January

1.  Raining hard and wind high. Dr. Lilly & I went to McComas today but did not work much. We went to the show to see Zazu Pitt & Slim Summerville. Very good. Wind high. Sold Jersey cow today.

2.  Cold but clear. Wind high. Oliver Scott came after Jersey cow today. I worked at office for Dr. Vermillion all day sending statements. War raging- Manila fell today - in hands of Japan. Dr. Sam Holroyd very sick today. We bought 2 $750.00 Defense Bonds today.

3.  Went to McComas till 2:00. At 10 to four I left for Princeton to see Crockett about fender and get sugar and chicken feed and have our glasses sent away for repair. Snowing hard on me as I came from Princeton at 5:00.

4.  Raining during the night & sleet and roads are really slick. Went to SS & church.  And took Dad over to fix his fire for the night. I did not go to church at 7:30. Stayed home. Dr. Sam Holroyd is in hospital very sick.

5.  10 above zero today. We went to McComas but it was slick as can be. Got home at 6:30. I did not go to choir practice today.

6.  4 below zero today. Dr. Lilly drove to McComas today I was afraid. Went by Bluefield and came home by Matoaka. Got home at 10:00.

7.  6 above zero this morning and still snowing a little. Really snowed today all day. We had a bad trip home from McComas. 1 hour & 25 minutes coming by way of Bluefield. Roads so slick.

8.  6 below zero here. 8 below over in town. Really cold. Dr. Lilly refused to go to McComas today. Afraid of roads. I helped work out Federal Income Tax most of day. Got our glasses today- sent on Saturday. Athens High beat- 39 to 16 -Shady Springs.

9.  4 above zero this morning and snowed some. Cloudy all day. I went over town to bank and up and visited Brown Scott a while. Dr. Lilly had a tooth pulled today.

13.  Dr. Sam Holroyd died at 4:30 today in Memorial Hospital.

14.  We went to a ballgame down to gym and over to Dr. Sam’s a while.

15.  We did not go to McComas today. Stayed and went to Dr. Sam’s funeral &  burial. Cold & snowing. I worked at the office all m morning helping Dr. Vermillion on Federal Income.

February

1.  Went to SS & church. Stayed home. Real bad day cold. Mrs. Wells went to hospital for operation tomorrow.

2.  Cold slick & snowing hard as we came from McComas by way of Bluefield. Safest way. Went to hear Rabbi Kaurzetz at Baptist church at 8:00- 54 present.

3.  Zero this morning. Cold today. George Roach vs. Aunt May Robinson’s trial started today in Mercer County Court.

4.  Cold. Raining right much. Went to choir practice at 6:30.

5.  Snowing some.

6.  I went up and Dr. Vermillion & I finished up report for bus line - Federal Income Tax. Rain & snowing so I took Mother to courthouse. Took Dad to Princeton Post Office to get his check $24.92 this year. I “walked” and went to get Mother who was taking in all day the Roach trial (Courthouse packed)

7.  Snowing all day. I took Mother to court before 8: came back & went to  McComas and in at 2: Went to Princeton arguing the case today. No place  for people to get inside. So full. Finished  everything and jury got the case at  7:15. Came out at 8:30. Murder in the first degree with mercy which makes  it life in pen.

8.  26 above this morning. Really chilly snowing some. We went to SS & church. Tonight we set our clocks & watches up 1 hour for war time. We all go to work on it in the morning.

12.  Very nice day. Dr. Vermillion went to sleep in his car coming from Mrs. Shumate’s on the river outside Princeton on Oakvale Road and run out of road. Ruined his car. He was taken to hospital for x-rays on chest- bruised and skinned up some and home. Very sick man.

13.  Went to Princeton in afternoon & up to see Mrs. Wells and Aunt Emma in hospital.

14.  Very nice day. Went down to see Dr. Vermillion as we went to gym to see Glenville & Concord play. We won 63-60. Had a real time. Referee left the floor 9 minutes before game was over on account of Glenville coach. Gym packed with people. Nearly had a free for all.

