day. No sun. Not so cold. Went up town for mail and up & had Dr. check specimen for Dad. Has albumen so had to start his kidney pill again today.
17. Raining. Dad still sick.
18. Raining and snowed some. Went up town for milk & groceries. Cleaned up house some. Aunt Emma is still in hospital.
19. Sunday Raining most of day. I went up for paper & milk & home. Cool. Rained a lot today. Samps & Sis came over a few minutes. At 7:00, Harry and Eula came.
20. Raining today. Temp cold early. I went up town and did some insurance work. Mr. J Weeks died suddenly at 10:00. Giles Martin had a stroke yesterday and is in the hospital in Princeton. QD & Ennis came over a few minutes at 2:00. Mr. Calfee came while they were here for a visit.
21. Cloudy. Temp 23. I washed and it started snowing early & flurried all day. I ironed most everything. Temp never got above 33 all day.
22. Snowed a little. Temp 12 this morning. Mrs. Kahle told me Giles Martin had died at 10:00 last night. I went over to Mrs. Weeks’ a few minutes. On up town and wrote 2 policies and home by noon. Finished up ironing by 3:00. Mrs. Carrie Kessinger died at 7:00 tonight. Harry’s came over for a while.
23. Went up town for milk & mail & paper. Cloudy & cold. Wrote insurance. I baked Uncle Hade an applesauce cake for his birthday which is next Tuesday. Samps & Sis came over for hay & visited a little while.
24. Temp 30. Raining this morning. I went over to Estel Oxley’s a few minutes to see Giles Martin. His funeral is at 1:30 this afternoon. Mrs. Carrie Kessinger to be buried this afternoon - funeral at 3:00 at the Methodist church. Temp going up. Jessie’s all came over for a short visit.
25. Raining. Wind high. Temp 56 at 10:00. Went up for milk, groceries and paper. Wind really high. Raining hard. Wind done a lot of damage to antennas and roofs. Ours okay. Blew down one of my apple trees down near the garden.
26. A very nice day. Cold early. Temp 23. Harry’s came over a while.
27. Raining today. Temp 56. I went to Princeton to get Dad’s prescription filled and laying mash. I went up town, wrote insurance and went up to Eula’s a minute. Mailed Uncle Hade an applesauce cake for his birthday. QD & family came. Thundering and lightning at 8:00. Wind high and raining.
28. Snowing just a little today. Temp 20. Went up town for milk and paper. Dr. Vermillion went to Buchannan for College Basketball Tournament. Concord had to play Bluefield State College - colored team and got beat. Uncle Hade’s birthday today.
29. Ground white with snow. Temp 20 and still snowing a little. Up to get milk and home to hear Ike Eisenhower say that he would run again for President of the US. Cleaned pantry and washed walls. At 10:00, Dad and I stayed up to hear Ike talk to the nation on his health.
March
1. Clear. Temp 30. A nice frost. Went up town and wrote insurance and home. March came in pretty. Sun out. Temp 52 at 2:00. Went to pines and got me some kindling. Dad went along and made him so weak when he got back to hoe. Cloudy.
2. Rained today.
3. Cloudy a lot. Not so cold. Samps & Sis came for a while. Pouring the rain.
4. Clear. Very nice. I went up for milk & paper & down to Compton’s to see Mae Dove a little while. They are taking her back to hospital to have her side taped. Jesse & Mitzi came over a few minutes. We went up to see Lloyd’s a little while & up to Alice Lee’s - on to cemetery and home. Harry’s came for a while. Ethel came for a while. Ethel came for Dad’s med for Aunt Emma.
5. Very nice morning. I washed. Wind high. Temp went up to 68. I ironed up all of my clothes. Mr. Fred Rogers came home from hospital--a major operation. I hear the frogs hollering. We went over to Ethel’s to see how Aunt Emma was---she is better.
6. A beautiful day. Sun nice. Lots of wind. I went up town and wrote insurance. Dad went along---First time in several weeks. Went up to Harry’s before we came home. Got a lot of kindling in today. Trimmed grapevines & cleaned chicken house. At 6:00 we went up to Harrys for a little while. Eula has been sick.
7. Cloudy & clear. Temp at 8:00 is 62. Warm all night. Windy, raining a lot today. I took Lodema to courthouse to have Mimi vaccinated for polio but such a crowd we left & came home. Just pouring rain while we were there. Temp went to 68. Wind high when we went to bed.
8. Up and temp 60. Sun bright. Temp went to 68 today. Maples blooming. Wind high and temp hi.
9. Temp 32 & pouring the snow. Dropped from 60 at 1:30 this morning to 32 at 6:20 when I got up. Went up town for milk & paper & med for Dad. I dropped in to see Mrs. Rogers a few minutes. QD’s all came over a few minutes for drawing knife and plane.
10. Cold. 30. Ice this morning. Sun out & nice. We went up town I wrote insurance and home by noon. I baked a custard pie. Cloudy late in the afternoon.
11. Sunday A very nice day. Dad & I went over by Ethel’s to see how Aunt Emma is doing and up to Uncle Doc’s a few minutes. Uncle Doc knew Dad as soon as he saw him. Up & got gas and milk and paper and home. Ate dinner and watched bowling and laid down to rest. Barty Wyatt came to see me about the lot that I sold Wendy Dove. Dad & I took him over and showed him the lot and home. Nobody came.
12. Cloudy and raining some. Cleared up. High Winds. I went up town and wrote insurance and went by to see Aunt Emma a few minutes. Home and loafed the rest of the day. I got in kindling - pine limbs. Dad went down under hill and it was hard for him to get back. It made him so weak and nervous.
13. Raining today. I went uptown. Dr. tested a specimen for Dad - still albumen in urine. Temp 50. I turned a shirt collar for Dad. Warm. Temp near 55. Raining at bedtime.
14. Temp 52. Very warm. Raining early. Just poured from 8:00 till 10:00.I went up town and wrote insurance policy and came home. Ate dinner and Dad and I went out and sat in the car where it was real warm. Wind so high. Sun warm. Temp 64. At 9:30, Jesse came to see Championship fight between Johnny Saxton & Carmen Bacillio. Saxton won 10 rounds. Dad could not go to sleep afterwards.

