5. A bad day - Aunt Alice went to Raleigh General Hospital for treatment for diabetic & high blood pressure.

8. Went to McComas. Dr. Lilly kindly puny today.


9. Dr. Lilly sick today and not able to come to office to work. He left water running in the unit and flooded the office & ruined the bank. Did we have a time. Mopped water half of morning.


10. A very nice day. Dr. Lilly still in bed also Mrs. Lilly sick.


11. Sunday - Went to SS & Church. Worked in office part of afternoon checking up Daddy’s cancelled check.


12. Dr. Lilly still not able to work today. A very nice day.


13. A very nice day. Went out to Quincy’s. Mother baked him a cake for his birthday and I took it to him.


14. A very nice day. I went to college to see Charlie Arnel and Daisy Mae in a show. Very nice crowd there. I rented my cottage today to man working for Board of Education.


15. Raining today. Trouble with Dr. Lilly’s car coming from McComas and had it in Matoaka Garage for 40 minutes.


16. A fine day - wind rather high. Went to basketball game at college. Northfork vs. Athens


17. A fine day. We went to Princeton after supper a while. Mother, Sis & I.


18. A fine day. Went to SS and left for Beckley to see Aunt Alice. Stopped and saw Aunt Bess a few minutes. Aunt Alice is to go home today if MaryLee came for her. Dr. Kelly preached today.


19. Sick today with an awful cold. Dr. Lilly gone to Bluefield to dental meeting. Cloudy and warm. Still snow on ground in drifts which fell Dec. 11-44. Aunt Alice went home from hospital today.


20. Raining today. Still sick with cold in my head.


 21. A very nice day. Raining some tho. Got card from Lizzie saying Aunt Rose was real sick.


March


1. A very nice day. Still snow in drifts which came December 11. Feel so bad.

3. A fine day. Sun out but warm. Went to McComas feeling bad- cold in my head.


4. A very nice day- raining some early this morning. Went to SS & church. QD & Ennis & Fern came down in afternoon and ate dinner with us. Went up to see Alice Lee & baby a while after supper.


5. Raining all day…hard most of day. 


6. Raining - wind raising and did it blow all day…took all of my roofing off one side of our barn and blew down the orchard fence… Fast as Dad & I would lay it up. Roofs on so many houses were ruined everywhere there was tin on them. Raining at dark…lots of rivers over flood stage. 


7. Raining some today and wind rather strong. Dr. Lilly gone to Beckley to Lillyann’s wedding at 2 today. Went out to QD’s a while after supper.


8. A very nice day. I had to go to McComas by myself. Dr. Lilly not able to go today. I cleaned and waxed rugs…took me all day. Snow all gone that fell December 11.


9. Up early and snowed all over everything. Temp 26 this morning.


10. Chilly this morning but cleared up and sun out all day…wind high. Put tin on part of barn today. Shumate helped Dad. 9 arrested and took to jail. 


11. A very nice day - cold tho. Went to SS & church. Rev. Moore preached. A call church meeting to sell parsonage. Priced 4,500 - house + 1 lot 500.00 for lot next to Wells. I rented my house to Mrs. Ada Robertson.


12. Monday. Raining some today. Mrs. Robertson paid rent. Will move in as soon as she can. 15.00 per month.


13. Tuesday. A very nice day.


14. A fine day - wind high tho. We went out with QD & Quincy and looked furniture over in parsonage that is for sale. Mrs. Bernard Thompson bought the parsonage today.

16. A beautiful day. Edna Holdren died this morning at hospital in Charlottesville Va.


17. Raining today. Came to Bluefield from McComas to meet Mrs. Lilly and Ann.


18. A very nice morning. Went to SS & church. Left at 12:30 going to Elgood to Edna Holdren’s funeral. Rained a little - large crowd there.


19. A fine day. Temp 76 today. Car Wreck on Princeton Oakvale road. Pepsi Cola truck hit a car parked and injured seven of Mr. Bowling’s family from Lashmeet. 3 died late in the week.


