Postwar prosperity as products got bigger and better, especially cars and television sets. Soap Operas began. Russia developed the nuclear bomb, which increased Cold War tensions.

12. Dad & I went to see Uncle Bert this afternoon. Real sick. Rosa Oxley died this afternoon - 4:30.


13. Went to McComas. Came home early. Sis took us & Quincys over to see Uncle Bert at 6:30.


14. A fine day. Uncle Bert had a complete stroke at 8:00 tonight.


15. Uncle Bert died at 2:50 this morning. I went to Rosa Oxley’s funeral. Dr. J. Frank Marsh died at 4:30. Quincys & Dad & I went over to Uncle Bert’s after supper- in jeep.


16. A fine day. Just like summer. Went to Uncle Bert’s at 10:00. Brought his body in at 10:30. Large crowd there all day. We came home at 4:00. Went for Lizzie at 6:00. Uncle Hade & folks came. Uncle Hade & Lizzie stayed all night with us.


17. Raining this morning. Left at 12:00 for Elgood to funeral & burial of Uncle Bert. A large crowd there. Church full. Rained all day. Came home, got supper. Bill came for Lizzie at 7:00. Marylee and Webb came for Uncle Hade- had to get supper for all of them.


18. Raining & colder. Dr. Marsh’s funeral at 1:00 in library & buried in Princeton.

22. A very nice day, Temp high. No snow so far this month.


23. Went to SS & church. Had to leave - coughing. Went over to see George Thompson awhile in afternoon & down to Quincy’s.

25.Temp 50. Raining today. Went to McComas today - only lost 1 day coming over here by snow on road- was Dec. 30th.


26.Temp 54. Raining today all day. Went home and put out my washing. Ironed all things that got dry. Got to bed at 9:45.


27.Temp 52 at 6:30 this morning. Raining most of the day. No snow so far during January. Quinzetta came out at 7:00- stayed until 11:30. We really had a lot of fun. 


28.A fine day. Robins just thick. Temp high in the sixties. Wind high tho. Got my partial teeth to wear to keep me from closing my teeth together & grating them. I ironed after supper. Grover Bolin died at R.A. Martin’s this afternoon.


28. Raining some today & snow blowing also. Not too bad. Dr. Lilly operated on my two front teeth today “drilled” out all dead bone between them. Went out to R.A. Martin’s after supper & down to Quincy’s. No pain after the medicine left.


30. Temp 10 above. Cold & cloudy, Went to SS & church, up to Doc’s for dinner. Had a big time. Quincy’s came out at 6:00. Left at 8:30. Snowing hard around 7:00 and still at 9:30.


31. Temp 24. Snowing during night & sleeted some. Slick. I did not try cat- walked out. QD came out. Cold all day. Melting a lot.


February


1. Temp 24 this morning. Slick as can be. Earl Holdren died this morning in Princeton. Left for McComas at 10:00. Slick from Giatto on over the hill. Quinzetta came out. Stayed until 9:00.


2. Temp 14 this morning. Sun out early. Groundhog can sure see his shadow. QD is going to buy Parker Alvis’s house. He don’t like over at Peterstown- sick of it. We went to see Hinton play Athens Hi at gym. Athens beat Hinton bad.


3. Temp 14 this morning. Drs. Lilly & Vermillion gone to Princeton to Boyd Humphrey’s & Bobby Neely’s trial. Postponed until April term of court because Emmett Martin in Japan. Dr. Lilly called me at 12:15 to come to Princeton and get them. Dr. Vermillion’s car went bad. Sun bright all day. Went out to Quincy’s after supper awhile. Earl Holdren buried at Elgood at 11:00 this morning. Uncle Bert’s will was probated in court this morning. Made 1-1-49. Raining as we came home from Quincy’s.

6. A fine day. We went to SS & church. Wells came out after dinner. Dr. Meador, Lula, Mayme, Mr. & Mrs. Funk came up. Blaine Jennings came out to adjust radio. Stayed home after supper.


7. A fine day. Dr. Lilly went to Charleston yesterday to meet on Medical & Dental school. I cleaned windows today. A fine day. I put out a washing after supper and went up to see Aunt Emma & Verena. Dad & I got home at 10:00.