17. Colder. Snowing flurries most of the day.
18. Sunday Cloudy and spitting snow. Temp 30. Went up town and it was just pouring snow - - wet kind. About 3 inches is on. Thundered & lightning in the heights of the snow storm. I went by and saw Aunt Emma. At 2:00 another storm with 2-3 more inches. Harry & Eula came and left at 6:00. Finkleman got stuck in his back yard and had to get Basil Shumate’s boys to help get him out and the only way was to go through our gate and lot.
19. Snow flurries all day today. Temp 20 early this morning. Went uptown for milk & paper. Home and after dinner I started washing the ceiling and walls of the kitchen. New England states are snowed under. Cold tonight.
20. Temp 14. Snowed some during the night. Clear & sun bright. Cleaned rest of the kitchen.
21. Cold Temp 20. Snowed some.
22. Went to Princeton. Got linoleum and a kitchen cabinet for my dishes. Moved old cabinet in pantry out on back porch and one in the kitchen into the pantry. Cleaned everything.

25. Sunday A very nice day. I went up for milk & paper. Jesses came. I baked a custard pie. We went out for a drive and up to Harry’s and we all drove down around faculty hill - down and around the college and back. At 7:25 Uncle Hade & MaryLee & Jim came and left at 9:25.

27. I have 12 baby chicks.

30. Cold early. Ice. Went up town for milk and paper. Dad and I went up to Princeton. I bought myself a wheelbarrow - a small one.
31. Baked a custard pie. Dad and I went up town & loafed a while at the store. Very warm. At 6:00 we went to Quinzetta’s a while and home at 8:00.
April
1. Sunday A beautiful Easter morning. At 9:00 QD brought the girls over and I gave them a plate picture for Easter. I went up for milk & paper and at 11:00 Jesse and Mitzi came for her picture plate. We got in the car & drove over to Fred Ball’s a while. They are OK. Home at 4:00. At 6:50 Uncle Hade. MaryLee & Jim came. I made biscuits and coffee and warmed up the rest of the food and we all sat and ate and had a big visit.
2. Clear & warm early. I went & got me a lot of kindling. Dad & I went up town and Jesse wanted me to help Lodema in the store while he went to market. Samps took his brother Dewey to the hospital today – very sick. We came home at 12:30, got dinner and Samps and Sis came and ate a little. They left and I went back to help Lodema. I came home at 4:00. Raining and thundering and lightning at 8:30.
3. I started washing ceiling and walls of living room. Jesse called and I went over at 11:00 to help in store. Raining today. Home and washed the rest of room. Finished at 5:00. Looks so nice and clean. So tired. I put back all of the pictures and trinkets. Nobody came.
4. Raining today. Jesse called for me to help him and I did. Went back and helped until 4:00. Samps is with his brother, Lodema is sick so I have to help at store. Ethel, Dad and I went up to Harry’s at 6:30. Ethel wanted to see his new house.
5. I washed early and Jesse called for me to come & help. Dad went over with me. We went back and helped till 4:30. I sprinkled down clothes but too tired to iron so I didn’t. Everett Meador died today. Mrs. Cody Fletcher died suddenly this morning.
6. Up early. Ironed all of my clothes. Jesse called so I went and helped him in the store. Just pouring the rain all afternoon. I have a leak in my radiator - lost all of my juice. Harrys came and stayed for the fight.
7. Rain, thundered, hailed and sleeted after Dad and I got up town. I wrote insurance and helped Jessie a while and came home and got dinner. I went back and helped Jessie. Samps and Sis came. Everett Meador, Effie Wirtz’s brother, was buried today at Athens Cemetery. Funeral was in the Baptist Church. Snowing when I came home. Ground was white at 8:00 and still pouring. Temp 28.
8. Temp 26. Up early – snow just pouring down. I went to get milk & paper. Stopped to see Aunt Emma a few minutes. Laid down and slept a while. Snowed all day, sun shone and cold. Harrys came at 6:45.
9. Temp 26. Up at 6:00. Cloudy. Snowed some. Took car over to garage at 11:45 to get radiator fixed and went up and cleaned office for the Drs. Ennis came for me to help her in store for a while. Lizzie & Bill came to visit and left at 11:45 – wouldn’t stay for dinner. Fred Coburn brought me 6 ½ tons of coal today - $66.00. Cold all day.
10. Cloudy. Warming up some. I went up town for milk & paper and to store. Dad & I went down to college to see baseball game but field so wet, they moved it to Princeton. We stopped at the store for a while and home. No one came.
11. Rainy. Temp 36 early. Went up to office and did some typing for the Drs. and home. Mrs. Angelo Kessinger died this morning. Snowing and raining at 1:30. Temp 33.
12. Very nice day. Jesse took Lodema to Hinton hospital today. We went over & helped Samps in store. Ennis has Mimi and Mitzi to keep until Lodema comes home.
13. Nice this morning. I got some kindling in pine limbs. QD called and said that Hinton Hospital called for Jesse to come at once. Ennis went with him. Dad & I went over to help Samps in store. Operated on Lodema. Harry’s came over and stayed until after the fight.
14. Clear & a nice morning. I went up for milk & paper & wrote 1 ins. policy. Sis and I went to Hinton Hospital to see Lodema. Started to rain when we left & just poured all the way there and back. Home at 5:00. Mae Dove died today.
15. Raining this morning and most of the day. It poured at times. Showered some also. I went for milk & paper. Stopped to see Aunt Emma a few minutes. Jesse came over and ate dinner with us, then left for Hinton hospital to go and get Lodema and brought her home. Essie Bauguess came to buy my pine trees. Rained most all day. J. Henry Smith was found dead in his bed this morning. Harry’s came over.
16. Temp 40. Raining this morning. Up early. Got ready and went to Mae Dove’s funeral at Memorial Funeral Home at 11:00. Sleeted on me and snowed some as the funeral parade came to Athens. Snow flurries all day. Sun shone, rained---just did everything. Tornado in Alabama - over 17 dead and 200 hurt bad. Harry’s 3 came over.
17. Temp 32. Snowed during the night and still snowing this morning. Dad not so well this morning. I called Dr. V. at 10:45. Dr. says that he thinks his trouble is that there have been 2 deaths in town. J. Henry Smith was buried today. Harrys came over. Sis & Samps came also Ethel. Dad not doing too good. Slept all afternoon. Snow squalls all day.
18. Temp 30. Snowing this morning. Dad feeling some better I believe. Snow flurries most of the day. Nobody came.
19. Cold. Snowed again early today. I painted our bedroom today - spring green. Did a good job. Finished at 4:00. Ethel came at 4:30. I went for milk and paper at 5:30. Harry & Eula came over awhile.
20. Snowing at 6:20 when I got up. Ice. Cleaned rest of the bedroom this morning. QD came over a little while and told us that Ray Coburn had died last night. I went uptown and wrote one insurance policy. No more till next month. Got a letter and a package from MaryLee – dress towels and curtains and a poke of candy for Dad. Opie Meadows buried at Elgood today. We watched fight at 10:00. A good one.
21. Very nice day Temp 26. Went uptown for milk and paper. They did a veterans Ex paper for Dr. Lily. Went to funeral of Ray Coburn at Nazarene Church - full - and on to cemetery. Dad stayed at the store. Home. I watched wrestling from Oak Hill at 10:00. Good.
22. Sunday A cold morning but clear. We went up to Fred Rogers. He had gone for Ann. She is sick. Saw their new house - real pretty. At 9:00, Watson White & Louis came for us to go up and have dinner with them. Watson White’s birthday dinner. We couldn’t go. Harry’s came over at 2:00 and left at 4:30. Ate supper and Jessie’s all came and left at 7:30.
23. Up early at 6:00 and it rained and snowed during the night. Flat Top Mountain was white up till noon. I washed a big washing this morning and went and got my paper & milk and home. Ate dinner and ironed up all of my clothes. It has been a nice day. Jim Martin, John’s brother, died yesterday in Matoaka.