15.  Cold & cloudy. Went to SS & church. Dad & I walked over town in afternoon. Visited Mrs. Wells & fixed fire and visited up at Uncle Doc’s a while. Adult choir sang for church and raining hard tonight at 7:30.

16.  Raining & cloudy all day. Missed choir practice at 6:30.

17.  Went to McComas Dr. & I. Scott went to be examined before draft board at 1:00 today in Princeton. Stopped to see Dr. Uriah as we went to see Concord beat Fairmont 53-43. A big game.

18.  Dr. Lilly & Scott went to Roanoke. Dr. Scott was examined before the Navy Board today. Ma & I went to Bluefield shopping. Mrs. Will Oxley died.

19.  Went to McComas today.

20.  Went down to see Dr. Vermillion. Worked most of the day at the office. Went to Mrs. Will Oxley’s funeral at Methodist Church. Went out to Quincy’s to his birthday supper. He was 44 today. Whole family was there. Scott left for Chicago for a week.

21.  Went to Princeton on 9:30 bus. Dad & I to have our eyes seen to. Dad did not have to get glasses and I had drops put in mine & new glasses fitted. Mr.  and Mrs. S.L. McGraw brought me home. Dad came on as soon as he was done.

22.  Singapore was taken by the Japanese. Went to SS & church. Could not see much tho. The Singing Mothers of the church had choir today. They were good. After dinner I went up to BB Scotts. Nobody home. Went out to see Joe & Midge & Dave Vachon awhile. Dempsey Cheatwood very sick in hospital maybe meningitis.

23.  Very nice today. Cold tho. I went over to office & help fix up ins. Policy and bus papers.

24.  Cold snowed some today a lot. Got my new glasses today. Mullens beat Athens High tonight. Went to gym to see Salem beat Concord. A good game tho. Dad did not go.

25.  I went over and worked again all day on ins policies fixing (endorsement) I wrote 12 on typewriter. Dr. Vermillion came up in afternoon for a while. First time in 2 weeks tomorrow.

26.  18 temp. Cold. Went to McComas. Andy Sheppitt told us goodbye today- leaving to enter the Navy at Norfolk. Scott came in tonight from Chicago Ill.

27.  Cold Snowing some all day. Went over town afternoon a while. Elkhorn beat Athens Hi tonight. Benny Reed had 2 wrecks going & coming. Snowing at 7:00.

28.  Snowing this morning. Temp 22. We went to McComas and started home at 12:30 by Matoaka. Could not get up hill from Thomas and men helped us turn around and we came by Bluefield& saw a big Greyhound bus over the bank in Bluefield. So many wrecks. Slick.

March

1.  Temp 26. March came in bad. Snowing but warmer. Went to SS & church. In afternoon I took Dad over to fix his fire and I loafed with Mastin. Bob Vermillion seriously ill in Memorial Hospital. A complete stroke in one side. I went to church at 7:00. Stopped to see Mrs. Wells as I went along.

2.  Cloudy early. Temp 26. The Mercer McDowell and Mingo Dental Society met in Athens today with the Drs. Lillys. 28 present. Went to snowing at 11:30 and did it carry on the rest of the day. Ma & I went to Princeton at 10:20 for to pay Dr. Ben- Pd. For glasses and got groceries & cow feed & chick feed. I went over for Dad after visiting Uncle Tip awhile. Had radio fixed by Blaine Jennings. One of the worst nights in many a year. Athens Hi beat Shady Spring tonight. Last game of the season.

3.  Temp 22.This was worse day in many years. I worked at office all day. Up early dressed - high boots- and started for town. Wind hi snowing drifts and still at it. We did not go to McComas. Roads blocked to Princeton all day.  1 car got out to Princeton early about 5:00. Bus never made a trip. Mail did not get in. 1 bread truck came to Shumate Hill and Hight took wrecker and pulled him in. Report that all roads in the 10th dist -Closed. No school in co. I have never seen such snow drifts. Jessie marooned in Princeton tonight. Could not get in from Narrows work.

