The Wall Street Crash in October signaled the beginning of the Great Depression. The first Academy Awards and first car radio, made by Motorola.
January
1. A very nice day. Raining some during day. Mr. Dobbins shot himself. Quincy went to work at dormitory. Snowed during night.
2. A nice snow this morning and still at it- continued all day. By night we had a very nice snow. Daddy taking the flu.
3. A fine day. The town election is on and lots out to vote during day-227. Dean took me home from the office. First time in over a year.
4. A dandy day. I am afraid I might be taking the flu- sneezing and tears running. Daddy’s birthday today. Wind blowing and getting colder.
5. Cloudy and cold and wind from the east. Raining hard nearly sleet. So cold. Snow still on ground. Just poured the rain nearly all night. Radio bad.
6. Snowing and freezing fast. Went to SS & C. Got my package from “M” Iowa. Mamma sick too. O.O. Karnes died last night. Cold as the dickens.
7. Cold this morning. Mrs. L.H. Goode died at 3 AM. Dr. Lilly gone to Bluefield. I am so hoarse, can’t talk good. Papa up a little bit today.
8. A very nice day. Cold as mischief though. Mr. O.O. Karnes buried today. Mama in bed today. Had Dr. over to see her- very sick.
9. Warming up during day. I was home all day to see to Mama and Papa and do the work. Dr. back to see Mama but she is doing fine. Snowing some about dark. Mrs. Goode was buried.
10. Rained most all night and is real warm all day. Was in the office just a few minutes in forenoon then came back about 2:30 for a while. Getting colder. Ground freezing some by dark.
11. Pretty cold the morning. I came to office but went back at 10:00 AM to see how they were. I was as sick as thunder most of afternoon. Mrs. Mastin called me that Sadie Holdren had died.
12. Snowed and snowing early this morning and real cold. Warmed up some in afternoon. Mama sat up some this afternoon.
13. Got up and it was snowing and believe it did so all day. Several from here went to Sadie Holdren’s burial. Came over town but missed Sunday School and church. Quincy came down a while. Getting colder later in evening. Fred Ball came down after supper a while.
14. Zero this morning by my thermometer. Coldest day we have had so far. Mama up most all afternoon. Went to bed at 7:00. Warming up lots.
15. Raining this morning and sleeting & snowing all at the same time. Much warmer. Continued cloudy & misty all day. Flu epidemic is about over Drs. think. Paper stated Jess Lee Toler is married.
16. Snowed then rained and froze everything. Slick and pretty. Still raining early this morning- so nasty underfoot.
17. Very nice day – so muddy and wet. Raining again all night.
18. Raining yet- cleared up about noon. Mrs. Gould Lilly reported married and is so - A little over two months since Gould died. Lights went out at 8:00- everybody in the dark. Windy.
19. Such a night. Stormed all night- so much wind. Hail & rain but nice and warm and clear this morn. Dr. Vermillion has poison oak bad on his hands.
20. Went to SS & Church. A real nice day- sun warm. I went out to Uncle Tip’s after dinner a while. Mr. and Mrs. Oxley came down to visit us. Went to Methodist church for preaching.
21. Raining, cloudy and muddy. Farmer’s Week at the college. Uncle Lacy and Mr. Powell spent the night with us. We went to the program. Had lots of fun - all did. Got in bed at 12:30.
22. Raining yet so muddy. Lots of farmers in town. Clearing up by late afternoon. We went to program at college. Clear as we came home and before I could get in bed it was just peppering the rain.
23. A dandy day. Sun bright, wind high, drying the mud. Went to basketball & lecture. A big crowd out. Concord won 36 - Alderson 23. Got home at 11:00.
24. Raining during the night and still at it all day. Sam in fight. Got his jaw bone broke. Took him to the hospital. We went to last night program at college. It was fine. Farmer’s dance after shows in auditorium at gym. Had lots of fun - all did. Got in after 12:00.
25. Raining again early this morning, windy. Leonard Wirtz gone again, joined the army in Richmond, report came in. Turning cold fast. Was out for a walk after supper, clear to college. Real cold.
26. Ground froze hard this morning but a clear day. Came over town after supper and out for a walk. Turning cold fast. Mr.& Mrs. Oxley & Virginia were out home until 12:30 Sunday morning.