28. Hot - temp went up to 80’s. A very nice day. Cleaned yard some. Mowed at garage & back yard. Jessie called to come over and help him. Cleaned up house and planted another row of potatoes. We went down to college to see baseball game - Glenville & Concord. I baked a custard pie. Apple blossoms are bursting out - so pretty.
29. Sunday Went up town for paper and milk and stopped to see Aunt Emma & she was sick & I stayed there for a while. Came home & Uncle Hade & MaryLee & Jim was here. I got dinner and they went on to Rich Creek at 1:30. We drove uptown to cemetery and Jessie came hunting for us and came on over with ½ gallon of ice cream and we had a time eating it. Monroe Reed died yesterday at Elgood.
30. Raining early this morning - not much. Monroe buried today. Alben Barkley died suddenly giving a talk at Washington Lee College at 5:13 to a student body – Democrat.

1. Cool 50. I washed some of the front porch walls. Jesse called for me to come and help him a while. I went to office and washed windows in Dr. Vermillion’s office and home at 3:20. I washed some more on porch. A hard job but looks good.
2. Temp 50. Raining early this morning. I washed some more of the front porch again this morning. Jessie called for me to come over and help keep store for him to go and get Lodema. I went for her. The AEP boys came and checked my meter. I went up and cleaned Dr. Lilly’s windows – inside and out - and home at 3:30. Just poured the rain - 2 spells of it.
3. Very nice day. Went for Lodema. Washed on front porch again.
4. A 3 o’clock this morning, Aunt Emma called for me to come over. I went at 4:15 and got Ethel up & she came out. Had to spend the rest of the night with her. Harry & Eula came.
5. A fine day. Went up town at 11:00. I found my billfold gone. $70 in it. I hunted everywhere for it. We went to Dr. Lilly’s to see if I had left it on his desk Wednesday. Not there. Home and finally, I found it where I had put it when I went to Aunt Emma’s I guess. Hot today-80.
6. Sunday A fine day. Nice day. Went for paper and up to Fred Rogers awhile and home. Went by to see Aunt Emma and over to Jesse’s and down to QD’s and stopped at Lloyd’s a minute.

13. Sunday Hot today. A fine day. Went up cemetery & took flowers and up to Harry’s a few minutes and home. After dinner we laid down and went to sleep. Fred Rogers, Mrs. Rogers & Ann came over and visited a while & then took us up to their house for a while. Then home at 5:30. Harrys came and stayed a while. Made developer & fixer x-ray for Dr. Lilly at 4:30. Drs both gone.

21. Up early and washed. Cold tho and a few clouds. Samps and Quinzetta left early to hunt for his brother who left hospital in Huntington. Worked in the garden & covered up corn. Harry’s came over.
22. A very nice day early but cloudy and thundering and finally rained. I covered up beans & tomatoes and peppers, cabbage & cucumbers with sawdust. Also beans with straw. Laid down after dinner and slept till 4:45. Felt bad. Up and ironed all of my clothes.
23. A very nice day. I went to Princeton to get Dad’s medicine for him and home. Ethel told me that they had heard from Dr. about Aunt Emma and not much can be done for her. I am so sorry. I covered up my beans tonight also peppers & tomatoes and cucumbers as temp is getting low.
24. A frost and freeze today. Up early and mowed all of the yard - front and back. Took me all day. My corn is frozen to ground. It was so nice and big. Sis called and they got a message that his brother had been found in Point Pleasant in jail.
25. Mowed cemetery over at Tip’s. Mowed back to garden & chicken house and did a lot of things. Went up town and had Dad’s haircut and my neck trimmed. I wrote 1 policy and home. Quinzetta and Samps came over at 7:00 and left at 9:00. Samps went to Point Pleasant for his brother.
26. Cold this morning – no frost tho. Up and baked a custard pie and we went uptown a few minutes up and baked a custard pie and we went uptown a few minutes and home. Cleaned house in afternoon and dusted a few things. Ethel told me that Verena was going Sunday to bring Aunt Emma back to Pearisburg hospital. Harry & Eula came over a few minutes.
27. Sunday Cloudy. Warmer. Some wind high. Went up to cemetery and took some flowers. A bunch of Ben Wirtz’s girls, husbands and children were there. Home and watched ballgame. Showered a little. Verena brought Aunt Emma back to Pearisburg hospital. We drove up to Harry’s a little while and home.
28. Rained some today. I went to Princeton to courthouse and witnessed the opening of Mae Dove’s will. Just poured the rain. Home by 12:40. This evening, Harry’s came for a few minutes.

1. Cloudy most of the day. I went to office at 9:00 to help Dr. Lilly do a surgery. Wrote 2 ins. policies and got home at 11:45. I baked a date bar and cut weeds and worked in the garden some. Took flowers - peonies to cemetery and up to Harry’s a few minutes.

Went uptown to help Dr. Vermillion count his pills. Raining when I got home. Jesse came over awhile and fixed my refrigerator for me.
16. Raining a little. I went to Princeton early and got Dad’s new hat for Father’s Day tomorrow. Thundering and raining a good shower. We went over to Sis’s awhile and to Uncle Doc’s and home. The squirrels are doing fine. Been here 9 days now.

I put shavings in chicken house. Dr. & Mrs. Lilly left for 2 weeks to Lyllian, Doc’s and Mary Ann’s. Rained a sprinkle.

