Verlie's Diary

Worldwide unemployment doubled. Empire State building completed.

January


1. Snowing early this morning. Dr. Lilly got an alligator in the mail today. I went out to Ray Cheatwood’s for dinner- had a big time. Roads sure were slick coming back 15 to 5 when we came in. Dr. Lilly has a bad break out face. Got my sweater today- a gift.


2. 6 above this morning. Dr. Lilly gone to Princeton most of afternoon. Thawed some but froze hard during night. Mr. & Mrs. Bibbee came in from Florida. Dr. Vermillion went to Bluefield to see Amos & Andy – reported a good show.


3. Warmer today - thawing a lot too. Still lots of snow. Late in the afternoon, we discovered a pair of our forceps gone. Can’t find them in office.  We had company after supper. Came to hear radio--Bird & Co.


4. Lots warmer. Looks like rain. Dad’s birthday. Went to SS and on to Princeton to Pat Hall’s for dinner. 7 present from down this way. Students coming in fast today for school starts in the morning.


5. Rained hard all day. Dr. Lilly sick in bed and Dr. V was over to see him. Mama picked my geese today and if it would turn cold they would freeze. Might have to wrap them with cotton.


6. Colder & snowing this morning. Freezing fast. Quite a change since yesterday. Still snow where it drifted before Xmas. Dr. Lilly still indisposed. Slick as the mischief- worse yet. Snowing hard at dark.


7. Cold this morning, Dr. Lilly able to come over this morning. Was invited out a while after supper. Had some good music. Got home about 10- It sure was cold tonight.


8. Cloudy early today- cleared up later & melted some. The New Year started blue for me. Washed after supper. No use trying to sleep- can’t shut my eyes seems like.


9. Cloudy but warmer. “Sib” Gillespie was caught with 18 gallons in Bluefield yesterday. A blue day for him I bet. Bob Bird had to have one of his legs broke over--too bad. Up to Quincy’s a while.


10. Warmer today. Snow still sticking on in some places. Still snow from Thanksgiving. Going to the big square dance down at the gym. Put on by the faculty members and believe there was a fine crowd there and all had a good time. Got home at 12. Lots warmer.


11. A very nice day. Thawing a lot. Went to Sunday School and church. Rev. Carl Hensley preached. Everyone was pleased with him and extended a call to come to Athens. Uncle Lacy came over and spent the day with us. I laid down after lunch and got up at a quarter to six and hit the hay at 7:45 again.


12. Raining and had snowed a little bit during night. Cloudy all day. We went to the mix at the gym and had a very nice time. Some got mad and did not come back anymore. A large crowd there too. Warmer some too.


13. A bad day- chilly. Several farmers in town but I haven’t seen them yet. Went down to college to the program. Very good and still not much. Went with Jessie Ball & Phyllis.


14. Snowing and colder today. Went down to college after supper to program & singing & stunts which was good. It lasted until 10:30. Sam Alvis, Ray Coburn, and Abe Holdren made their first debut on stage and it was very good.


15. Cold as the dickens today. This finishes up the Farmer’s Week today. Everybody and their children were at the dance. Too many to do good dancing. Balcony full also. Got home at 12:15. Uncle Lacy came home with us.


16. Cold and cloudy. Papa got a terrible cold. Hardly made it through the day. Andrew Thompson and Journey’s girl was married yesterday. 4 eggs.


17. Rained some today- thawing too. Papa in bed all day sick. No news much. Snowed and rained about 4:30 and continued a while up into the night. 5 eggs.


18. Raining today too. Went to Sunday School and back to the office and wrote 3 letters and I got mail and went home. After dinner I laid down and dropped off to sleep. Quincy & Claude Holdren came down a while to see Papa. 4 eggs.


19. Up early and came to over town with Daddy at 6:20 to build fires and straighten up some. Raining about noon and during afternoon & snowed some also. I washed after supper--a big one too. Roads very bad today- worse this year. 4 eggs.


20. Colder. Froze hard during night and am glad it did. Did not thaw hardly  any during day. Uncle Joe is in Texas where I wanted to be if Aunt Bess had not got sick. Guess I won’t get to go now. 5 eggs.


21. Cold and snowing some early. Wind high and blew snow several times during morning. Lots of snow on Flat Top that has been there since Thanksgiving. Got an invitation to dance at Robin’s Rest tomorrow night.


22. A fine day but wind chilly. Mr. Henry brought the other machine today. Sure is good looking. Went to Robin’s Rest to a big dance. 12 people went from here. Got home at 2:15. Had lots of fun.


23. A spring day- looks and feels like one. Mr. Beckett’s house caught on fire but was soon put out. Went down to gym to see high school play - faculty. Warmer a lot by dark.


24. A beautiful day- so clear & warm. I went over to Princeton on 3:15 bus to see Amos and Andy. Sure was good and a crowd. I came home about 10:30 with the folks. Got 7 eggs today.


25. A beautiful day. Went to SS & church. After dinner we started for a walk and went to Bluefield and back but didn’t walk all the way. Someone in training school today. Seen some snow still on ground in places. 6 eggs.


26. Cloudy. Looks like rain but didn’t. William Foster got life in prison for shooting Mr. Aliff of Oakvale. Went to practice at high school. 5 eggs.


27. Raining and continued most all day. Dr. Lilly gone to Bluefield to Jess Ward’s funeral and burial. Papa sick some from running crazy cow I think. I washed after supper also for Neta. 7 eggs.


28. A very nice day. Colder late in afternoon. No news of interest. Jailbirds working on road over at Speedway. 4 eggs.


29. A fine day. Just like spring. Sun so pretty. Mama spent the day with Aunt Hettie. Surveyors coming into town now. Will soon be done. 6 eggs.


30. A fine day. Wind so high all day. Fire out down Vermillion farm & PT Lilly’s place. Sure did burn for a while. Nearly 100 men working to put it out. 9 eggs.


31. Wind still high. Cloudy- some snow still on Flat Top. 7 eggs.


February


1. A beautiful day. Went to SS and to Lerona to preaching at 11:00 . Back to Estel’s for dinner and then to Hill Top to Aunt Sally Anderson’s funeral. Roads fine & dusty. Mama and Papa went to Watson’s for the day. 11 eggs.


2. Still fine weather. The groundhog could see himself if he got out. Finished up surveying Hinton Road in front of bank. LA Price died at 5 PM. Went to singing at 7:00. 8 eggs.


3. Spring weather. Sure is nice. Not a cloud to be seen. A big frost early. The Minnie Stull trial is on and courthouse packed. Put out a big washing after supper. 8 eggs.


4. Another fine day. Howe Johnson and Uncle Sid Boggess was in a wreck around Lerona. Truck turned over. Johnson cut about the face pretty bad. Mama sowed her lettuce today. Now say we haven’t started a garden. Went to bed early. 11 eggs today.


5. A fine day. Big frost. Ground perfectly dry. Mrs. Stull on the witness stand today. Was left alone at home after supper for a few hours and I heard every kind of noise.


6. A fine day. We are able to listen to argument of Stull case over radio. First trial to ever be broadcast over radio. Dr. Lilly went to Princeton about 2:30. Lots of ploughing is being done now. Ted Brookman died this morning.


7. Ted Brookman buried today at 2. Another very nice day. Rained some during day. Mrs. Stull got life in prison- first degree murder with mercy. Came over town after supper a while. Got home at 9:30. Had lots of fun.


8. Raining and did all day. Went to SS and ch at Methodist. After dinner I went out to see Aunt Hettie and to burial of Roy Coburn’s little boy- this makes 3. 13 eggs today.


9. Raining yet. Turning to snow about 10:30 and snowed some rest of day. Dr. Lilly gone to Princeton with Fink Via. Getting lots colder by night. Missed practice at High School. 19 eggs.