27. A real cold day. Went to Sunday School. Was no church - furnace broke. Was up to see Mary Ann a while in the afternoon. Snowing. Went to church at Methodist. Raining as we came in and freezing & is slick. Papa went up to see Sam.
28. Cold, Cold, Cold. Snowed some during day. Streets so slick. We got no eggs today. Dean turned over Frank’s car between here and Princeton but escaped injury.
29. Still cold as thunder but thawing some. State Policeman Powers shot Dave Moye at a still near Spanishburg. He died shortly after he arrived at hospital. 9 o’clock- he died.
30. Cold but clear. Dr. Lilly went to Princeton a while. Sam Alvis came home feeling fine. Got no eggs. Dr. V. got 29 Dr. L. 161. Cleo Walkup gave me a surprise.
31. Snowing today- Ground is froze hard. Hope it snows a big snow. It is pouring now and continued all day- a big snow.
February
1. A fine day. We have the biggest snow now of the season. Failed to snow any today. I am taking a cold.
2. Groundhog Day. Sun bright, melting some today. Sick again, stayed over town for mail.
3. Another beautiful day. Went to SS & Church. Uncle Jewel Butler died. Mama went out to Aunt Het’s a while. I was out. Went to church at Baptist, only a handful there.
4. A fine day. Dr. Lilly gone to Mr. Butler’s funeral & burial at Hill Top. Got in about 5:00. Went home early. Going to snow, so says radio. Weighed today 185.
5. A very nice snow this morning. Didn’t melt any during day. Everybody sleigh riding today. Went home early. Started on a diet.
6. Our biggest snow yet has continued to snow all morning. The biggest “ dabs eved” ever saw and the most. We took a picture of Sam Alvis’s jaw again. Has to be done over.
7. Raining early this morn. Melted all night. The biggest snow of the season. Sam gone back to hospital. Dr. said that he was alright. Hope so.
8. Still winterish. Slick as can be and melting some. Getting cold maybe snow again cloudy.
9. A dandy day. Melted lots during day. Waited over town for mail so as not have to come back in slop. Got a P from S.R. & Co.
10. Rained during the night, then froze. Slick as glass. Went to SS & church. In afternoon, sleigh riding with kids and had lots of fun. Spent evening at home. Snow nearly gone.
11. A fine day. Cold 16 above. I was weighed again today. Lost 3 pounds since last Monday.
12. Cold and cloudy. Snowed a little bit. Not melting much. No news as I know of.
13. Clear and cold. I sent several valentines today. Getting colder.
14. Snow leaving fast. I got one valentine.
15. Cloudy and still cold. No news worthwhile. Uncle Doc tried his first trial today.
16. A sloppy day, believe me. I went to the party at the high school. Had lots of fun. Ida Faulkner & the clown got the prizes. I got home about 10:00. Aunt Betty Holroyd died in Princeton Hospital.
17. Went to SS & church. So warm and nice. Spent the afternoon at home. Went to church at 7:30. Stopped by to see Mrs. Mastin.
18. A real nice day. Went to funeral of Aunt Betty Holroyd at Methodist Church. Mama was weighed today and she only pulled 219. – 9 eggs
19. Lots of snow on ground yet but melting fast. A fine day, warm and nice. I washed the windows. Came over town after supper to church meeting & Sunday School meeting. Got home at 10:00. Raining and snowing- cold.
20. Snowed during the night. Cloudy all day. Uncle Billy Steele died today. It went to snowing about 5:00 PM and just peppered down until late in the night.
21. We have the biggest snow so far today. 10-12 in. deep Daddy weighed 168 # today. Dr. V. got mad at me because I wanted to play with him. Waited over town for the mail. Mr. Compton dropped dead at his work in Welch at 7:30.
22. Cloudy, not melting very fast. Mr. Steele buried today. I only weigh 179 ½ today. Snowed again late in afternoon. Went home early so as to get ready to leave Saturday.
23. A fine morning, just 8 above zero. The Little Whittle Schoolhouse burned down 9:00. I am leaving on bus this afternoon. Will return on 8:15 bus Monday morning. Sure did have one time. Got to bed late. Ha. 7 eggs
24. A fine day, melting some. We had lots of fun during day. Got in late again. Dean was there. Some came in this morning at 8:00. Out all night. 5 eggs
25. Came home on 8:15 bus. Raining some. Still mad at me. Continued to rain all afternoon and night. Nearly all the snow is gone. It went fast during the night. I missed the committee meeting. Went to bed early. 10 eggs.