Went up to office at 1:40 and worked some. Jesse came at 7:00. Put belts on refrigerator and fixed a wire that was almost broken.
20. Up early. Temp 52. Cloudy. Samps & Sis came for my feather bed for her old bed. We dug for a groundhog at old chicken house but didn’t get it. Raining at 10:00 – hard. I worked at office for Dr. Lilly today. Jesses all came at 7:30 – left at 8:40. Raining.

QDs all came later. Harrys all came. Everybody was gone by 10:30. John Bailey’s tractor turned over on him - in hospital - seriously hurt.

1. Sunday A very nice day. Hot. Went up for paper and milk and over to Lacy Keatley’s at Speedway. Jesses came for a few minutes. Lacy’s funeral at 2:30 today. We didn’t go. I picked 10 quarts berries for Becky Jennings. Jesses came and picked berries – about 2 gallons.
2. I put dirt around my beans this morning. QDs came for berries but it rained them out.
3. A very nice day. Warm. I picked some berries this afternoon. QDs came later. Sis’s 3 came for berries & later Jessie’s came – all here together.
4. Clear & warm. Picked my first mess of green beans & cucumbers today. Went up for paper and milk & took Ethel 2 quarts of berries. We went up to Harry’s awhile. Nobody came till now 4:15. QDs came and it was pouring the rain. Groundhog dug out his hole in garden and ate cabbage again today. We ate our watermelon.
5. Cloudy some but hot. Samps and Sis came over. I put up 10 pints of cucumber pickles out of my garden this morning. Samps and I picked berries. Dad got so weak—too hot. I went over for milk and paper & meds for Dad’s bowels. A hard rain at 4:20. I tied up my tomatoes & staked my sunflowers – wind blew the over. Sis, Samps, Smith and Lacy came at 7:00 a few minutes. A good rain today.

11. Temp 58 this morning. Cold. Built a fire in cook stove. I put up 7 pints cucumber pickles this morning and we went uptown I cut the tops out of my raspberry canes new ones. 73 temp today. Rained in late evening.

1. I washed this morning. Dad & I went to the office and I wrote 3 ins policies. Drs. are in bank meeting. Varena Farley’s funeral and burial today. Dr. Lilly’s 3 girls and hus. came in today. NO RAIN. Went down to Dr. Lilly’s and got some apples. Jesse’s all came for a while.
2. I made 7 quarts of apple butter – 20 minute kind - today. Mowed yard. Pulled weeds out of strawberry patch after supper.
3. Raining a little this morning. I ironed all morning until 11:00. Went up town and took Dr. Lilly tomatoes & cabbage. Went down to QD’s a while and home. Harrys came over for fight.
4. A very nice day. Went uptown and up to Gautier’s with eggs and over to Harry’s for a while. Home and watched baseball. This evening we went up to Harry’s for a while.

I got dinner and we had a visit. They left at 4:00. I finished my beets. MaryLee said when she left that they would be up for us at 7:00 Friday morning to go to Traylee for the day.
8. A fine day – rather cold and foggy. Mrs. Uriah Vermillion fell in Bluefield and broke her hip. She had been to a cancer meeting with Dr. Klingensmith.

Raining at 4:00 and a lot of wind and thundering. We went up to Harry’s a few minutes. OJ Byrnside cut the apple trees in the alley in front of the new house that he is building.

21. Temp 50 this morning. & raining. Went up town and wrote 3 insurance policies. Ella Martin died yesterday - I heard this morning. I canned 5 quarts of apples. We watched the Rep. Convention tonight.
22. I washed early today. A cold morning. Temp 40 – 38 at Jennings Drug Store. Coldest morning ever for August. Went uptown and Jesse talked us into going on a picnic to Camp Creek Park. Samps, Sis & Jesses and Dad & I. Jennings mowed rest of hay down for Basil White. Basil White & boys were here when we came in putting up field in front of house. Mrs. Charlie Noble and Ella Martin buried today. We watched the convention in San Francisco. They nominated Nixon for Vice President and Eisenhower for President. Every state went for them.
23. Temp 56. Went uptown. Left my canning to have a tailpipe put on and have my car tested for another year. Basil here early to put up the rest of the hay – 3 big stacks. I ironed today. Our squirrel came back today – been gone for 6 days. Rep. Convention finished up today.
24. Temp 60. Clear and pretty this morning. Basil White came back today and put up rest of hay.
25. A fine day, Cool today. I went to Princeton to get Dad’s prescription filled – kidney tablets. We went over town made solution for Dr. Lilly x-ray. Home. We went over to QD’s awhile. Home at 7:30.
26. Sunday A fine day. Clear. I went up for milk & paper. Stopped at Lloyd’s doll house. He and Sally were putting down tile blocks on floor. Dr. Lilly came over for a while and as he left Harry’s 3 came and as they left Fred Rogers 3 came and as they left Ethel came. She left at 7:10. We ate supper and we were tired.
27. Raining this morning. I went up to office and helped Dr. Lilly make x-rays and develop them for Mrs. Walt Klingensmith. I went back and helped Dr. Lilly run over gums of her 2 lower wisdom teeth. I wrote ins. policy.
28. Rained some. I canned 5 quarts of applesauce this morning. Cool today. I went over to Quinzetta’s a while and on up to get milk and paper and took 2 doz Garnet. eggs & home. Mrs. Lida Caperton and Helen came to visit us for a while after supper.
29. I took up apples in back yard and mowed some of the grass. I washed and waxed my car this afternoon.
30. A fine day. Canned 5 qts. applesauce this morning. Temp 80. Mowed part of yard & garage. Raked up apples. Wind & rain some. Jesse came over a few minutes.
31. A very nice day. Went uptown & wrote 3 policies – 2 new ones. QD came over. Lots of trouble in the south over the colored people in several states. Harrys came over and stayed till after the fights.