10. Cold this morning. Cloudy – spit a little snow during day and about 5 it sure did begin and a real snow squall came. Snowed hardest so far this winter. Sure was pretty. Went home in it. No other news that I know of. 13 eggs today.


11. Cold this morning. Snowing a little bit yet- 2 inches deep. Melted off- most all of it. Started new filling station between Sages Hotel and Massies. Will be real nice. 10 eggs.


12. A very nice day. Lots warmer- thawing too- a lot. I am sure glad that we have 2 ganders in our flock of geese and I sure am glad. Washed for Quincy tonight. 13 eggs today - .18 per doz.


13. Cloudy, looks like rain a lot. And did sure enough. Turning colder. No news


14. Snowed during night and still at it today. Dr. Lilly went to Anawalt & Thorpe this afternoon. Message came in that Mr. Meador is real sick. Dance down at gym but I did not go.


15. Thawing some. Snow melted fast. Went to SS & church. Papa went to Allen Pettrey’s to see a calf he had for sale and bought it. After dinner Papa, QD, and I went down to old Lilly farm for some White Ash and got them. Seen 6 pheasants. Sure was petered when we got back. Went to Quincy’s after supper.


16. A very nice day. Rained a little bit early. Dr. Lilly left for Bluefield. Will leave in the morning for Florida. Went to Practice and run up on some folks at big gate. Got QD’s spotlight to see who it was. Bill Bird & others.


17. Raining hard today. Went to PTA to sing had to leave before it happened. Cleared up some. Allen Pettrey brought the calf today. Very good looking. Quincys came down awhile.


18. Raining again and nearly all night. Clearing today but didn’t last long. Rained all afternoon. Went to play at college. Put on by Training School teachers. Dr. Lilly arrived in Florida at 4:15.


19. Rained a little today. Also went to Colonial Tea at Concord Inn yesterday. Women’s Chorus sang. Went to practice at 7 with men for church Sunday.


20. Snowed a little round. Snowing during night and a tiny bit this morning. Cloudy all day. Working on filling station laying brick. Sure is going up fast. Washed again after supper. Carl Shumate’s boy in Hinton was gassed and killed from films burning.


21. Cloudy all day again and real cool. Went to Elgood after supper to basketball games. Elgood Girls 50--Bluefield girls 9. Elgood Boys 29-Athens boys 11. Went with Es & Florence.


22. A fine day- cold tho. Went to SS and back to office and waited for mail. After dinner we went out for a walk for a while. Came back and I went to sleep for a while. After supper we went out up town and stopped at Dr. Holdren’s a while then on home getting colder.


23. Cloudy and cool. Rained a little bit not much. Letter from Dr. Lilly- states that Mr. Meador is very bad. Got my spotlight Saturday night. Went to practice at High School.


24. A fine day. Warming up some. No news much to keep. Cleaning up office good. Washed my windows. Ready for clean curtains. Went up to Quincy’s a while after supper. His radio not working good.


25. A real nice day. Mr. Meador very sick. No news sure enough. Quincy came down to hear Amos & Andy. Trial started last night. 14 eggs.


26. A beautiful day. Wind chilly tho. Everything clean in office and I get to rest now. Got a message at 8:30, Mr. Meador is dead. John Wyrick married again to Mrs. Moye Camp Creek.


27. A fine day. A big frost tho. Opening up Mr. Meador’s house. Ready for them to come. Watson Massie, Elvie Dobbins was married yesterday. A message came that Mrs. WM Hall was dead. QD came out home a while of fun--left at 11.


28. A very nice morning. I helped down at the Meador house all morning. Johnny Clemens and Bessie Pennington were married today. A message came Arch McCoy was found dead in his office in PA. Tired and ready for bed early. Raining began about 2:30 continued on all day & night. Put out tomato plants Aunt Rose brought me.


March


1. Raining today also. Folks got in at 7:20 to Bluefield on over about 9. Went to SS & church. Mr. JM Chriswill of Mullens. Came over to Mr. Meador’s a while after supper & on to church at 7:30. Snowed some late in afternoon. Eggs--13.


2. Clearing up some, cold tho. A very nice day. Went to burial and funeral of Mr. Meador. JJ Cook was in charge of services. Sure was a big crowd present. Found the first goose nest- 1 egg in it. Went to practice at High School. John Wirtz came over for milk--makes 2 gal. 13 eggs.


3. A fine day sure. Lots of people went from here to Arch McCoy’s funeral & burial. Was out after supper. Up to Estel’s & Florence’s. Several there. Elgood beat college girls 31-21 Basketball. 11 eggs.


4. Snowing early this morning. Blew snow all day but melted. This is March tho. Put out my seeds. 6 only 25 for 5.00. Hope they come up- all 6. Began snowing about 5 o’clock and it sure did snow for a while. I washed after supper. 2 Goose eggs.


5. A fine day. Wind cold tho. Snow all gone. Everybody is ready for the tournament but me. No news of keeping kind. Went home and to bed soon as Andy & Amos was done. 4 Goose eggs.


6. Cloudy early and went to snowing up in day – a little in afternoon. The biggest snowflakes I ever saw fell and as many for the time being. Was the prettiest time I ever witnessed in my life. Five Goose eggs.


7. Cloudy today. Rained in afternoon and night. Several in town in evening. Tournament in towns. No hard times that I can tell.12 eggs. 6 Goose eggs.


8. Rained a lot during night. Snowing and did all day up till bedtime. Went to SS & church and home. Up to see Quinzetta awhile in evening. A downpour of snow all day. 13 hen eggs. 2 Goose eggs.


9. Snowing and did all night. And blew and snowed all day- never stopped at all. Dr. Lilly & Via went to Spanishburg this morning. A bunch to meet county court in regard to street. Some rough evening. 10 hen eggs. 2 goose eggs.


10. Continuing snowing and wind high and biggest drifts I ever saw I believe. All over county so say radio. Cleared in afternoon and sun shone bright. Everybody said the storm was over. 10 hen eggs. I have 12 goose eggs.


11. Cloudy at 5:30. Snowing at 6:30 and continued on up till this writing at 1 PM. And on and off all day & night. No news to jot down. 7 eggs. 1 goose egg.


12. Snowing- yet a little melting and thawing tho. Wind high and cold. No news much to keep. Biggest snow drifts in our yard ever I believe. 8 hen eggs.


13. Moderately fast today. Snow all gone but drifts. Mr. Russell Bodell died last night. Uncle Lacy Lewis’s sister died yesterday, Mrs. Goodlow. Got a cold in my head. No goose eggs. 7 hen eggs.


14. Cloudy some today. Raining at 1:30. And on all of afternoon and night. Aunt Mattie came up to spend a few days with us. Put out 2 cyprus trees. Hope they live. Someone has been in Jim Pennington’s store again and took lots I think this time.


15. Raining some today. Went to SS - coll $6.22. Went to Rock WVa to burial of Mary Goodlow, Uncle Lacy Lewis’s sister. Sure was something. Tired when I got home. Aunt Flora Steele is in town for a day or so. Turning colder. Snowing a little at dark. Quincys took supper with us. Got 2 goose eggs.


16. Snowing all day a little. Aunt Mattie spent most of day with Aunt Hettie. Rained and snowing all day- wind high, melting fast tho. No news much. Author McKinney is dead in Bluefield.


17. Cold and snowing some yet today. Aunt Mattie, Mama and I went through the RG Meador home. Sure is nice. All of our state & county officers were in town and out in and around town looking for stolen goods. Found nothing tho.


18. A very nice day. Still snow where it drifted. Running concrete for floor at filling station today. Pete & Mr. Meador came for Aunt Mattie tonight. A sale between Aunt Hettie and Aunt Mattie. Went up to Quincys a while.


19. Snowing some today and raining also. Colder a lot. Another day running concrete floor to station.


20. Snowed a little during night. Colder this morning- a lot- it froze some. Cleared up but sure was warm- wind very cool. Snow where it drifted yet. Snowed some in afternoon.


