Then and Now
Reflections on a Journey
Garland C. Elmore
Reconnecting with high school friends lead me on a personal journey into the past and to my home town. I thought about growing up, leaving, and then returning to Athens after being away for five decades. I wrote about the experience in a little coffee table book that I printed and gave to a dozen people who influenced me the most during "my years," a period from 1951-1969, rather arbitrarily determined simply because those were the years the Athens High School Yearbook was published. My relationships to many of those influencial people are described the book. The photographs and narratives are reproduced here in a slide show. My story is about growing up and living through a special time in the history of Athens.

This is Garland's story about his connection to, absence from, and reconnection with Athens.