1. A cool day. Went uptown for milk & paper. QD came over. Real mad over colander - trying to get it home. We caught a big bug on the porch and put it in a can. Raining tonight.
2. Raining. We took the bug up to QD to see. Fern and Kay knew what it was _ a praying mantis. We had never seen one. Stayed home all day and nobody came. Cold. Dad built a fire late this evening.
3. Labor Day, Cool. Temp 58. Clear. Took up apples and mowed under the apple trees in back yard. QD came over at 10:00. We went uptown & up to Harry’s and while there saw a motorcycle wreck. Boy & girl in front of Neeley’s and Scott’s. Eula, Maxine and I ran out to them. Not hurt much. QD came out and got a bushel of tomatoes – nice ones. We watched 2 red legs baseball games. Milwaukee won 1 and the red legs won one. Cold and had to build a fire again today.
4. I went uptown for milk and paper & wrote ins. A quarrel at the store - QD, Sis, Samps and Jesse. Dad was sorry that it was at the store. QD came over. I put cement roofing on porch. Raining late.
5. Up early & washed. My birthday. Went uptown a few minutes. Home and ironed everything. Took up apples and mowed back lawn. At 9:00, QD came over before he went to work. Raining.
6. Raining hard today. I canned 2 quarts of applesauce. My porch top leaked.
7. Rained some this morning. I went uptown for milk and paper. Ennis & QD came over. Harry & Eula came and stayed till after fight.
8. Temp 46.Cold today, all day. Went uptown and wrote 1 ins. policy. Dr. Vermillion in Bluefield to Shriners. Harry’s 3 came. Maxine and her baby were with them. Theresa has grown so much and talks good.
9. 44 Cold. A very nice day. I went up for paper and milk and up to filling station. A front tire was low with the valve leaking. Shumate put in a new one so it is okay. We watched Cincinnati Red Legs play St. Louis. 14 innings and St. Louis won 4 to 5. Ennis called at 3:00 for us to come over and eat supper with them. At 4:45 Mary Rogers came over. Her first time and we were so glad to see her. At 5:30, Fern called for us to hurry so Mary left & we went over for supper. Jesse came at 8:00 and left at 8:45.
10. A very nice day. Temp 46. I dug my potatoes this morning. They were very nice – 3 to4 bushels. Went up for milk & paper and home. Picked up our potatoes and brought them up into the yard & washed them and put them away. Hardy Martin was found dead at 7:00 this morning by Glen Sloan. Smoke coming out of the house as he drove by to work. He broke in and found Hardy on bed dead. He drug him out of the house. His bed was on fire and Hardy was burned from his waist down and his arms and hands.
11. Warmer this morning and a nice day. Ennis & QD came over and got a lot of my corn to can. I went up town and out to Charlie Martin’s for a few minutes and back to office and did some insurance and home. We dressed and went up to the cemetery for the burial of Hardy Martin at 3:00 – not over 10 out of town at cemetery. Temp nearly 70 today. Clear & bright all day.
12. I went uptown & wrote insurance. Dr. brought Mrs. Vermillion home from the hospital today.
13. Went and got my milk & paper and home. A nice day. Started painting roof of house. Could not get anyone to do it. Hot - near 80. Harry’s came and when they left a cow with a white face was here. Harry took her out. Was up till 11:30 and ran out 3 more cows.
14. Up early and 3 cows were in our garden eating my corn at 7:30. Charlie Lane and a boy were in the garden getting them out. Painted some more on my roof until I give out. Raining late at 7:30.
15. At 1:20 AM this morning the cows came back and I called Lane to come and get them. At 8:30, 4 cows came back. Dad drove them up on Broadway. I called Gypsy to come and get them. They ate all of my corn. We watched baseball on TV. At 3:30 we went over town for a while. Raining tonight – thunder and lightning over a long period.
16. A very nice day rather cool. I went down to see Mrs. Vermillion a few minutes. Paper & milk & home. We watched baseball on TV until Fred Rogers, Mrs. Rogers & Fred David came. When they left we started up to Harry’s & they were at Alice Lee’s so we stopped there and home at 5:15.
17. A very nice day. Went up to the office to help Dr. Lilly take a full mouth of x-rays – develop them & home. Finished up my roof painting - all of it all by myself. Raining hard at 4:30. Thunder and lightning. Tired.
18. Cold today. Temp 52 at 7:30. I washed this morning. Went uptown for mail, paper & milk. Ironed everything this afternoon. I mowed some of the lawn. Temp never got above 62. Chilly - may frost tonight.
19. A cold day. I went to Princeton for feed, groceries and vaccine for Dr. Vermillion. Back by noon.
20. Cold today. Dad and I went up and had Lytton trim our hair.
21. Temp 30. A big frost & lots of ice. Our first frost. We went to see football game down at the college. Tickets $3.00. Concord lost – played on the new field. Hot.
22. Warmer today. Cloudy some. I went for milk and paper and home. I put paint on porch roof in back & cellar roof so now I have finished painting the whole roof of the house. Am I glad sure was a hard job but I got it done.
23. Sunday A little warmer. Went for paper & milk. Jesse and Mitzi came and left at 12:00. Ate dinner and Harry’s 3 came. We picked 4 bushels if Johnson Winter apples. Lizzie and Bill came. Raining and all gone by 5:00. Ethel came at 6:00 and told us that Mrs. Donahoe, Mrs. James Oxley’s mother, was found dead in bed and also the baby that Betty Mays had was found dead in bed at 7:00.
24. Cool early this morning. Went uptown early and cleaned up the office for the Drs. and home at 11:30. Went back to Aunt Emma’s and they called the doctor at hospital in Clifton Forge and was told that Mr. Frazier was bad. They left by way of Hinton and was told by his nephew he left 20 minutes early for Athens and was home when they got back. PL Vest came down to find my water meter. We went up on the hill and found it covered in dirt and grass. Had not been read for a year. I harvested my sunflowers and put them in storage. Harrys came.
25. A very nice day. We went up to office and Dad had his cold shot. I got mine yesterday. We took out 4 teeth for Dr. V. and home.]
26. Raining this morning. Took up apples in back. Ennis called for me to go down to see Mrs. Vermillion with her. We left at 10:30. Misted rain all afternoon. I split some kindling.
27. Temp 44 to 47 today. Rained all night. Dr. Lilly said rainfall 2.04 inches during night. Went for milk and paper and home. Cleaned and waxed kitchen floor and opened drain in road up to gate. Rained all day.