21. First day of spring. Very nice day. Wind very cold tho. Allen Vest’s oldest child fell in a tub of boiling water and was burned all but the head. Died in hospital 2 o’clock Sunday morning. Quinzetta 8 years today.


22. Snowed all night and a large snow too- wet and melting. All night snowed all day too. Went to Sunday School and out to see Aunt Hettie a while after lunch. Bill stopped by to trade me out of my Ford. 7 hen eggs. 4 goose eggs.


23. Still melting and all night again. Raining a tiny bit this morning. Ordering my license today. Mrs. Sage brought big Cornel over to stay with Rachel. Hope we do good with them. Heard Uncle Hade caught with 49 pints and only fined 240.00 and turned loose. Went to singing at High S. 1 goose egg.


24. Raining, sleeting and so on this morning. Snow all gone except on north hills. Heard Jim Pennington and Mrs. Lexie Vaught was married this afternoon.


25. Snowed a little bit. Mr. Short has traded his store for a farm in Spanishburg. Bill brought down a Chevy for me to see but came after dark- couldn’t see much. 2 goose eggs.


26. A very pretty day early but got cloudy later in day. Men laying brick on filling station. No news much. March sure has been rough. Had my spring coat cleaned.


27. Raining today- most all day and cold too. Still snow drifts on Flat Top. Bill Bird in hospital in Brunswick, NJ so a message came in. Raining right after dark. Quincys came down awhile. 2 goose eggs & 12 hen eggs.


28. Rained and blew all night and still misting most of day. Got my 1931 auto license 138420. Went to raining about 2:15 and didn’t stop until up in the night some time. Dr. Lilly went to Princeton to fix up Meador papers. 


29. Cool and cloudy. Went to SS and waited for mail. After lunch I went up and got my Ford out and came over town for gas and oil and back home. Runs like a Hudson. John Bird left for New Jersey where Bill is in hospital. Snowed a little bit today.


30. Cold this morning believe me. Drs. both gone to Princeton to finish up Dr. Lilly’s trip Saturday. A message from John Bird states condition of Bill is better than he expected- has a fractured skull tho. Went to practice at High School.


31. Cloudy & cool. Snowbirds hollering. Snowing as I went to office and continued a little all day. Ground white by night on mountains. Sleeting, raining & snowing about 7:30. Went to bed early tonight. Knute Rockney killed in an airplane with 7 more. 14 eggs. 2 goose eggs.


April


1. A big snow and wet & still snowing. Good-bye March. If you had to leave all of this snow, we are all glad you are gone. Snowing all day. Washed tonight.


2. Melting fast. Raining and sleeting yet today. Went to church at 7:15. The Women’s Chorus sang a special. Sure was good. Only 35 present tho. Warmer some.


3. Froze and slick, believe me. Cloudy most all day. Went to High School to PTA meeting of the District and a square dance. Had lots of fun. Raining, lightening & thundering, storming. And the frogs were yelling first time.


4. Raining this morning. Now say the ground isn’t wet. The Barber Shop was robbed last night. $80.00 & church money & Bass Co.  State Police here for fingerprints. Carry Goode’s car is still gone on hunt for it. Price went over to Princeton. 2 were seen with car.


5. Cloudy and Easter to boot. Cheatwood & White Barber Shop & bank broken in too. Gun gone from bank. Got all the law here today- expert on fingerprints this time. Also bloodhounds. 2 tracked a straight line I expect. Lots of excitement. Raining to beat the band.


6. 4 inches of snow & pouring at 5:30 and has not slacked up a bit at this writing- 12 noon. Another wet and thawing- not a bit cold. Charlie Vaught & Pearl Cole is married today. Forgot practice. Chilly Pettrey died today. Snowing at bedtime. 


7. Snowed another hard and big snow on top of this one! And began to clear and melt and by night it was nearly all gone. Mr. RH Whittaker came and looked the house over and gave me a check for June when he will move in.


8. First of spring that I have seen. A fine day. Snow all gone but on high mountains. Caught Ray Martin in Hinton today. Mrs. Sage sent for Big Cornel. Brought my car to Jones’ to put some water in battery & grease in rear end. Dr. Lilly gone most of the day to Princeton. Got himself 25 chicks.


9. A real day. This will make a fellow smile. Birds hollering everywhere.


10. Another fine day. Federal man picked Uncle Hade up down on street.


11. A very nice day. Cold tho some. Went up to Uncle Hade’s a while. First time I have had my Ford out. Uncle Hade is in jail. Federal man caught him. Dr. Lilly in Princeton all afternoon.


12. A fine day. Went to Sunday School and after dinner we went down to farm a while and took grass seed. Had a big time. Got some flowers where we lived that I put out when a little tot. Ray Martin has told something- I know not what. Went for a ride after supper awhile.


13. A fine day. So much like spring. Cleaned up garden and ready for plowing. Mowed part of back yard today. Put out sweet peas also. Working hard getting things cleaned up for spring.


14. Another dandy day. Andrew plowing oats field. Mowed rest of yard today.


15. A fine day. Got garden plowed and oats sowed and done today. Put out onions and peas tonight. One of Bob Powell’s boys got killed. Fell off tower of AEP where he was working.


16. Another day fine. Put out beets, carrots today. No news that I know of.  


17. Beautiful weather. Word came in this morning that John Powell, one of Bob Powell’s boys, fell off of a 60 foot tower to death yesterday. Mrs. Geo Thompson sent me 3 peonies today. Set out lilac bush also. Andy must be dead- has not been home for a month or more.


18. A fine day. No rain yet. Lots of plowing being done. Ras & Buron came in for my field glasses. I did not let them have them. Thought we were going to have company but they did not come. Came over town after supper a while.


19. A whopper of a day. Went to SS and home. Bill & Betty & Aunt Rose came up to spend a while with us after dinner. We went over to Uncle Hade’s a while and up to see Arthur Shumate in Princeton Hospital.

Had a flat tire today - first in a year. Gus Wiley died today. Went to bed early.


20. A fine day. So nice and warm.  Dr. Lilly gone to Princeton all morning. Spring term begins today. Several new students in town. Seen Grover P. awhile today. Went to practice at High School. Hugh Wiley died in Huntington today.


21. Another fine day. Looked like rain some. Lyn Dove was paroled today. Came home and all went to Princeton tonight show but me. I finally got to PTA meeting at High School- Father’s Night. Folks came in at 11:45, Oh me. I was scared ___ ___ if it hadn’t been for 1. Wind high. Was raining before I got to bed sure.


22. Raining and wind blowing. About 9:30, it began snowing and it sure did on to noon. Temperature fell 22 degrees. Snow melting some. Peach trees in full bloom- Pears and plums- O look out fruit. Went to bed early.


23. Ice and lots of it. Wind high all night. Ground was froze just a little. Dr. Lilly & Dr. Vermillion gone to Princeton in LB Scott case. Harry Waddell and Bernice White married or license was published. Warming up a little. Mama washed today by herself.


24. Cloudy all day. Elgood Graded School is out today with a big Basket Dinner and there was plenty so they say. Fruit not hurt yet. Got bloomers & stockings out of P.O. Went to bed early but did no good. Got concrete paint for pool. Raining as we went home.


25. Cloudy yet today raining a little up in day some. Clean up today of town hauling out rubbish. I painted table here in office and sick was no name for me. Thought I would die for a while. Poison I guess. Slipped off to Princeton after supper with JE got back about 9. Clear as a bell but not cold.


26. Raining this morning and on until in afternoon. Wind high. Cecil came down a while after supper. Sure is a good looking boy. Was out to Fred’s after supper also.


27. Ice this morning and cloudy and wind yet blowing hard. Went to singing. Stopped at Fred’s a while to see Cecil perform. Clear as a bell as I went home. Will freeze sure tonight. Paid off my note at bank.