8. A fine day. I went to see Dr. Ben Bird about my eyes. Got new glasses with bifocals in them. Dr. Lilly came home this afternoon. Dr. Lilly lost a new calf. QD came out after supper with the kids. Dad & I went to Hi School ballgame at gym, Pineville & Athens. We won.


9. A fine day. Cooler a lot. I ironed tonight.


10. Temp 24. Snowing & raining today. Dr. Lilly & I went through Bluefield to see collector of Internal Revenue man. On to McComas. Raining hard, turning to snow. Just poured for a while.


11. Temp 13 this morning. Warmed up a lot. Lots of robins flying around here for three weeks. Went up to see Aunt Emma awhile after supper.


12. Temp 26. Cloudy some. Took Willie White to hospital at 12:30 – just alive.


13. A fine day. Went to SS & church. After sinner Dad & I went over to see Aunt Flora awhile and home. Verena called may take Aunt Emma to hospital. I went right over and we called ambulance & sent her. She has pneumonia.


14. A fine day. Still warm. Temp up in the 60’s today. Went out to Quincy’s awhile after supper. Ennis & kids there. They & Sis went to the show soon after we got there.


15. Raining today. Temp went to 67 in Bluefield. We came to McComas at 3:05. Just pouring the rain. Went to gym Big Creek beat Athens High 68-60. Still raining but cooler.


16. Temp 47 this morning. Cloudy & raining some. Willie White still living but very bad.

20. A fine morning. Looks like rain. Went to SS & church. Dr. & Mrs. Vermillion left for Florida. Bernice Gore came at 2:00 to spend the night. Had Quincy’s out for supper. Quincy’s birthday.

22. Cloudy some this morning. Going to McComas. Raining when we got home. Hailed hard for a little while. Went to gym to see high school lose to Greenbrier.


23. Cloudy & cold. Willie White died at 11:40 in hospital. Went home and washed. Went to SS meeting at 7:00, home and ironed.


24. Cloudy most of day. A big frost. Temp 22. Went to gym Princeton Hi played Athens High. Score 66-65 in favor of Princeton. A nerve-breaking game. 1017 people there. Gym just packed. Ironed after I got back.


25. Cloudy. Wind high. Willie White’s funeral in Methodist church. Went to church at 7:30 to see Ella Nash Jarrell choir sang for 1 hour. Very nice.


26. A fine day. We worked the hardest today in many a day. Dad & I went to Princeton shopping & to see Elgood Hot Shots play Cleveland Clowns basketball. Beat Elgood by 12 points. They had one man 8 feet tall.


27. Cloudy. Went to SS & church. Stayed home. Dad went out to Quincy’s awhile. At 5:30 we went up to see Aunt Emma. Snowing. Just pouring soon after we got there. Turning to rain soon after we got home.


28. Temp 27. Snow and blowing. Wind high. Ground just barely covered. Snow squalls off and on all day. Colder. Temp at bedtime was 16 above and snowing.


March


1. Temp 9 above. Snowing & Blowing. Fire out in bank building. Temp 46 when I came over. We did not go to McComas. Dr. Lilly & Fred Cooper was out all day trying to make arrangements for a new gas furnace in bank. Went to Elgood to see Ray Cheatwood, Klingensmith & CH Houchins and “Gene” Lawrence.


2. Cold this morning. Temp 16 this morning. Still no heat in bank. We had to cancel all appointments. I left for Bluefield to see income collectors about my report. Stood in line 2 hours 20 minutes before I got in. Got home at 4:15. Got back 90.60 maybe.


3. Temp 26. Cloudy – snowed just a little sprinkle. We went to McComas. Plumbers finished putting gas furnace in bank and turned on the heat at 4:30. Jimmy Litz died this afternoon.


4. Temp 20 this morning. Clear & cold. Sun out nice. Jimmy Litz died yesterday in Huntington Veterans Hospital suddenly. Donzie Jr. came in from Navy- Discharged from 2 years service. Dr. & Mrs. Vermillion came in from Florida.