20. Still a nice day. Went out to Quincy’s a while after supper. Took Fern with us. QD came later packing up everything.


21. Raining today. Colder a lot. Helped QD up at his house - moving in today.


22. A nice snow on ground this morning. Temp 20 at Jenning’s Drug Store at 8:00. QD moved in yesterday and last night and today.


23. A very nice day. Dad sick all night and still sick. Vomiting - too sick to go to school building. I went and fixed fire and done up everything for him. Sold our heifer to PD DeLung. Rogers was over to see Dad also Quincy & Arthur Jones.


24. Warmer, cloudy tho today. Sis and I went to Bluefield at 5:00. Got home at 9:30. Never saw so much shopping going on.


25. A fine day. Went to SS & church. At noon, soon as we got home, in came Aunt Emma, Varena, Dee & wife & girl. Left at 3:00. Went up to Ennis a while after they left. Dan Martin came and got our calf while we were gone.


26. Cloudy but warm. Cherries, green gage, and peach flowers are in full bloom. Bill Shepherd stopped for a few minutes saying that Aunt Rose was real sick.


27. A beautiful day. People plowing gardens everywhere. Mowed our yard tonight.


28. A fine day. Dr. Lilly went to Princeton after dinner. Raining about 9:30 tonight.


29. A beautiful day…sprinkled rain late in afternoon. Got Mother’s coat from Sears Roebuck & Co. Sent it back- no good.

31. A beautiful day. Sis & Lodema & I went to Hinton shopping at 5:00. Got home at 10 - Had lots of fun.


April


1. A beautiful day. Easter. Went to SS & church. After dinner went out to Quincy’s a while. All of the family was there. Quincy’s & QD came down a while about dark to see about a bed for QD.


2. Raining some today- warm. Dr. Vermillion gone to Charleston today - Lodge. Earl Lilly came to Mrs. Gautier’s after being gone for 30 some years. They had a big birthday party.


3. A very nice day. Sprinkled rain some but warm and nice. Dad and I worked some after supper & then went up to see QD a while. Tootsie came to stay with them for a few weeks.


4. Up at 4:30 and called Quincy to come take Ennis to the hospital. I went up and helped get her ready. About 8:00- Baby girl- OK. Went over to see the baby. Temp at 6:00- 72 on our front porch. Real hot today. (Note: The baby girl was me. CKM.)


5. Cold - temperature dropped to 32. Snowed some this morning.


6.Temp 20 this morning. Ice – a big frost. Fruit we know is killed. Cold all day & sun out. We went over to see Ennis & baby…Sis, Fern, Mama, and I.


7.Temp 26 this morning and a big frost. Sick- kidney trouble.


8. A very nice day. Mother, Sis & I went up to see Ennis a while.


9. Feel so bad. Scott came in at 1:30 this morning.


 10. Went to McComas. Still sick - took a chill. Dr. Lilly had to bring me honey at 2:00. Temp 103.

12. Dr. Vermillion took me to hospital today. Dr. Todd looked me over, gave me a sulfa drug and sent me home.

14. Up and Dad and I came over town a while and right back home. Came over for mail. 


15. Went to SS & church. Rev. “Neuer” preached a trial sermon today.


16. Came over town this morning a while. Sicker than ever.


17. Called Dr. Vermillion back today. Worse than been. Bumps came out on me. Stopped the sulpha drug today. Temp 101

19. Up this morning and over town a little while. Office is so dirty.


20. Came over to work today. Rain. Dr. Lilly gone all afternoon to Bluefield with the folks.


21. A very nice day. Dr. Lilly went to McComas but I didn’t. Still too sick and weak. Went to Princeton - Sis drove for us. Dr. Gilbert Daniels died yesterday - reported in town.


22. A very nice day. Cold tho. Went to SS & church. Slept most of afternoon. Mother went up to see Ennis a while. Got home at 5:30. I went up a while. She is not doing so good and out to Quincy’s.

24. A very nice day- cold and cloudy most of the day. Still weak & nervous. Dr. Gilbert Daniel’s was buried today. Dr. Vermillion went.