28. Warmer some this morning. Got cabbage plants & onions also. Tricky came up to sell me his sheep but I am broke. Was out at Fred’s awhile to hear boys sing & play Hawaiian Guitar- Cecil & JE.  


29. Warmer today. Wind high tho. Dr. Vermillion gone to Johnson’s funeral & burial. Mrs. Wetzel Williams hit a car in front of bank. Went over to Aunt Lura’s a while after supper.


30. A fine day so nice & warm. Planted potatoes this morning. Becketts bought another new Chevrolet. Billy Belcher & Miss Bragg & Genevie came out home a while.


May


1. Raining this day all day. Dr. Vermillion lost all of his fish. Painted pool and put them in. Mowed part of my yard. Lake Kanode has bought a new Chevrolet. Got my release Deed of Trust. House is all mine now.


2. Raining some this morning. We are all getting ready to go to the big opening of the new filling station. Cheatwood, White & Sage Co.  The biggest excitement was a car caught on fire. Sure was a large crowd there. Was very nice. Got in about 11 o’clock. Sure was tired. Cleared up and got real warm.


3. A fine day. Went to SS and got mail and home. Painted my pool with aluminum paint. Papa and I went out and got a dogwood tree and set it out. May die, I hope not. Went up to Uncle Hade’s but he was not there. Had left on Saturday. Came home about 6:30. Getting colder a lot. Went to bed early.


4. No frost this morning. Planted my gladiolas this morn. Patton White’s wife is very ill with pneumonia. Dr. Fred went with Dr. Uriah and she died at 6:20. Leaves 12 children alive 2 dead. Missed practice. Went out to Willie’s to tell her of Ollie.


5. A fine morning. Put one coat of sky blue paint on pool. Went to Patton’s after supper, all of us & Quincys also. Got home about 9:30. 36 minutes coming home in my Ford.


6. Put on 2 coats of paint. A fine day. Went to Elgood to funeral & burial of Ollie. Sure was a large crowd present. Mrs. Noah Akers is seriously ill. I sent over to farm 1 bu. potatoes to plant. Came over town to church meeting. Rained as we came home from Elgood.


7. Clear early but got cloudy and raining, thundering, lighning at noon. Sure will be fine to get the ground wet again now. Rained hardest into years. Washed oats a sight.


8. Clear today. Cool some tho. Mrs. Noah Akers died about 1:30 or 2 today. Alice McManaway died in Huntington today. Will be brought here for burial. Went out for a ride and stopped at Uncle Hade’s awhile- not in my car.


9. Cloudy, rained a little maybe more the way it looks. John Bird came in last night. Bill is better a lot. Came over town after supper up to cemetery a while. Went home and to bed early. At 10 it was raining as hard as it could. Thundering, lightning.


10. A fine morning. Wind high. Went to Sunday School and home and ate dinner and on out Elgood to funeral & burial of Mrs. Akers. Sure was a large crowd there. Went to bed at 6:45 and believe me I felt good in bed. Alice McManaway was buried today in Ball cemetery.


11. Raining today. Changed water in my pool and ready now to put fish & flowers in. Uncle Gus Steele came for Willie & rest of kids. Later we got a message for all of the sisters & Bro to come at once if they wanted to see her alive. 5 cars left at 5:15 and got there at 10:30. Lost 2 times. Found her very sick. Dr. doing nothing for her. Waiting for her to die I guess. 


12. Raining today and hard. We left Uncle Gussie’s at 10:30 and it sure was raining. Had 27 miles of dirt road to drive over. Got home at 4:30. And believe me we were glad to get home. Hailed some and real cool. Went to bed early. No sleep for 36 hours and I sure feel bad.


13. Rained today also working hard. Made our first set of $75.00 plates for Mrs. CC McPherson. Do look good. Board hired teachers last night. Lots of disturbance about schools. Sam’s bunch at Elgood. Aunt Flora still alive.


14. Rained and hailed nearly all day. Maybe now the weather will get better. Replanted lilies and put in pool. My dahlias are up. Went to bed early again.


15. Clear and warmer. Maud Easton died last night in Princeton. Got a message that Aunt Flora Steele died at 5:15 this afternoon. Was out to see Fred Ball’s a while.


16. A fine day. Sun hot. Busy getting things ready for folks to come in from Dungannon Va…got here at 3 PM. Five bands came to town this afternoon. Maude Eaton was buried at Elgood. Uncle Gus spent the night with us. Went to bed at 12:30. Went to Princeton after supper.


17. Went to raining about 7:30 and it sure did pour until about 10:30. Left Fred’s at 12 noon for Elgood to bury Aunt Flora. Roads fine after we left Will Williams. Uncle Gus did not go. 18 ate dinner at our house. Was worn out after supper. Went out to Fred’s awhile before bedtime.


18. Rained and hailed a lot this morning. Dr. Lilly gone to Huntington for State meeting. Got my Bargain no 1 from radio offer and put some out. Worked in garden some after supper.


19. A fine day. Sprinkled rain a little bit. Charlie Gore shot by son is belief. Mr. & Mrs. Whittaker came up to clean up house some. Ed Wirtz has gone over walls good. Mowed yard again. Came over town after supper.


20. Very nice early but went to raining and did most all day. Sure did pour in afternoon and night. Renters moved in today. Went to college to High School Class Night. Dr. Lilly came last night. Found on bank lot 1 bunch keys- 3.


21. Raining yet today. Washed our oats bad yesterday…who said it couldn’t rain more. Ground sure ought to be wet now. After supper we went up to cemetery to mow Uncle Dee’s plot and back to Tip’s cemetery and home and to bed tired. Pool looks fine. Cooler tonight.


22. Fair and cool today. Went to raining about 3 and sure did come down, Hail also. Went down to High School Graduation. A large crowd present. Bernice W. went with me. Cool and cloudy at bedtime.


23. Rained and rained. Can’t believe colder but cloudy. No news much that I know of. Started to Princeton…too cold. Turned around and came back home. Covered up my tomatoes and dahlias.


24. A very nice frost. Did not hurt anything. Went to Sunday School and church to hear Dr. Marsh. After dinner we went up to Aunt Alice’s a while. Got home at 6:15. Papa said it would rain by morning--lots warmer.


25. Raining and hailed again today- all morning. Dad and I went to Princeton for chop. Car cut up some. Beulah Goodlow license in paper yesterday- married a man from California. Dr. Vermillion is putting in new floors at his home.


26. Clear but rained during night again. My goose is setting 8 eggs. Rachel, my canary bird has been on nest all day. May lay. Hope so and get a singer. Mrs. PW Massie has her. Went to Princeton for a drive –invited.


27. Has gone 24 hours without raining. First time in 3 weeks I believe.


28. Hat today. No rain. Went out after supper and fixed cemetery and put out some shrubs at home.


29. Hotter today. No rain. School is out today Training School. Quincy’s kids all promoted on up.

1. Rained during the night. Ground good and wet again. Dr. Lilly sick, not at office. No news. School is nearly out. Put cabbage plants. Uncle Joe and Aunt Mattie were up for a little while after supper.


2. A fine day. Rachel has 4 eggs. Dr. Lilly still sick. My white ash trees are blooming. Dr. Vermillion has bought another new Chevrolet today. Stepping out I believe.


3. Another good growing day. Warm tho. Dr. Lilly out but no good. Was up to see him after supper. Stopped at Whittaker’s a few minutes. Went over to Jim Hazelwood’s for plants. Went in hi gear also.


4. A fine day- hot. Our furniture came for parsonage also Preacher CT Hensley & wife drove over to Princeton a while after supper. No news only town is bum. Everybody gone.


5. Another fine day- a little shower. Dr. Lilly in bed all day very sick. Hot. Put out dahlias got from Mrs. Sage yesterday.


