Verlie's Diary

The Queen Mary crossed the Atlantic. Spanish Civil War began. Hoover Dam completed. BBC broadcasts began.

January


1. Sun up and everything melting fast today. Temp this morning at 8:00 was 22. A big new year starting I hope for everybody. Water in bank froze up out under the Macadam road…has been since Saturday night.


2. Raining today.


3. Raining also today… taking off most of the snow.


4. Sun bright most of the day. Dad’s birthday- 64. Raining late in the afternoon. Quincy had my car pulled and started. Es put on a new battery…the old one was dead. Only had it a few months.


5. A very nice day. We went to SS & I stayed for church. Dean came over a while.


6. Very nice day. Rained and sleeted during night. Hardest time I ever had trying to come to work. Trees bare.


7. Rained . Oh boy. Geo Alvis gave me a little dog today- took it home.


8. Rained all day today. Jackson Day Dinner at Sage’s. Democrats met at 6:00.


9. Cleared some. Still snow where it drifted. Rained nearly all day.


10. Colder some. Snowed and sleeted a lot today.


11. Rained late in the afternoon. Went to Princeton at 5 PM for chop corn & groceries. QD and I.


12. A fine day. Went to SS & church. Dean came over in afternoon for a while.


13. Rained a lot today. Cleared up by noon. Mother came over in afternoon for impression so we can make a new plate for her. Virginia Hardware sent for their radio. Wanted to leave one but I would not let them.


14. A very nice day. Clear all day. Dr. Lilly went to Bluefield in afternoon. Amelia Earhart was in town today and tonight.


15. Raining today all day hard. Foster moved his barber tools today from Jennings place and the new beauty parlor will move in. Snow on ground where it drifted. Jessie Wiley & Helen Coburn was married yesterday – Aunt Pearl’s boy. Concord 42- Morris Harvey 36.


16. Sun up early. Ground froze a little and some ice. A nice day. Mrs. Charlie Short is very sick. Also Will Lucus. Nick White doing fine.


17. Cool & froze some this morning. Mama got her new teeth today. Men started today to pave the street between Jennings Drug and the bank lot out to the Bailey line. We went to see High School play Bramwell High- Our boys won.


18. Rained all day today. Dr. AP Meador called that Mr. Earley was dead. Funeral tomorrow. Raining hard at bedtime.


19. Rained hard all night. Sleeting and hail about 9 turning to snow at 10:30. We went to SS and left for Hinton at 5 till 11. I don’t believe I ever saw it snow any harder and getting cold so fast. We only got to Cy Cottle’s and had to turn and come back. Took us 2 hours and 30 minutes to go and come back. Worse day I was ever out. Came over and brought Dad to cut off water in school building at 4:00. D___ missed today.


20. Snowed all night and onto noon today. Beauty Parlor moved in today. Jennings building where Foster used to be. Roy Meador came up and spent the night. Going to Bluefield tomorrow on Federal Grand jury. Dr. John R. Boyd died at Oakvale yesterday.


21. 3 above this morning and everything is so pretty. Frost all over everything. Dr. Vermillion went to Elgood to help bury Dr. Boyd in Eaton Cemetery. King George V died Last night. Men back to work on street beating rock today.


22. 10 above this morning. Wind high today. Started snowing about 4 and continued until late in night. Worse blizzard we have ever had I believe. Quincy’s came out after supper and it was bad when they left. 12 above then and wind awful.


23. 16 below this morning at home. 19 at Jennings Drug Store. Boy oh boy, how cold. 0 zero at noon today. Still cold. Sun bright.

26. Very nice today. Dad & I went to SS and home. Snowing to beat the band. Brown brought Dean over for a while and Helen & Maude came and got him. Lorres Eskew, Mrs. Hensley, & Naomi Anderson sleigh riding in our field today. Arthur Coburn‘s mother was buried at Graham’s Chapel today.


27. 10 below today. Snowed some. Mrs. Charlie Short died at 2:30 today in the Memorial Hospital.

29. 4 below today. Snowing today. Mrs. Charlie Short was buried today. Funeral in Baptist Church and buried in the Athens Cemetery.


30. 2 above today. Everybody ready for the President’s Ball tonight. I can’t go. Have a boil on my leg. Snowed some all day and just after dark snowed for a while.


31. 8 & 12 below this morning. A strong wind. Dec. & Jan. have been the worse straight through I have ever seen in my time. Started Nov. 28 and still going strong looks like.


February


1. 2 below this morn. Dr. E. French, lawyer of Bluefield, dropped dead last night. Radio reported John Kee dead in Washington…False report. Kee not dead. Snowed some after supper.


2. Very nice Temp 14 above. We went to SS & church. Snowed and blew all afternoon. Dean was out for a while in afternoon. Maude came for him at 4:40. He was not feeling so good. Cold at bedtime a lot.


3. Warmer some today and it didn’t snow any. I went to Princeton at noon to Four Shoe Store. Got me 2 pairs of shoes, suede. Mrs. WE Wall died at 12:10 today. A shock to the town…was so sudden. Melting fast and raining a little after dark.


4. Rained nearly all night and still going this morning. Snow going fast- nearly all gone only where it drifted a lot. Top Martin’s home burned up this morning. No one at home. All was here in town. No insurance of any kind. Dr. Lilly gone to Bluefield this afternoon.


5. Clear all day. Cold tho.


6. A very nice day. We went to gym to see Mullens play Athens High. We won by 1 point. 25-24. Oh, what a game. Such a crowd was there also. Dr. Lilly left at 7:30 from Princeton going by bus to Charleston for 2 days. Started snowing about 7 and did it pour. About 3 inches when the ballgame was over.


7. Up and oh what a big snow from 15 to 20 inches and more in places. Turned out school at 10:30. No kids could get in. I cleaned floors in office and 2 coats waxed and polished 2 this afternoon. Did a good job. Boy but I had a time getting to office & home today. 45 minutes coming over, No roads broke. Snowed all day.


8. Cold and snow drifting a lot. Today’s goal -finish up waxing my floors and they look so good. Mrs. Dr. Lilly sick and had to have Dr. V. about 4:30. Dr. Lilly came in from Charleston on 8:50 bus tonight.


