Massie Hotel

David K. Baxter, Linda Hill Mann

In 1895 Pearis Watson Massie (1862-1933) built the Massie Hotel on State Street with the adjoining P W Massie general merchandise store. Pearis Massie handled sales in the store while his wife Jennie F. Lilly took care of the hotel.  In later years P. W. Massie was an insurance salesman. The store and hotel were sold to Roy and Elsie Beckett who converted the hotel into their home and the store into the Beckett Brothers Maytag store.

During renovations of the building in 1987 the store was razed. The remainder of the building was razed in 1997. The CVS Drug Store and parking lot now occupy that space. Demoliton photos appear in the Change chapter.