6. A dandy day- showered again today. Dr. Lilly out but can’t work yet. Went over to Princeton after supper a while.


7. A fine morning. Went to Sunday School and to hear new preacher, Mr. Hensley. Rained and wind high all afternoon. Went to church at 8:30. Uncle Jim Fletcher died today. Also Mrs. Hartman and Okie Meadows.


8. Rained a little shower. No news only a stream of students all day coming to town. Came over town after supper a while. Margaret Meador is in school. Staying at Concord Inn.


9. A fine day. 750 students enrolled and more coming in all the time. Mrs. Hartman funeral today also Mr. Fletcher’s at Elgood.


10. Sun hot today. Lily in pool bloomed today.


11. Hot today. No news. Went over to Princeton after supper awhile. Got home in time for Amos & Andy. Cloudy and lightning.

15. Poured down rain and hailed some- a real wash out. Washed out party at Mercer Healing Springs. Willie & Betty came down a while after supper. My pool is pretty.


16. A fine day. Ed Wirtz came to paint inside today. Went up to clean and mowed plot off and on for a ride up the road. Had lots of fun. Sam Alvis in jail after Monk Williams & Ray. Ed brought cat over to show us its wings.


17. A little bit chilly this morning. Warmed up during the day. Went to a call meeting of Sunday School teachers & officers. On for a ride and home.


18. A fine day- hot. John Wirtz painting windows of bank. Dr. Lilly went to Hinton on business. No news much.


19. Hot today. 82 in office. I heard the law told Uncle Hade to be a good boy or they would stick him next time - serve the limit. Giles White boy has a broken arm. Doc Hicks was put in jail tonight.


20. A fine day. Showered a little bit. Not much. Went over to Princeton after supper. A very pleasant evening. Rachel’s eggs failed to hatch.


21. A fine day. Went to SS & church. After dinner we drove up and spent the afternoon with Uncle Hade. No one there but him. Seen Uncle Ben Holdren for my first time up at Uncle Doc’s. Missed church.


22. Rained again-today makes 5 or 6 Mondays. Ed is making things look fine over at home. 804 in school. Betty went to Dungannon for 2 weeks yesterday.


23. Hot as thunder all day. My goose quit her nest.


24. Still hot. Lillian and Lura came out and spent the day. Everything in a mess believe me.


25. Hot also again. Varnished rugs & floor today. Came over town after supper to help fix up a broken arm & make x-ray. I slept on the floor- o my back.


26. 86 today. Dr. Lilly gone to Bluefield this morning. Dr. Sam brought me 1 bucket of Governor Wood Cherries. Sure was fine. Slept on floor again.


27. No news only hot. Waxed floor and moved in everything. Looks so nice. Drove over to Princeton after supper a while. Hot all night.


28. Hot and clear. Went to SS & church. All went to Frank Gore’s but me & sister. We stayed at home. Mabel Lineberry wrecked up at Shumate’s. Shrewsbury shot a Boyce boy over a wreck and several more happened during day. Went to church at 5:00. Rachel was sure sick tonight.


29. Hot again- still no rain. Mama went to see Aunt Nan Martin. We played golf after supper. Sure had some fun. Dr. Sam bought a new Chevrolet.


30. Hot, Hot, Hot. Bill Powell died last night. Showered a little bit. Not any over home. Sam & Hobart helped us play golf a while this evening.


July


1. Another hot day. I believe. Went to 92. Boy it was hot. Most miserable night I ever spent.


2. Hot 93. Dr. Lilly gone to Mullens. Got back at 2:30. Mrs. Barker took suddenly ill at dinner table- took her to hospital. Sprinkled rain a tiny bit. Turned a little bit cooler also.


3. A fine day. Lots of rain. Lightning hit tree at garden gate. Also lots of wind.


4. A very nice day. Dr. Lillys are away on a swimming party today. I spent most of the afternoon in bed. Came over town about 4:30 for a while. Up late making picture for Frank Gore’s girl and so on.


5. A fine day. Pretty hot tho. Took Tootsie to hospital and I watched them operate on her leg. In afternoon we went down to see Aunt Nan Martin. First time in 25 years I have seen her. Then we drove over to Princeton and back and to church. It’s a full day and tired & coughing.

7. A fine day. Board meeting and new members came in. Daddy hired again at Training School. CW Grim at High School instead of Roof Bird. Some mad about the change.

9. A fine day. Sam Alvis was married today to Bee Blankenship. Family seems to be happy about it. A hard rain. Mama down at John Martin’s. We had to go get her and it is still raining- a steady rain. Bowed our oats some.


10. A very nice day. Rained a little bit tho at noon again. Dr. Lilly gone all day with Mr. Ruff. I have a big dahlia in bloom today. Picked our first mess of green beans.

14. Fine day. Bought 2 pigs from Alfred and brought them home after supper. Mrs. Laura Cain died in Princeton at 9:30.

20. Went early for Mama to Aunt Nan’s. Andrew cutting oats today. Pete & Uncle Joe came also. Margaret came to spend the night. Aunt Nan Martin died at 6:30. A hard storm and rain about 10. Jones lined my brakes on my Ford.


21. Rained a lot today. Went to burial in rain and came back in it. Sick all night. Company again tonight. Came over town after supper. 


22. Pleasant day. Good breeze-first day in a long time. Drs. all gone today to Virginia. Went over to Aunt Lura’s after supper. A real hard storm came and rain. Lightning hit Lee Oxley’s wheat stacks. Lost 2. So much wind.


23. Very nice day. Dr’s all gone to Levi Scott’s trial today. Can’t get our oats cut. We all had supper up at Quincy’s. Another storm about dark- lot of wind.


24. Raining most of the night and yet this morning. Margaret in a wreck as she came to school. In to see Dr. Vermillion. Drs all gone again today to trial. Folks came for Aunt Mattie and she went home tonight. Jones had a wreck on Shumate hill and he & Olen Jennings is in hospital.


25. A fine day. Hot- tho. On July 19, Dr. Smith broke Tootsie’s leg dressing it. Frank sure is hot. Went over to Princeton after supper and up to Uncle Hade’s a while.


26. Hot. Sure. Went to SS & church after dinner. We drove over to Princeton to see the sick. Got home about 6. Too sick to go to church. I have a real bad cough. Lacy Alvis turned Barbary’s truck over in the road over near Speedway.


27. A fine day. Dr. Vermillion took Oren Oxley to hospital early this morning. Very sick too. Aunt Nannie Martin- Effie’s mother- died at 3:45 today.


28. Another hot day. Message came is that Kelly Massie had been hit by a truck and in a Fairmont hospital. Also a message that Oren Oxley died at hospital. Came over town after supper and over to Effie’s a while. Sprinkled rain a little.


29. Hot- Oh, How Hot. Went to funeral of Mrs. Martin. Dr.’s Lilly & Vermillion went on to Oren’s funeral & burial over at Richard’s. Ten years ago today, I was operated on for appendicitis. Mr. Massie died at 4:20 today.


30. A fine day. Jessie’s birthday. Also we have a new calf. Was out after supper on a watermelon feast. Had lots of fun.

1. Hot- so early today. Funeral of Mr. Massie in Concord auditorium so as to accommodate the crowd and believe me it rained and kept us there until 5 o’clock. Drowned several cars. Biggest storm this year. Came over town after supper awhile.


2. Hot this morning. Went to SS & church. Dr. Lilly is Superintendent of Sunday School as Mr. Bryson is leaving. Raining after noon solid and on into the night.


3. A very nice day- no rain today. Aunt Emma Thompson died today. Margaret spent the night with us. Came over town after supper and for a ride.