9. Up and went to SS & church. Dr. Lilly, Mrs. Lilly, Jr. & Mary Ann all sick. Flu. Dr. V was to see them. Quincy’s kids came out and went sleigh riding some. Dean missed today.


10. Colder this morning. 6 above. 4 degrees at 6:00. Dr. Lilly’s folks no better. Dr. V was down this morning. Mr. Eskew, my renter, was called back to work at the shops today in Princeton.


11. 4 above this morning. Not melting any. Water froze up at Eskew’s and Fred Gautier’s. Went out and thawed it up for them. So cold and wind high. Mailed my state tax check today. Dr. Vermillion busy today. 2 trips to Dr. Lilly’s today.


12. 6 above this morning. Thawed some during day. Not much tho.  All still sick at Dr. Lilly’s.


13. Raining and freezing this morning, I went down to Dr. Lilly’s a while. Mrs. Lilly real sick. Also Jr & Dr. Lilly have flu. I also went over to see Skippy and Jerry . They are so sick. Warmer ad raining a lot at noon. Sloppy and messy. Raining all afternoon & on until late bedtime. Jennings took back radio today. Back to store to try out. Quincy came in & out with his car to make tracks.


14. Raining yet this morning and foggy. Jerry Jennings has pneumonia. Dr. Lilly’s folks are some better. Dr. V says. I have got 3 valentines so far. Daddy and I went to college to see Athens High beat Matoaka. Sure was a good game. Trickey was there and came home to spend the night. Daddy & I killed a pole cat going to the gym. Rained on us both ways- had to walk.


15. Snowed a little during night. Ground gray, nearly covered, Brought car out. Started okay this morning and went out last night. Quincy took car and went to Princeton and we went after supper and got some shoes. Sale at Four Shoe Store. Wyatts were shot to death in Matoaka tonight by son in  law. And he died on Sunday.


16. A very nice day. Froze a little early this morning. We went to SS & church. Left car on hill. After supper we will go to church. Dean came at 1:15 and left before 4. ? Trouble in the air.


17. Rained all day. Dr. Lilly came to office today. Not able to work much tho. We took car and went to gym to see Bluefield beat Concord 49-44 in a dandy game. Had a time getting the car out but finally made it. Raining when we came in from game. Jerry’s temperature to 105 & 6


18. Up and 3 or 4 inches of snow this morning and wind. Snowing hard. 12 above at 8:00. Dropped to 7 above by bedtime. We went to help Quincy start his car and got stuck 3 times getting out Broadway.


19. 2 above this morning at Dr. Vermillion. Sick folks are all better today.


20. Very nice day. 10 above. Fred Cooper to have his tonsils out. I had another spell on Dr. Lilly about 11:25. Dr. Lilly all be himself. Dr. Vermillion came and took me home at 3 and I stayed in bed rest of day.  Dean and Hattie came over after supper to see me a while. Also Betty Ball & Gussie Steele. Daddy & Dean went to high school game at college. We won. Roy Meador came for a while in the afternoon.


21. I stayed in bed all day. Dr. came over to see me in afternoon a while. Several came to see me-so many called up too. Jerry Jennings died this morning of pneumonia at 7.


22. Quincy came out and took me to the office and I made It  all right. Jerry Jennings was buried today. Fire alarm today. MC Oxley’s flu burning out. Was all quite an excitement for awhile. Athens High went to Mullens and won the game there tonight by 1 point. Dean, Maude, & Ruth Beckett went, so I heard.


23. A fine day. Went to Princeton to have Dr. Todd give me an examination and he found me okay. Best ever he said. Came home and loafed rest of day. Dean did not come today.


24. A very nice day. Snow yet in drifts.


25. Cold today. Ed Wirtz & Quincy killed our pig today. Weighed over 200 lbs. They also fixed the water spigots at home and at Eskew’s.


26. A fine day out. Best day since Nov. Sun out bright.


27. R ained during the night but very nice day. Wind high tho. Athens High played  Elkhorn High tonight. Athens won 25-23. Oh boy, what a game.


28. A fine day so nice and bright. Mud all dried up mostly. Dr. Sam left for hospital at Radford this afternoon for a few days. JA Mace died at 3:35 this afternoon.


29. A fine day. Ray Cheatwood left for Pineville at 5:00 with a load to see Athens High play Pineville and we won. Daddy and I went. We had lots of fun. Got home at 2 Sunday morning.


March


1. A fine day. Went to SS & stayed for church. After dinner we came over to Baptist church to JA Mace’s funeral. Loafed until after 5 after it was over. Came to church at 7:30 to hear Mayberry at Methodist. Dean did not come again today.


2. A fine morning. Rained in the afternoon tho.


3. A fine day. Sun bright. Daddy & I went with Ray Cheatwood to Elkhorn to last game.

5. Raining some today. Jennings bought the Masonic Hall today and went to work taking it down. Dr. Lilly took Mrs. Lilly to see Dr. Jim Vermillion this afternoon. Found her to be real sick.


6. Dr. Lilly took Mrs. Lilly to Bluefield to the Bluefield Sanitarium. She is very sick. Has mastoid trouble. Has to give her a blood transfusion. High School tournament starts tonight. 4 Games.


7. A fine day. Mrs. Lilly was operated on today for mastoid infection. In the afternoon Bluefield beat Athens, Princeton beat Matoaka. Clayton got mad, nearly had trouble. And tonight….Princeton beat Bluefield to win the honors and Athens High won over Matoaka. Consolation game. Patton White ate supper with us.


8. A fine day. Wind cold tho. We went to SS & I stayed for church. After dinner we loafed around home a while and went for a ride out on Oakvale Road. Had lots of fun. Got home at 4:30 and stayed there. Went to bed soon as Major Bowes was on. Dean failed to come today.


9. A fine day. No news much. Dr. Lilly was in Bluefield until noon today with Mrs. Lilly. She is doing fine. The night watchman at the college had a wreck up on the road with his motorcycle and is in hospital with a broken leg. Too much speed.