26. Still raining. All of snow gone- so muddy & sloppy. Rained all day and night nearly. Waited for mail. Radio no good.
27. Cloudy most of the day. Finally went to raining and continued all night. We heard Starkey and Stribling fight - Starkey won.
28. Raining today. Tournament starts tonight with 4 games. Lots of people coming to town. I didn’t go to games, I went to bed early.
March
1. A most beautiful spring day you ever saw. I saw two games this afternoon. Hinton beat Athens High. Sick. Hit the bed at 7:15. Raining at 10:00.
2. Oh, so beautiful about 4 inches of wet snow - trees so pretty. Went to games in afternoon, also at night. Didn’t enjoy games any.
3. A very nice day. Snow nearly all gone. Went to SS & Church. Spent afternoon in bed. Quincy’s took dinner with us. Went to church at 7:30.
4. Raining today. Weighed again today - 175# -lost 10 in 4 weeks. Dr. Lilly gone to dental meeting in Bluefield.
5. Rained during the night. Rained all day and hailed turning to snow in afternoon. A real storm -wind and rain- from 4:00 to bedtime . It sure did snow. Drug Store robbed last night. Parker resigned as mayor. Lights out, men from P. worked on them til after dark. Robert Daugherty married.
6. Cold this morning – ground covered with snow, melting fast. A very nice afternoon. Temperature 45. I went to see Mrs. Koons a while.
7. The wind blowed all night and still at it at 12:30. Dried up the mud- what didn’t freeze. Gott’s moving caskets in today Maupin Building.
8. A beautiful day, cold though. We set an old hen today. Went to practice at church 7:00. Got home at 9:30. Radio fine.
9. Snowing early this morning. Cleared up and was very nice in afternoon. Turning cold. Claude & PT was over tonite a while. Radio no good.
10. Clear but cold as h_ _ _ - 6 above zero. Went to SS & Church. Dad and I looked the farm over after dinner- a dandy day. Went to church at 7:30. Turned chicks out for a while.
11. Another dandy day. Can see two piles of snow on Flat Top yet. Working Broadway. Waited over town for mail. Spring day, sure enough.
12. Another dandy day. Getting cloudy late in afternoon. Garage back of Athens Drug Store caught on fire. Waited for mail. We sowed our lettuce after supper.
13. Continued to rain all nite and this morning. Cleared up early.
14. Rained today. Nothing happening of interest. Radio no good.
15. Rained some today- turning colder. Came to choir practice at 6:30. Papa cut down our damson trees out of yard.
16. A very nice day. Cloudy and snowing at 10:00 this morning. Claude and PT came over to hear radio and it was fine. Left at 1:00. Snowing hard at 10:30.
17. Cold and lots of snow. On the mountains…not much here. Went to SS & ch to hear Dr. Deihl at Methodist. We out on the farm in afternoon. Got my first goose egg. Went to church at 7:30
18. A dandy day. Looks like spring. Cleaned the yard. Waited for mail.
19. Another fine day. Sowed my sweet peas. Waited for mail.
20. Ed Via bought 1/3 of bus lines today. Wind high but fine. Rained a tiny bit. Weighed 172. Stayed for mail.
21. Another spring day. Rained a little. Quinzetta is 6 years old today. Waited for mail again. I got another goose egg. Was up to Quincy’s to a party for Sis.
22. A very nice day. Rained some about 8:00…Cloudy. Mrs. Paris Lilly has a new baby girl. Simply poured off and on all night.
23. Rained again. Warm today. Robbed my goose nest. Got 4 eggs since last Sunday. Waited for mail. Talked to Aunt Mattie. Got her in 3 minutes.
24. So hot- just like summer. L.H. changed her nest. We had company after noon. I went for a walk after supper, then to church. Koons came down a while.
25. Another dandy day. I cleaned off lot by bank. Robbery at Uncle Reuben’s home. Waited for mail. Took up rose bushes.
26. Cold and raining…just poured. Waited for mail again.
27. Colder and cloudy. Waited for mail again.
28. Real cool and cloudy…cleared up some…sun bright, Got my car license 127959. Blaine Jennings married for 2 months.
29. Cool two above freezing. We got baby chicks hatching today…13 hatched- 4 died. Went to practice at 7:00. Was raining and sleeting and turning colder.