4. Another fine day. Rained some today. Went up to Quincy’s awhile and lots of rain late tonight.


5. Fine, hot tho. Fred sent my paint up today. Mrs. Appling died today. Rained late in afternoon also.


6. Still hot. Not much news. Went to Commencement down at college.

10. Cloudy. Rained some in Afternoon. Ed Wirtz started painting my house. Faye Hall and Dr. Pollock were married at Fred Cooper’s today.


11. Cold and cloudy all day. Geo Bryson & Dot Kennedy married today in Bluefield. Mother came home today. Dr. Van gone on vacation.


12. Still cold. Levi Scott got 3 years in the pen over Hall heirs. Too bad. Cold and rained some in afternoon- a lot.


13. Cold this morning. Rockcastle Association started today in town. Several in for this. Ladies served dinner for them at church. Sick all day- stomach ache. Went to bed early.


14. Warming up some. Last day of Association. Went out for morning program and dinner. No news of interest that I know of.


15. A fine day. Chilly and cloudy. Dr. Lilly gone to Lilly Reunion. Went over to Princeton after supper and up to Aunt Alice’s.


16. Hot & clear. Went to SS a few minutes and then left for Flat Top to Lilly Reunion. Came back in 1:20 m. Seen Geo.  Sure was a large crowd there. Seen Carl Blankenship- first time in 15 years. Went to bed early. Went up to Quincy’s and out to Fred’s.


17. A fine day and no news, only gossiping about Lilly Reunion.


18. Another very nice day. No news tho. We operated on Tom Hazelwood’s girl and fixed up her jaw. Worse we have ever seen. Jaw bone and teeth all came out together. Didn’t sleep any hardly all night- nervous.


19. A very nice day early. Rained late in afternoon. Wanted to go to John Wirtz’s but didn’t.


20. Raining here a lot. Dr. Lilly went to Princeton in after on business. I went to birthday party of Grandma Sages at Concord Inn. 85 years old. Goodwill party from Princeton went thru Monroe. We peeled apples after supper for apple butter. Quincys came down.


21. Cooler today. Roofing paint came in today. Went to raining early in afternoon and continued all evening & night. Went to bed early. Sick most of night at the stomach. Oh I was sick.


22. Raining all night and on until this writing at 2:30 and on until late in night. Came over town after supper a while and to bed early. Started dance practice for fair.


23. Clear and cool. Went to SS & church. After dinner we drove to Princeton to see Tootsie at Aunt Alice’s. Got home about 6. Gus Martin died last night. Went out to see Willie - fell yesterday and sprained her ankle.


24. Cool yet today. Ed Wirtz putting on roofing paint on Burch house, Gus Martin buried today. Went over to Princeton for chop and cracked corn at Snider’s. No news much. Some- won’t do to talk.


25. Still cool. Putting roofing paint on my house. Got a ten year guarantee. Rained a little after supper- not much tho. Peeled apples for butter tonight. Teddy Foster came to town tonight. All glad to see him.


26. Warmer today. Cider mill came in today. Good for that. Will make cider now. Ed Wirtz will finish up roof today on my house.

28. Raining this morning again. Charles McNutt fell off of Cutright’s house and broke his leg above the knee. Working hard putting up fruits and things.

30. A fine day. Looks like fall. Went to SS and home and down to Aunt Rosie Lewis’s for rest of day. Had a big time and lots to eat. Got home tired. Sent Mary Allen over to Geo Thompson for a day or so.

1. A dandy day. Studebaker bus burned up on Shumate Hill. Dr. Carl Smith died in NC--pneumonia.


2. Rained today. Dr. Vermillion gone to Lewisburg.


3. Rained all day hard and on until the next day.


4. Rained today. Dr. Lilly gone part of the day. Went to Princeton to circus. Had lots of fun. Came home about 15 to 12. Backache.


5. A fine day. My birthday and nobody knew it. Worked Broadway some. Aunt Mattie came up and Uncle Joe peeled peaches that they brought us. Came over town after supper awhile.


6. A fine day. Went to SS & church and home and stayed rest of day. Uncle Joe came about 6 o’clock. Pete went on to Princeton. Left for Hinton at 8:15. I missed church.


7. A fine day. No news much that I know of. Went to church meeting at 7:30 and then home after supper.


8. Still fine weather. No rain for a while. Worked hard. Flower show today at Sage’s Filling Station. I got first prize on dahlia and 2nd on gladiolas. A good show too, believe me. Came over town after supper awhile.


9. A fine day, hot too. Dr. Lilly gone to Charleston for the day. Dr. Vermillion went to Princeton. I was alone most of the day. Ed Via gone to Charleston to get big bus. Came over town after supper a while.

20. Hot today. Went to SS & church. After dinner we went up Uncle Hade’s awhile. He & Frank Gore had moved to a new house. Tootsie was up at hospital for a new cast to be put on her leg. Came home and went to BYPU and church at 7:30. D___ escorted me home- A grand rush again. Tried out new cider mill and it is fine.


21. Hot and no rain. 547 new students in school. Luther Hazelwood was shot last night by an unknown gentleman. Seriously shot, Dr. V. says. Went to a molasses making and pain came off at 2 in the morn. O Me.


22. 86 in the shade and no rain. Everything is so dry and dusty. No news much that I know of- only on myself and I won’t tell that. Quincys was down awhile. Lightning in north. Rain in 24 hours. Verla Shrewsbury took carbolic acid and died immediately. Poor kid. Hard luck.


23. Hot today also. Rained and showered at noon and so hot and rained in afternoon also. Daddy broke his watch and had it repaired at Walker’s today. Came over town after supper awhile.


24. Very nice. Cool after rain yesterday. Aunt Hettie Faulkner had us scared this morning for a while. Dr. Lilly gone to Hinton. Aunt Mattie stopped awhile on her way home from Bluefield. Uncle Joe and Pete came after her late 8:00. Bill ate supper with us. Went out to Tip’s awhile after supper. Cow is sick. Verla buried today in Matoaka.


25. Cool all night- nearly frost. Warmed up during day some. Elgood & Athens Square Dancers met at Fairgrounds for a real good time. Served sandwiches and cold drinks. Got home at 1 o’clock. Wind high. Uncle Tip split her (cow) tail - Friday Sept 25-31.


26. A real storm and a downpour of rain early and a lot of rain on up until 7:30. Turning colder a lot. Went over to Princeton at 5 to get me a hat. Got home at 6:15. Came over town after supper awhile. Aunt Hettie worse again.


27. Cool & raining this morn. Went to SS & church at Methodist. In afternoon we went to Uncle Hade’s awhile. Uncle Joe, Margaret, and Roy came up awhile in afternoon and stayed for supper. We all went for a ride after they left. Got home 9:30. Raining a little bit.


28. Chilly – Raining this morning. Arthur Jones was in a wreck up at Shakletown in which he is paralyzed, so report late this afternoon. Car torn all to pieces. Fred & Tom Daughtery in jail over a wreck at same place of Jones. Several cars torn up over Sunday. Clearing up and colder. A fire was put in office as same as everywhere else. Cut some flowers so frost would not get them.

30. A very nice day- no frost. Dr. Vermillion said there was some at his house. Arthur Jones died in Memorial Hospital at 5 this afternoon with a broken neck and paralyzed from chest down. Picked up apples for cider after supper. Put up 2 gallons wine. 3 pts. G and 3 sugar.


October


1. Warmer today. Company came. Aunt Emma, Dee, Ethel, Eva, Venena- all came …first time in many a year- 3 kids. Dr. Lilly gone to Princeton this afternoon. Went home and mowed yard and picked up apples to make cider.


2. Warmer today a lot. Dr. Lilly & Ed Via went to Hinton to Jones funeral & burial. Run out of gas as I came over town this morn. No news to jot down as I know of. Teaching my calf to eat. Got a box of candy on evening mail. Daddy & I made about 10 gallons cider after supper.