May


1. Temp 34 at home; Temp 29 ½ at Jennings Drug Store. Cold all day.


2. Temp 34 this morning. At 11:45, it was snowing…Temp 33. Snowing in Princeton at 9:15. Moss French died at 5:30. Sick again today. Sulfa Drug Dr. Vermillion gave me for my kidneys again.


3. Temp 34. Raining & snowed a little as we went to McComas. Mrs. Lilly & Mrs. Vermillion went to Matoaka with us to Baptist meeting for the day. I was sick again all day from sulfathiazole Dr. V. gave me. Bumps came out on me.


4. Cold this morning Dr. Lilly & Dr. Vermillion to Beckley to Moss French’s funeral & burial. Rained, snowed and cleared up then got cloudy, hailed and thundered a lot. Rained some more. I stayed in bank with Shirley today.

7. Great news. Reporting war in Europe is over. Germans have surrendered. Radios are on full blast.


8. President Truman did announce at 9:08 this morning that the Germans had surrendered unconditionally. Rained today.

11. Temp 30 this morning. Plenty of ice and frost all day. Rained some.


12. Temp 34 this morning. No frost that we saw. Raining by noon and continued all afternoon. Went to college to crowning of the Queen Lia Pais was queen. Large crowd there. Raining.


13. Raining this morning. Was called out of bed. JC from Mullins called to come at once to Aunt Alice’s and we left at 9- got there at 10:15. Aunt Alice died at 11:00. We came home, ate dinner, and left for Elgood to have grave dug and home wore to a frazzle…so tired and worn out.


14. A fine morning. State Road is working the road here in town for a new top to Princeton…a mess. Jason Shumate’s boy in from the army got beat up a lot…a real, mess up.


15. A fine morning. Tootsie came up to go to Elgood to funeral and burial of Aunt Alice. Also Aunt Rose, Lizzie, Bill & Billy Earl came to our house and ate dinner. We left at 12:30. Rained a lot. Large crowd there. We went out to Quincy after supper to see Fannie & Lee & Larry.


16. Cloudy and hot today. Raining at 1:20.


17. Cloudy & raining today. Windstorm blew down my Lowery apple tree & lot of fence & limbs off of maple in yard. Hailed and cooler.

19. Cooler a lot. Frost this morning. Aunt Nell Bird died at 2:00 at Speedway. Went out to Quincy’s after supper. Quinzetta got my watch at Princeton today…seems to be doing fine.


20. A very nice day. Went to SS and home. Went to Levi Bird’s at Speedway a while in afternoon and back to church to meeting with Rev. Nerver and loafed a while and home and to church at 8:00.


21. Rained today…cool. Dr. Lilly went to funeral at Speedway of Aunt Nel Bird. Scott Rogers was picked up by the FBI today for Horbinson, Dudley, Sophie - all wanted.


22. Raining today. A real hard rain.


23. Was cool today. Dr. Vermillion went to Beckley to see about his hip. Spread tar and put top on road today…a mess.

25. A fine day. Cold. They finished top on road today…boy a mess. Dr. Lilly gone all afternoon. Went to college to high school class night…a big crowd.

27. A fine day. Warming up a lot. Went to SS & home. College Commencement sermon at 10:30. After dinner we went up to QD’s. Fern’s birthday and went down to Geo Thompson & Quincy’s and home and stayed there.

1. A nice day.


2. Hot today. Raining late this evening. Went out to Quincy’s after supper…Dad and I.


3. Cloudy & cool. Went to SS and left with Marylee, Uncle Hade, and Ellis Crawford & Rueben to Elgood. Met Aunt Rose, Lizzie, Bill & Billy came there. We had lunch in church. Cleaned off cemetery…our part. And left for home about 5.


4. Cold this morning. Raining. Temp 42. Cloudy all day. Weather bad. Fire in furnace in all homes.


5. Temp 42. Cold all day and cloudy. Still have fires. We stopped in Princeton at hospital to see Eugene Keatley, real sick. Temp Sunday 107.4. Normal temp today.