1. Up early. I washed. Went uptown for milk & paper. I ironed up everything & took up apples.
2. I went uptown & wrote insurance & cleaned office for Drs. Raining today.
3. Cline Motor’s burned last night. Went uptown early and cleaned hall and steps for Drs. As I came home, Sally told me that Roy Oxley fell off of cliff and died. We watched first game of World Series –Brooklyn Dodgers vs. New York Yankees. Dodgers won. We went up to Lloyd’s a few minutes. Roy Oxley fell or jumped over cliff down at Brush Creek Falls early this morning – wife and kids were with him.
4. Up and I went to Princeton to courthouse assessor’s office to try for the third time to get the farm transferred to me. Dad deeded it to me in 1954. Dad and I went over to Roy Oxley’s a few minutes. Just pouring rain. Harry and Eula came. We all went over to QD’s to read the Sunset News about Roy.
5. Temp 58. Raining this morning. I went uptown and got paper. State Police are looking for a man who has left town connected with stealing a safe. We watched second ballgame of World Series - Dodgers won 13 – Yankees 8. Rained all day. Sun never shone all day. Dr. Vermillion said Mrs. Vermilion got up for 30 minutes yesterday.
6. A very nice day. We watched World Series today. New York won. Harrys came over and Jesses all came. Jesses left at 10:30.
7. A fine day. We went up for milk and paper and on up to Harry’s. We went out to Brush Creek Falls where Roy fell off cliff and on down to see Lennie Houchins to see his new house. Watched World Series - New York won. We went over to Ethel’s at 4:00. She was going to a church meeting so we came home.
8. Frost this morning. A fine day. I went uptown cleaned the office and waxed Dr. Lilly’s floors & home. Temp 35. Frost. Watched World Series won - a perfect game. Larsen pitching. I took up leaves in back yard & mowed grass. Worked till dark. Ethel came over awhile.
9. A fine day. Warmer. I took up apples and leaves in back yard and mowed. Went uptown & home. Watched World Series - Brooklyn won 1-0 in 11th inning. Fixed back porch & roof on front porch. It leaks a little & mowed at garage & raked up leaves in front yard. Tired. Nothing new about stolen safe.
10. Temp 35. Went uptown after milk and paper. Dad took up 5 sacks of leaves while I was gone. A Mrs. Williams called From Princeton and wants to see my table. S.L. McGraw went home and found his wife dead. Harry & Eula came over and stayed for fight.
11. Cold this morning. Went uptown and home. Paper said that they had picked up a truck and a suspect in the stolen safe case. The safe was stolen from the airport. Just loafed this afternoon waiting on the lady to come and look at the table and buffet. I got it at Redman’s sale - 3 came but didn’t take it. I mailed MaryLee a birthday cake today – her birthday is October 12th.
12. Frost this morning. Temperature low all day. Went by office and wrote an insurance policy. MaryLee birthday is today. Mrs. S.L. McGraw’s buried today. I baked an applesauce cake tonight. Quinzetta and Samps came over for a few minutes. First time since back in August.
13. Cool early. A fine day. Sun bright. We went up to office and helped Dr. Lilly fill teeth for Pierce Anderson’s girl. We watched a football game. I baked an apple pie this morning. Nobody came.
14. Sunday Cool early but sun hot. We went up to Fred Rogers a few minutes. Ate dinner and went up to Harry’s & got them. We went out to Bill Shepherd’s a little while. Lizzie had been sick and in the hospital. Home at 4:30. Nobody came.

18. A fine morning. I went to Princeton to get Dad’s medicine - capsule - & other business. Bought me a steel trap. We went up to Sally’s to see machine grind up limbs cut out of AEP power lines. Temp hit 70 at 3:00. No one came.

20. Cloudy. I went to Princeton to an auction sale. Got 6 plates and 6 oatmeal dishes - restaurant style – and home at 12:15. Watched a football game on TV and then took up leaves that Dad had raked up while I was in Princeton. Homecoming football game down at college. Concord lost 27-0. Warmer a lot.
21. Cloudy and raining a little this morning. I went and got paper and milk 7 home. Dressed to go up to Harry’s for dinner. Lizzie & Bill are coming to Harry’s also. At 11:00 in came Uncle Hade, MaryLee and Jim so we had to stay home. I got dinner for us then went for a drive to the college and to the top of Oakvale Mountain. Back home and they left at 3:30. We went on up to Harry’s and explained to them why we didn’t get there. MaryLee brought me a pair of red shoes.
22. Cloudy most of the day. I went uptown and fixed some insurance papers and home. Ate dinner & Dad took the wagon sheet back to Jessie’s and on up to the cemetery. Took out some weeds and the plot looks good. Home and took up several leaves at 4:00. Thundering and lightning late this evening.

27. Temp 46. Dad went uptown this morning. First time in nearly 2 months. Aunt Emma called for me while I was in Ethel’s store. I went down there and she was a nervous wreck – crying and scared. I went back to tell Ethel to take her away. She sent 2 blankets out here for me to keep for her. We watched a football game. I went over to Sis’s at 3:15 for a few minutes. No one came.
28. Warmed up some. Went up to see Alice Lee a few minutes and got paper & milk. Over to Jesse’s a while and home. We watched a football game. At 3:15 we went up to Lloyd’s a while. At 6:15 Harry, Eula and Max came. Left at 9:00. Cloudy.
29. Temp 47. Cloudy all day. Went uptown and cleaned office for the Drs. and wrote one insurance policy and home. QD came over and we took off two front casings of his car and did a lot of practice shooting. Ethel came and we all did some shooting. Fern came for a false face. Raining at 5:30.