5. A fine day. Dr. Vermillion back at office from 2 weeks in Florida. Sunburnt to a blister nearly. Dad & I went up to Uncle Doc’s awhile & down to gym to see Athens Hi beat Spanishburg by 22 points.


6. Raining. Went to SS & church. At 2:00, I went to Jimmy Litz funeral at Methodist church. Home. Went to Quincy’s at 6: for a while. Snowy some at 8:00

8. Very nice day. Looks like spring.


9. Very nice. Raining some today. Dad & I went to Princeton. Bought stone for Mother’s grave. $550.00. Got our telephone fixed. Been broken since yesterday. Athens High beat Marsh Fork 63-51 in Beckley Tournament. We listened to it over FM.


10. Raining this morning. Temp 44. Dropping fast. May snow.

12. Temp 20. Snowing & blowing hard all day. Snow squalls- sun out- then snowing again.


13. Temp 16. Went to SS & church in Masonic building and was it cold. Repairing our church inside. SS scattered all over town. Stayed home all afternoon


14. A very nice day. Temp 22. Miners out for 2 weeks. John L. Lewis called in a 2 weeks mourning period for all miners killed in mines in 1948.


15. Snowing & blowing. We went to McComas. Road slick from Giatto over the hill. Miners all out. Dr. Levi Vermillion operated on in Bluefield Sanitarium today. Dr. Vermillion went over to be with him. QD moved back to Athens from Peterstown. Bought Parker Alvis’s home. Left and came home by Bluefield. Dr. stopped at station and got his ticket to go to Cincinnati Saturday.


16. Temp 24. Clear but cold. Leslie Kessinger’s boy & “Rolaid” boy & Mrs. Fletcher’s boy had a wreck up at crossroads. Turned over 3 times. Car ruined. Boys not hurt much. I went home & washed. Started ironing. Finished everything by 9:00. Tired too. Believe me.


17. Temp 20. Snowing when we got up. Cloudy. We are going to McComas today -not anymore until miners go back to work. Temp 40. Raining at 8:00. Just pouring.


18. Temp 44. Poured the rain all night/ 5 inches snow in Preston Co. Temp dropping. Snowing at 8:30, just pouring. Temp dropped from 44 at 7:00 this morning to 28 at 12:30. Snowing.


19. A fine day. Dr. Lilly left for Cincinnati Ohio for a dental meeting.


20. Chilly. Went to SS & church. Cloyd Armbrister preached – our pastor in Mullens. Stayed home in afternoon. Went out to see Aunt Emma around 6:00.

22. A fine day. Dr. Lilly came home from Cincinnati this morning.


23. A fine day. Went home, cleaned yard and worked outside all afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. Caldwell came down to visit us awhile. Was so good to get outside all afternoon. Came over to Mrs. Caperton’s to Bible Study at 7:30 - 22 Present.


24. A fine day. Dad & I went to Lee Oxley’s to get Mr. Oxley to plow & sow our oats for us.


25. Another nice day. Raining just a little today. Dr. Lilly & Doc went to Beckley to a dental meeting. Dad & I went to Princeton at 4:25 to get seed oats to sow in field above house.


26. Raining this morning. Temp 52.


27. 117 in SS. Stayed for church and home. Went down to Bill Dobbins. Quincy & Neta went with us. Then up to cemetery to see stones & down to Quincy’s farm to see cows and calves. Raining.

30. A fine day. Temp 70 during the day. I went home and washed and worked all afternoon. Was so tired. Ironed some too. Mr. Oxley came and finished plowing ground in order to sow oats.


31. Cloudy early. Cleared up & was a nice day. Mr. Oxley drilled our oats today. One span of the Bluestone Bridge buckled and threw 9 men 185 ft. into the water. 5 were killed, 4 badly injured, 1 jumped. Dad & I went down. Left at 6:10 this evening. 1000 people were there and only 5 minutes after we got there, they brought up one man out of the water. Was a sight to see. They found the other one but he was pinned under the steel so they will have to do some planning to get him out.


April


1. Cloudy & raining some today. Colder Temp 42 this morning. Ann came in from Ann Arbor Michigan this morning. Got homesick. She has 10 days.