30. Rained during the night to beat the band. Very nice day, real warm in afternoon. Mrs. Koons and I went to Princeton. Me with no Easter outfit. Jack Hazlewood died. Was over town after supper.
31. A beautiful day for Easter. I went to SS & Church. In afternoon went to Baptist Ch to Sir Knights Program at 3:00 then to Methodist at 7:30. Rained along about 6:00.
April
1. It sure did rain this morning and turned cool. Papa and I were over town after supper on a little business in my car …went down to pump house.
2. Clear, but cold. Ground froze a tiny bit. No news of interest. Waited for mail. Set out pines in Aunt Mattie’s lot.
3. A beautiful day- wind high. Waited for mail at 5:30. Dad and I were down to see John Bird.
4. Cloudy his morning. A real rain late in afternoon and night. I missed choir practice.
5. A very fine day- so bright after rain. Waited for mail.
6. A dandy day. Sun so hot. Bus & wife, Ken Lain,” Brannis” Sharp and another boy from Hall was over to play. We went up to cemetery and out for a ride. We went to bed at 12:30.
7. What nice weather. Went to SS. Home and ate a bite and started to farm. We got some very nice sprouts to set out. We went over to see Grandma after supper.
8. Another dandy day. We set out trees in Aunt Mattie’s lot. After supper Whistle came out. John Bird worked Broadway. Rained about 6:00.
9. A beautiful morn- getting cloudy up in morning. Broadway in good shape now.
10. A dandy morning and sun bright. Trees so pretty. Waited for mail.
11. Another dandy day. No news to keep.
12. Rained a little bit. Came over town after supper to choir practice. Saw Miss Hammond hit another car at Barbery’s store. Waited for mail.
13. A beautiful day – so warm. We went over Princeton After supper then left here at 5 past eight and drove out to Elgood. Roads fine. Davy Thompson went with us.
14. Pearl Donnelly died. A very nice morning. Went to SS & Church. After dinner we drove down to Ann & Lura’s and found Aunt Mat there. She came home with us. Raining early in evening. Missed church.
15. Still raining this morning and continued all day. Getting colder. Waiting for mail and got no shoes.
16. Snowing all day a little and raining to nearly freezing. We went to play down at college. Snowing hard as we came home. Turned my ankle again.
17. Still snowing today. Flat Top Mountain white with snow.. Got my shoes from Whistle Scott. Was out to Willie’s a while.
18. Snowing a real storm as I came to the office. Warmed up some in the afternoon. Came over town after supper a while. Stopped to see Mrs. Koons a while.
19. A nice morning – lots of frost and ice. Some say the fruits are killed; some say not; I don’t know. Waited for mail.
20. Another fine day. No news of interest. Came over town after supper then went to a party around the Hill. Had lots of fun.
21. A very nice morn. Went to SS & Church. Rained and hailed in afternoon and at night. Missed church at 7:30.
22. Cold and cloudy- rained some. Waited for mail. Put out some flower bulbs.
23. A dandy day. I went with Drs. Up to training school to give vaccine to children. Waited for mail.
24. Another very nice day. Rained late in the afternoon. Went to church at Methodist to hear Dr. Crow who starts a meeting.
25. Allen T. Bratton died. Another fine day- frost. Dr. Lilli took Phyllis over to hospital for examination. She is very sick. Stormed about 6:30.
26. A very nice day again- some frost. Phyllis is in hospital for a few days. Went to church at M- Got package from Earl E. Mays.
27. Frost this morning too. Got onion sets today. All by my lonesome. Drs. Both in Princeton. Was over town after supper a while.
28. Went to SS & Church. Went home and started for Princeton and such a storm we were incoming home. Went to church at 7:30.
29. Rained most of the day- getting colder some. Went to church again.
30. Some frost this morning. A very nice day. Mama weighs today 222 pounds. Went to church with Mama.
May
1. Rained some today. No news to mention. Went to church again.
2. Colder and rain today. A real storm about 4 in the afternoon. QD out in it. Hailed and blowed. Stayed at home.
3. A snow on this morning and still snowing. Cold as mischief. Flat Top white all day. Rained late in afternoon & night. A surprise I went to church.