4.  Boy oh Boy. This is winter. No news.

5.  We are not going to McComas today. Could not get there. Sis & I went to see drifts at Barretts- 20 feet deep.

6.  Road open now to Princeton. Melting a lot. Largest drift in our back yard we have ever seen.

7.  Scott & I started to McComas this morning. Slick. Lee Parker had a wreck up near Barber School. We were 2 hrs. going.

20.  Sister & I went to Bluefield. I stopped to see Dr. Scott awhile. Feeling fine. Dr. Lilly in Charleston today- Bus business.

June

1.  Worked in Athens office. Rained hard today.

5.  We went to Princeton & Bluefield shopping today. Sis went along. Ma & I got hats & dresses.

6.  Went to McComas. Left at 1:30 coming home to Irene Cooper & Charles Bowen’s wedding in the Methodist church. Rained- just poured-. Lightning came in on our light wires & ruined radio socket & burnt quilt on my bed & 1 wire into attic. Had Blaine Jennings to fix everything for us. Mary Jane Hill & Horace Martin were married in Bluefield today.

13.  Went to McComas. Came home at 1:00 to go to Lessie Barker’s funeral & burial. One of the hardest rains fell just before funeral.

27.  Up early. We went to see Gilmer. Jessie & Lodema went along. 3 hours 45minutes going. Gilmer was fine. Got home at 8:00.

29.  Up early and went to work. I took over both offices today for Drs. Lilly & Vermillion. Hattie quit. Rained today.

10.  Raining again and hard. We went out to Ben Reed’s awhile after supper. A large crowd there. A car came in after we got home and was in bed, all but Mother and we don’t know who it was.

11.  A fine day. NO rain. We went to Mae Reed’s funeral at Baptist Church at 2:30. Church full today.

12.  A fine day. NO rain. Went to SS & church. Stayed home rest of day. In afternoon QD, Ennis & Quinzetta came out awhile and after dinner the whole family came and made ice cream. 2 Gallons. Left at 10:00.

13.  Hot today. Working hard. Clyde white and Levi Scott came over to see our hay & calf. I worked up at office from 7-9:30.

23.  Went to SS & church and to Speedway at 2:00 to hear Young preach his last sermon there. Took Philippine Lilly to church today. Went up to Uncle Doc’s for a little while to talk about a little get together of family only.

1.  Rained hard all day. Gas rationed. Started today all over USA. 4 on a card. Really poured rain all day.

2.  Colder. Snowing early and grew colder all day. Wind high too. Worse day I ever saw before Xmas. Temp dropped to 8 above. Zero by bedtime.

3.  2 above zero this morning, not so much snow tho. Got an awful chest cold.

4.  Snowed some. Colder a lot. Temperature 101 tonight. Sick as the dickens.

5.  Snowing today again. Dad & I got some feed after supper. Had to go out by Tip’s alley. Could not get up Caldwell’s alley.

6.  Snowing. Went to SS & I went to office and stayed while preaching was going on. I am sick with a chest cold. Have a temperature. Quincys came out after supper awhile.

7.  Went to office. A real bad day. I am real sick today. Dr. took temp 101 2/4. I laid around most of day. No work to do.

I went home with them. I could not get my car out this morning. Had to walk. Dr. Lilly & Hartley Sanders went to Charleston today.

25.  Christmas. We loafed around until 4:00. Joe & Midge Vachon came over and stayed several hours. We were invited out to Quincys for supper & to see them open their Xmas. Waited till we were present. Then we all went to Princeton to the show. Raining hard.

27.  Rained today. Went to SS & church, home & got supper for Quincys family & Uncle Tip. At 3:00, I went after QD & Ennis in Princeton and took them back at 9:00. Uncle Tip went with me. Raining. Snowed some tonight.

28.  Snow all gone for the first time since the 2nd day of the month. Raining & cloudy all day. Dr. Lilly got message to go to Charleston tomorrow.

29.  Raining. Dr. Lilly went to Charleston to finish up sale of bus lines to Tri City Traction Co. I was supposed to go to McComas and could not get my car out. Dr. Lilly got back at 5:15

30.  Colder some. Report is this was the worse December in many years- since 1917.