2. A fine day. Baked a pie after supper.


3. Cool Today. Went to SS. Left at 11:15 for Bluestone Bridge to see if they had got out the other man under steel. Never saw so many people & cars. Road blocked 50 times. Raining some & colder. Got home at 3:00. Neta & Quincy went with us.


4. Temp 42. Dr. Vermillion said it just poured snow at 1:00 AM this morning. He was out to see Mr. Harris. Dr. Lilly gone all day- first to Bluefield with Ann to see Dr. Clark- then to Union to visit Dr. Ben Caldwell’s folks. Dad & I cleaned off cemetery at Uncle Tip’s. Little Joe Eskew took down the big pine in Campbell’s Cemetery today.


5. Temp 42. Cloudy & cold. Raining, snowing, and sleeting off & on most of day. Went to McComas. Just poured the rain all the way home from McComas. Colder.


6. Temp 32- Snowing & raining. Just poured the snow as I came to work. Big dabs too. Got a permanent this afternoon. Donzie Jr. got his new Chevrolet car today.


7. Raining. Cold. Went to McComas. Sleeted, hailed, and snowed. 2 inches of hail. Raining. Colder. Dad & I saw the reddest cloud at 8:30 I ever saw.


8. Temp 32. Snowing at 6:45. Hailed again today.

10. Temp 30. Sun out. Very nice day. Went to SS. 114 present. Charlie Archer preached for us. Our pastor gone. Stayed home all afternoon. No one in. Cloudy at bedtime.

12. Rained today. Hailed at McComas also. Sleeted, Hailed- just poured here in town. Hailed at home just poured.


13. Raining today. I went to Bluefield. Got me a spring coat & a pair of shoes. Just pouring the rain in Princeton and when I got home. Quincy, Neta, & Sis came out awhile after supper, Quinzetta first time since 31st of January. Neta & Quincy since February 20th.


14. Raining today, 1:30 -cleared up some. At 2:30, Dad went up to see the kids at the school this afternoon.


15. Wind blowed all night & all day. Sun out & clear. 6:30 PM Getting cloudy – may snow.


16. Temp 28 this morning at 6 o’clock. Snowing some on till noon and started again. Snowed all afternoon. Still snowing hard at dark.


17. Temp 20 this morning. Easter. Went to SS & church. After dinner Dad & I went over to see Hobart Alvis. He was fine. Said that he felt better than any time since he got sick last Sept. 2. Raining & cloudy


18. Temp 28. Cold & cloudy some, Hobart Alvis took bad sick at 7 last night. Took him to hospital. At 4:00 this morning Doctors operated to find what was his trouble. Quit, Started giving him blood transfusions and he died at 1:15 today. Such a shock for all the family, brothers & sisters. Dr. Lilly & Doc gone all day to Williamson dental meeting. Will Linkous died yesterday. Went out to Quincy’s awhile after supper. 


19. Temp 30. Cold this morning. Will Linkous funeral & burial today in town. Brought Hobart’s body in this afternoon. We went over to Hobart’s after supper - a large crowd was there.


20. A fine day. Temp 28, A big frost. Went home. Put out my washing and got ready & went to Hobart’s funeral & burial. Home at 3:30. Churned. After supper I ironed all of my washing and got to bed at 10:00- dead tired.


21. A very nice morning. Temp 30. Cloudy most of the day. Got our garden plowed today - Harve White’s boy. Went out to Quincy’s. Took Neta some kidney pills.


22. Raining. Temp 45. Just pouring as I came to office. Rained hard most all day. Bill K Peters died in Princeton last night-was ½ owner of Harmon- Peter’s Supply Company.


23. A fine day. Cold Early. Omar Belcher died in Princeton this morning -Reynold’s boy.


24. Temp 46. Went to SS & church, Stayed home all afternoon. Went out to see Aunt Emma after supper awhile. Temp 36 at 9 PM.


25. Temp 28. Big frost this morning. Sun out & clear. Dr. Lilly & a college girl had a run in with cars in front of Bradley’s Drug Store.