10. Very nice day, Frogs hollering. One of my crocuses in bloom in the yard. Raining this morning right much. 


11. Raining today some. Cleared up and was nice in the afternoon. We came over to Short’s place after supper a while. Seen Dean a few minutes asked for consultation as soon as possible.


12. Up this morning and a big surprise. Ground covered with snow and still pouring. Snow squalls all day off & on…pretty tho.


13. A big snow this morning sure enough. Snowing hard this morning. Cleared up and melted a lot. Aileen Jennings got her a permanent wave in Bishop’s shop today,


14. A very nice morning & day. Snow nearly all gone this afternoon. We came over town after supper a while for groceries.


15. A fine day. Went to SS & church. After dinner we just loafed around the house. After supper Daddy, QD, Jessie & I went for a ride up the road. Mama did not go. Did not see Dean today.


16. Cloudy & clear. Put time in today. May rain. My crocuses are blooming nicely. Raining today a lot. Went to Princeton to Cut Rate and got me a permanent. QD drove for me. Raining hard at bedtime. 


17. Rained all night and sleeting at 8:30 this morning. Turning to snow at 9 and snowed hard all day and blew and sure had a bad winter day. On all afternoon and the worse night we have had all winter. Lights off and on all afternoon and went off at 7 tonight for a little while. Snowing & blowing worse we ever saw. Dr. Vermillion took Dad & I to the hill and did we have a time from there down. Hailed at home 8:00 tonight also.


18. Up and still snowing hard. No school today in county. 25 or 30 cars stuck in snow drifts between here and Princeton and had to stay all night and such a time today trying to get them all out. Mail got here at 11:00. Road plow came thru at 10:45. Dr. Lilly started at 3:00 for Bluefield with Mrs. Lilly to have her head dressed and Hensley got stuck too and they had to turn around & come back upon Shumate Hill. Snowing all afternoon and blowing so hard. Worse time yet this winter even if it isn’t so cold.


19. Still snowing this morning early… about 3 inches more this morn. Wind quieted down early in night and saved so much drifting. No school today. Floods everywhere… Pittsburg, Johnstown, Wheeling, North Carolina and Ohio and everywhere. Millions of dollars damages. People drowned and everything pitiful to hear it over the radio.


20. Snowing early this morning. Cleared up and melted a lot. Went to raining in afternoon turning to snow again and simply poured rest of afternoon and night. Wind high & drifting again. Dr. Lilly took Mrs. Lilly to Bluefield. Hensley left for Huntington. Call there was a death. Mrs. Hensley’s brother’s boy. He may make it & he may not.


21. Snowed all night. 4 or 5 inches of snow fall during the night and still snowing this morn. Cleared up about noon and is melting a lot. So much of the snow went off. But oh the floods everywhere. It is the most terrible thing I ever heard of, except the war.


22. Warmer a lot thru morning. We went to SS & stayed to hear Dr. Packard in Hensley’s place as they are in Huntington where there is a death in Mrs. Hensley’s family. After dinner, Mama & I went over to see Mrs. Lilly a while and stopped at Eskew’s a while. Mrs. Eskew is sick in bed. Uncle Joe came in at 8:30 for the night. A surprise to us!


23. Cloudy, rained a little then cleared up and is real pretty. Warm & nice. Dr. Lilly in Bluefield to Dental Meeting of the 3 counties …should have been in February. Mr. Jennings nearly got the Masonic building torn down.

28. A fine day. Sun out. I brought the car over town myself. Nettie Rose Oxley got a permanent today- Bishop’s Shoppe. We went over to Princeton after supper a while shopping- found nothing tho.


29. A fine day. Went to SS & church. After dinner we, Quincy driving, went down to the farm, looked around a while. Let Trickey’s and Tom’s folks stay on this year if everything is satisfactory. Came home and washed the car and stayed home. Ambulance came & took Mr. Eskew to the hospital. Very sick.


30. A fine day. No rain this morning. So nice. Jim Campbell came down a while after supper, says “Devil” is better.


31. Raining today early. Cleared off nice. Hauptmann to die at 8:30 tonight. Was given 48 hours reprieve for slaying, kidnapping Lindberg baby in New Jersey. Went up to the hospital to see Mr. Eskew a few minutes… so bad no company allowed. May not make it thru the night.


April


1. Raining hard this morning early. Cleared up tho by 9 and was real pretty. April showers bring May flowers. Alma is ordering me a knit dress today.


2. Rained all day.


3. Raining turning to snow and we had real snow squalls every 10 to 15 minutes all day. Ladies gave the Men’s Bible Class a supper at 6 o’clock tonight. 16 men present. Snowing so hard about 8. Bruno Richard Hauptmann died at   


4. 4 inches of snow today. All gone by night tho. Went to Princeton after supper to look around for an Easter outfit. Found nothing.


5. A very nice morning. Went to SS & church. After dinner we went over to Quincy’s a while. Wind high & raining some. Ate supper. The wind blew the hardest I ever heard, Raining too.


6. A very nice day. Dr. Vermillion gone to Roanoke to a clinic for 2 days.


7. A fine day. Dr. Lilly took Mrs. Lilly to Bluefield today again for treatment. Dr. Vermillion came in this evening from Roanoke.


8. Raining today. Ed Wirtz papering the Burch property room & halls.


9. Raining today. Ed Wirtz finished living room & hall today. Brought Mr. Eskew home today.


10. A very nice day. Rained during night. Dad with Parker, Lacy, QD, & Jessie put up most of our part of line fence between Lee Oxley and us. I went to Princeton to see about my permanent …seems not to be holding to do any good. Grover Lewis’s came in about 7:15 for the night. Went out to Quincy’s about 10:30 for a while.


11. Raining this morning. Up and left for Bluefield at 5 o’clock taking Grover to catch 6 o’clock bus. Quincy drove my car 35 minutes going over & 35 coming back. Selling all of stock left at Short’s store at 2 PM. Auctioning it off. Went to Princeton after supper shopping. Mama has cold…didn’t go.