3. Cooler some…no frost tho. Dropped my watch and broke it today. Went to Lacy Lewis to a birthday party. Left town at 15 to 8, got back at 12:30. Dr. Lilly went to Princeton after dinner to have Richard’s eyes looked after. Had a flat tire.


4. Clear and nice. Went to SS & church. After noon, in came Roy Aubrey & Lula. Uncle Joe and we went out to see Aunt Hettie awhile and came back home. And 25 people were there making themselves at home. We played and had lots of fun. After supper we went to church and baptizing at 7:30. Company came home with us.


5. Rained a little today. Dr. Vermillion gone to Fairmont & Morgantown also Dr. Sam & Ed Via. Daddy got his first check. Came over town after supper to SS meeting. Got home about 9:30. Went for a ride with D & M.


6. Raining a little off & on today. Dr. Lilly gone to Princeton for afternoon. Charlie Boggess’ little girl was buried today. At Elgood.


7. No news much. Sprinkled rain a little late in the evening. Ed Wirtz made some cider. We dug our sweet potatoes. Had 6 or 7 bushel. Dr. Vermillion came in from Fairmont today.


8. Cloudy some this morning. Raining a tiny bit. Clearing by later in day. Willis White died last night in Huntington. We made 16 gal cider after supper.


9. Raining some today early. Cool too. Clearing up late in the afternoon. Willis White as buried at Spanishburg this afternoon. Dr. Lilly went. Company after supper came. Dr. Lilly came and made some cider. May frost.


10. A dandy day. St. Louis won the World Series. 4 out of 7 over Philadelphia. No frost yet. Went over to Princeton after supper a while. Got all a pair of shoes.


11. O such a day. Went to SS & church. Company came while eating dinner. Ches, Alfred, & BJ and as they left folks from Hinton came. Up to Whittaker’s a while after all left. Went to BYPU and church, not many there. D___came.


12. Sprinkled rain a little bit. John Price gave me a summons. Cleo Martin is dead reported today. Jim Easley home was sold today. Made 14 gallons of cider after supper.


13. Cloudy all day nearly. Dug my gladiola bulbs & tube roses this morning. Cleo Martin buried today in Oxley Hollow. Rained a little today. Peeled pears after supper awhile.


14. Raining early this morning and warmer a lot. A real rain late in afternoon & night. Put up stove in sitting room and went to bed early and slept fine.


15. Cool and warmer a lot. Dr. Lilly, Ed Via, Fred Cooper, Dr. Marsh & Charlie Archer went to Charleston for the day. Reported Gary & Anawalt banks closed yesterday. Went home and picked up apples and then went to choir practice and church.


16. Sprinkled rain a little. No news much. Turning colder fast. Picked flowers- a wagon load tonight also tomatoes & made 16 gal cider.


17. Cool but no frost as we thought we would have. Bought 1 bu “beans” today. Tom Daugherty hit Ken Shannon’s boy up at Scott’s store. Some excitement for a little while. Came over town after supper a while. Cold sure to frost. Toothache today.


18. Everything white with frost & ice- lots of it. Flowers are no more now. Message that we would have company so I went to SS & home. Bill, Lizzie, Aunt Rosa & Rose Goodloe came and after dinner we drove over to Princeton. Such a nice day. Uncle Hade, Aunt Alice, Frank & Bennie Gore, Jean & Florence & Harold Pennington came for a while. Went to BYPU & church. Will frost again sure.


19. Another big frost and ice… lasted nearly all day. Jim Riley Pennington’s wife died last night at Pettrey. Tom Canes’ mother died Sunday suddenly. No news much. Having trouble with my jaw…cutting wisdom tooth. Made x-ray of my jaw.


20. Another frost and ice. Warmed up some during day and is real nice. Leaves are getting pretty now. Dr. Lilly & Ed went to Bluefield today. Came over town a while after supper.


21. A fine morning. Up & left for Princeton- Witness in Roy Oxley case. No trial today. To go back in the morning. We went through jail. Sure is nice. We saw Mrs. Stull. This was my first trip thru the new courthouse. Went to choir practice at 7. Alfred Alvis came and got my geese.


22. Fine weather. Indian summer I believe is here. Went back to Princeton to court. Roy Oxley confessed and took two years and I sure was tickled. This was 11:10, shopped awhile and came home feeling good. Went over on hill to preaching. Came over town after supper.


23. O how beautiful trees are getting. Dug some of my dahlia bulbs today. Made cider after supper. Also Quincy made some. Ray Coburn and Juanita Lamb got married today.


24. A fine day. Rained some off and on all day. Jimmy Cox’s boy shot himself last night. No motive for it that anyone knows. We all went to Princeton to football game. West Liberty 37- Concord 0  ROTTEN.


25. Raining early. Went to SS & church. Came home and there was company. They left and after dinner we drove over to Princeton. Dr. Vermillion gone to Morgantown to see Thomas & Fred. Went to BYPU & church. D___ came home with me. Went to bed and someone knocked on door and who but Uncle Joe, Pete Aunt Mattie, and Mrs. “Stutz”. Had to get up and entertain them awhile.

27. A beautiful day. Dan Brady and Miss Hazelwood were married today. Put out onions today. Started to Elgood to ballgame and they played it at 4 so we went back home.


28. Raining today. Nearly all day. Tom & Fred Vermillion is home from medical college. Teachers all ready to go to Charleston tomorrow. Came over town after supper to choir practice and home and washed my hair. Raining hard most of night.


29. A beautiful day clearing & warmed up a lot. Glen Lyn Bridge celebration today. 10,000 people was estimated. Charlie White was buried at Elgood today. ..died Tuesday night. Drove over to Princeton after supper a while to see folks awhile. Sent my chain to EC Lawson today.


30. Very nice today. Dr. Lilly away today shopping. Levi Scott was put in jail to be ready for pen soon…got 3 years. Company after supper. Quincy, Alfred & Ed.


31. Snowed a little for the first time this year & sleeted. Dr. Lilly gone this morning. Dr. Vermillion gone this afternoon to ballgame at Bluefield. Went to Princeton after supper awhile. Snowed as we came in about 10.


November


1. Cool & raining some. Went to SS & church. After dinner I went out to see Aunt Hettie awhile. Ate supper at Quincy’s and all of us went to church and who should come while gone but Uncle Joe, Pete, and Pete’s dad for Mamma and she packed her clothes and left with them after 9 o’clock.


2. Cool today. Cloudy all day. Cleaned and waxed rug after supper.


3. Very nice day. No news much only Levi Scott is in jail waiting and tomorrow they go to pen. Working hard while Mamma is gone. Mrs. Charlie Anderson is very sick. Cancer is reported her trouble.


4. Another fine day- cold tho. Nothing going on. Went to practice after supper and stopped a while at Quincy’s. Overshoes came in.


5. Cold this morning. Went home at noon and fixed & painted front porch. Dr. Lilly gone all afternoon to Princeton on business. Quincy’s came down after supper awhile. Dad predicted snow before morning.


6. A beautiful day again. Dr. Lilly gone again all afternoon. Worked some tonight. Painted floor in my room.

7. Another fine day. Clear as can be.  No news much to keep. Came over town after supper awhile and out for a ride. Got in early.


8. Oh what a day. Went to SS & church and home. After dinner Mamma & Uncle Joe, Roy, Margaret & Aunt Mattie came up. Went to BYPU & church. Dr. Kelly preached. D___.


9. Indian Summer is here I believe. Sure so pretty and warm. Went up to Princeton after supper. It was so nice & warm & a beautiful night. Found all in bed at 7:15. They hit the hay early believe me. Dr. Lilly gone all day to Princeton- RG Meador estate.


10. Still fine days- no frost today. Boys turned over a stove in Miss Luten’s room…some excitement believe me. Company after supper. Bird, Ora & Juanita came out a while.