1. Raining hard this morning. Temp 52. I went up and wrote 2 insurance policies and home. Cleaned living room and watched TV.
2. Cloudy & raining. Went uptown and wrote 2 insurance policies. Carey Goode died from a heart attack. Was taken to hospital about 2:00 Saturday morning. Harry’s came over.
3. Cloudy early and foggy. I went uptown & home. Dr. Vermillion went to Duke for ballgame. Dad and I went to sale of the Barrett property. I bid in the home. Perry Martin got the filling station. Nice and warm.
4. Sunday Clear & warm. Jesse & Mitzi came early. Fred and Mrs. Rogers came. Harry’s 3 came. All gone by 12:30. We went up to cemetery to burial of Carey Goode. Nice & warm. Ethel went with us.
5. Up early and washed a 3 weeks washing. A fine day. Went uptown for milk & paper. We took up all the leaves all around the place. Worked all afternoon on them. Rained a little bit.
6. A fine day. Election Day – a big day. I ironed this morning. We went uptown for a while. I voted and loafed a while and home. Harrys came for a few minutes. I was up till election named Eisenhower for president again.
7. A fine day. Eisenhower won in 41 states & Stevenson got 7. West Va got a Republican governor Cecil Underwood. First time in 24 years. Marland got beat for Senate by Reeves Combs. Ike got 9 million more votes than Stevenson. Boy! Stove pipe in kitchen went bad. Mrs. Lillie Daniel buried at 3:00 today.
8. I have a cold. A nice day. We laid down and slept from1:45 till 3:30. Raining some. Colder a lot – raining. Temp 38.
9. Snowing this morning – first snow. Temp 28. Snow showers on till noon. I went over to Mrs. Lyda Caperton’s and took her some sunflower seeds. On up for milk & paper & mail & home. I brought over our potatoes and put them in the basement and brought in flowers and put them in the cellar. Harry and Eula came over for a while. First snow of the season.
10. Cloudy. Temp 28. Cold. Went uptown to office and home. Dr. Vermillion in Charleston today. Baked 2 apple pies and watched football game. Mrs. Dale Thompson died suddenly in Bluefield Sanitarium. Gave Dad a bath & shaved him.
11. Cold this morning but clear. We went up to Alice Lee’s a while and on up to Harry’s and home. Watched football game. At 3:00 we went over to see Ethel for a few minutes. She is sick. Home and found Uncle Hade and MaryLee all here. They had unlocked the door and were watching TV. They came along at 4:05 and we got back at 4:45. I got supper – made cheese sandwiches and pie, cake and coffee. Harrys came at 7:30. Uncle and MaryLee left at 8:05. Mr. Fountain Sumner died today.
12. Temp 30. Clear and wind high. Ice this morning. I went down to see Mrs. Vermillion a few minutes – her birthday today. I went up to Dale Thompson’s a few minutes. Back to office and Verena Nestor called for me to go down and see Frazier. Mrs. Dale Thompson was buried today. He is sick & his niece was there taking him to the hospital. I called Verena back and told her. Ethel is in the hospital in Bluefield. At 4:45 Uncle Hade, MaryLee and Jim came. Boys to hunt a while but boy how cold and wind really high. They left at 7:00. Aunt Emma & Hobart came for a few minutes from Pearisburg.
13. Cold with ice this morning. We went uptown and I wrote 5 ins policies. Home by 11:45. Aunt Emma went in thru a window and took over the house again. Mr. Fountain Sumner buried today. I went over to Aunt Emma’s a few minutes and on over to see Mimi. She has been real sick. Cold.
14. A fine day. Nice & warm. Went uptown and got milk and paper and home. Dad & I took up leaves all over font yard & part of back. Mr. Winfrey called and said that a bid of $5000 above me on Barrett property. We took up leaves all day. Ethel is still in hospital in Bluefield. Pains in her chest, shoulder and arm.
15. Worked in backyard trimming trees and sweeping up leaves and also on outside of yard. Warm and a nice day. Mr. Hopkins came and said that I got the Barrett property. Court refused his bid. Fred Cooper called me and also told me. Dad & I went uptown to see Fred. At 5:45, Harrys came to tell us that we got the house. Later Jesse’s family came. All gone at 9:15. Wind high.
16. Temp 36. Raining this morning. Up early and went to Princeton to give check for the Barrett property. Home by noon. We got the keys to the house. Dad and I went up a few minutes to look house over and got some apples. Stopped to talk with Dr. Uriah. Went by to see Aunt Emma as we went to Princeton. QD and family came over for a while.
17. Raining. Temp 33. Cold. Misted all morning. I went by to see Aunt Emma and on over to get Ennis and kids and went up and showed them the house. Back to office and wrote 2 insurance policies. Home by noon. Baked 2 pies and watched ballgame on TV. Called Ethel in Bluefield Sanitarium and talked to her.
18. Sunday A fine day. Not to cold. Went over to see Aunt Emma a few minutes. Got milk and paper and home. We ate dinner and watched ballgame. Harry & Eula came. They left by 4:20. We went up and showed them our new home and came home.
19. Clear. Temp 24 and cold & frosty. Up and I washed and went uptown to get the Drs. to help me make a decision about moving to our new home. Dad & I went up and took up leaves in yard and mowed part – all in front and back to gate and home at 4:00. Warm & clear today. Robert Ransom Hopkins died in Cutwright house which he bought back in the spring.
20. Cloudy - some frost. I ironed this morning. Went by to see Aunt Emma and on for milk & paper and home. Men surveyed the lot at the filling station this morning. Dad and I went up to Barrett house to pick up apples out of the yard and took up some of the leaves. James Barrett’s wife came to see me. She wants me to let her take the house back. Ethel to come home today. Raining at 5:30.
21. Cloudy this morning. Not so cold. I went uptown to see Ethel. She is fine. On up to office and wrote 2 insurance policies and home. Ate dinner and we went up to new home to wash windows. I did them all downstairs – doors and all. Bertha Thompson came by to see us and also Fred Coburn. Raining hard awhile after we got there and on till 6:00. We came home at 3:45. Ransom Hopkins funeral and burial today at 2:00.
22. Snowing. Temp 24. Blew snow all day. Thanksgiving Day. No one came to see us. We were invited over to QD’s to supper. Dad sick today - bowels bad – so we did not go. I packed dishes and we watched TV – ballgame.
23. Temp 14 & snowing – just a little. Called gas company to come and put in heat. Water froze in Barrett house – not drained. Plumber to come at 1:30. I wrote insurance on Barrett house this morning - $ 10,000 ins. Harry & Eula came and left at 9:30. Temp 18.
24. Snowing some all day. Temp 14 above. I went up and unlocked the house so plumbers could get in. I wrote 2 insurance policies. Dad sick today – bowels bad. I packed a lot today. Went up to new home and locked up. Men did not come to finish. Mrs. Fred Rogers called for us to come up and have dinner tomorrow with them. Temp 18 at bedtime. Silas White died at Northfork WVa yesterday – First cousin.
25. Temp 10 at 7:30. Cloudy but cleared up a lot. Went up and checked on house. Got milk & paper & home. Packed some and watched football game. Went over and got Ethel and took her up to see our house. She likes it a lot. Home. Temp stayed at 30 all day. Nobody came.
26. Temp 22. Spitting snow all day. No sun. Went up to house and back to the office and wrote insurance and home. I loaded the car & took up a lot of things. Home at 3:20.
27. Temp cold and snowing. I made arrangements to move tomorrow. Harrys came & Jesses came.
28. Cold but clear. Jennings truck, Harry drove Jessie’s truck, JE Pettrey, Gene Pennington, & Tracy helped and brought us up in 2 trips. We ate dinner ate the house. Eula had things put where I wanted them and I stayed over at the old house. Everything went just fine. Quinzetta stopped as she went from school. We moved from the farm today.