12. Raining – Easter- and hailed morning & afternoon. We went to SS- 120 present & church. After dinner Dad and I went for a ride over Princeton. I drove for the first time since February 20 that I have left town with it. Lots of Easter frocks. Uncle Joe, Doc & Roy came up for a while. Jessie & I went to church at the Methodist. Rev. Martin from Princeton started a meeting  for 2 weeks.


13. Clear and very cool. Cloudy later today. Daddy finished our part of line fence between Lee Oxley and us.


14. The best day yet. Pretty sun hot. Spring I believe is here now. Trench Mouth is on the rampage here in town now. Sent a note to Dean today by QD. Grover came in from NC. Spent the night with us.


15. Another fine day. No rain for 3 days now. Grover caught a bus at 8 from Princeton for Mullins. We took him to Princeton. A real wind storm & rain storm about 5 o’clock. Didn’t last long. We all went to Princeton to see magician hang in front of theater and get out of a straightjacket and do all kinds of tricks. QD and I went to the show at 11:30 to 1 in the night. Sure was good.


16. A fine day. Got a note from Dean today. Seen him and had a talk after supper. Explained everything is good from A to Z. He didn’t like some of it but finally gave in and confessed. Snowed today some.


17. Snowing this morning. Got real news bulletin from Dean today. 7 pages. Sure was interesting and will save for a souvenir. Colder a lot. Came over town to a SS meeting in the office and went to church at Methodist.


18. Snowing squalls all morning and froze the flowers some. Got hand brush from Fuller brush man for laboratory in office. My hyacinths are so pretty in my yard. Cold and stayed home after supper.


19. No rain today. A fine day. Went to SS & church. Anti Saloon man talked at the service hour. Methodists all came up- church full. Went to see Marx Brothers at the show. Never saw such a crowd. Dean called for me only a few minutes after we left. Went to church at  Methodist. Revival still on.


20. A fine morning. Cool. Geo Thompson came early to plough field for corn. Mama and I went to church at Methodist.


21. A fine day. Geo finished ploughing field for corn today. Raining a little as we went home from work.


22. Snowing today. Real pretty. Sleeted & snowed 30 years ago today also. Alice Lee Holdren’s birthday. Maude Pettrey came over after supper and we went for a ride. Had a talk about everything. All gossip. She remembers saying nothing. Mary Wilson & Claude’s wife came over a while after supper. Mama gave her a wash board.


23. A big frost this morn. Geo Thompson came to plow our garden today. A nice day cool tho. Ground froze a lot and ice.


24. A fine day, no wind today. Dr. Vermillion & Fred Cooper, Ed Via & Tom went to Charleston for Dr. Tom to take the Shrine. Dr. Lilly went to Bluefield with Mrs. Lilly to see Dr. Her last trip to see about her ear. We went to church at Methodist. Mama & Dad put out onions & cabbage today. No school today in the county. Teachers meet in Princeton.


25. Another dandy day. Tom Hazelwood came up by 7:15 this morning to see about farm. They are in a row again. Went to Princeton after supper a while.


26. A fine day. We went to SS and left right away and went to the farm to straighten out things. Got home at 4 minutes to 1. While eating dinner, in came Dean without any notice at all. Spent most of the afternoon. Went to Methodist for church- Last night of the revival- several there.


27. A fine day so pretty.


28. Came over town after supper a while today. No news much of interest.


29. A fine day- warming up a lot. Dr. Holdren got a letter that Claude was seriously ill.


30. A fine day. A message came for the folks to come to Huntington to see Claude. They left at 6 o’clock. Raining a little bit. Came over town after supper. Loafed a while with Quincy’s. Watching for Geo Bauguess to buy cow from him.


May


1. A beautiful day. Dr. Holdren came in this morning and Claude died at 2 last night… 45 minutes after they got there. Dr. Lilly gone to Princeton all morning and to Rock and other points in afternoon. We and Grover went up to Dr. Holdren’s a while after supper. Quincy’s cow came in from Geo Bauguess tonight. Vergie Oxley got a permanent in her hair today over at Bishop’s.


2. Another nice day, so warm. Claude’s body got in at 1:00 today. Went to Princeton for flowers for Claude and stopped at Uncle Doc’s …several there.


3. A beautiful morning early and we went to SS and did it rain while there. Then we went on up to Holdren’s and home. Left for Elgood at 1:00. Raining when we left. One of the largest crowds ever there for a funeral & burial and it was nice. Dean drove my car and we went up on the road after we got back from Elgood. Came over town after supper and did it rain. Went to Princeton with Elsie Beckett to have some tires adjusted for Roy. Marylee missing and we could not find her anywhere.


4. Colder a lot and cloudy today. Packards, Sarvey , Chidesters, Rogers were all in a wreck last night. Some in hospital. Bill Coburn had a girl killed in a auto wreck in VA Saturday & buried at the Athens Cemetery today. Put out early cabbage today. Mowed the yard. Colder a lot by night. Mrs. Litford died at Mrs. Daisy Higginbotham’s last night. Only there a few hours and died.


5. Cool this morning but was a very nice day. We mowed the cemetery and lane and went out to Quincy’s a little while after supper.


6. A fine day. Went to Princeton during noon hour for paint for house where Eskew’s live. Alma Clark died and will be buried in the Athens Cemetery today - we went. Fount Snider died this afternoon. Called Dr. Vermillion but he did not get there. We put in 4 rows of corn today.


7. A fine day. Boy it is warm now. Dr. Lilly went to the hot house for plants. Got me some tomatoes -12


8. Another hot day. Went to Bluefield this morning with Elsie Beckett & Mrs. Tom Beckett shopping. We got back at 11:15. Got myself 1 suit - Palm Beach Suit.


9. A fine day. Sprinkled a little. We planted our field of corn today with 2 planters. Cost about $30.00


10. A fine day. Mother’s Day. Went to SS & church. Such a large crowd present for church. After dinner we laid in the shade in the yard and about 3 Uncle Joe & boys came. Also, Quincy’s. Marion Oxley’s farm burned all over today. After supper Dean came over a while without any warning. Stayed until 10:45.