6. Temp 38 at 6:00 this morning. Cloudy again today.


7. Cold. Temp 40. Cloudy. Rained most of day.


8. Raining hard today. Warmer some. Jack Oxley died today. Mowed QD yard tonight for him.

10. A very nice day. Went to SS & church. At 1:30 we went to Jack Oxley’s funeral. Large crowd there. Then we went on the hunt for a pig to Jake Wyrick’s, back to town then to Ora Keaton’s. Got me a nice pig. Went out to Quincy’s a while after supper.


11. Rained today. Put out sweet potato plants.


12. Rained again today. Went to McComas. Strike on since Friday night at Sagamore because Rev. Beggs hit a miner with a pipe. Elbert Alvis quit work in Co. store also.


13. So far no rain today. It is now 1:30. Dr. Lilly gone from office this afternoon. Went out to Quincy’s a while after supper. Also worked out garden.


14. Rained today also. Dr. Marsh was retired as President of Concord. Anxious to know who new man will be. We went over and got Quincy at kitchen. Boys both working and Beckett is painting his car.


15. Hot and a good breeze. Rained.


16. Hot. Rained today. We didn’t go to McComas. No appointments. Sis and I went to Bluefield at 4:30. Got home at 10:00. Shopped a lot. Got Mother a new dress and myself a waist dress.


17. Very nice day. Went to SS & Church. Quincys and us went over beyond Celanese plant to watch Roanoke squad hunt river for a man drowned Tuesday. They quit and gave up the hunt while we were there. Rained a lot on us. Hard road to get thru. 11 years for Dad at SS.

1.  A fine day. Went to SS & church.

4.  Came over town early and went home and worked all day. Dad and I cleaned up yard. Got everything out where we took out the smoke house. Mother sowed cucumbers in the square. Put 4 tomatoes in the corners.


5.  A fine day, not as hot. Thursday. Mary McKorkle resigned from Training School in yesterday’s paper.


6.  Friday. Worked hard. Came over town after supper. Saw a fight in front of bank- Ed Dobbins & Agee boy.


7.  A fine day. Went to McComas. Came home at 3:00.Rained a little during the night, not much. Came over town again after supper 7 loafed a while. Summer Training School out today- 5 weeks.


8.  A nice day. Went to SS & church. Mack Melvin came over, Ate dinner, left on 4:00 bus. Sis came out and 2 Drs. Came at 6:30 and stayed till 8:30. We went out for a ride.


9.  Sun in eclipse at 7:45 - just a little bit, Cloudy and thundering some at noon. Looks like rain.

20.  A fine day. Rained today a lot. Stacked our hay this morning. Dewey Hall’s boy was struck by lightning on a truck down near Hatcher’s and killed late this afternoon. Really rained.


21.  A fine day, Rained again today, Mack Cook’s wife died last night- heart attack. Went over to Princeton – seen Aunt Chris and Mrs. Martin awhile and home. Got a pig from Mr. Wells for hay in upper field.


22.  A fine day. Went to SS & church. Sis and I went to hospital. Seen Aunt Chris and June and on to the show. Home about 6:00. Came over town and loafed awhile. Raining at bedtime- a lot.


23.  A nice morning. Warm and cloudy, Rained a little in the late afternoon.


24.  A fine day. Hot. Got a bushel of peaches at Gate’s store as we came from McComas. Quincy’s came out and helped peel them.


25.  Dr. Lilly got a call at last midnight that Henry Lilly was real sick. Left at 5 AM and was gone over there all day.


26.  A hot day. I went to McComas for most of the day. Dr. Lilly did not go. He went at 7:00 to Henry’s and he died at 11:00.


27.  Dr. Lilly gone all day seeing about things. Raining at 3:30 PM.


28.  Up and over town early. Left with Dr. and Mrs. Lilly & W.J. Lilly for Dunns in my car for funeral & burial in Bluefield cemetery. Scott came and children came in Dr. Lilly’s car. A real storm at 6:00 - just as we got in. Lots of rain all night.


29.  Sunday. Went to SS & church. It is just pouring rain today. Harry Parker arrived in town this morning from overseas.