4. A very nice day, only cold as mischief. Mama and I went to High School play at college. A big crowd came.
5. A very rainy morning continued until noon. Cleared up and was very nice afternoon. We went up to see Phyllis a while. Got home at 6:30. I went to B.Y.P.U. to hear report of boys. On to preaching at 7:30. We heard a China man at 10:20 at Methodist church.
6. Raining again in afternoon and continued all night. Kindly on the bum today. Remained at home after supper.
7. Rained all night- Cloudy today. Voting today on courthouse- carried. Cleared up in afternoon. Came over town after supper. Had trouble with my car.
8. A very nice day. Warming up some today. Lizzie brought me some tomato plants and cabbage. We put them out last night. Came over town after supper to try my car out after Sam fixed it for me. Had to get a new cable. Raining at 6:30. Phyllis came home. J.A. Cooper & Mrs. Whismore married today.
9. Raining early this morning. Clearing up by noon. By myself most all afternoon. Watched Kanode unload is new machine and put it in. Went to church again.
10. A clear day though cold. Warm up fast, seems like. Didn’t rain any today. We went to church at 7:30. Radio good.
11. A fine morning today. I went down to Boys Hall to see what QD wanted. We planted our corn today and done. We went up to see Mr. Moore after supper. Had lots of fun.
12. A fine day (hot). Went to SS and church at Methodist church and again at 3:00. Then drove out for a ride and seen an airplane while out. Went to church at 7:30 last night for Dr. Crowe. Rained again and stormed. Got a card from M - is in Chicago.
13. Rained during night and this morning a beautiful day. I went to lecture at college by Dr. Crowe- “Tell-tale tick of time”. Raining. Daddy went to farm today.
14. Raining and warmer. Daddy and Ma cleared off cemetery. Was down town after supper a while. Rained during the night.
15. A very nice day- failed to rain today. Heard the officers caught Uncle Hade again yesterday. Parking signs are being painted on our streets. Mowed Mrs. Koon’s yard and fed rabbits.
16. Rained a tiny bit this morning. Edith came up with Lizzie to spend the day. Rained some in afternoon and turning colder. Mr. Koons came in late tonight.
17. A little bit of frost this morning. Rain during afternoon. Mr. Meador came in from Florida.
18. A very nice day. No news of interest. I took Grover down to Liberty School. Came home in 15 minutes. We were out to Fred’s a while.
19. Raining and continued to do so all day. Went to SS & C. Then over to see Grandma a while. We went to M church to Eastern Star Services by Mr. Swope.
20. Raining and continued to all day and night. No news on a rainy day like this.
21. Cloudy and cold. Rain during day some but not like yesterday. I went to a church meeting at 7:00. Got home at 9:30.
22. A big frost this morning but didn’t hurt anything. Came over town a while after supper and up and mowed Aunt Bessie’s plot also lot at bank.
23. Another frost today- warming up some during day. We put out Bermuda onion slips. Came over town after supper a while.
24. A beautiful morning. Shriners came to our town and Gold Band and Patrol from Charleston. Sure was nice. Dr. Vermillion gone. We went to May Pole at back of Price’s about 6:30. Stopped at Koon’s a while. Allen Wiley & Rosa White went to Bristol and married.
25. Cloudy this morning but warm. Cleared up in afternoon. Came over town after supper a while. Was up until 11:00.
26. A dandy day. Went to SS. Appointed Dr. Lilly supt. by Mr. Moore. We went to see Grandma after dinner. Missed church.
27. Dr. Lilly gone to White Sulphur Springs to dental meeting for three days. Rained a little bit. We went to college to High School Class night.
28. Real hot today. Clearing up some. We put out dahlias at bank. We had the hardest rain tonight beginning about 6:15 & storming. We went to H.S. Graduation at 8.
29. A real nice day after the rain. Dr. Lilly got in from White Sulphur Springs about 3:00. We went out for a ride after supper. Aunt Mattie came up.
30. Cloudy today; rain some. Decoration Day- everybody busy. Spent the night at home.
31. Hot as mischief today, Training School out and Quincy’s kids all made good grades- even Jessie past way over the top. We went down to the college. Rained to beat the band.
June
1. A fine day –Hot. We went to the unveiling of Mayor Reynolds & Captain James Harvey French. Then on to Princeton, back home and at 9 went down to plays at college.