11. Rained some today…helped a lot.


12. Primary election. Rained again this afternoon. Very nice rain. Lots voting today. Quincy & family came at 2 this morning. Had to leave home. Earl Umberger scared them out. Stayed all night with us. We came over town after supper a while and some officers came and got Earl Umberger again.


13. Rained again today…hard. John Wirtz & Joe Eades are tied for Justice of the Peace. Crumpecker nominated by big vote for Sheriff. Alexnder came in third. Went up to Eskew’s awhile after supper. Dave and Joe Vachon took us home.


14. A very nice day. Henry Crawford & John Wirtz took Earl Umberger to Spencer today. Went to Princeton at noon for paper & paste for Ed. Millard Lambert died today in Princeton. Ed Wirtz is papering two rooms where Eskew’s live in my house.


15. Cold this morning. Lots of frost in low places. Some in town. Cleaned out my pool after supper. Cleaned wax off of all floors in office. Elbert Oxley helped me with gasoline. Ready to paint now.


16. Cold this morning too, believe me. After supper we went up to cemetery and mowed Uncle Dee’s plot off. Came down and stopped at Uncle Doc’s and Roy Beckett’s drained anti -freeze out of radiator. About 9 went to Princeton in Quincy’s car… All but Mama…She loafed in our car in front of Brown’s Store . Got home about 10:15.


17. A fine day. Went to SS & church. Ed Wirtz painted the office floors this morning. After dinner, Dean came and took me to a church meeting at 2 and then we drove over to Princeton to see the big airplane…biggest in the world they say. After supper we went to church. Mr. & Mrs. Bibbee & Ruby Beckett was baptized. Not many there. Dr. Lilly left for Fairmont State Dental meeting – 2 days.


18. Rained a little late in the afternoon & night. We went to the Unity Program at the Baptist church at 8. Thundering and lightning bad.


19. Rained right much during night and this morning. Scott and I waxed 2 of the office floors. Ed Wirtz came and put on another coat on operation room…no gloss on it.


20. Cold this morning, nearly frost. Dr. Lilly to come in today at 8:30 at night.


21. A fine day. Dr. Lilly back at office and got a big cold in his head. Had a nice trip he said. Spent Monday night in Clarksburg with Geo. Pierce. Sprayed all of our beans, potatoes & things in garden . Dean called but I was out.


22. A fine day. Junior-Senior banquet of the high school at Sage’s tonight. QD went and had a big time. No dance after this one. We came home and found Monk Fletcher drunk standing in front of the house.


23. Another day. No rain. Went to Princeton after supper a while shopping. Came home early.  Announcements made today of the engagement of Harvey Rice to Dorothy Dillard of Bluefield.


24. Cool today. Went to SS & church. Dr. Johnnie McGraw preached for Hensley while away. After dinner Dean came over and the folks from Hinton also and Quinzetta. We went to Quincy’s and on to High School sermon in Methodist church. McCary speaker, church full of people.

31. Cold this morning. Lizzie Shepherd called at 5 for me to go with them to Tralee for the day and all left at 7:30. Had a big day. Grover came home with us. Dean came over and I was gone. Ha-Ha…serves him right. Got home at 7:45. Quincy’s came out a while. Dr. Vermillion left for Richmond, Va.

1. Cold yet this morning. Ed Wirtz painted Dr. V. floors. We went to the college for the commencement plays. A packed house…play no good.

3. A fine day. Hot tho. Went to commencement exercises at the college. Nice crowd there. Dr. Vermillion came in today from Richmond at 3:15. Raining some tonight.

Saw lots of things: about 50 or 75 mules in one field. Sure was a sight to see. Had lots of fun. Went out to Quincy’s after supper awhile. Doc, Roy & Uncle Joe came up awhile in the afternoon.

1. Everything nice and wet.


2. Still wet and things surely growing. Charlie Anderson married Mrs. Owens over at Dr. Saris. Raining again tonight.


3. Rained all night and most all day…a good rain. Dog days set in today. Came over town after supper and up to Dr. Holdren’s a while. Alfred Alvis married Bernice Lilly Lovern a day or so ago.


4. Up early. Lizzie Shepherd called at & saying they were coming for dinner. Also, Fred Ball, Willie & 3 kids was there for dinner. We had a big fourth. Stayed to home all day. Alma Jennings Keagels went to housekeeping in Bluefield today. Dean came over after supper awhile and we drove over to Princeton and back. Quincy plowed and planted his beans today in our upper lot.


5. Clear and lots of wind. Went to SS & church. Dean came over and we drove over to Lake Shawnee and around for a while. Back at 4:30. QD drove us out for a while after supper and back.


6. Rained, hailed, lightened and thundered a little bit of everything nearly all night. Narrows, Pearisburg and over through there, hail ruined apples, windows and trees. We & kids & Elsie went to Princeton to the carnival. Had lots of fun. Got home at 11:30. Dr. Vermillion gave us cabbage plants and we put them out after supper- Dad & I.


7. Cool this morning. Nice too. Came over to SS council meeting. Loafed awhile and went home.


8. Hot today and dry. Went to Princeton after supper to have key to car made and look over Hotpoint- and over to carnival till 11:00. QD & sis went with us.


9. 90 in the office. I went with Dr. Vermillion to Everett Farley’s to fix him up after he fell from a wheat stack. Worked our corn again today. Put in new Hotpoint today. Like it fine. Mowed yard and worked around yard & flowers.


10. 93 in office today. Hottest since the drought. Zach Butler 82 died last night at Hilltop. Rained and a lot of wind tonight.


11. Hot after another shower during the night. Quincy took Neta to Hinton to have her tonsils out. Dr. Lilly went to Mr. Butler’s funeral this afternoon. We all went to Princeton after supper to the carnival. Oh boy, what a crowd there. We stayed for the free act.


12. Hot today. We all went to SS and church and down to Fred Rogers for dinner. We had a big time. Left for Hinton at 25 to 2. Got Neta and drove out to Uncle Joe’s and left at 10 to 4. Was 2 hours coming back. Went and came thru country- rough too. After supper we went up the road for a drive and down to Quincy’s awhile & home. Had such a headache.