August


1.  Rained today


2.  Cloudy sprinkling rain today. Saw Harry Parker this morning for a few minutes. Did not go to McComas. Dr. Lilly took a carload to Rockcastle Association. Mae Dobbins helped clean & wax floors.

4.  Went to SS & church. After dinner, we went out to Watson White’s for a while.


5.  On my vacation beginning today. Went with Ann to Hinton for Beth. Got home at 11:30.


6.  A very nice day. Rained a lot today. Went to Princeton this morning- Mother, Dad and I.


7.  Loafed most of day. Painted around rug & hall.


8.  Went up to crossroads to auction sale in afternoon. Had a lot of fun. Ennis & Fern went along.


9.  Went to Bluefield. Neta and Sis went along. Spent all day over there. Got home at 5:30.


10.  A fine day. Got a permanent. Dr. Vermillion called for me to drive him o Bluefield to meet Mrs. Vermillion coming in from New York. Got home at 3


11.  Up early and ready to leave at 7:20 for Spencer to see Gilmer. Sis went with us. Had a nice trip. Gilmer was fine and we got home at 9:00. We got 25 lbs. sugar in Spencer.


12.  A fine day. Went to SS & church. Stayed home most of afternoon. Harry Parker came over for a visit. Dad & I went out to Quincy’s a few minutes after dinner.


13.  A fine day. I came back to work after a week off from work. 


14.  War ended today. Good news that the Japs are surrendering. The war will soon be over. News all day.  At 7:00 tonight Pres. Truman announced the war is over. Boy what a crowd in town. We came over for a little while.

16.  Dr. Vermillion up early and left going to Bluefield Sanitarium Hospital- a sick man.

18.  Went to McComas. Came by Bluefield to see Dr. Vermillion.


19.  A fine day. We left at 10:00 going to Mountain Lake. The whole White family took our dinner, ate on the mountain and then went up to Bill Shepherd’s. No one there.- left at 4 and met them coming in on hard road, Came home, ate supper in Quincy’s yard and home and to church to hear the new preacher “Bootoff”.


20.  We never worked so hard in our lives as today. Couldn’t sleep so tired.


21.  Another hard day- miners still out on strike at Sagamore. Came by Bluefield to see Dr. Vermillion.


22.  Worked hard again today and came back at 7:00 and wrote ins. Policies till 9:30. So tired could not sleep again.


23.  A fine day-cool. Another hard day.


24.  Still working hard. Rained most of day- real hard.


25.  A fine day. Didn’t do so much work today. Dr. Scott came in early this morning.


26.  Jim Campbell died yesterday. Went to SS & church. Rev. Hensley & Mrs. Hensley here today. Tom Peters preached. Hensley prayed and taught men’s class. Women’s class went in. Hired Rev. Bootoff at church meeting. Helped Dr. Tom give whooping cough serum to several kids. Went down to Quincy’s a while after supper.


27.  Dr. Lilly gone to dental meeting at Gary today. Dr. Vermillion came home yesterday so Mrs. Vermillion said and came to office a little while in the afternoon.


28.  Temp 40 this morning but a fine day.


29.  Warmer today. Temp hit 91 in Bluefield around 4:00 this afternoon.

31.  Went to McComas and it was hot. Miners went back to work today. Been off for 30 days.


September


1.  A fine day. Hot but a good breeze. Went to Princeton after supper awhile and set up with Ed Wirtz’s mother. Raining and storming. Josie Mace’s house bought from “Martin” Shumate burned at 12:45. All of Effie Lilly’s furniture in it. Fire truck would not run.


2.  A fine day. Went to SS. No church so I went home and slept most of the afternoon. After supper we went up to see Mrs. Eskew. She got home yesterday from Charleston Hospital. She had a goiter removed. Went to bed early again.


3.  Temp 45 this morning. Labor Day and we are working.

7.  Still hot. Dr. Vermillion is getting out to office some now. Preacher Rev. Bootoff came in last night.

9.  Our new preacher came and took over in church today. We went after church to Elgood to homecoming. Lots of folks there and lots to eat. A nice day.