1. A very nice day. Working hard trying to get things straightened up. Jesse is moving into his new store. Mrs. Bud Shumate died in Victoria Virginia at the home of her daughter Ruth.
2. Sunday A fine day – cold and windy. Jesse and Mitzi came at 9:30. Ethel stopped and wanted us to go to Verena’s with her to see Aunt Emma’s. I went for milk and over to the house & Lacy Alvis stopped in for a few minutes. Dad and I went over to the house in the afternoon for a few minutes. Doc and Lula stopped in a few minutes – tickled with our new house. Helen Caperton dropped in a few minutes.
3. A very nice day – cold tho. I washed early and went over to house and brought a lot of my canned goods over from cellar and potatoes. Dad and I went down to Bud Shumate’s a few minutes at 11:45. At 2:30, the funeral and burial of Mrs. Bud Shumate. Jesse’s family came this evening and later Harry and Eula came. All gone at 9:20.
4. Up early. A nice day. Not so cold. I went to Princeton to Sears Roebuck Co for my shades and curtains – should get them this Friday afternoon. We went down and I wrote insurance. Dad stopped at the store and watched men remove trees out of school yard and then we went on over to house and loaded up again. Home at 4:00.
5. A fine day. Sis stopped by.
6. Ennis came this afternoon and helped take down shade brackets and am ready for my shades and curtains.
7. A very nice day. Harry’s came and brought Dad a rabbit and squirrel dressed. Went to Princeton & got my shades and curtains. Harry came after supper and put up all shades and curtains downstairs. Then we watched the fight.
8. A very nice day. Sis came up and told me that the ladies from the Baptist Church were giving us a housewarming. Ed Wirtz came up a while. Harry, Eula and Max and put up shades and curtains upstairs. Eula knew about the party and came at 6:30. Ennis came at 6:00 to keep me home. At 7:30, here came Mrs. Wells & Violet Bailey and later Helen and Lida Caperton, Mrs. Lane & Gypsie, Mrs. Finkleman, Ethel, Levi and Charlotte Scott, Dr. V. and Mabel. Ora Peters, Mrs. Fogg, Carl Bailey and Wells, Virgie and US and Dr. and Mrs. Lilly.
9. Sunday A very nice day. We went over to farm home. Samps and Sis stopped by a few minutes. Harry, Eula and Max came.
10. Up and washed. Cold all day. Went down and wrote some insurance. Jessie came up and took us over to farm.
11. A very nice day. Went to Princeton and paid plumber and AE Power Co. Nobody came.
12. A very nice day. Warmer a lot. Went over to farm. QD & Ennis came over while we were there. Raining this afternoon.
13. Rained some today but not cold. Cleaned and waxed bathroom. Went over to farm and Sis went with me.
14. Raining today a lot – warm in the 50”s. We went to gym to see Hi School beat Matoaka and watched fight after we got home.
15. Foggy a sight till noon. Went down town and over to farm & fed chickens and home. Temp in 50’s.
16. Cold but clear. We went down for milk and paper and back. Jesse and Mitzi were here to go over to get the chickens that I sold him. Oh I hate this place. We went up to Harry’s a few minutes & while we were gone Roy & Margaret from Hinton came. Harry’s came after supper for a while.
17. Up & washed. Clear & cold tho – Temp 24. We went down to store & loafed a while. I ironed. Lemuel Southern stopped by a few minutes. Later Lemuel & Jr. & Vanrena’s boy came back and visited with us. Raining when they left.
18. Cold. Temp 28. A big frost. Clear most of the day. I went down to office and cleaned up for the doctors and wrote insurance till after Christmas. I went to Princeton a few minutes shopping back by 3:15. Hi school ballgame – we forgot it - didn’t go. Harry and Eula came and left at 8:45.
19. Cold early today. We went down for milk and paper and mail. Home by 11:45. I baked an applesauce cake this afternoon. I wrapped Christmas packages tonight and watched fight – Dad & I.
20. Went down and wrote insurance. Raining.
21. Raining some. Went to Princeton shopping in afternoon. Watched fight.
22. Raining some. QD came at 7:30. He had been out to cemetery. Dad still in bed. Went downtown in afternoon. Samps and Sis came on way to Florida but they had not cut off water or done anything in case of cold spell.
23. Sunday Cold but clear. I went down for paper and milk. Went out to farm and Basil White & family was just leaving. Stopped by QD’s a few minutes and home. Nobody came.
24. Very nice day this morning. Dad and I went to Princeton to exchange his shoes for larger ones. Princeton full of cars. I went down for paper and milk and mail. I got a package from MaryLee. I got an unexpected Christmas card. Raining all afternoon. At 5:45 I went out to deliver Christmas presents to QD’s, down to Ethel’s and over to Jesse’s. Drove down to college to see Christmas lights.
25. Cold. Snowed some during the night. Temp 20. Cloudy most of the day. Santy very good. Harry came & Jesses came. We went up to Harry’s for a turkey dinner. Home at 3:00. I went over to the house for eggs and to feed the chickens. 9 eggs. I got $65.oo cash for Xmas. Nobody came. Temp 18 at bedtime.
26. Temp 20. Cloudy some. I went down and wrote 2 ins policies and home. Fred Rogers, Elvie and Ann came for a little while. Harry’s 3 coming for supper with us. Clyde White, Virginia and Libby also ate with us. All gone at 11:00. Dead tired. Clyde and Virginia brought me a nice aluminum baking pan.
27. Cold. Raining some. Wrote insurance. There were lots of fire crackers shot at Lane’s filling station tonight.
28. Temp 20. Boy, cold. Snowed some. I went to Princeton for groceries and feed for the chickens. Sam Holdren shot Blake White in leg while hunting a day or so ago. Took feed over for chickens. Dad loafed at store. Cold and raining.
29. Temp 18. Snowing and blowing. Wind high all day. Could not keep the house warm. Wrote insurance this morning. I baked a custard pie and am ready for dinner tomorrow. Temp 14 at 6:30. Snowed all day. Harry & Eula came for a while and left at 9:00.
30. Sunday Temp 13. Snowing yet, Snowed a lot during the night. Up early. Sis and Samps & Jessie’s family ate dinner with us. All gone at 2:45 and then Uncle Hade, MaryLee and Jim came so I had to fix dinner all over again. They left at 5:00. They loved the house. I then went over and fed the chickens & watered them. Home and washed the dishes & am I tired again tonight. Temp 22 at 7:45.
31. Temp 32. Sun out. A nice day. Wind high. Melting. Went down to see Mrs. Vermillion a few minutes. Stopped at office a minute on the way home. Went over to the farm and got 6 banty eggs. Dad went along. Stopped at the store a few minutes and home.