13. Hot again today. Nation’s death 871 due to heat. Cloudy & thundering at 3 PM. Rained a very nice shower. QD & I went to Princeton about 4:30. Got me 2 print dresses.


14. Hot 92. Hottest day in office since drought. Got 2 ripe tomatoes out of garden. Aunt Bess & Uncle Moody came for supper. Left at 8:00. We drove over to Quincy’s a while after they left.


15. Rained in the night a little. Hot 90 in the office. Ethel Martin, Verena & their 3 kids came up about 10. Left at 4. I went over for dinner. He-Man’s Party at Mercer Healing Springs. Dr’s both went.


16. Rained a little but early this morning. Nation’s death totals to now 3000 and a few. Elbert Dobbins & a Griffith girl got married yesterday. We had a bean stringing for Mama to can tomorrow.

She is real pretty. Came over and went down to Quincy’s after supper and had ice cream. Sure was good - 2 gallons.


27. A very nice day. Hot tho- 90 and a good breeze stirring. After supper we went down to college to see a game of softball.


28. Hot 91 in office and a good breeze. Spread tar between bank & Jennings Drug Store today on street. A big rain came about 5:00 and lots of wind. A cloudburst over near Beckley killed 2 and up in the northern part of the state windstorm – several hurt 3 killed.

30. A nice day, cold tho and cloudy. Went to Princeton at noon for pecan pie & other things for picnic. Sunday School of Baptist Church had a picnic at Mercer Healing Springs. Left at 4 to 4:30. I arrived to go but all left me so I stayed at home and helped Mama put up 1 bu. Peaches. 20 qts.



31. Cold today also. Summer Training School is out today. They had a big time. Joe Vachon gave Daddy a big watermelon and took him home. All ended well.


August


1. Cool yet. No news much. We went to Princeton after supper a while to finish up for the day tomorrow. I drove alone with Mama & Pa.


2. Up early and ready for SS and then we left for Elgood. Dean drove to White-Steele- Meadows reunion & homecoming. Such a crowd- was a sight. After supper Quincy’s came out. Dean came over for his coat that he left in my car and we all ate watermelon and had a big time.


3. Rained some today. Uncle Lacy Lewis is very sick.


4. A fine day. The folks took Uncle Lacy to see Dr. Todd and after an examination said he had a thyroid condition.


5. Fine weather. No news tho.


6. Rained a good shower during night. Sure was a relief. Came over town after supper a while.


7. A fine day. After supper we, Dad & I & Elsie Beckett, went down to see Uncle Lacy. He is so bad, did not know us.


8. Up early at 6:30 and went for Wilma Hutcheson to go to nurse Uncle Lacy. Dr. Fred is waiting on him beginning today. Came over town to loaf a while and Lizzie called for us to come and we left at 10 and went down and spent the night with him. At 10 his temperature was 105. 


9. Went to bed at 6:00 and slept until 9. Up and dressed for SS and we then left at 11:30 and went down to Uncle Lacy’s for the afternoon. So many folks there and Uncle Lacy so bad…temp. 105. We left about 5. After supper Dean came over and brought me two sections of honey and was it nice.


10. Hot and dry. Uncle Lacy still holding his own, only weaker. Uncle Lacy only alive at 8 tonight.


11. Uncle Lacy died at 1 this morning. I took Mama and Dad down at noon and they came back with Mrs. Rogers and did it rain down there. Only a shower here. Dad & I went down after supper a while with Elsie to sit in the front seat to help me in case of a faint. So many people there and so many flowers. Dr. LR Holroyd was taken to jail today for drunkenness and threats.


12. A fine day. All ready and left for Elgood at noon. We went to church & waited for the crowd- afraid of meeting folks on hill. Funeral at 2. Mayberry & Looney talked. Largest crowd ever at Elgood. Uncle Hade married a girl a day or so ago and was put in jail at Pineville and couldn’t come so Aunt Alice & Marylee said. Sick when we got home but had to come over town after supper. Got 1 bu cucumbers from Lonnie – was nice ones.


13. A fine day. Hot tho. Went down to Quincy’s awhile and took them some corn and tomatoes. And over to high school to Democrat Dance I did not go in. Sat in the car and watched awhile.

16. A fine morning. Went to SS & church. Gave Hattie Scott & Mary Wilson some gladiolas. Sure were prize winners- so pretty. Went home and ate dinner and waited for Dean to come and drive us to the Lilly reunion and he failed to show up. So at 2 we went to bed and slept until 4. Quincy’s came and we got up and had a lot of fun messing around At 5:30, we went over to Quincy’s and made 2 gallons of ice cream. A rain came up and one of the prettiest sunsets ever anyone ever saw. Golden yellow and a rainbow too. Dean went out home but he got disappointed like we did in afternoon. I was not there. Goody. Goody.


17. A fine morning after the shower last night. Jessie & Dad is building a coal & wood house- have torn down the old wood shed. I went home. Put on Dad’s overalls and mowed the yard and in came Roosevelt. Explained everything for yesterday. 


18. Hot day. Dr. Lilly took MaryAnn & Richard to have their tonsils out today. He will be gone all day. Winnie Cox “showed” his “lumber camp” on Maupin’s building tonight. I cleaned and eased the operating room good. Dr. Vermillion, Dr. Lilly & I all have a boil on us at this writing. Mine on jaw, Dr. Lilly on arm. Dr. V. on back of neck.

21. A hot morning. Daddy put top on wood shed. I went to Princeton to get my hair fixed. A new permanent- no cost for it- the other one did not do good. I left at 3 for Aunt Rosie’s . She went also Jessie & QD took us. Had a good shower & hail & wind about 2. Grover & Earl came in about 8 and did we have fun.


22. A fine day. Hot tho. Joe White, Charlie Parnell, & Ray Cheatwood came to appraise Uncle Lacy’s estate. After dinner they left and the girls and boys left for Princeton to the show. Grover & Aunt Rose, Lizzie and I were all that were there and we liked to have roasted. It was so hot.