11.  Cloudy and raining today. Mrs. L.M. Eaton at Elgood died today. Ed Wirtz mother died at 10:10 tonight. I was there.


12.  Cold this morning and all day. Uncle Tip was taken to hospital in Bluefield today.


13.  Rained a little today. Went to Elgood to Mrs. Eaton’s funeral—back and to Mrs. Wirtz at 4:30.

6.  Raining today. Dr. Lilly sick- not able to go to McComas. I went to Bluefield. Mother and Sis went along. Got me a new suit & hat. Got home late. Took second dose of cold serum.


7.  Dr. Vermillion went to Wheeling today- Grand Lodge. A fine day. Went to SS- 98 present & church full house. Uncle Burt was taken to hospital at 12:30. Bad foot- unconscious. We went over to see him at 3:00. Went over to Quincy’s and onto church at 7:30.


8.  A very nice day but raining late in afternoon. Went up to see Uncle Burt at 7:00. He is real sick. May lose his foot. Full of diabetes. Raining hard when we left Princeton.


9.  Went to McComas today. Bill Shepherd came in at 15 to six for breakfast with us.


10.  Temp 30- Lots of ice- a real freeze. Dr. Vermillion came in at 6 tonight from Wheeling.


11.  Cool this morning. Did not go to McComas today until strike is over all miners are out. Bud Kessinger died early this morning at 1:30.

20.  A fine day. Sis & I went to Princeton after supper. Uncle Hade, Merilee & Reuben was up to see Uncle Bert. We saw them for a while.

28.  A fine day. We drove over to Peterstown to see Eva Shrader and they were gone on a picnic. Came home and went out to Quincy’s and down to their farm awhile and to church at 7:30.

31.  A fine day, Quincy lost his job down at kitchen. A new man came and took over. Mr. Stewart told him 2 weeks ago about the change. Palmer Boys hit Bill Kirby’s car head on and all have broken bones bad. However, we saw cars before they wrecked.

23.  Snowing today. Cold as get out. Temp 18. Dr. Lilly gone all day to Bluefield. Went to Sid White’s funeral at Baptist church. Dr. Vermillion in Charleston all day Shriner’s meeting.


24.  Cold this morning. Temp 20. Came over town for Ma & Daddy to take cold serum and down to Quincy’s awhile.


25.  A fine day. Warmer a lot. Went to SS & church. After dinner we went to see Uncle Bert but he was gone. Went back to Princeton to see Dr. went up to Uncle Doc’s awhile. Went to church at 7:30.


26.  Temp 22 this morning. A big frost. Snow still on in the shade. Dr. Lilly gone all day today to see Phyllis & baby. Killed hogs today. Shumate & Hense Wiley.

29.  A light snow on this morning. Roads are slick. We started to McComas and got to Bluefield at 10:00. Seen Phyllis awhile and came back home.

December


1.  We did not go to McComas too slick. Didn’t even start.


2.  A very nice day. Went to SS & church. My car went bad- won’t start. Snowed some today. Didn’t go to church at 7:30…too bad.


3.  A very bad day. Rained and cloudy all day. State Trooper Harrison was killed in a car going over back into creek at Green Tree at 4:30. Dr. Lilly seen them get him out. He had been to Bluefield.


4.  Started snowing at 5:45 this morning and just poured all day. We went to McComas. Got stuck on hill above Giatto and had to be pushed out by 3 other men. Got there at 11:45. Put on chains and started home at 5 to 4. Got home OK.


5.  Snowing, sleeted at 4:40. Just poured and is pouring the snow all morning. Turned out school at Training and High at 11:00- on 2 buses- got in more chains. Cars skidding more than I have seen in many a day. Snowing all day.


6.  Temp 28. Slick. We did not go to McComas today – roads too bad. Lizzie, Uncle Bert’s girl, died today. Went down to Quincy’s for supper then went to church meeting at 7:30.


7.  Sun out this morning. First time for over a week. Uncle Roof Gautier died at 7:00 this morning. Bill McCroskie was found dead at his home on Little Island Creek. Officers called Dr. Vermillion to go with them. First he was shot and an autopsy. Frank Holroyd said he died of pneumonia.