2. A rainy day. Mama, Aunt Mat went to common church sermon. I did not go in but waited outside. Got shrubs from Earl A. Mays and set them out. Folks came up from Hinton for Aunt Mattie. Left at 8:30 and pouring rain.
3. Rained all night, I believe. Everybody gone from our town. Was out at Willie’s awhile- all of us.
4. A very nice day. Got my first spring dress. Was over town to a committee meeting at office. Went out and stopped at---All this is false- should be tomorrow.
5. Was out at Willie’s a while to see Ethel and kids after supper.
6. A nice day. We worked our corn, at least some of it, today. Finished up at 8:30 tonight. Tired too, all of us.
7. A fine day again. No news of interest to keep. Planted garden.
8. Rained today late in afternoon. Came over town after supper a while. Fixed my car from missing- spark plug busted.
9. A dandy day. I went to SS & Church meeting. Then after dinner we went to farm to see about cherries. Got 11 pints of strawberries after canned. Missed church- just out for a ride.
10. A fine day. Took Papa and Neta to the farm for cherries. Went for the folks, Charlie Carr fell out of cherry tree.
11. Another fine day, Quincy’s and Dad went for cherries. Was up late. Had company.
12. Rained during the day. Charlie Carr died from fall. Came over town a while after supper.
13. A very nice day. Sprinkled rain today. Had a flat tire. We had company tonight a while.
14. A very nice day – warm. I went to church for a meeting. Rain.
15. A fine day. Lazy, getting hot. I cut my first sweet peas tonight. Came over town, left pocketbook in Pennington’s store. Fixed cemetery lot.
16. Went to SS and then left for the farm. Koons, all went with us, also Jessie Ball. Lots of cherries. Had lots of fun. Went to church at 8:00. Dr. Gay talked.
17. Rained during day. Worked our corn out and part of garden. Maude & Gertrude Pettrey came out house after supper.
18. Started painting on hill. Real hot. A hard storm in afternoon. Lightening hit a pine tree near our home. Killed Mr. Trail at Pipestem. Killed 17 sheep for West Pennington at Speedway
19. Rained again today- not much. Real hot. Helped Papa put up hay. Lee Oxley’s cow got in our corn and spent the night and ruined it.
20. Another hot day. Aunt Ann Fanning died at 6:00 today. Came over town after supper a while. Rained again.
21. A hot day. Rained. Someone ruined Mr. Massie’s bees. Had a wreck on corner at bank. Came over town to committee meeting at church.
22. A fine day- real nice breeze. No rain. Came over town after supper a while. Then again at 9:00.
23. A fine morning. Our cow spent the night in corn. Gate left open by kids. Daddy and I went to farm at 8:10 for cherries. Koons came later. Rained on us and we were soaking wet. Got home at 4:30. Fred Gautier in jail –drunk. Went to church at 8:00. Koons came down after I went to bed. Fred Alvis home burnt up.
24. A fine morning. Raining at noon and all afternoon. We heard Mr.“Leg’s” family was killed in a wreck.
25. Rained again all day nearly. No news of interest.
26. Didn’t rain any today. Was out for a ride with Dean. Dr. Vermillion gone all day. Quinzetta got her foot cut. Was up to see Dr. Lilly a while after supper.
27. A fine day. Rained some though the painters got done today. House looks just fine. Went to carnival at Princeton. Had lots of fun. “Ford give Pennington paint.
28. Rained again today. Went to carnival again. Pete, Fred and Becket went with me.
29. Cool today. Dr. Vermillion gone again today on river to wedding. Came over town a while. Went to carnival- had lots of fun.
30. Went to SS. A very nice day. Hunted for cow most of the day. Sam and I went to farm for a bail of cherries. Rained some. Went to church at 8:00.
July
1. Rained today, real hard. No news of interest. Harry Wiley run off to Bristol with Eula Pettrey. Came over town after supper. Caught in a storm.
2. Rained today. After supper we went up to see Grandma a while. Got home about 10:00. Real chilly.
3. A very nice day. Showered a little bit. Came over town after supper to office. Heard Dr. Diehl talk over WHI, Bluefield.
4. We went down to the farm for berries & cherries. Got home at 1:30. Washed my hair. All went to Glenwood Park to see fireworks. Had lots of fun. Got home at 12:00. Left Dr. V. at office by himself all day.