23. Up early and left for “Daddy” Shepherd’s. Had a nice time. Beulah & I went with Lizzie & Bill. Got back to Aunt Rose’s about 5 and left for home about 7. Dean was waiting for me and we went out Quincy’s for a while.

1. Warmer some today. Dr. Lilly gone to court in Princeton. Ben Reed vs. State Road condemnation suit. Ben Reed got $1500 for right of way through his place. Dean got sick during the night and had to have Dr. Vermillion up to see him. Came over with Broadway folks to see about road. Some got hot. Started 2 gallons wine.


2. Everybody went to Lewisburg fair today. Dr. Lilly & family Dr. Vermillion & family. I cleaned & waxed the floors and cleaned the office all over. Rained all day here beginning about 10:30. I got slacks today from Sears & Roebuck. Dean came over and brought me a birthday present- a cute manicure set, genuine leather, real nice.


3. A fine day. We went hunting – Dean, & Quincy & Dad & I.


4. A fine day. Alleen Jennings got a school today. Such a shock to her. Went to association over on the hill. Heard German preacher. Dean went with us. Quincy’s came out with Dean along and we all went a hunting down in the field with QD’s dog. This was last night.

8. A fine day. Training School & all county schools took up today. Dad janitor yet in Training School. He has a new furnace to fire this year. Good for him. Not so hard to build fires this year.

10. A hot day. Ruby Hall was shot and died in a hospital in Princeton- one of Stewart hall’s girls. Went out to Quincy’s awhile after supper. Made ice cream. Sure was fine.


11. Hot again today. Dr. Lilly went to Princeton with Mrs. Lilly to see about her eyes- gone all afternoon. Came over town and had my hair set. Smithson -her new shop over drug store- real nice. Dean loafed a short while with us. Also, DC & Quincys.

13. A hot day, no wind. Went to SS & church. Dean came over in afternoon. I took Mama up to Methodist church to funeral of Bess Gore Cook who died Thursday night. We went for chinquapins and did we nearly roast. Came home and loafed around for a while after supper. Dad, Ma & I went down to Uncle Bert’s to get him to come and cut our corn.

Came home about 5:00. Grover Lewis called in for 10.00 today to be wired to him in North Carolina. Aunt Rose tried but Western Union closed. Dad and I went down to the farm and looked around and Lucille came home with us. That is Trickey’s girl.

Dean driving to Dunns to funeral & burial of Hobart at 2:30. Several went from here. “Jirkey” Louis and Tom Chambers came at dinnertime. Dean came over after supper awhile.

27. Cold tonight-froze. Plenty of ice. Flowers all ruined.


28. Cold today. Snowed out near Beckley yesterday. Dr. Lilly sick. Went to Bluefield Sanitarium to be examined. Stomach ache. Very sick, we think. Cold tonight.


29. A very nice day. Dr. Lilly gone back to hospital to have exam finished and x-rays. He does not have ulcers as was first expected. I waxed waiting room & office floors today. Daddy got his September check from the county. First check was lost. This was a duplicate.


30. Cold this morning. Whittakers moved out of Burch property and sent keys down yesterday and rent paid in full today.


31. A fine day. Nice & warm. After supper, we drove over to Princeton to take in Halloween. Sure was some crowd and all had fun. Dean went with us. Sprinkled rain a little bit.


November


1. Raining today right much. Went to SS & church and home. Dean came over and we stayed home all afternoon for once. Went to bed early.


2. A beautiful day. So many stirring candidates…Boy, are they thick. Set up to midnite. Mamas and I. Heard Rush Holt, Senator Neely, Gov. Knox, Gov. Alf Landon, Pres. Roosevelt, Jim Farley and many more talk. Last speeches before election tomorrow.


3. A beautiful day- warm & nice- sun hot. And did everybody vote. I believe so. So many on streets all day. We came over town after supper to see the stirring around and there was plenty of it.


4. Cloudy this morning. A landslide for the Democrats is the reports. I went to Princeton at noon and got glass for the Eskew house & other things. Lowell Thomas says biggest vote for Democrats was cast in last 100 years. The whole ticket elected. We got 3 Republicans in Plymouth - all for whole county- Nick White, Perry Martin, Elmer White.


5. Snowed during the night- none on ground but on fences & housetops. Cold--20 this morning. Crumpecker elected sheriff of the county by 3000 majority.


6. A very nice day. We went to see High School lick Narrows  - 12 to 6. Boy some game, believe me.


7. A fine day. Daddy & Charlie Hanks finished shucking our corn today and put it in the crib and barn. We went to Princeton after supper to see Concord play Salem football. We beat 7-6. Boy 0h boy, what a thrill we all got. So nice & warm for the game.


8. Up and Lizzie called they were coming up to spend the day and Dad & I went to SS & home and they were here and it’s raining to beat the band and rained all afternoon. Dean came and we all had a lot of fun gossiping.


9. Cold this morning. Ice a lot & frost.


10. Cloudy some and a big frost and cold.


11. Coldest morning yet. All schools turned out today at 10:00 after a Program- Armistice Day- 18 years ago war was stopped. No news. All students are leaving town this afternoon. Teachers are going to Huntington for 3 day meeting.


12. Raining this morning and some during the night. Dr. Lilly gone all morning to Bluefield. I guess shopping.


13. Rained during the night- a big fog. First news this morning. Gilford Via dead. Died last night at 6 in a Charleston hospital. Meningitis infection. Town in an uproar about it. Can’t hardly believe it. Body will arrive about 5 or 6 tonight. We went down to Ed’s a while after supper. House full of people.


14. A dandy day. Wind high. We all went to Gilford’s funeral at 1 at the Methodist Church and at 3, we all went to Concord 6 vs. West Liberty 7 Football. Boy, what a game. Fire alarm at 6:30.  J.H. Smith house flue on fire. 


15. Up early and snowing. Wind during night. Blew our fodder all over the place. Snowed beautifully most of day. Melted. Turning cold fast- 24 at bedtime. Dean came over and left early tho. Dad and I got turnips and cabbage in about dark.