8.  Still a bad day. Roads are better. I could not get my car up Caldwell Hill this morning. Dr. V. & Scott went out at 15 to 5 with me to get it out. Quincy’s all came. Daddy and Marion Oxley -took all of us to push it up the hill -slick. Sis and I went to Princeton after supper.


9.  A fine day. Went to SS & church & ch meeting and on to Elgood to the Lizzie Harless funeral and Mr. McCroskie. One at 2 and the other at 3. Came home. Uncle Hade & Merrilee & Reuben tried to get there…only got here. Left at 5:30 for home. I went to church.


10.  Rained a lot during early morning. Went to snowing at 6:30 and has not stopped at this writing - 12:30. Rev. Bottorff was operated on this morning for appendicitis. Dr. Lilly has been sick since Friday. Rented my house to JH Bell this morning. Dr. Vermillion had trouble with a doper at 2:30 today. I called the law to take him out of office.


11.  Temp 9 this morning and still snowing all day. We did not go to McComas again today.


12.  Very nice day. Temp 9 above. Warmer up some.


13.  Cloudy. Started snowing at 9:00 and did not stop all day. We went to McComas and had a wreck coming home. A truck loaded with mine props. Dr. Lilly would not get out of the way. Sleeting and freezing when we got home. Mrs. Scott Lilly operated on appendicitis today.


14.  Temp 30 this morning. Ice all over everything but not too slick underfoot.

16.  Temp 6 above this morning. Cold as the dickens. Went to SS & church. Rev. Moore preached. Voted not to have church at night. Wind high all afternoon and night.


17.  Temp this morning 4 above and colder. Water in bank building froze up. I fell and hurt my knee when I got home on walk.


18.  Temp 13 above this morning. We went to McComas. Got there at 10:50. Started snowing at 1:00 and just poured. Started home at 3:20. Got in at 5:45. Aunt Lizzie Maupin died. Laura White died. A bad night.


19.  Boy, it is slick. About 3 inches of snow and pouring all day. Dave Snider’s boy died last night. Dr. Lillys gone all afternoon shopping and to meet Doc coming in tonight. Got home at 11:00. Road bad.


20.  We did not go to McComas today. Temp 2 above at Jennings. Snowing yet this morning. Went to Mrs. Maupin’s funeral at 2:00 and to Laura White’s at 4 today. Lizzie wrote Aunt Rosa is real sick.


21.  Temp 10 above at Jennings. No fire in bank building this morning. Sis and I went to Princeton. Shopping all afternoon. Jesse brought us in at near 5:00


22.  A very fine day. James Holmes was killed in a fall through an elevator at Norfolk today. Sis and I went to Princeton shopping at 5:30. Got home at 9:00.


23.  Slick and bad today. Went to SS, Nice crowd there 107. Went out to Quincy’s awhile in afternoon. Went to Christmas Program at church at 7:30.


24.  A bad day most all day. Raining & sleeting & freezing at 7:30. Jessie could not get to his work. Road worse condition between here and Princeton than ever before.


25.  Slick early but sun out and thawing around 10: Santa Claus was fine at our house. I came over town to Mr. Holmes funeral in our church and home and stayed there. Joe Thompson died today.


26.  Temp 22. Very nice day…not too cold. Ice everywhere tho…roads bad. Rueben came up today and stayed all night. He and I went out to Quincy’s to see Sis. She was so sick…eat too much, I guess. Got home at 11:01.


27.  We went to McComas. Roads good to Matoaka but solid ice from there over. Nice coming back. Joe Thompson was buried today at Elgood. Snowing & raining at bedtime. 16 eggs today


28.  A new snow on top of what we have and still snowing this morning. Temp 30. Fred Cooper’s was hit by a car coming from Bluefield…twice by same car. Quincy’s was out for dinner with us today. I went home for a while.

30.  Went to SS & church. Stopped at office to work up my income blanks & Sis came for me to go to the show with her and see Woodrow Wilson’s family from 1908 to 1920. Home and stayed then raining. Cloudy all day.