26. A fine day. Warmer. Went to McComas.


27. Cloudy. Temp 62. Raining this morning and all day. Dad & I went to Princeton this afternoon. Fred Roles, who married the Albert Beckett girl, was killed at Ghent WVa when his Pepsi Cola truck went off the road. 4 hours getting him out.


28. A very nice day. Chilly early. My hen set on 13 eggs. Hatched 12 nice chickens this morning. Early Pettrey died today- cancer. Will Kidwell also died today- cancer.


29. Temp 40. A nice day. Some cloudy. Mr. Moore put in the other two markers at Gilmer’s grave & Uncle Dee’s for us.


30. Raining hard all day. Dad & I went down to JE Pettrey’s after supper. Early’s body was there. A good crowd there. Home at 8:40. Raining.


May


1. A fine day. Went to SS & home. We are back in church for the first sermon after clean up. Dad & I & Hense Wiley went to Early’s funeral at Graham’s Chapel. A big crowd there. Home at 3:30. Rained on us as we come home. After supper we went to cemetery. Stopped raining after dark.


2. Clear & nice early this morning. Raining early and all day. Dad & I went to the show- name: Best Years of Your Life. 3 hours long- Theater full.


3. Clear and warm. Had another hen to hatch out- 13 chicks out of 14. I have 25 young chickens now. Our cow doesn’t have a calf yet. We are worried about her.


4. Temp today at noon 80. A fine day. Washed and made hills in garden for tomatoes & cabbage. Went to Paul Broyles at 5:00 and got plants and put them out after supper. Paul gave me 6 head lettuce plants. Still hot.


5. Hot again today. Way up in the 80’s. I cleaned and waxed floors at McComas while the Drs. were up at the clinic at Sagamore. Took Jennings polisher and did a good job. We have a new bull calf. A nice one. Cow is fine. Hot. Oh boy, we nearly roasted.


6. A fine day. Temperature way up. Records in heat have been broken all over the nation. Dr. Levi Vermillion very bad. Ironed tonight.


7. Cloudy some- raining. I baked a cake after supper.


8. A fine day. Mother’s Day. Went to SS & church. At 2:00 we went out to Quincy’s awhile and home.


9. Rained nearly all day. Stockholders meeting of the bank. Had an easy day. Not so much work. Dr. Vermillion gone to see Dr. Levi most of the afternoon. Dad & I took rich dirt and grass seed up and fixed cemetery plot. Leveled down Gilmer’s and fixed them up fine.


10. Rained nearly all day. Dr. Levi Vermillion is still living but they don’t see how. Still raining and colder.


11. Temp 46 this morning. Rained all night and still at it this morning. I have lost 2 of my chicks. Went home at noon. Done some sowing. Doc Calfee came out and told us that Quincy & Jesse had bought Snider’s store out.

13. Raining today. Margaret Vermillion Baxter had a breast removed today in Beckley hospital.

15. A fine day. Went to SS and home. Cleaned cellar ready for milk. Went up to cemetery after supper. A hard rain came up- Thunder. Stopped at Uncle Doc’s awhile & home.


16. Raining today. Dr. Vermillion came up. Said that Dr. Levi died yesterday afternoon at 2:30. Rained hard in the afternoon. 


17. Not going to McComas this week. State Dental meeting. Dr. Levi Vermillion funeral. I went down to cemetery for burial.


18. Dr. Lilly, Mrs. Lilly, & Doc Scott, Ben Caldwell, left at 5:00 this morning for Wheeling to State Dental Meeting. Dr. Lilly goes out as President Saturday at noon. I got Mae Dobbins & we cleaned floors. Waxed and polished today. Phillip Morris Tobacco Co had Johnny in town today. I saw him. Sprayed first tomatoes today. Put out 50 tomato plants. Churned made 4 pounds.


19. Clear and hot today. Temp 59. Warm. Washed and put out clothes on line before I came to work. Dr. Vermillion gone to Littlesburg on an inspection. County nurse also went. I ironed tonight. Dead tired.


20. A fine day. Cleaned windows. Put up curtains in Dr. Vermillion’s office. Mr. Caldwell very sick. I stopped to see him as I went home. All of his family gone.