16. Cold today. Snow melted some. Turned out Training School because furnace would not heat up and plumbers came and fixed it- too much water in the radiators.


17. Plenty snow and cold this morning. 


18. A fine day. Had our hog killed today - she sure was a whopper. Quincy also killed his- Estil Oxley did it.


19. A fine day. Still snow – some in patches. Called Brown Scott to ground sausage for us and he refused and we took it up to Frank Alvis and he did it for us. 


20. Warmer some today. Mother has all of the meat canned and fixed up.


21. Very nice day. Cool tho. After supper QD & I went to Princeton and to the show. Snowed on us as we came home a lot.


22. A very nice day. Cold and wind high. Went to SS & church. Dean came over. After dinner we drove over on Bluefield Road hunting for R.W. Shreve to get a load of coal, but he had moved. Came home and Uncle Joe & Roy came and stayed till about 7:10 and we went to church at the Baptist church. Dean Haughty talked- It was a union meeting and a Thanksgiving Service.


23. Cloudy and Cold today. Looks like snow.


24. A very nice day. Sun warm. Mrs. Hen Martin died this afternoon of a heart attack.


25. A fine day. Cloudy tho. College and all county schools turned out today for the holidays. Dean gave me a big fruitcake.


26. Snowing so pretty this morning. Dad and I fixed all our flowers this morn and dressed and left at 12 for Bluefield to the football game. Bluefield College and Concord. We won 28 to 6. Dean and Bob Oxley came home with us from there.


27. Snowing this morning. Nice and pretty all morning. Temperature - 13. Mrs. HE Martin was buried today. Mrs. Nan Caldwell Kegley died in Bluefield today. Also Aunt Delia White died up at Ed Martin’s today.


28. Temp 10 above this morning. Mrs. Jim Hubbard died in Spencer State Hospital this morning. Snow yet on ground where sun doesn’t hit. Came over town after supper for a bag of chop.


29. A very nice day. Up went to SS and left at 11 for Hinton. Quincy & Neta went with us. I drove both ways. Mama had Doc examine her and also Neta. Both sick. Mama may have to have an operation. Dean failed to show up tonight.


30. Snow and rained some today. Mr. DT Eskew was taken to the hospital Sat night seriously ill and still only alive. Waxed dining room floor tonight.


December


1. A very cold morning- snowing today. Mr. Eskew died at 9:30 this morning. Mr. Hensley & I went to Princeton after Mrs. Eskew & boys at 3:30. Undertaker brought Mr. Eskew in at 6:30. We were there till 10:30.


2. Cloudy & raining. I took some of the Eskews to Princeton at 11:45. Got back at 1:45. I set up at Eskews all night…”Tats” Morgan & Mrs. Lane and I. Raining during night a lot.


3. A very nice day. We all went to funeral and burial of Mr. Eskew. Hurley preached sermon and burial in cemetery in Princeton, Sure was cold there and raining. I was all in after we got home. So tired and sleepy.

5. A very nice day. No news. Only Sid Dickenson is very sick with double pneumonia in Princeton at Lou Wiley’s. Ada Pauley died last night.


6. Raining this day - all day nearly. We went to SS and stayed for church and after dinner Dean came over for a while. Left early. DC was in and he had to go home early. Quinzetta came out for the first time since in September. Ada Pauley was buried today.


7. A bad day. Sid Dickenson only alive.


8. Cloudy & Cold. Dr. Lilly gone all day to McComas to see about his other office.

12. Cold this morning. Snowed some this morning. Sid funeral and burial this afternoon at 2:00 in Baptist Church. Rev. Hensley in charge. Sure was a large crowd there. Put up Christmas lights from Mick or Mack’s to Scott’s store. Sure was pretty. Town dressed up for the first time.


13. Snow yet on ground and foggy. Went to SS and left for Hinton by Shady Spring. Was 2 hours going. Mama is some better. Sunday School collection was $7.03 today -  good. Brown Scott offered 2.00 if we could make it $5.03 next Sunday. We will make him pay. Dean came over at 6:30 and left at 9. Boy was I tired. Drove there and back to Hinton.

15. Still snow. Dr. Lilly gone all day Xmas shopping and other business.


16. Raining this day. Oh I don’t know what is going on. Am writing this with my right hand. QD and I went to Bluefield shopping all morning. Got Mama a nice rug for our Christmas.

18. Colder a lot. Schools are out for holidays today. 


19. Snowed & blew all night. A bad morn. I wore my hi top boots for the first time. Raining- the worst slop you have ever seen. Princeton was bad for shoppers. I stayed home. Raining & turning colder a lot at bedtime.


20. Boy oh boy. What a snow & still at it. We went to SS and had a big time - 105 present. Collection $5.39 + $3.00 - Total $8.39. Old Santa was there too. All had fun. Dean could not get over today. Snow drifts are awful on Broadway. Quinzetta and QD came out a while.


21. What a fall I got this morning coming to work. Only hurt my thumb. Streets so slick. Snow drifted till we had to come up Mrs. Caldwell’s alley.


22. A very nice day, melting some but gets cold by night. Quincys came out and I went to Princeton with them after supper shopping and had lots of fun.


23. Oh no pkgs. for Christmas for me seems like.


24. Melted a lot today. Sloppy and Nasty. Old Santa sure did come to see me.  A serving table, toastie trays and candy. Oh boy.


25. A fine day. I feel so bad all day. No pkgs. Dean came over for dinner and that was nuts. Quincys came also. Went to bed early. Feeling bad.


26. Snow going fast. Worked today.


27. Up & went to SS and we left at 12:00 for Hinton. Dean went this time to help me drive. We drove down and back 2 hours each way. Mama a lot better this time. We went out to Quincys after supper. QD has the mumps bad. Sure was a sight to see.


8. Rained today. No news much.


29. Rained today. Snow nearly all gone where it was drifted so bad.


30. Rained a little today. Muddy roads are a sight everywhere.


31. Rained today also. Dan Maupin’s equipment was sold to highest bidder today. Mrs. Maupin bid it in. Dr. Lilly wanted it. This is the last day of 1936 and another year is gone and everybody’s older.