11. Beautiful day. 13 years ago today was signed Armistice Day. Dr. Lilly  gone hunting. Dr. Vermillion gone also somewhere. I am leaving at noon. Went 2 trips to farm for lumber. Had to have car cleaned up some new set of spark plugs put in. Started over town but turned back out Broadway.


12. A fine day. Fire was out on Doc’s farm again yesterday. No news much. Came over town after supper to practice at church. Had lots of fun going home.


13. Cloudy. Sprinkled rain a tiny bit. Then cleared up and was nice & smoky. Went to PTA party at high school. Had lots of fun everybody.


14. Cloudy early but cleared again and is a nice day. Warmer a lot. Went over to Princeton after supper and met up with Rogers & wife and had to go to show. Too rough for me. Shopped a while and came home about 10-.


15. A fine day. Went to SS & church and after dinner Rosie Goodloe came to spend the afternoon with me. We walked over town and down to college and back home. Went to church at 7:30. Mr. Short was baptized. 


16. A dandy day. No news tho. Came over to church meeting at 7:30. Quincy came down a while after supper. Quincy paid $20.00 on rent. Unity School was cut out and kids coming to Training School today.

18. A fine day. No news tho. Everything quiet. Came over town after supper to choir practice. Wind sure did blow last night.


19. Cloudy early & lots of dew. Dr. Lilly went to John Clemons hunting today. Got back at 3 PM. Wind up a little today. Went to bed and someone phoned that we were going to have company in few minutes. Bill B. & Tommy.


20. Wind high this morning cloudy. State Road put up a stop sign for all cars coming from High school direction.


21. A dandy day. No rain & no snow yet. Came over town after supper. Got a big sucker today. Ronnie Sublet was shot out hunting today.


22. A hot day. Went to SS & church without my coat, So warm. After dinner, I worked at office awhile and then went over to Princeton. After supper we went to church. Milton Lord sang for us. Sure was good. D___ -possum hunt.


23. A beautiful day. Wind so warm and nice. No news much to jot down. Lerona basketball team beat Elgood boys today. Hurrah. Was exposed to Scarlet Fever today.


24. Clear & nice again today. Quincys came down after supper awhile.


25. Raining this morning and colder. By noon it was clear and nice. Auto wreck on curve above Bud Shumate’s. Was invited out for turkey dinner tomorrow. Came over town after supper awhile for choir practice. Had lots of fun going home.


26. A beautiful morning. A big frost tho. Went to church at 10:30 and on to JA Mace’s for dinner - Thanksgiving Day. Went over to Princeton to see “Daddy Longlegs”. Sure was good. Got a nice box of candy today.


27. Raining today- most all day. Dr. Lilly gone to Bluefield shopping. No news much. Everybody gone from town for holidays. Foggy all day and dark. Put apples in cellar today.


28. Still foggy and raining all day. Roads are getting pretty bad. Came over town after supper for groceries and home and to bed early.  Amos passed out when Jack Dickerson hit him while alone in taxi cab office.


29. Still raining and continued all day. Went to SS & church. Wanted to go to show over to Princeton but it rained too hard so spent the afternoon peaceful at home. Went to BYPU & church. D___was out Broadway.

December


1. Colder, sleeting, snowed a little & rained all today. No sunshine yet. A very disagreeable day. We were told that Uncle Duke Blankenship died back in September but we didn’t know it.


2. A big frost & freeze. Coldest morn yet. News around that Charlie Short bought Jim Pennington’s store building. Sure did. Blaine Jennings went to hospital for appendicitis. Mr. Fred Rogers bought Frank Dickenson’s house.


3. Raining today. Just a little. Clearing up in afternoon but colder a lot. Came over town after supper to practice and back and to bed.


4. Warmer a lot and raining too… cloudy all day. No news much. Joe Rogers in Princeton died tonight at 7:30.


5. Colder & cloudy early. Looked like snow but failed to do so. Cleared by noon and a very nice afternoon. We killed our pigs today. Went over to Princeton to show and on to dance a little while. Got home as Amos & Andy was coming on.


6. A very nice day. Went to SS & church. Went out to see Aunt Hettie a little while in afternoon. Mrs. Hensley came down awhile too. Went to church at 7. Wind high.


7. Colder a lot. No news much. Made sausage after supper. Amos got in bad over Jack Dixon. Police got him. Gave my metal lamp to Arthur Hartman to wire for me.


8. Cloudy & colder a lot. Dr. Lilly down at college – exam teeth for girls. Dr. Vermillion gone to Princeton courting in Bragg Mullens case. Went to sleeting & raining about 4 o’clock and by bedtime it sure was bad. Worse yet.


9. Sleeted & rained all night I think. Pretty bad this morning. First day of real winter weather. Thawing all day. Rained awhile. Scared sick over a patient and anesthesia- first time. Came over town after supper awhile to singing.


10. Still lots of snow & sleet but going fast.


11. Cloudy and warmer a little sleet yet on the north side. Mr. Lytton’s cow got in to chop and ate 1 bushel or more and is real sick.


12. Raining hard this morning and most of the day. Jake Brown’s house caught on fire and sure was exciting for a while. Called Princeton fire truck over. Came over town after supper to Pennington’s store. Guy Rice stole Keith Thompson’s car and wrecked it up on the road.


13. Raining most of day. Went to SS & church. Up to Princeton after dinner awhile. Daddy sprained his ankle pretty bad coming from where sick cow was. Went to church at 7:30…3 joined. Raining as we came home.


14. Raining yet today. Dr. Lilly left for Bluefield early. I went also. Dr. Vermillion went down on river and I stayed and kept office. Dr. Lilly got us a hot plate…a dandy.


15. Raining a little bit today. No news. Was up most of last night working at something I have never done before. Author Hartman is putting in some switches for us at the office.


16. A fine day today. No news. No snow or frost yet. Went to choir practice & back and went to Princeton to Moose Charity Dance. Sure was a crowd there.

20. Raining a tiny bit. Went to SS & church. Santa came to SS.- 154 there. Went to church at 7:30 to Xmas Program. Church filled to overflowing. A good program.

22. Cloudy & warmer. School out today until Jan 4. Gertrude Lilly Amos died this morning in Bluefield. Thundered and lightning and rained at 8 this morning. A sight…hardest storm…seems like summer time.


23. A very nice day. We went to cemetery for burial of Mrs. Amos at 3 PM. Andy & Amos trial was only a dream. Uncle Joe Meador sent me a canary bird…a singer.


24. Raining most all day. Dr. Lilly gone shopping to Bluefield. Lots of drunks in town. Went over to Mount Jackson for Xmas Program. Can’t hardly wait to see Santa in the morn.


25. Santa sure came. Got so many nice things. Came over town. Snowed a little. Frank Gore, Hade, Marylee & Tootsie came down a while. Drs. Took cast off her leg. She is doing fine. Came over town for 5 o’clock mail. Cold too believe me. Dean gave me a watch.


26. A very nice day tho worked hard. Went home and company came after supper - BV & Ida. Went to bed at 11. Got a package from Koons.


27. A very nice day clear and pretty. Went to SS & church. Home and Dr.  & Mrs. Lilly, Mr. & Mrs. Hensley, Mr. & Mrs. Rogers was down for supper with us. Had a lot of fun. Went to BYPU & church. D___.


28. Foggy raining and ice freezing on trees. John  F Pennington died last night. John Price is Papa today. Baby boy born at his home last night.


29. Cloudy most of day. Aunt Lura went to hospital today. Came over town after supper awhile, Mamma and me went to see Lillian awhile.


30. Clear most of the day. Dr. Lilly gone all morning. Murial Pettrey is Pa again. Up late tonight, just Dad and I. John Bird is seriously ill. 


31. Raining this morning hard. December gone and no snow yet…only ground white once and that was sleet. Hasn’t been cold enough to hardly freeze ground. Out to Hensley’s for pounding.  Only 3 of us there. Raining, wind a sight.