21. A fine day. Stopped at Mr. Caldwell’s. He was so sick. I took Dr. Vermillion over to see him. He gave him relief right now. I went to Princeton at the noon hour. Lucy Bennett died at 8:00 tonight. Went to May Day Festival at the college. Anna Mae Fink Queen. Large crowd there. Bibbee’s came in. Dr. Vermillion had to go back and relieve Mr. Caldwell again at 5:00. Dr. Lilly came in at 11:00 tonight. I went up to stay all night but Bibbee’s were there.


22. Raining hard early. Went to SS & church. Stayed home all afternoon. Took Mr. Caldwell to Bluefield Sanitarium at 10:30 this morning. Wind high & storming rain this afternoon. We went out to Uncle Tip’s cemetery after supper.


23. Temp 60. Wind cold tho. West Virginia was hit hard with storms yesterday. Also Bluefield had hail big as golf balls. Dr. Lilly gone all day to Bluefield to see about Mr. Caldwell. Really sick. He has cancer.


24. Cloudy and raining some today. We went by Bluefield. I went with Clarence. Dr. Lilly went over at 8:00AM to be present for an operation on Mr. Caldwell at 9:00. We left Bluefield at 11:05. Raining on us most of the way over. Came back by Bluefield. Just poured rain as we came back. Had to pull over and park for a few minutes. Could not see how to drive.


25. A fine day. Went home at noon. Mowed cemetery as I went in and mowed all of lawn, painted lawn chairs white & sprayed tomatoes and churned 3 lb. butter and was dead tired at bedtime - 9:30.


26. Cloudy, raining this morning. Temp 40. Went to McComas. Raining, hailing hard at McComas. Did not hail in Athens. Baked a cake after supper. Rained all of the way home on us. Mr. Caldwell not so well.


27. Temp 34. Big frost. Clear, nothing hurt by frost. Dr. Lilly gone to Bluefield this morning to see Mr. Caldwell. Not so good. Doc in McComas. Maybe I will get a rest. Baked cake after supper.


28. Temp 36. No frost at our place but bit things in town.


29. Temp 36. Frost. Bit everything over on Burch Street and at Uncle Tip’s. No SS & church. Commencement sermon at college. Rev. Hugh D. Pickett preaching. Stayed home all day. After supper we took flowers up to Mother’s grave & seen Aunt Emma for a while.


30. A fine day. Chilly early. Worked at office until noon. Went home and worked out the garden. Churned. Made 5 lbs. & a little bit. Jasper Keaton died yesterday. Spent 12 years in Memorial Hospital in Princeton. Dr. Meador’s came up but did not come over to house. Put flowers on graves. Brought Mr. Caldwell home from hospital today. Went up to cemetery and got vases and basket. Cemetery pretty.


31. A fine day. Chilly tho. Temp 49. Went to McComas. Not doing any work over there and very little here in Athens. Mowed lawn- all of it- after supper.


June


1. Temp 49 this morning. Chilly but clear. Sunny out & warm by 9:00. Went home & washed, worked in garden some. Cake over town awhile. Went home and ironed. QDs came out for a little while for flowers (Roses).


2. Went to McComas. Sick all day. Kidneys bothering me bad.


3. Temp 49. Too sick to work today. Dr. Vermillion gave me some sulfur drug- helped me a lot. Mr. Caldwell not so well. Churned. Made 4 lbs. butter. Came over town a while for groceries.


4. Temp 49. Clear today & hot- Came over to work this morning. Feeling better. Mr. Caldwell bad today. Dr. V went over to see him.


5. Temp 48. Temp 48. Sick. Did not go to SS & church, Stayed home all day. Slept some.

7. Temp 50. Went to McComas. Rained just enough to lay dust.


8. Clear & cool. I took off hen with 13 chicks. All fine. Went to Princeton. Got 100 sweet potato plants & 50 cabbage plants. Made ridges and hills and put out the plants after supper. Put up hay. Quinzetta & Fern & Kay came out for a while. First time since April 13.


9. Cold & clear all day. Little Doc & I went to McComas today. No work. Loafed all day. John L. called out all miners beginning Monday for a week so as to use up all surplus coal on hand. 17. Just poured rain all night and still raining at 8:30. Pouring. Everything is wet now. My room leaked like mad. I was up from 11:45 on every 30 minutes seeing after it.