5. Rained today. Car wreck in Princeton. 1 boy killed 2 in hospital. Came over town after supper a while.

7. A fine day- did not rain. I put up some hay with Daddy after dinner. Went up on hill and out to Dr. Lilly’s a while. Went for a ride after supper, also Koons.
8. Failed to rain again today. Working corn over again. Lee Oxley’s cow spent another night in our corn. I helped Dad until 8 at night to hoe.

1. A dandy day. Got paint from Hinton to finish painting. Was up to Koons a while after dark.
2. A nice day. Sprinkled rain a little bit. Stopped at Dr. Lilly and got a real bale of peaches. Went out to see Willie a while after supper. Quincy bought 2 hives of bees and brought home.
3. Raining this morning. Ran out of gas for the first time as I came to work. Continued raining all day.
4. A beautiful morning. Real chilly. Went to Sunday S., then to Elgood to Billy Sunday Club. Had a dandy dinner. Papa hurt his hip and can’t walk a bit.

1. A fine day. Went to SS & Church. Washed my hair and slept all afternoon. Went for a ride after supper.

3. Hot and dry. Planning on going to Aunt Bessie’s Thursday. Came over town after supper a while.
4. A fine day. Got word Grandma was sick. We went up after supper. Dr. Vermillion took Tommy Scott’s baby to hospital with meningitis, very sick.
5. A fine day. Left at 1 PM for Cool Ridge to stay until Sunday. Arrived at 3:30. Quincy, Neta, Mama & Hat went with me.
6. A dandy day. Daddy was given the janitor’s job at Training School. Went to Beckley and on to Raleigh County Fair. Dorse White’s boys were hit by a car and fractured skull.
7. Another hot day. Rained a little bit. Went into Beckley in afternoon. Got home at 8:30. Had lots of fun.

14. Started two gallons of grape wine this afternoon -1 pint of grapes & 1 Qt Sugar & 1 Gal. Rained all day. We went up to see Grandma a while after supper. Dr. Holdren went with us. Grandma very sick. Cool as thunder.
15. A very nice day. Went to SS. Then to Mercer Healing Springs and joined the White folks from Flat Top for an all-day outing. Came home and on to see Grandma. Sent Uncle Hade a telegram at 10:00. Came home early.

1. Rained most of the night and still raining this morning. Verena went to her school this morning. I have got a stiff knee. Dr. bandaged it tight a few minutes ago. Raining late tonight.
2. Continued raining all night hard and still at it at 10:30 this morning. Water over Princeton & still raising. Went to bed at 7:30.
3. Rained a little bit today, cool also. Hi waters everywhere. Raining when I went to bed.

5. A very nice morning. Cloudy & raining in afternoon. Besoco vs Athens 43-0 in favor of Athens. Came over town after supper a while.
6. A fine day. Went to SS & to M—to hear Dr. Marsh. In afternoon, we went up to Princeton and out to New Hope. Went to church at 7:30. Uncle Tom Boggess thrown from a mule.

13. Cloudy and rained a little bit then a beautiful day. We went to Elgood to the homecoming. There was a nice crowd present. A good dinner was served and a good talk by Mr. Swope at 2 PM. We came home about 4:15. I went to church at 7:30.
14. A fine day. In Sunday’s paper Dr. T.R. Holroyd & Everly Weaver were married in August 1929. I went to choir practice at church at 6:45.

1. A beautiful day. Cleared up and looked like spring. Dr. Looked at my knee, doing fine. Pulling off our corn.
2. A beautiful morning. Clouding up and raining at 2 PM and continued to pour all evening. Marshall 0 vs. Emory Henry 0 at Bluefield this afternoon. We went over to Princeton after supper, Quincy & I. Joyce Lewis got button in ear.
3. Rained nearly all day. I went to SS & Church. Then home. Went to bed at 1:30 and got up at 4 when company came. M_____. Quincy’s came down after supper a while. 2 cars burnt up between here & bridge- yesterday & today.
4. Cleared up and is a very nice day. Went to choir practice & church meeting at office. Got home about 9:00. Very cool.
5. Lots of ice this morning- ground froze. We shucked corn until late tonight. Ladie got 7 pups. Ed Via shot Dr. Lilly today.

5. A fine day. Went to funeral of Mr. Nelson. Mrs. W.B. Crockett died at 2:30. Rained and sleeted.

Haven’t seen him for year. Jessie Thompson is married.