27. Hot today. Mr. Caldwell very bad. Dr. went over for 1 hour. Came home. Went back at 11:10 and stayed til 12:20. Went home and ate dinner. Went back and stayed all afternoon until he died at 4:10. I went & stayed until undertaker came & got the body.


28. Hot today- Went to Bluefield. Got me a dress and home at 12:45. Left at 10:20. Went over to Caldwell’s. Was there when they brought him home. Went home, got supper. Done up the work and Dad & I went back. Mrs. Wells & I met the people at the door until 1:00. Dead tired when I hit the bed.


29. Raining this morning. State Road patched the holes on Broadway this morning- Thanks to Levi Scott. Went out to Caldwell’s with Dr. Vermillion. Having my car washed. Funeral & burial for Mr. Caldwell. I will sit with the family. Tired but picked raspberries & sprayed tomatoes.

25. Still sick in bed most of day. Only up to make biscuits for Dad’s breakfast and to strain milk. Dad called Doctor back this morning. Neta & Quinzetta came out awhile about 9:30. Dr. David said that it was a case of nerves. I was never so sick. Jessie & Neta came over a while after supper.

1. Temp 38. Rained- just poured all day. No damage done last night in town by pranksters. Snowing mixed with rain for 1 hour today. First snow so far. Temp 36 at bedtime.


2. Temp 30. Ice and a big frost. Went to Princeton. Got feed for cow- 2 bags. Home. Put out my washing. Went up to see QD- sick, cold. Home. Churned. Got to bed at 10:00.


3. Raining a little this morning. Temp 38. We are going to McComas. I haven’t been there in 2 weeks. Miners still on strike. Snowed some all day.


4. A bad day Temp 26. Snowed a little most of the day & rained. Called to Dr. Holdren’s and found Uncle Doc very bad. Also Aunt Chris & Cisley. Alice Lee took Butch to hospital and the trouble was- they were just gassed. Uncle Doc was nearly dead also Aunt Christie.


5. Temp 27. Cloudy & cold all day. 2 boys killed, 2 hurt in car wreck near Speedway last night. Concord got beat by WVa Tech 25 to 13 in Princeton. We listened over radio.

22. A fine day. Just like spring. Temps way up in the 60’s. Temp 54 at 5:00 PM and raining hard.


23. Temp 26 at 8:00 AM & was snowing when we got up. Ground is white.


24. A very nice day.


25. Temp 27. Christmas Day. Went to SS. Xmas treat. 85 present. Home. Got dinner. Sis finally came out and ate with us. Mr. and Mrs. Wells came down. We stopped just a few minutes with them. We went out to Quincy’s for supper. ( Note: In the Athens Baptist Church, a Christmas treat box was given out to the children by Santa Claus. Throughout the year, birthday money was collected during Sunday School Opening Exercises. It was customary to give a penny for each year of your age. At the end of the year at Christmas, this money was used to purchase candy, nuts and fruit for the Christmas treat. Verlie was a member of that committee. KM.) 


26. Raining this morning. Got up early. Put out my washing and came over with Dr.’s milk. Back home. Took clothes off of porch lines and put them in the kitchen on lines with a nice fire. They all dried. Did not work in office today. Went up to Uncle Doc’s awhile and stopped back by Aunt Emma’s awhile & home. Cooked hog head that Carl Mack sent Dad. Ironed all clothes that were dry.


27. Raining some today. Went to McComas. I worked hard till 1:00 PM. No more patients. Came home at 3:00, Roberta Brennaman married in Catholic Church in Princeton this morning. 18 Eggs.


28. Temp 27. Frost. Went to Princeton for feed. Home. Baked pie for supper at church tomorrow night.


29. Temp 27. Frost. Did not go to McComas today.


30. A fine day. Temp 21. Blaine Jennings got a new television set and Eula called me at 6:30. Dad & I went over to the drug store and saw our first television show.


31. Temp 21. Sun out. This is the last day of 1949. Cloudy, looks like rain maybe.
